Naval Air Station Wildwood (NASW) was commissioned on April 1,
1943. The site served as an active dive-bomber squadron training
facility from 1943 to 1945. Aircraft stationed at NASW included TMB
Avengers, Douglas Dauntlesses, Vought Corsairs and Curtiss Helldivers.
Forty-two known airmen perished while training at NASW during World War II. The
facility closed at the conclusion of the war.
In June of 1997, NASW Foundation was establised and purchased Hanger #1 at
the Cape May County Airport. The 92,000 square-foot all-wooden structure is listed
on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. Extensive renovations
have stabilized the hanger and enabled the NASW Foundation to establish the
aviation museum, boasting over 15 aircraft displays as well as exhibits on military
memorabilia, engines, photographs and more.
The museum is open daily and is located at 500 Forrestal Rd., Cape May County
Airport, Erma, NJ. Tel: (609) 886-8787. Visit our web site at www.usnasw.org.

A Bike Ride
- Come Spend it With Us.
The Wildwoods, situated on a barrier island facing the Atlantic Ocean, consist of ve separate municipalities: Wildwood,
North Wildwood, West Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Diamond Beach.
During the winter, the ve-mile island is quiet and serene, an ideal getaway for those who want to stroll the beach
and boardwalk undisturbed.
From early spring to late fall, another personality reigns. Thats when the Wildwoods really come alive, with non-
stop excitement and fun for the whole family.
Wildwoods largest attraction is its famous boardwalk, with a total of ve amusement piers, plus carnival games,
souvenir shops, food stands, water parks, and world-class roller coasters. The smell of funnel cake, popcorn, suntan lotion,
and all kinds of delectable treats from the boardwalk food vendors give it that festive avor.
Traditionally the boardwalk is open for business from Palm Sunday weekend through Columbus Day, with a weekends-
only schedule before Memorial Day and after Labor Day.
Bring your bike or rent one at one of the many area bike rental shops. Start in Anglesea (North Wildwood) and take a
ride from point to point (its only ve miles).
A sure hit among young and old is the beautiful Hereford Inlet Lighthouse. The Swiss Gothic-style lighthouse was built
in 1874 to provide a navigational aide to mariners passing by or traveling into the treacherous Hereford Inlet. It still shines
its beacon 14 nautical miles out to sea, and was placed on the Department of Interiors List of Historic Places in 1977.
Take the tour of the house, a nautical museum with lots of interesting facts about the area and its rst settlers. After
your tour, dont forget to stop by the gift shop with wonderful nautical gifts and native treats. Afterward, stroll
through the amazing gardens that surround the lighthouse and attract various migrating birds, hummingbirds and
butteries.
When leaving the lighthouse, travel east by following the sea wall. Take in the sights and sounds of the ocean on
a pretty morning and view one of the largest white sand beaches in all of New Jersey. This path will lead you to the
boardwalk, which starts on 16th Street.
Make sure you hit the boards early, because it closes to bicycle riders at 11 a.m. from Memorial Day to Labor
Day. The boardwalk, built at the turn of the century, stretches along the beach for more than a mile and a half. It
houses a state-of-the-art convention center, four incredible amusement piers, two movie theaters, hundreds of
souvenir and novelty shops and a variety of restaurants, ethnic food stands, salt water taffy and fudge shops.
Your bike ride now takes you to the end of the boardwalk in Wildwood Crest, a charming town lled
with beautifully manicured homes. Lush private gardens and pretty vistas of the sea and bay make up the
scenery in this section of the Wildwoods.
Heading towards Cape May you will hit Diamond Beach, the last stop on the tour. The island narrows
at this point into one road. On the right hand side going south, there is a bird sanctuary. Ride your bike
into this remote area and dont forget your binoculars.
Not sure what to do at night? The lights brighten the skyline and the boardwalk takes on a new look.
The combination of the ashing neon, mixed with lively music, the spin of the game wheels and the
enticing aromas coming from the open-air eateries create a carnival-like atmosphere.
Accommodations of every kind are available throughout this island resort. From motel units with
efciency kitchens to modern condominiums and roomy apartments, a stay in Wildwood is an affordable
choice for every pocketbook.
Dont forget to include in your trip a stop to the back-bay area where there are a host of private,
charter and party boats for daily bay and deep sea shing excursions. Sailing, jet skiing and motor boating
are also available from most Wildwood docks. Sightseeing and whale watching trips are fun for the whole
family.
For more information, visit the Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce web site at www.gwcoc.com
or call 609-729-4000.

Long acclaimed for its laid-back lifestyle and fun & funky
Doo Wop personality, the Wildwoods is equally
renowned for its wonderful restaurants, cafes, eateries
and bars. The burgeoning number of established and brand
new eateries have attracted award-winning chefs and rising
new stars fresh from the top culinary schools who continue to
make this tiny island a draw for foodies. Showcased 3 times on the
popular Food Network.
Local dining choices range from ve-star gourmet establishments to casual
cafes and raw bars. From downtown Pacic Avenue and the waterfront, to hidden
bay side gems, restaurants occupy old homes and other buildings featuring widely diverse
architectural styles. Dining in the Wildwoods is more than just a meal its a real experience.
Of course, frozen pina coladas are not what make this island a culinary paradise. The towns
tropical atmosphere plays an unmistakable roles in the creation of Wildwood cuisine. Fresh
seafood gure prominently on island menus, as do french fries, funnel cake and pizza for a taste
of the boardwalk specialties. Be sure to stop in at one of the many little eateries to sample the
inexpensive and delicious fare. Or treat your family to a ne and elegant dining experience, its
all here.
Seafood is what visitors to the Wildwoods are always asking for, and it is certainly the star in
that department. Stone crab claws, lobster, and yellowtail snapper you name it: if it swims,
crawls or grows in the ocean, you can be sure its on a menu in this food-loving cities. Among
the most sought-after Wildwood delicacies is ounder, which are harvested from sheries in
and around the Wildwoods and Cape May. So desirable that you can order ounder in a variety
of ways, from broiled and baked to marinated, sauted, fried, grilled
or stuffed.
Speaking of slices, let us now pay tribute to the legendary
pizza. So much has been said and written about this fabled
meal with all of the proper food groups gathered in one
that we need to make the claim that Wildwoods serves
up the real deal and having a slice on the boardwalk is
a must do while visiting the Wildwoods. Watch out for
those seagulls though!
From seafood to steak, elegant or quaint the
Wildwoods has it all when it comes to culinary
delights. As the saying goes;
come hungry, leave happy!
Spend it with us.

Lauras Fudge uses only the purest, freshest, and natural ingredients such
as real dairy cream, 100% natural chocolate liquor, pure vanilla, nuts,
coconut and peanut butter. But its the blending of these ingredients
and just right timing of beating the fudge at the proper temperature that

- Not just your grandmoms shore
diners, though we have those, too.
First things rst.
If youre one of those people who spend a portion of your vacation planning time dreaming about that really, really
great seafood meal that Ill remember all year, The Wildwoods will not disappoint.
We serve up seafood for every palate and budget, in establishments ranging from an elegantly converted vintage shore
home where the heaping portions remind you of your grandmoms shore dinners, to more modern, trendy settings whose
quality and sleekness is reected in their nouvelle cuisine seafood presentations.
And we have even more!
The Wildwoods dining scene has undergone a renaissance in recent years, with new restaurants opening and favorite
establishments wading into new and exciting areas to nd just the right dishes for every member of the family.
Our efforts have not gone unnoticed. The national media, which regularly highlights The Wildwoods, hasnt neglected
our food scene.
Last year, The Food Network lmed a Dinner Impossible episode here, with celebrity chef Robert Irvine meeting
the challenge of preparing a meal for 250 women participating in a Roller Derby event at the Wildwoods Convention
Center and he accomplished the feat in under eight hours.
Later in the summer, on Sunnys Summer Eats, Food Network host Sunny Anderson featured the diverse foods
of The Wildwoods Boardwalk. In yet another episode, Anderson and her crew shot footage of local eateries during
the Wildwoods Irish Fall Festival and the Boardwalk Classic Car Show and Auction.
And visitors are raving about events where we combine musical talent with culinary delights.
The New Jersey State Barbeque Championship and Anglesea Blues Festival includes three days of mouth-
watering treats, cooked to perfection by barbecue teams from around the country, as well as barbecue lessons
for those who want to improve or develop their barbecuing skills.
As one food critic commented: This isnt just grilling, this is art!
As they feast, crowds also delight to the best in national and regional blues music the same successful
ingredients that are applied later in the season, at the Wildwood Seafood and Music Festival, an event
including a gigantic street fair with vendors, crafters, pie-eating and other contests, Kids Korner face-painting,
musical entertainment, and (of course) a chowder contest.
Youre not full, yet, we hope. Theres more!
The Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce sponsors a wildly popular Annual Wildwoods
Restaurant Showcase, in which dozens of our nest restaurants and specialty shops serve up the best
samplings of their entrees and mouth-watering deserts.
Last year visitors also delighted to the inaugural Wildwoods Restaurant Week, an extremely successful
event in which 16 participating restaurants served participating guests a four-course meal including an
appetizer, soup or salad, an entre and dessert.
And, last but not least, dont forget the Boardwalk and other special fare uniquely associated with the
Jersey Shore.
During 2009, a new treat made its appearance on the Boardwalk and at crafts fairs and festivals
throughout The Wildwoods. The Chipstix a potato cut into a thin spiral, skewered and deep fried,
then seasoned could be seen throughout the island, enjoyed by adults and kids alike.
As always, last year visitors frequently found their way to local candy shops for long-time classics like fudge
and salt water taffy you know, as presents for the folks back home.
Oh, okay, they can be enjoyed in ones hotel room here, as well.

Located at the northern end of the Wildwoods Five Mile Island,
North Wildwood was founded in the 1890s as the tiny shing village of
Anglesea.
North Wildwood boasts that their free white sandy beach is New Jerseys
best sport beach as conrmed by Travel Holiday Magazine.
The Hereford Inlet Lighthouse and Marine Police Station located in the city
provide visitors with a historical retrospective of the resort and some of
the most beautiful gardens on the islands. Both sites are destinations on the
New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail.
Nightlife in North Wildwood is especially diverse. The summer air is lled
with oldies music at the dockside...rock and roll at the clubs...ethnic sing-
a-longs...the choices are endless at the northern end of the Island. North
Wildwood also hosts a number of special events throughout the summer
season for your fun and enjoyment.

South Jerseys Top 10 Hit Parade
Theres nothing like cruisin the streets of Jersey in your pink
Cadillac, 409 or little GTO, singing along to classic beach music.
Weve compiled our own (very subjective) list of summers
greatest songs - but theyre fun to sing all year long.
South Jerseys Top 10 Hit Parade
1 Wildwood Days Every days a holiday, and every night is Saturday night.
Bobby Rydell sang the song in 1964, and it still holds true today. This
irresistibly catchy tribute to summer fun is South Jerseys unofcial anthem.
2 All Summer Long The Beach Boys lent their matchless harmonies
to this 60s-era song about living in T-shirts, cutoffs and thongs. (By the way,
thongs back then referred to ip-ops, not body oss!)
3 Hot Fun in the Summertime Sly & the Family Stones song about
summer love will make you Cloud 9 every time.
4 Under the Boardwalk The Drifters vintage version is timeless;
John Mellencamps 1997 version is fresh and fun.
5 Summer This great tune from War dates itself with lyrics like rappin on the
CB radio in your van, but youve gotta love the languid-as-a-summer-day tempo.
6 Jersey Girl In Bruce Springsteens version, recorded live with composer
Tom Waits in 1981, the Boss cant sing about the shore without sparking
screams of pleasure from the Garden State audience. Still a thrill.
7 A Summer Place The Percy Faith version, circa 1959, recalls a time of
innocence among the dunes. Those were the days!
8 Endless Summer Nights Cornball balladeer Richard Marx did one thing
right: this great song, lled with wistful memories of one unforgettable love affair.
9 Summer Wind Youve got to adore Frank Sinatras wry tune about
eeting romance. The sinuous arrangement by Nelson Riddle, plus music and
lyrics by Henry Mayer and Johnny Mercer, are perfection.
10 Summer of 69 Bryan Adams rockin remembrances of being young, in
love and, best of all, in a band, make everyone recall the best days of their lives.
Wildwood Crest is located at the southern end of The Wildwoods Five Mile
Island. Here you will nd the lazy, hazy days of summers of old. Rest and relaxation
are the featured attractions in this easy going and picturesque part of the island.
Ocean front accommodations, modern motels, hotels and condominiums abound
in Wildwood Crest where the sunrises gently awaken you to warm, sunny, fun lled
days. The simple pleasure of life blend with the beach environment to provide a
seashore vacation that will awaken all senses with the sound of seagulls...the roll
and splash of the waves...the smell of the salt air. You can stroll along the sandy
beaches and collect a variety of shells and enjoy the pristine waters.
Sunset Lake, located on the west side of the island, is the playground for
watersports including, jet skiing, water skiing, and boating. If shing is your passion
then visit Crest Harbor, here you will nd party boats which offer half-day and
full-day excursions into the Atlantic. Every evening families gather at Sunset Lake,
to watch the most spectacular sunset views on the island.
Entertainment is regularly scheduled at Centennial Park throughout the summer
months and includes outdoor music and dancing. Wildwood Crest also hosts
a number of special events throughout the summer season for your fun and
enjoyment. To maintain the family atmosphere, there are no liqueur stores or bars
in Wildwood Crest. So, if you are interested in
the casual, calm, quaint and cool pleasures
of life, visit the southern end of the
island --Wildwood Crest.

History -
Come Spend it With Us
The Wildwoods may be most famous for their magnicent broad white beaches, award-winning
two-mile Boardwalk, and unparalleled amusements for all ages. But the history and heritage
of the community are also alive, right here in our own backyard. Dont miss these attractions,
which are informative, educational, and fun for the whole family.
George F. Boyer Museum. Take a trip into the Wildwoods diverse and colorful past at the George F. Boyer Museum,
founded in 1963 and operated by the Wildwood Historical Society.
Browse a one-of-a-kind collection of memorabilia, from vintage photographs to a full range of souvenirs and even an original
carousel horse, all showcasing the Wildwoods long legacy as the East Coasts No. 1 shore resort. Newspapers and books document
our role in the history of the Jersey Shore, from the turn of the 20th century to the present. And artifacts from the 50s and 60s
attest to the Wildwoods pivotal place in the history of rock-and-roll (famous Twister Chubby Checker got his start in the resort,
as did Bill Haley and the Comets, who made Rock Around the Clock the musical anthem of teenagers in the 1950s).
Museum exhibits also track the history of the islands police and re departments, the beach patrol and local sports legends.
Admission is free, and donations are appreciated.

Naval Air Station Wildwood. Discover Cape May Countys exciting role in the nations aviation history at the Naval Air Station
(NAS) Wildwood at the Cape May Airport. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Hangar No. 1 offers a stirring tribute to Navy airmen
who lost their lives during training in World War II.
NAS Wildwood was commissioned in 1943, at the height of the war, and served as an active dive-bomber squadron training facility from 1943 to
1945. Today, the vast, 92,000-square-foot hangar includes more than two dozen displays, showcasing vintage aircraft including TBM Avengers, Douglas
Dauntlesses, Vought Corsairs and Curtiss Helldivers.
No experience brings 20th century military history to life like NAS Wildwood, with its wealth of military memorabilia, engines, photographs and
more. Kids and grownups alike will love the interactive exhibits, which allow visitors to thrill to the science of ight.
Throughout the year, the museum also features y-ins, aviation festivals, big band concerts, swing dances, veterans ceremonies, historical lectures,
school eld trips and senior tours.

Historic Cold Spring Village. Step into another century at this living history museum, with 30 acres of grounds, gardens and faithfully
replicated 18th century homestead, including 26 restored historic buildings.
Cold Spring Village brings to vivid life the age of homespun (1789-1840), demonstrating how our ancestors lived, plied their trades, and
cultivated the land. Interpreters in period garb explain how people created community in the coastal agricultural environment of a bygone era.
Cold Spring Village provides a matchless experience for children, who can try on Early American costumes, enjoy hands-on crafts, and play
old-time games. History buffs will want to check out the full calendar of events for military reenactments and lecture series.
Want to take the past home? Choose from an array of artisan-made pottery, ironware, wooden toys and more at the Village Country Store,
as well as homemade jams, jellies and other delicacies. For ne dining in an historic atmosphere, stop at the elegant Old Grange Restaurant.

World War II Watch Tower. After the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, which propelled the U.S. into World War II, New Jersey
fortied itself against similar strikes by building a series of heavily armed lookout towers along the shoreline. This strategic homeland
defense system, with towers in Delaware as well as New Jersey, was known collectively as Fort Miles.
Three of the four New Jersey towers, including those in North Wildwood and Wildwood Crest, are now gone. The sole remaining
tower, a mighty six-story concrete structure, is minutes from the Wildwoods, in Cape May Point State Park.
The site is a favorite of history and military buffs, and a top stop for school tours. Visitors can climb to the top via a spiral staircase, view
a Wall of Honor with photos of local men and women who served in the armed forces, and hear audio interviews with veterans.
Best of all, they can see the Delaware Bay from a unique vantage point, as it looked to those who guarded our shores during
World War II.

Wildwoods Vietnam Veterans Remembrance Wall. You dont have to travel to Washington, D.C., to visit the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. In 2009, a replica of the famous tribute was constructed at Columbus Park in Wildwood. The
unveiling and ribbon cutting was held on Memorial Day Weekend 2010.
Flanked by benches and owering bushes, the Wildwoods Vietnam Veterans Remembrance Wall is approximately half the size
of the original, and evokes memories and emotions that are just as strong. Seventy-four black granite panels are etched with the
names of more than 58,000 men and women who fought and died in the Vietnam War.
The monument is maintained by the ne men and women of Chapter 955 of the Vietnam Veterans of America Michael P. Callahan
Chapter and The American Legion Byron Pennington Post 184. Also in Columbus Park: a Memorial Lane that honors Wildwood
residents who fought and died in every war in the history of the United States.

Forgotten Warriors Vietnam Museum. A homage to veterans of the Vietnam War is the Forgotten Warriors Vietnam
Museum at the Cape May Airport in Rio Grande, adjacent to NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum.
Founded by Vietnam veteran Tom Collins, this collection of memorabilia includes uniforms and arms from both sides of the conict,
as well as a ag-draped cofn and an urn containing the ashes of a soldier lost in combat.
Veterans and survivors of veterans have donated medals, photos and other artifacts to this uniquely personal museum. Located at
the entrance to the museum are transport vehicles including a Huey gunship, combat truck and ambulance. Inside, tapes from Armed
Forces radio provide a tting soundtrack for this salute to those who risked and lost their lives in pursuit of freedom.
