Mission statement
VHC serves in a volunteer capacity as a catalyst to forge partnerships in order to provide care for patients in an effort to minimize delays in treatment, improve access to care for urgent problems, and minimize the use of emergency rooms for chronic health problems and in times of emergency.

Since its inception in 2006, VHC has acted as a bridge for those uninsured members of our community with health care needs requiring urgent follow-up after being seen at a local hospital. Our services have decreased emergency room visits and increased the health of our community in many ways. Because of our cherished public private partnerships, the great upheaval of the 2013 transition of public health care to the private sector caused our clinic to be closed for four months and decreased our ability to hold clinics in the time surrounding this transition. There was great uncertainty as to whether our services would continue to be needed. Because of this, the Baton Rouge Area Foundation convened a summit which was impressively attended by the CEOs of area hospitals who strongly and emphatically endorsed both our mission and the continued need for VHC. Encouraged by that support we re-organized VHC. With a dynamic board and executive director as well as a small but incredibly dedicated staff, we have been able to rise from the dismantling of the public health system and once again are positioned to be a strong bridge providing urgent follow-up between hospital care and the primary care clinics held Tuesday evenings. We have moved to an incredible new facility on Perkins Road which is more modern and more convenient for our volunteers. We have expanded the number of physicians interested in nightly clinics and are poised to grow even stronger than we were under our old partnerships. We were forced to evolve, and with this evolution our malpractice coverage is now provided free by the federal government, our labs are done onsite by a diagnostic machine purchased through generous grants from the Huey and Angelina Wilson Foundation and the Irene W. and C.B. Pennington Family Foundation, and our patients are offered new services including same day x-rays, assistance with smoking cessation, and on site HIV testing .
