Undergraduate students clerkships at Otolaryngology Service of Hospital de Clinics National University of Asuncion Chair: Prof. Dr.

Luis Costas Gastiaburo Program Coordinator Dr. Ta Ju Liu Principal Objectives To learn which are the common practices of otolaryngologist at the hospital To know which are the common pathologies at the ORL service To see and know which are the common surgeries done by Otolaryngologists To build cultural and social network exchange between worldwide. This program is developed to open the Paraguayan Otolaryngology practice to the world, and to promote international Otolaryngology or medicine practice relationship worldwide. All classes and practice is developed in Spanish, so exchange student should know basic Spanish, and also willing to learn Spanish during his/her stay. Rotations Rounds It is a major academic activity lead by the chief, which each patient on ward is discussed about diagnostic and treatment. Most of the professional of the service are demanded to participate the round, including academics, attending physician, residents and nursery staff. Aims at this rotation: To present a patient with full understanding of the diagnostic and treatment of the patient, as well as the pathology it is approached. Scientific Meetings These are meetings performed to discuss about new outlines of diagnostic or treatment in Otolaryngology, residents with attending physician presents article of journals or patients on ward that are interesting to review and discuss. Aims at this rotation: To present a article of some important journal of Otolaryngology and discuss about it. Operation Rooms Students are encouraged to watch surgeries related to Otolaryngology, including Ears,

Nose, Throat and Head and Neck Surgeries. It this chapter it is important to learn about instrumentals in ENT, and also to know the most common cases of Otolaryngology. Aims in this rotation: To help in the surgery as third or second assistant. Classes There are undergraduate students class and postgraduate students class (for residents). Exchange student are encourage to participate both of the classes to learn about conferences and lectures dictated by academics of Otolaryngology in Paraguay. Outward patient consults The patients are distributed in Ear and audiotest, Nose, General ENT, and Head and Neck pathologies consultations. Exchange student should get involved in all rotation so he or she could get to learn about most common pathologies in ENT and also about diagnostics and clinical practice of it. Aims of this rotation: To learn about most common pathologies in the specialty Schedule Monday 7 to 8 am Grand Round and Scientific Meeting 8 to 12 am outward patients attention Lunch time 1 pm to 5 pm Operation Room (Tonsils and Adenoids Surgeries) Tuesday 7 to 8 am Otolaryngology class (theory) 8 to 9 am Otolaryngology Class (practice) 9 to 12 am Nose Department Rotation Lunch Time 1 to 5 pm Operation Room (Ear Surgeries) Thursday 7 to 9 am Ear Specialized department and audiotests 9 to 12 am Outward patient consultation Lunch Time 1 to 5pm Operation Room (Head and Neck Department Surgeries)

Wednesday 7 to 9 am Rounds and scientific meetings 9 to 12 am Head and Neck Department Rotation Lunch Time 1 to 5 pm Operation Room (Nose Surgeries) Friday 7 to 12 am Ear Specialized department and audiotests Lunch Time 1 to 5 pm Operation Room Saturday 7 to 12 am Class with postgraduate students Students are encourage to take 1 on call day at ward a week, so he or she can get to watch and learn what are the duties at ward. A statistic report of a topic is required in the program. 4 weeks program are equivalent to 200 hours of practice At the end of the program, a certificate is expedited from the Chair of the Otolaryngology Service.
