Saint Joseph Parish Mission Statement:
The faith-filled parishioners of Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Arma, in union with the Blessed
Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, value tradition and prayer. We are committed to strong
leadership, responsive community service, and forming caring, welcoming, intimate relationships
with our fellow brothers and sisters. We seek to become a more diverse, vibrant, active church
family.

Notes from the Pastor: Once more, God has blessed us with another successful Spaghetti Feed. It
was well attended. Surely it has raised a substantial amount of money (I dont know yet how much
exactly) but more importantly it has strengthened the bond of our being a community and as a parish.
There were lots of people your family, relatives, and friends, from other places who came. There
were some people from Arma who are not catholic who joined us. Also, all those who in one way or
another contributed to the success of the event have shown their unity with the community. This
strengthening of the bond is priceless no amount of money could equal its value! So thanks be to
God. Thank you also to all who make this even successful. Thank you to Tom and Debbie
Amershek for chairing again this event! Thank you for the support of our parish and finance coun-
cils, our anniversary committee, and all those parishioners, though not belonging to any committee
but still sacrifice their time and efforts to make it happened! Thank you all and God will certainly
bless you for this undertaking. I hope you will not get tired of doing this and hopefully we can still
do it again next year!
Fr. John Lanzrath did a wonderful job and was really God sent in the parish mission in Girard.
Four parishioners from Arma were there. Two of them suggested that we will ask him to come to
Arma and do the Parish Mission hopefully for Advent. I already asked him and he said he will look
at his calendar and will let us know. Keep on praying and hopefully it will happen. In the meantime
continue to keep him in your prayers. In case you are interested Fr. Lanzrath has given me his power
point of the sessions. They are wonderful guide for reflection. I will post it at our facebook page so
you can take a look at it and reflect. Surely Gods grace will guide you in your prayerful reflection
especially in this season of penance!

St. Joseph: Husband of Our Lady
Most Catholics are aware of the date, March 19, the Feastday of St. Joseph.
I have read a good number of accounts of him, but I would venture to say
that Butlers Lives of the Saints records his life and words best. This volume
is one of the great classic works on Christian sainthood.
Butler begins by stating that March 19 is the Heavenly birthday of St.
Joseph, the date of his death in the first century. He was chosen by God to be
the foster father of His Son, and spouse of the Virgin Mary. As early as 900
A.D., that date was celebrated as Josephs feastday. Were acquainted with
his royal descent and his family history is explained both in St. Matthew and
St. Lukes gospels. He was the protector of Our Ladys good name and given
the responsibility to guide and support the holy family, including the educa-
tion of Him, who, though divine, loved to call Himself the son of man. Je-
sus learned Josephs trade of carpentry and imitated his manner of speech.
Mary, herself, seemed to confer full parental rights on Joseph when she said
without qualification, Thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing, which
is described in the fifth joyful mystery, The Finding of the Child in the Tem-
ple.
Joseph was a man of tremendous faith and his intense love for Jesus and
Mary is plain to see through his actions. He had his own personal annuncia-
tion when the Angel came to him and said to take Mary, who was with
child, and make her his wife. When the census was ordered, he took her with
him to Bethlehem. He found the manger for the Birth and was present when
Our Lord was laid in His crib for shepherds to offer worship. He was also in
the Temple when the Infant was placed in the arms of Simeon, the Prophet.
He was witness to the Presentation, as well, in the synagogue. When the An-
gel warned of impending danger, Joseph took her and the Child into Egypt to
flee King Herod. When the danger subsided, he returned them to Nazareth
and raised his son in what is called the hidden years. He and Mary took
Jesus to Jerusalem at the Passover when He was twelve and lost track of Him
debating with the teachers in the Temple. Jesus returns home with them and
is obedient to them, Scripture says. After this, Scripture no longer men-
tions St. Joseph, but tradition tells us that when his time came, Joseph was
rocked in Jesus arms, on or about 30 A.D., right before Jesus began His
public ministry. That is why St. Joseph is known as the Patron of a Happy
Death. After the Blessed Mother, no holier person ever lived. The Bible pays
him the highest compliment: St. Joseph was a just man., meaning, he
opened himself totally to what God wanted him to do. He was completely
obedient to God.

Workload Cut
Starting next week, Ill have only one article in the bulletin. Several fac-
tors make this necessary, all having to do with time. A few weeks ago, I be-
gan a new book, the lifestory of Lucile James, a colleague of mine at Fr.
Scott Community College for some 20 years, an instructor of English and
Literature. She was the unique teacher who could cut up in class, yet retain
discipline and respect. She influenced my teaching, but also became my
close friend, and later, a friend of my family. Rethinking the past years of
living, I count her alongside Fr. John Reinkemeyer as the two individuals,
outside of my family, who changed my life for the better. This daily writing
takes time.
In addition, as you know, this year marks the 50th anniversary of our St.
Joseph church building and because we were new converts at the time, Helen
and I were added to the Anniversary Committee to help plan the activities for
this year. Ive been asked to write a parish newsletter to be printed three
times during this year. Im also planning some type of religious dialogue a
couple of times during the year on various topics. The first one is scheduled
for March 25. With that said, I rest my case!! Now you see why I must cut
down to one article for the weekend bulletins.

Another event coming up: our pilgrimage tour to the
Cathedral and Pilsen this Saturday, March 22

. As of this
writing there are 24 who have registered (7 of these are
from Arma) and so we still have 31 more openings. The
fee is only $35.00 and if you want to go and could not
afford the fee please tell me or leave a message at the par-
ish office voicemail and we will find you a sponsor. We
are extending the registration until Thursday, March 20
th

The bus leaves in Arma at 7:30 for Girard and will leave
Girard at 8AM for the cathedral. Please bring your lunch
pack as we will eat at the hall of the cathedral after the
tour and will proceed to Pilsen. We have mass in Pilsen at
4PM and after that we will stop at a restaurant in El Dora-
do for dinner before heading home! Dont forget to bring
your camera!
I have a meeting this Tuesday, March 18
th
in Wichita
and could not say mass this evening and also no Stations
of the Cross. Since the following day is the feast of our
patron saint, Saint Joseph, the husband of Mary, we will
move our mass for this day to March 19
th

th
, Tuesday after the Stations of the Cross and
mass, Marcel Normand will be leading us in a theological
reflection and dialogue at the hall. Please come!
If you are in facebook, this is good news: I just created
a facebook page Saint Joseph Catholic Church Arma,
KS. For those who are not familiar with it, it is a social
networking site but has become a popular tool for commu-
nications by many businesses and churches for free.
Since many of you are on it, why not avail of it. For now it contains
pictures from the Rite of Election last Sunday at the cathedral and the
pictures of the Spaghetti Feed. It also contains daily mass scripture
readings, prayers, and other links to catholic religious pages. Please
visit our page and be updated of our parish and learn more of our
faith. Please extend the invitation to your family and friends especial-
ly those who leave far from here. For now it has 28 likes and hope-
fully more will make use of it!

St. Bridgets Parish is once again hosting a St. Joseph Table on Sun-
day, March 23rd from 11am to 2pm in the Faith and Family Center.
Entrees include: Spaghetti & Meatballs*Lasagna*Polenta*Stuffed
Cabbage Seafood Pasta Shell*Sausage & More. Each meal comes
with salad, Bruschetta, Garlic Bread, and home-made dessert. Cost is
