Common pracce of penance in the Archdiocese of Bombay
With Ash Wednesday on March 5, 2014, we begin a specially grace-lled season of Lent, during which we are invited to
meditate on the Passion, Death and Resurrecon of Our Lord. I urge all our people not to take this liturgical season as a
maer of roune, but to make every eort to spiritually benet from this period through more prayer, acts of penance
and works of charity. Lent should be for each one of us a sort of a spiritual retreat. I parcularly encourage you to
parcipate in programmes connected with the Year of the Eucharist.
Episcopal Conferences are authorised to determine, in place of absnence, other forms of penance, especially works of
charity and exercises of piety. The CCBI has discussed this and I am giving below several alternaves suggested. However,
I encourage our people to go back to our ancient pracce of absnence from all meats on Ash Wednesday and Fridays of
Lent, besides following one or more of the opons given. We need to be generous with the Lord. In memory of our Lords
Passion on Good Friday, and so that the fruits of Lent connue throughout the year, I recommend that we abstain from
meat on all Fridays of the year. The Eastern Catholic Churches have much to teach us from their strict observance of Lent.
This is also a me for sacramental Confession. Do not wait for Holy Week, but already now benet from the graces oered
by the Sacrament of Reconciliaon. During the last Synod of Bishops, the Sacrament of Reconciliaon was recommended
as a means for New Evangelisaon.
Canon 1249 states: All Christs faithful are obliged by divine law, each in his own way, to do penance. However, so that
all may be joined together in a certain common pracce of penance, days of penance are prescribed. On these days,
the faithful are in a special manner to devote themselves to prayer, to engage in works of piety and charity and to deny
themselves by fullling their obligaons more faithfully, and specially by observing fast and absnence.
The days for the common pracce of penance are Ash Wednesday and every Friday of the year.
Alternave forms of penance suggested in the Archdiocese of Bombay are:
A. Forms of Prayer:
a. Aending Mass.
b. Making the Way of the Cross.
c. A visit to the Blessed Sacrament.
d. Prayerfully reading the Scriptures or Praying the Liturgy of the Hours.
e. For the home bound: reading the Scriptures and Meditang on the Lords Passion.
f. Family Prayer together (the Rosary, or Scripture Reading and Reecon or some other prayer).
B. Acts of Penance:
a. Missing a meal: breakfast, lunch or supper.
b. Taking strictly vegetarian meals, avoiding even sh and eggs.
c. Abstaining from alcohol and/or smoking, for those accustomed to these.
d. Avoiding lms/television and other forms of recreaon.
THE EXAMINER MARCH 01 - 07, 2014 5
C. Works of Charity:
a. Giving 10% of ones daily earnings in charity.
b. Oering a meal to a poor family.
c. Oering voluntary service for some social/charitable work.
d. Vising the sick/aged/lonely.
e. Donang blood.
Fasng :
a) The days prescribed for fasng are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Some may feel inspired to fast every Friday in Lent,
and this is a benecial spiritual exercise.
b) The law of fasng binds those who have completed their 18
th
year ll the beginning of the 60
th
year.
c) Those who are fasng are to take only one full meal per day. A light breakfast may be taken in the morning and a light
supper in the evening. But one can always reverse the order of the meals, e.g. take the full meal in the evening instead
of the aernoon.
d) Those who cannot keep the law of fasng without considerable di culty because of health, work etc. are excused from
the observance of the law. Our faithful are however urged not to excuse themselves too easily from this obligaon, as it is
but ng that on the two prescribed days of fasng, we unite ourselves in a special manner with the Passion and Death
of Our Saviour by a more intense form of penance.
Dispensaon:
In case of di culty regarding the fullment of the obligaon of common penance and fasng or a doubt regarding
the existence of factors excusing from these obligaons, a dispensaon may be obtained from the Parish Priest or
Confessor.
A dispensaon from the law of common penance and fasng is hereby granted to members of the Armed Forces and
Security Personnel in the Archdiocese and to travellers by land, sea or air.
Lenten Alms:
The Lenten Alms collected this year have been earmarked for St Pius X College, Goregaon - Diocesan Seminary of Bombay.
Easter Dues:
Easter Dues would require that the faithful who have made their First Communion, should receive Holy Communion at
least once a year during the Paschal me, unless for a good reason the precept is fullled at another me during the year
(Can. 920) Besides, the faithful are reminded that those who have reached the age of discreon are bound to confess
their grave sins at least once a year (Can. 989).
In the Archdiocese of Bombay, the Easter Dues can be fullled this year between Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2014, and
Pentecost Sunday, June 8, 2014.

I wish each one of you a grace-lled season of Lent.

O
n Ash Wednesday, Chrisans consciously take a decision to embark on a new
direcon of contrion and conversion in their daily living. This day marks the
beginning of the start of Lent a season of penitence and preparaon renewing
our commitment to the call of Prophet Joel to journey with the Lord to a new Risen life
with Him. At this liturgical celebraon, a designated Chrisan, a minister, impose ashes
and signs the Cross on their foreheads, saying the words: Remember that you are dust,
and to dust you shall return, to unfold the signicance of Lent.
It is always amazing how many people eagerly ock to churches for this popular
sacramental of ashes to hear reminders of mourning and mortality. Aer all, we get those
all the me. Loved ones die. Our own bodies show signs of wear. We are in the midst of
broken situaons and broken communies, and we never have to look far to see decay
and corrupon.
However, it must be said that despite the many reminders of mortality which surround
us, we also live in a culture of denial by a wayward life of untruth, wanton corrupon and
proigate sin. Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return, simply puts the
truth before us that we must die to these acts by genuine repentance and abnegaon. It is
an awesome, if unwelcome, starng point for a relaonship with Gods grace.
The peoples eagerness to receive ashes makes more sense in light of sacramental
theology. In the light of Christ, in the hope of Christ, our mortality is not something to be
feared or denied. In fact, mortality, with its inevitable suering, is something we share
with every one of our human brothers and sisters. While we might think of mortality in
connecon with the isolaon of loss, the dust we share can be a point of connecon.
Chrisan theology speaks of a sacramental as an earthly element that bring us into Gods
presence, by virtue of Christs Incarnaon and redempon disposing us to the promise of
the reality of grace, forgiveness, nourishment, communion, redempon and eternal life.
The Church points to three ancient tried and tested penitenal pathways of connecng to
God during Lent. There is fasng when we give up certain foods. The trouble and eort
to give up food or pracse a carbon fast makes us realise how trapped we are in the self-
gracaon of a consumer culture. Our economy is fuelled by consumpon and enslaved
to luxurious comfort. This penance leads us towards genuine liberaon for an encounter
with God. The pracce of almsgiving reminds us that we have a responsibility to others. We
need a spirit of self-sacrice to show concern and solidarity with our neighbours, and live
harmoniously. The third path is that of reviving in our life the potenal of prayer to unify all
the sectors of life around Christ and establish an open line to communing with God.
Somemes, we put o our renewal as Catholics to the future, a future that never quite
comes. St Paul writes that 'Now' is the grace-lled hour. 'Now' is the me when we revise
and remodel our lives. 'Now' is the me to reverse our destrucve choices by dying to self
and refreshing our lives in the truth of Word and Life. This calls for living a kenosis a
Eucharisc spirituality which we celebrate and commit to in this Naonal 'Year of the
Eucharisc'. If we do so, Lent will not be for us a season of gloom, but of hope.

he Bible is a book that contains Gods Word. It is
a direct inspired revelaon of God to humankind
(ref 2 Tim 3:16). Some people think that the Bible
is not from God, but from man. The Bible is
not mans aempt to write about God. 2 Pet
1:20-21 clearly tells us that scripture
came from Gods will and
not mans will. It is God
Himself speaking to us. It
contains a record of what He
has done and what He will do. It
contains His plan for us. It contains
answers to the many quesons
we may have. Besides, it is not
addressed to one parcular
culture or language group.
Anyone, anywhere in the world,
nds that it speaks to him/her.
Jesus Himself believed that
the Old Testament was Gods
Word and that He came to
fulll it.
Some feel that
the Bible has
nothing to
say about modern life; it is so ancient that it does
not understand todays situaons. On the contrary, it is
very relevant for the 21
st
century. It answers every single
queson and addresses every problem. It touches every
area of life, including relaonships, marriage, work ethic,
a tudes, reacons, responses, how to treat people
every aspect of living is covered in the pages of the Bible.
It discusses issues such as rape, murder, incest, cruelty,
war, crime and punishment. It talks about a man who was
wrongly imprisoned (Joseph), a teenage girl kidnapped
into sexual slavery (Esther), and a man who was beheaded

for cricising a king (John the Bapst). It has feel-good
messages and upliing ones. In short, it shows us how to
live. Unfortunately, we cannot just keep the Bible on our
shelf and expect to get answers to lifes problems by merely
possessing it. We have to actually take it in hand and read it.
First we have to enter into a relaonship with God, and then
when we read His Word, He begins to work in us. Without
knowing the Living Word, one cannot experience the power
of the Wrien Word. As we build our rapport with Him, His
presence will become so real, that when we read the Bible it
will seem like a face-to-face encounter, and we will be able to
nd the answers to our quesons.
So where does one start? Most people try to read the
Bible like any other book, starng at the beginning. The Bible
is a library of books and the rst book is Genesis, which is
a good foundaon for the 'library' but it is not necessarily
a good starng place for a beginner. It is part of the Old
Testament books which speaks of the origin of man, how
people behaved, and how God spoke to them directly. It is
recommended that we read one of the Gospels of the New
Testament. The Gospels are at the heart of our faith
in Jesus. Begin preferably with the gospel of
Mark which is the shortest. A good
idea is to open the Bible with
prayer, asking God to
reveal Himself to you as
you read it. He will help you
understand it.
The Bible is alive and powerful.
It is the only book that can totally
transform you from the inside out.
It is the source of truth. Jesus said,
If you connue in My Word you
will know the truth, and the truth
will set you free." (John 8:31-32)
It gives us divine wisdom when
human wisdom is unable to
cope. It is the book that
every home must have,
and we must become
familiar with the
message it has for
us. Let us pray that we may be rooted in Gods Word.
And when we allow these words to become part of our
inner being, then our whole body will likewise speak forth
Gods Word through our acons.
Are you spending me meditang on Gods Word daily? If
not, let me encourage you to begin today. Ask God to reveal
Himself to you in a fresh, new way. Let Him speak to your
heart of His will for you. Depend on Gods Word for your
daily Chrisan living. Read it like a living leer from God and
not as wrien commandments/instrucons. Yes, there are
some things that are very di cult to understand, but when
you read with an open mind, God speaks to your heart and
you will discover that the Bible is a 'living' book and the
author a 'living' author, even though it was wrien more
than two thousand years ago.
The Bible has the answer to all our
questions in the 21
st
century.
THE EXAMINER MARCH 01 - 07, 2014 9
he Word of God is the
foundaon of all things and
is fruiul when it becomes
a reality in our lives. It is our
strength and it gives consolaon. It is
very important to have a real encounter
with the Word of God. It is important to
culvate openness to God as well as to
have devout prayerful spiritual
readings of the Bible. The
pracce of Leco Divina (Lan
for 'Divine reading')should be
promoted in our families and
parishes communies. It brings
about a transformaon and
blessings in our lives.
All of us the ordained,
the consecrated, the laity
have the responsibility to
spread the Word of God. There
should be frequent reading of
Divine Scriptures. We speak
to God when we pray and
we listen to Him when we
read Sacred Scriptures.
Diligent reading of
the Scriptures will
help us enter
into an inmate
dialogue with God. We
will be in communion with
Christ and will also increase
our knowledge of Christ. Just as we
all need physical exercise to keep us
well, we need to have regular spiritual
exercises for the soul. Study/reecon
of the Scriptures leads us to love God.
When we look at the Jewish
tradion we see that the Torah was
read in the synagogue and learnt by
heart so that the spiritual experiences
would connue in their lives. They
would read and meditate me and
again on the Word of God. The Word
of God was near to them in their
hearts and in their mouths
through meditaon, vocal
prayer and contemplaon.
In the early Church
communies too there was a
focus on prayer in households.
These Chrisans assembled to
read the Scriptures and pray.
The Fathers of the
Church too believed
that it was necessary
to pray to understand
the Scriptures. A monk
prays and works,
and the four
spiritual steps
which form the
ladder to heaven
were reading,
meditaon, prayer
and contemplaon.
The mouth of the monk
is sacred as he prays and
voices the Bible. The life of
a monk should become the Word of
God. Pope Benedict in Verbum Domini
calls Leco Divina a new spiritual
springme. It is a prayerful approach
to the sacred text. Leco Divina gives
importance to the Word. In meditaon,
God can deepen our faith, prompt the
conversion of our heart and strengthen
our will to follow Christ.
There are four movements in Leco
Divina, namely, Leco (reading),
Contemplation,

Meditao (meditaon), Orao (prayer),
and Contemplao (contemplaon). It
is important to choose a xed me, a
convenient place, a theme and pray to
the Holy Spirit.
One has to quieten down to hear
Gods Word. We then have to culvate
the ability to listen. We must hear with
the ears of our hearts. St Benedict
says the voice of God speaks soly
in meditaon. Next, take a word that
touches you and reect on it. Mother
Mary pondered things in her heart.
What is God saying to us through the
text? What does God want to reveal
to us through this passage? It is a
heart-to-heart conversaon. Though
we may nd ourselves fearful of what
we are called to do, we may then
feel emboldened by the condent
example of Jesus. This is the challenge.
Contemplaon is the desnaon of
Leco Divina and Wisdom which leads
to salvaon (2 Tim 3:15). Prayer should
lead us to and move us to acon. It
is this contemplaon which moves a
believer to make his or her life a gi for
others in charity.

hen the devil came to him and said: if you are the
Son of God, order these stones to turn into bread.
But Jesus answered, Scripture says: one does not
live on bread alone, but on every word that comes
from the mouth of God. (Mt 4:3-4)
Whilst giving humans this right to stewardship, He also
taught us to take care of and respect His creaon and to
sustain and replenish the land. But if we were to look closely,
do we feel that we have done that? Are we really playing our
part as individuals in doing what God has asked us to do or
have we simply taken advantage of Gods kindness?
Giving human beings dominion
included permission to use animals
as a source of food which is
admissible, but if that becomes
excessive, and the result
damaging to the lives of others
and the environment, then we
need to take steps in order to
stop or at least reduce some of
the damage that we are causing.
Aer loving God with all our hearts,
all our souls and all our minds as He
taught us, He commanded us to love
our neighbours as ourselves. We must be
conscious that this meant both the direct acons of
loving, caring and giving etc. but also through choices
that aect others indirectly.
This weeks acon is to reduce beef consumpon.
The process by which most beef is produced, unfortunately
contributes to climate change in several ways, including
deforestaon from using more land for producon, more
methane from more animals especially cale, making
and transporng ferliser, and burning fossil fuels to run
machinery. It is a major contributor to global warming with
farming and producon contribung about 18 per cent of total
greenhouse gases through the emission of carbon dioxide,
nitrous oxide and methane gases into the atmosphere.
Though dairy producon does not rank as high as beef

If we were to make comparisons between beef and chicken
producon for example, cows give o more methane which
they belch into the atmosphere through ruminant producon
(an eect of having four stomachs!). Chickens do not graze,
and do not produce methane through belching and cause far
fewer emissions during producon.
Cheese, like beef, requires the same ruminant producon,

beef at 17.5 kg.
Have you taken part in Meat-free Mondays or Dairy-free
Days and thought it was a bit easy? This year for Lent, we
are asking Carbon Fasters to go without beef (or dairy for
vegetarians) for three out of the seven days this week, and
you are free to choose whichever days you do it. For hard-
core carbon fasters, why not try going a whole seven days
without beef or dairy?
Whichever level you wish to do, be sure to have fun doing it
and try out dierent recipes that do not involve these products.
Prayer: Father, we thank you for your Creaon, including
the plants and animals and the diversity which they bring.
Help us to care for them wisely and sustainably, so we can
help to preserve precious ecosystems you made and food
supplies for people which you have blessed us with. We
pray for increased awareness about
the contribuon of meat producon
and consumpon to climate
change, and for leaders across
the world who have the
responsibility in negoang
how to tackle climate change.
Please help them to be bold and
ambious in how they respond,
remembering that the poorest
and most vulnerable people who
are hit hardest have done the least to
cause it. Amen.
Bonus acon: The world produces enough
food for everyone, but not everyone has enough
food. Last month, we launched an excing new
campaign called the Enough food for everyone IF
campaign which saw many come together to tackle the issue
of global hunger. The aim of the campaign is to prevent one in
every eight persons globally going to bed hungry every night
and 2.8 million children dying from malnutrion, each year.
Please connue to pray for and remember those around the
world that struggle to feed themselves daily due to the eects
of climate change, and also pray for our government and
world leaders especially in the run up to the G8 in June to not
only sck to the promises they have made on aid, but also for
good governance and decision making geared towards tackling
climate change to help the worlds poorest people.

not just something involving us Chrisans alone;
it also has a prior dimension which is simply
human, involving everyone. It means protecng
all Creaon, the beauty of the created world, as the Book

It means respecng each of Gods creatures and respecng
the environment in which we live. (Pope Francis, Inaugural

How heavy is your carbon footprint?
Each of us has a carbon footprint, a lifestyle that causes the
release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which in turn
has a direct impact on global warming and climate change.
Creaon is a beauful gi from God that we must nurture

to come. We must also realise our responsibility towards
nature which provides us with all the needs of life.

How 'Open Secret'
changed my life
A fans rst-hand account of her favourite gospel band.
I will never forget those two days October 20 and 21,
2012. It was a weekend that changed how I looked at
gospel music. Because the truth is, that weekend changed
me, in many ways, forever.
'Open Secret' was in town,
and by town I mean my
parish. This was a gospel
band (Chrisan Rock and
Worship Band, they like to
call themselves) that took
the stage and in the space
of two hours, each day,
simply turned my life upside
down. While ours was an all-youth gathering, I have
been following this band closely ever since, and what
has amazed me is that I have seen the same results with
people of all ages.
So just what makes an 'Open Secret' concert special?
I have heard it said by many fellow Open Secret fans. First
of all, the concerts are never a performance. Because, while
the music is magical in itself (they are immensely gied
musicians), what is unique is the fact that they endeavour
to make the evening more of an experience that stays with
you long aer the last note has been played. The band gets
you so immersed and involved that you leave the role of
audience behind and become one with them together
celebrang Gods redeeming love. Open Secret took me on
a rollercoaster of emoons that October, srring my soul
in ways I had never known possible before. They made
me laugh. They made me cry. They made me see myself,
through my Heavenly Fathers eye.
The band got together in April 2008, bound by their love
for music, a love that was only exceeded by their love for
the One who gave it to them. At rst you wonder, why
the name Open Secret? For those curious like I was,
there is a heart-warming anecdote that the band once put
up on their o cial Facebook page regarding this (go check
it out). For now, all I will say is that is based on John 7:10,
and a whole lot of divine anoinng.
Anointed as they are, along the way, Open Secret have
also found creave new ways of blending the message
with the music. One of their most loved and popular
innovaons is what they call the concept concert. This
began in December 2012, in the form of an exclusive
Advent evening called O Come All Ye Faithful. Based on
the Infancy Narraves, this is a series of concerts aimed
at pu ng Christ back into Christmas. Then followed the
Lenten version. Called, The Journey Home, this concert is
based on the Way of the Cross, with the band bringing alive
every staon through song. These concept concerts are so
high on emoon, at mes I have felt like I am at a healing
retreat. Aer nine Advent (across 2012 and 2013) and six
Lenten (in 2013) concert evenings, Open Secret will once
again take the stage with Season 2 of The Journey Home,
srring souls everywhere in their own inimitable way.
And that is, ulmately, what
I am most thankful for. That
through ve guys on stage,
I have, me and again,
experienced healing, love
and grace untold.
Thank you, Open Secret.
And thank You, God, for
using and choosing this
Chrisan Rock and Worship
Band to help me draw ever closer to you.

NOTES COMMENTS
The Bible and the Eucharist
FR ROLAND FIALHO
March 2 is Bible Sunday and 2014 has been declared as
the Year of the Eucharist in the Archdiocese of Bombay. I
thought that perhaps we could look at the evoluon of the
Eucharist in the Bible.
Going to the genesis of the Eucharist and its development
in the Old Testament, Melchizedek pre-gured Christ. When
Abram returned from his victory over Chedor-laomer in Gen
14:18, Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine;
he was a priest of God the Most High to bless Abram, pre-
guring the bread and wine consecrated by a priest at Mass.
Moses: He read out the Torah to all of the six
hundred thousand Israelite people assembled
at the foot of Mt Sinai and sprinkled the
blood of the sacriced oxen on the people,
saying in Ex 24:8, Behold the Blood of
the Covenant which the Lord has made
with you.
The Bread of the Presence: In the
ancient Tabernacle and later in the
Temple, 1 Kings 7:48 pregured Jesus
in the Holy Eucharist. Jesus told us in Mt
28:20, I am with you always.
The Old Testament sacrice of a lamb,
was important. Isaiah had prophesied
that the Lamb of God would be humble and
submit in the midst of Injusce and Suering. Isaiah
53:7, He was oppressed and he was a icted, yet he opened
not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter and like
a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so he opened not
his mouth.
Elijah: At a me when the land was parched from lack of
rain, God sent Elijah the Tishbite to the brook Cherith, that is
east of the river Jordan, promising in 1 Kings 17:4, You shall
drink from the brook and I have commanded the ravens to
feed you there. So Elijah went, And the ravens brought him
bread in the morning and meat in the evening; and he drank
from the brook.
Psalm 23 contains the Eucharisc prophesy in verse 5:
Thou has prepared a table before me in the presence of
my enemies. As we eat what God gives us, we will fear no
evil, but will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Another
Interpretaon God will change my enemies into my friends
and I will fellowship with them.
Ezekiel: God pre-gured the Holy Eucharist through the
prophet Ezekiel. Ez 3:3, Son of man, eat this scroll that I give
you and ll your stomach with it. Then I ate it; and it was in
my mouth as sweet as honey. Jesus oen used the tle, Son
of Man, for eg in Mt 8:20, The Son of Man has no place
to lay his head. In the Eucharist we have Two Tables. The
Table of the Word and the Table of the Eucharist.
New Testament: At the Last Supper, in Lk 22:14-23, Jesus
said, I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you
before I suer. Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had
given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is
my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of
me. And he did the same with the cup aer supper, saying,
This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in
my blood.
The New Covenant is beer than the Old Covenant: i) The
Old Covenant involved the blood of animals, and the New
Covenant is the Blood of Jesus, the Son of God. ii) The Old
Covenant was raed by sprinkling the blood externally, but
in the New Covenant we drink the Blood internally. The Jews
believed that there was life in the Blood. So each me we
receive Communion, we are receiving the very life of God
in us. The life of uncondional forgiveness and
love. But while we thank God for the privileges
of the New Covenant, let us not forget Jesus
words in Lk 12:48, From whom much is
given, much will be demanded.
Heb 9:9, 14 says, The Blood of Jesus
cleanses our conscience. Puries
our inner self from dead acons. So
whatever is disturbing our conscience
and whatever bondages we have, as
we come to the Eucharist, we can
place them in the Chalice. As we receive
Communion, we claim these two promises
and experience the peace and deliverance
the Lord will give us.
We nally have the consummaon of the Eucharist at
the eschatological banquet as we read in Rev 19:7-10, in the
marriage supper of the Lamb, where the Church is the Bride.
Let our parcipaon at each Eucharist prepare us for this
great banquet, because He wants a Bride who is glorious,
with no speck or wrinkle, but holy and faultless. (Eph 5:27)
Reections on International
Womens Day Celebration
DR SR PAULINE CHAKKALAKAL, DSP
[Since March 8 falls on a weekday, parishes are exhorted to
observe Womens Day at a Sunday Eucharisc celebraon.]
The liturgical readings of the rst Sunday of Lent highlight
Gods gi of freedom to choose between good and evil. While
human beings succumb to the temptaon of self-sasfacon
and glory as depicted in the rst reading from Genesis, Jesus
triumphs over all forms of egocentric temptaons, namely
power, pomp and presge (Mt 4:1-11). The disobedience of
THE EXAMINER MARCH 01 - 07, 2014 15

the rst human couple that resulted in a broken relaonship
between them and God and the rest of creaon, has been
re-established through the obedience of the one man Jesus
Christ as expressed by St Paul in the days second reading
(Rom 5:12-19).
In keeping with the spirit of the Archdiocese, the Parish
that celebrates Internaonal Womens Day, would do well
to reect on the man-woman partnership, intended by God
in the book of Genesis. Instead of falling into the blame-
game trap or temptaon, described in the story of the fall
in Genesis 3, let our focus be on the fact that man and
woman, created in Gods image and likeness (Gen 1: 26-27),
are meant to be partners with God in Gods creave work
and stewards of creaon. The commission to be fruiul and
mulply and nurture the earth is given to them jointly (Gen
1:28). Therefore, neither man nor woman can monopolise
responsibility, leadership and decision making.
The rib story (Gen 2), despite its patriarchal tone, does not
advocate male superiority and female inferiority. Although
the concept helpmate has been commonly used to degrade
woman, it is to be noted that the Hebrew word ezer,
translated as help or helper is oen applied to God in the
Old/First Testament. When referring to God, the term ezer
means strength or power. Thus, the proper descripon of
Eve in Genesis 2:18 is a strength or power or partner equal
and corresponding to him. Undoubtedly, the text alludes to
a relaonship of equality and mutuality between the rst
human couple, which is derived from the fact of their being
created in Gods image, the basis of human dignity.
On this day, let us thank God for women from all walks of
life and religions, including Chrisan women, who contribute
to the life and mission of the Church and society. As a
community in the discipleship of equals (Mt 23:3-10; Gal
3:26-28), let us resolve to inspire change and be the inspiring
change that will bring about individual and structural
transformaon. May we also resolve to study and implement
the empowering and liberang views and proposals oered
by the CBCI Gender Policy Document.
Fifty years of the 38

MAMTA VATS
A Symposium for commemorang 50 years of the 38
th

Internaonal Eucharisc Congress (I.E.C.) was held on
February 22, 2014, at Alberione Hall, St Pauls Complex,
Bandra (W), organised by Fr Terence Murray, Director of
the Diocesan Catechecal Centre, Mumbai. The chief guest
was Bishop Dominic Savio Fernandes, Auxiliary Bishop of
Bombay. There were 250 parcipants consisng of Priests,
Religious and the Lay faithful. The moderator of the event
was Mr Royston Braganza.
The focus was on The Eucharist, the theme of this
year 2014. The speakers focused on dierent aspects of
Eucharisc Spirituality.
How to imbibe a Eucharisc Spirituality in our Daily
Lives was explained by Fr Dominic Hary Ko . He stressed
on making the Eucharist a part of us, living it in our families,
society and touching the lives of all those whom we come
into contact with.
How to imbibe a Eucharisc Spirituality in the Life and
Ministry of a Priest was clearly expressed by Msgr Alex
Rebello. He very beaufully portrayed the importance of the
Eucharist as the source and centre in the life and ministry of a
priest, in vicmhood, servanthood and brotherhood.
How to imbibe a Eucharisc Spirituality in the Life and
Ministry of a Religious was presented by Sr Dr Teresa Joseph,
FMA. For the Religious, the Eucharist is the source of love and
service. Their life is a reecon of the love for Jesus through
their works of service to society.
How to imbibe a Eucharisc Spirituality in the context of
an Interfaith Marriage was described by Mrs Mamta Vats.
Jesus is the third person in the marriage and with Jesus as their
role model they can face lifes challenges very condently.
How to imbibe a Eucharisc Spirituality in the context
of a Catholic Family was explained by Mr Luis Miranda. He
brought out the most important aspects of the Eucharist
which was giving, breaking and sharing of the Bread. The
Eucharist is the centre of family life where the family sits
together at the table, shares the meal together, dialogues
with each other and there is a bonding between them.
How to imbibe a Eucharisc Spirituality in the context of
Ones Workplace was touched on by Immanuel Joseph (Jesus
Youth). One can share Jesus with colleagues introducing
Jesus, proclaiming Jesus, personal sacrices and iniang
small communies.
Sr Anna Maria, from the Sisters of Charity gave a very
touching presentaon of how the Eucharist has inuenced
their lives and enkindled in them a zeal to work for the less
fortunate and handicapped brethren through the Word of
God, the Eucharist and the poor.
Bishop Dominic Savio Fernandes then invited us to reect
through a tesmony on how we need to be like the Eucharist
to others and gave us his blessing.
The Symposium was an eye-opener to every parcipant,
to make the Eucharist the centre of his/her life, to derive our
strength and courage from Him, to give to others freely what
we have received and to keep our eyes and energies focused
on the day He comes in glory.

The Young Citizen and
the Ailing Republic
On a sunny afternoon, in the historic hall of St Xaviers
College, Fort, Mumbai, gathered the young students of this
esteemed instuon to learn from and pose quesons to
the elderly trustees of AGNI on what ails the Republic. AGNI
led by Mr Gerson da Cunha and accompanied by Sharad
Kumar and Shyama Kulkarni, all well into their twilight years,
held an interacve presentaon on How Mumbai votes on
February 18, 2014. Dr (Fr) Frazer Mascarenhas, SJ, Principal
of St Xaviers, welcomed the AGNI team and Mr Nandan
Maluste of Mumbai First, even as he leads an instuon to
mould the young into becoming uncommon minds to nd
soluons for the common man.
Mumbai has an average of 46 per cent voter turnout
during the General Elections and therefore candidates
who win, are elected generally with 16 per cent or less of

the total votes. Apathy of the Middle Class and especially
the young towards their responsibilities as citizens of
the Republic is the most important reason for lack of
parcipaon in democracy. The young were informed of the
steps taken to strengthen democracy with the intervenon
of the Supreme Court and a watchful Media.
The AGNI team was heartened to learn that most of the
young present had already registered as voters and proved
that they are aware of the socio-politico affairs of the
Republic. The young were exhorted to form Local Acon
Groups in their neighbourhood and seek the help of A-Ward
AGNI Co-ordinator, Ms Jennifer Shetty, present at the
meeng, for guidance before and aer the polling day.
World Marriage Day
The Family Cell of St Teresa Church, Girgaum, organised
World Marriage Day in their Parish on Sunday, February
9, 2014, with a special Mass that was aended by over
30 couples from the Parish besides other Parishioners.
The couples that attended this Special Mass ranged
from those who were married for more than 50 years to
newlyweds. The couples renewed their wedding vows as
well as celebrated the beauty, sacrice and joy in daily
married life during the Mass with appropriate prayers.
This was followed by a get-together with their families in
the hall where the oldest to the youngest couples were
acknowledged. The live music, fellowship and games for
married couples and families had terric parcipaon and
plenty of excitement.
Carnival re-dened!
On Feb 22, Bishop Bosco Penha was the Chief Guest at the
St Josephs Community 5
th
Annual Carnival Celebration.
Community 19 - St Josephs, of Sacred Heart Church,
SantaCruz, demonstrated a living faith by inviting
Community 17 - St Francis Xavier to partner with them
in their annual Carnival celebrations. Built on the sound
premise of building a strong community that rallies together
on civic issues, and who play and pray together, this years
Carnival shone for several reasons.
Seven Floats with unique themes got the neighbourhood
buzzing with hide-out pracces. Senior cizens to mommies
with babies to working professionals stole me out of their
daily humdrum lives for rehearsals. Two weeks of make
your plan; build your props; get your act together; did
not impose on personal or professional commitments and
that worked for everyone.
Feb 22 D-day, and the fun quotient was high. With
close to 400 people, parcipants and audience, the posive
energy was palpable. A well-orchestrated parade brought
on centre-stage oats with a great balance of fun, esta
and tongue n cheek. From the Mario Miranda oat that
brought alive all his favourite characters, Ms Fonseca and
Ms Nimbupani rife with feni, choris pav and cantar; reggae
beat One Love; Agla Station Mumbai the confusion,
chaos and avour of our city; East meets West theme from
Cowboys to Lungi heroes; a talk show that put God in the
hot seat, probing answers to corrupon, aboron, crime
and all the hard quesons in life; Sports meets Carnival that
celebrated our Sports icons to Indie Hop that was a salute to
the common man and his daily dance of life that eventually
becomes a celebration which bagged the rolling trophy
for best oat this year to super stage shows by school-kids
trained by youth from the community, rocked the Carnival.
With food stalls that showcased local talent and offered
a platform to the neighbourhoods favourite bhel-puri
bhaiyas, the Carnival was truly a celebraon of life.
The surplus from the Carnival will be ploughed into an
educaon bourse for the local schools St Teresas and

Activists remember nun
murdered for tribal rights
Human Right activists in New Delhi paid rich tributes to
a Catholic nun, who was hacked to death two years ago
after she campaigned against coal miners to secure tribal
rights in Jharkhand. At a meeting over the weekend,
Church workers joined activists to remember Sr Valsa
John of the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary, who was
killed in the coal mine areas of Pachuwara in Jharkhand
on November 15, 2011. They discussed tribal rights
and issues of lopsided development projects displacing
villagers, stressing that injustice against tribals continues
in the villages of India. Two books were also released to
cherish the values for which the nun sacrificed her life.
The nun was killed after about 50 people broke into her
room, part of a villagers hut deep inside the village.
Police said Maoist pamphlets were found at the scene of
the crime.
Police could not establish the cause of the aack on her
despite the arrest of several local persons, but her friends
and colleagues believe she was killed for mobilising people
against the exploitaon by mining corporaons. Sr Valsa,
who worked among the Santhal tribals for many years, had
made Panchwara her home and organised the tribals when
they were faced with displacement after large portions
of land were allocated to a West Bengal-based mining
company. Speakers at the panel discussion on Tribals, land
rights and Development pointed out that Sr Valsas eort
was to protect the land, which is most sacred to the tribals.
Her non-compromising a tude and demands to respect the
rights of the people irked the mine management, who saw
her as a hindrance. Speakers said company o cials went
around insgang and encing the simple village youth with
money and liquor. They managed to polarise the people,
which ulmately led to her murder. A fact-nding team that
visited the village soon aer her death demanded a Federal
CBI enquiry into the murder as well a white paper on the
terms and condions of the mining contract. But nothing
much had happened. A book tled, Peoples Valsa: In the
Footsteps of Her Master was released. It is edited by Srs
Helen Saldanha and Mary Scaria. Sr Saldanha is secretary
of the Indian Bishops O ce for Women while Sr Scaria is a
human rights acvist lawyer praccing in New Delhi.

Golden Jubilee of Jesuit Martyr
Hectic preparations are going on in Kutungia parish of
Ranchi archdiocese as it gears up for the golden jubilee
celebration of the Jesuit martyr, Fr Herman Rasschaert.
With barely one and a half month to go, the Jesuits have
undertaken the task of making a documentary lm on the
martyrdom of Fr Rasschaert, who was killed while trying to
protect people against rioters in 1964. Some senior Jesuits
have visited the sites connected with the missioner and
met and interviewed people under the guidance of Fr Jailas
Kullu, the parish priest. Along with the various commiees,
he is undertaking the planning and preparations of the
upcoming jubilee celebraon.
Fr Rasschaert was born in exile in the Netherlands on
September 13, 1922. He entered the Society of Jesus on
September 07, 1941 and arrived in India in November 1947.
He was killed at Gerda on March 24, 1964. From January
1964 onwards, atrocities had made thousands of Hindu
refugees ee East Pakistan; hundreds of them, some with
mulated bodies, were sent by train from Calcua through
North Orissa to re-settlement areas in Madhya Pradesh.
Their sight provoked riots in Jamshedpur and Rourkela.
Armed bands began to aack isolated Muslim houses and
hamlets; Muslims ed north to bigger Muslim centres like
Gerda, a village of 36 Muslim and 18 Catholic houses, 12 km
from Kutungia. Hundreds of them jammed the compound of
the mosque on Monday, March 23, 1964.
The same aernoon, a mob of thousands surrounded the
mosque-compound and some Muslims were killed. After
Mass, the next day on March 24, the missioners catechist
told him what was happening in Gerda. After a prayer
reecon, he rode his cycle and went to Gerda to pacify
them but he was killed.

We can achieve our demands only through political

Ash Wednesday fund
to feed poor children
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of Manila has proposed re-
launching the Fast2Feed Fund Campaign on March 5, Ash
Wednesday, to feed 250,000 malnourished children. In a
letter to Pondo ng Pinoy (PnP) foundation, the Cardinal
urged the faithful to donate to the programme as an act of
solidarity with the poor. PnP has been able to raise huge
funds by collecng 25 centavos from members belonging
to various dioceses to help the poorest in society. Cardinal
Tagle said that 50,000 children of the targeted 250,000
will come from PnP member dioceses and areas hit by
calamies. Many dioceses suered a series of natural and
man-made calamities last year. To alleviate hunger and
malnutrion among children aected by calamies, Hapag
Asa aims to intensify its feeding activities in partnership
with concerned dioceses. It will feed malnourished children
aged six months to 12 years once a day for ve days a
week for six months with nutrious food. It would only
cost 10 pesos a day to feed one child. The programme will
also provide parents with necessary skills and values to
enhance their ability to nurture children. Parents will also be
given livelihood training to gain employment.

Pontiff creates new Cardinals
Pope Francis created nineteen new Cardinals on Saturday,
February 22. The newly created Cardinals received the
insignia of their o ce the red birea and the cardinals
ring in a streamlined ceremony conducted enrely in Lan.
Eighteen of the new Cardinals were present, while Cardinal
Loris Capovilla, the 98 year-old former secretary to Bl John
XXIII and Archbishop-emeritus of Chie-Vasto in Italy, was
created in absena.
A very special guest was on hand, as well: Pope Emeritus
Benedict XVI, whom Pope Francis had invited to share in
the occasion. We greet the Pope Emeritus, His Holiness
Benedict XVI, with equal aecon and veneraon and are
glad to have him among us These were the words which
the Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin addressed
to Joseph Ratzinger on his rst o cial public appearance
a year after his historic resignation from the pontificate.
Benedict XVI, rst among cardinals, sat in the front row.
When Pope Francis entered the Vacan Basilica, he went
to greet and embrace Benedict XVI. The Pope and the
Pope Emeritus embraced warmly and exchanged greengs
before the ceremony began. In his allocuon, Pope Francis
encouraged the whole College of Cardinals to recognise
their office as one of service and readiness for sacrifice.
The Church needs your courage, to proclaim the Gospel
at all mes, said Pope Francis, both in season and out of
season, and to bear witness to the truth. The Holy Father
went on to say, The Church needs your prayer for the
progress of Christs flock, reminding the Cardinals that
prayer, along with the proclamation of the Word, is the
primary task of the Bishop. Calling on the Cardinals to pray
especially for suering peoples, and to express with him
their spiritual closeness to the ecclesial communies and to
all Chrisans suering from discriminaon and persecuon,
he said, The Church needs us also to be peacemakers,
building peace by our words, our hopes and our prayers.
The next day, Pope Francis celebrated Mass with the new
Cardinals in St Peters Basilica. Thereaer, the Pope greeted
the crowds in St Peters Square gathered for the Angelus
prayer. In his address, he urged them to work for Chrisan
unity avoiding all divisions, because A community does not
belong to the preacher, but to Christ. Commenng on the
second Reading of the Day, the Pope said, Since the mes
described by St Paul, Chrisans were divided according to
whoever was leading their community. But St Paul Pope
Francis said explains that this way of thinking is wrong:
Everything belongs to you Christ! Not to Paul, Apollos or
Cephas; the world, life, death, the present and the future,
everything is yours! For you belong to Christ, and Christ
to God! And the Pope said all Chrisan communies are
born from this belonging: dioceses, parishes, associaons,
movements. And though there may be dierences he
added through Baptism we all have the same dignity,
we are children of God. Our dignity the Pope said is in
Jesus Christ. And those who have received the ministry to
guide, to preach, to administer the Sacraments, must not
feel that they own special powers, that they are masters.
They must put themselves in the service of the community,
helping it in its journey of holiness with joy.
The Church, said Pope Francis, entrusts the witness of
this pastoral lifestyle to the new Cardinals. Yesterdays
Consistory and todays Eucharisc Celebraon have oered
us a precious occasion to experience the Catholicity, the
Universality of the Church which is well represented by
the variegated origins of the members of the College of
Cardinals, who are gathered in ght communion around the
Successor of Peter.

he greeted the Italian religious. I could not have a greater
joy than that of celebrang my birthday with Pope Francis,
said Sr Candida. She who belongs to the Congregaon of the
Ministers of the Sick of Saint Camillus, said: In my 80 years
as a religious, I have never regretted having chosen this
vocaon. Only one who feels the happiness of being close
to the Lord can understand how abundant His love is for us
and how much peace He gives our heart, she added.
About the secret of such notable longevity, the nun who
has lived during the poncate of ten popes, said: To listen
to the voice of Christ and to be docile to His will. During my
whole life I have thought: where the Lord takes me, that is
the right place for me. Her favourite prayer: the holy rosary,
as well as another prayer she repeats during the day: Lord,
I adore you and I thank you for your love and mercy, a
simple prayer to memorise, rich in content. The Camillians
are a Religious Order dedicated to the care of the sick.
Those who know Sr Candida say she has always lived her
vocaon exemplarily, with coherence and lively simplicity,
giving witness of the message of charity of St Camillus to
the poor and the neediest.

Pope calls for peace in Ukraine
Towards the end of his weekly General Audience, Pope
Francis appealed for peace in Ukraine where violent clashes
between government forces and protesters continue
to ravage the capital, Kiev. Twenty-five demonstrators
were killed in what is considered the deadliest day of the
protests. President Viktor Yanukovych gained the ire of
many aer he backed out of a trade pact with the European
Union, choosing instead to steer the country towards closer
es with Russia.
Responding to the violence, the Holy Father said: I assure
my closeness to the Ukrainian people and pray for the
vicms of violence, for their families and for the wounded.
Concluding his appeal, Pope Francis called for all pares
involved in the conflict to end all acts of violence while
urging them to seek harmony and peace in the country.

Pope Francis: Do not be
afraid of Confession
Connuing his catechecal series on the Sacraments, Pope
Francis reected on the Sacrament of Reconciliaon, which
along with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick
from what he described the Sacraments of Healing. The
Sacraments of Penance and Reconciliaon [...] ow directly
from the Paschal Mystery, he told pilgrims aending his
weekly General Audience in St Peters Square.
In fact, the same evening of Easter, the Lord appeared
to the di sci pl es, cl osed i n the Cenacl e, and, after
addressing to them the greeng Peace be with you, He
breathed on them and said: Receive the Holy Spirit. If
you forgive anyones sins, their sins are forgiven. This
indication by Jesus, the Pope stressed, shows that the
forgiveness of our sins is not gained through any strength
of our own, rather it is a gi that springs from the heart of
Christ Crucied and Risen.
Deparng from his prepared statement, the Holy Father
spoke on the reservaons one might have to confessing
their sins to a priest. Someone may say: I confess only to
God. Yes, you can tell God: Forgive me, and say your sins,
he said. But our sins are also against the brothers, against
the Church, and for this it is necessary to ask forgiveness to
the Church and to the brothers, in the person of the priest.
The Holy Father also said that some may feel ashamed
of confessing their sins. However, he noted, feeling
shame for ones sins is good because it humbles us. Do
not be afraid of Confession! he exclaimed. One who is
in line to confess himself feels all these things even
shame but then, when he finishes confessing, he
leaves free, great, beautiful, forgiven, [...] happy. And this
is the beauty of Confession.
Concluding his catechesis, Pope Francis encouraged those
who have not confessed, whether it be for two weeks or
forty years, to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliaon as
soon as possible. Jesus is there, and Jesus is much beer
than the priests, and Jesus receives you. He receives
you with so much love. Be courageous, and go forward
to Confession, he said. To celebrate the Sacrament of
Reconciliaon means to be wrapped in a warm embrace.

Vatican stops US diocese
from closing landmark church
A long-shot appeal to the Vacan has given a small band of
parishioners in Bualo, NY, a chance to save their church as
a worship site, aer it had been closed by the local diocese.
The Jan 7 decree handed down from the Congregaon of
Clergy states that St Anns Church and Shrine, located on
Broadway Avenue in Bualo, cannot be sold or repurposed
for profane use.
The Bualo Diocese had closed St Anns as part of a parish

convent and school complex to a private developer for
secular uses, aer judging that an esmated $8-12 million
price tag to repair and restore it was something the diocese

THE
Great Pastors
Sir, I was sad to hear about the sad demise of Rev Fathers Peter
Drego and Leslie Miranda who rendered their valuable service
to the Church in Vasai, respecvely at St James Church, Agashi
and Holy Spirit Church, Nandakhal in the 60s. In those days,
Vasai lacked many civic amenies but the priests coming from
the city background adapted themselves to the local situaon,
mastered the Marathi language and even excelled in it. They
loved the people and the people too reciprocated. Some of
us priests cherish fond memories of Fr Leslie Miranda who
nurtured our vocaon to the priesthood.
Fr Leslie was an accomplished preacher even in Marathi. He
burnt the midnight oil in preparing and wring down every
word in excellent hand wring. He believed it the sancty of
the pulpit. What came from the heart sent ripples into the
hearts of the faithful. My dad appreciated his sermons and
repeated them to us at home.
May their souls rest in peace.

Catholics must live the
Eucharist in daily life
Sir, This refers to The Eucharist and Social Jusce by Fr Lancy
Pinto (The Examiner, Feb15-23). I fully agree that the Eucharist
indeed has intrinsic, communitarian and social ramicaons.
The communitarian aspect is brought out by the fact that
people come together to share in the one bread and one cup.
We are also called to live the Eucharist in our day-to-day life,
so that both our fellow Catholics and non Catholics will see
the dierence in the way we live our daily lives.
We must ensure that the Eucharisc sacrice we celebrate
ows though a concrete acon of love. This love should be
seen not as acts of charity and mercy, but more importantly as
love seen in acon. The Church is known for its charity through
the Community Fund, Bombay Archdiocesan Corpus Fund and
acts of charity through various cells like the SSVP and others.

Amendment to NDPS Act
Sir, Possibly the last good act by the 15
th
Lok Sabha was
passing the amendment to the draconian Narcoc Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS). While the exisng NDPS
Act banned the use of morphine and other recreaonal drugs,
it also severely restricted their use for medicinal purposes, thus
denying end-stage cancer paents with severe pain, relief from
their suering. Now, with this new amendment the restricons
on the growing and sale of opium (from which morphine is
processed) will ease considerably. Though India is one of the
largest producers of opium, the irony is that only 250 kgs of it
is processed into morphine out of the total requirement of
about 30,000 kgs for domesc use in pain management. Now
cancer, AIDS and other paents suering from excruciang
pain, can heave a sigh of relief as they will have easier access
to morphine which is the most e cient palliave medicine in
pain management. For the present, India will have to import
morphine (which is permied by the amendment) as we do
not have the rening capacity. The latest amendment will
provide nursing homes and hospices like Shan Avedna Sadan
with more and beer access to morphine and thereby, as
Dr L J Desouza the heart and soul behind Shan Avedna, so
beaufully puts it, add life to days (not days to life) of cancer
stricken paents.

the three pares as dierent Drivers, two of which are well

Sir, A wedding Mass which I recently attended caused
me write this leer. The photographer was clicking away

remember at St Pius X Church, Mulund, late Rev Fr Trevor

si ng down, Communion, signing of register and exit. It is
also sad to note that the Sanctuary is many a me converted

dierent ways. All this can be done outside the church and
if a photograph of the church interior is wanted, then this
can be done before of aer Mass. Could our churches have

St Francis Xavier
from Life to Death
Sir, The arcle Exposion of St Francis Xavier by Fr Cosme
Jose Costa (The Examiner dated Feb 22-28) focuses on the
authencity of the relics preserved in the Basilica at Old
Goa. The Encyclopedia Britannica, in spite of its massive
research facilies, has an entry, in which it states that one
of the surviving buildings in Old Goa is the Basilica of Bom
Jesus (1549-1603) in which lies the mummied body of St
Francis Xavier. The same encyclopedia (Micropaedia, Vol
8) refers to a mummy as a body embalmed or treated for
burial with preservaves aer the manner of the ancient
Egypans. This process involved the removing of internal
organs, treang the body with resin and wrapping it in linen
bandages. (Micropaedia, Vol 5). Dierent types of techniques
have been used in the course of me. The body of Lord
Nelson was brought from Trafalgar to England in a cask of
brandy. The body of Alexander the Great, was returned from
Babylon to Macedonia in a container of honey. Somemes,
the bodies were packed in a box with salt for three months
and they then transformed into mummies. With rare
excepons, the Chrisans rejected embalming and cremaon
since there was interference with the body. Later, arterial
injecon techniques were developed in the 18
th
century for
preservaon of bodies.
Studies indicate that St Francis Xavier died on December 3,
1552 on the Chinese island Sancian. He was ill since November
21, 1552. Who would diagnose the malady? He had a high
fever and was asked to rest on board the ship. But on account
of the strong waves he was taken to the island and rested in a
very modest hut of branches and mud lumps which had many
openings through which cold winds would blow. The situaon
was worsening day by day. There was no medical assistance,
material comforts, medicines or food. Antnio de Santa F was
his only companion. However, it must be menoned that in
spite of weakness and a high fever he bled twice and it aected
his health very badly.
Soon aer his death, he was put in a Chinese style wooden
co n covering his body with lots of lime so that the esh
would decompose quickly and it would be possible to carry his
bones when the ship was sailing to Malacca. Lime is an oxide
of calcium and it accelerates the process of decomposion.
According to some, this was done on the advice of the sailors
and according to the leer of Joo Eiro, it was done at the
request of the saint himself who desired that his bones should
be taken to Goa.

Carmeline Caridade Alphonso
W/o late John Caridade Alphonso (ex.C.Rly)
Born: 09-07-1930
Died: 05-03-2013
A bouquet of beautiful memories,
Sprayed with a million tears,
Wishing God could have spared you,
If just for a few more years.
It does not take a special day,
For us to think of you.
Each Mass we hear, each prayer we say,
Is ofered up to you.
We cannot bring the old days back,
When we were all together,
But each time we look at your picture,
You seem to smile and say,
Dont be sad but courage take,
And love each other for my own sake.
Her children - Vincy, Edward,
Nataline & Valentina
DIL Carmel, SIL Jayesh & Leyland
Grandchildren - Apekshit, Laurelle,
Ian, Liam & Krisel

We thought of you with love today,
But that is nothing new.
We thought of you yesterday.
And days before that too.
We think of you in silence.
We ofen speak your name.
All we have is memories.
And your picture in a frame.
Your memory is our keepsake.
With which well never part.
God has you in his keeping.
We have you in our heart.

Whispering softly
