Describe what standard precautions to take to prevent disease transmission when providing care. Use protective equipment that protects the eyes, mouth and hands. Wear disposable gloves, breathing barriers, masks and protective eyewear. 2. Explain the procedure for conducting a primary assessment. Activate the facilitys EAP (or whistle), signal for EMS assistance, yell for a backboard and then retrieve the victim. While assessing an unconscious victim; check his or her pulse by placing your finger around the side of the neck. Look at his or her stomach for signs of breathing while you as the lifeguard, place ear close to victims mouth to hear if the victim is breathing all within ten seconds. 3. Explain the procedure for conducting a secondary assessment. How does this assessment differ between adults and children? A secondary assessment is only conducted when the initial assessment is completed and there is no signs of life-threating conditions. The secondary assessment consists of a head to toe examination for adults or a toe to head examination for a child. When assessing a child, first receive consent from guardians, then ask if the child feels pain or discomfort, allergies, if he or she is taking medications or has medical conditions, past medical history, last oral intake and events leading up to the incident. As for the adult, check his or her head for any bruises, skin appearance and temperature, ask the victim to move his or her neck side-to-side to check for discomfort or the inability to move, ask the victim to shrug his or her shoulders, check his or her chest and abdomen to while the victim is taking a deep breath (listen for difficulties in breathing and ask the victim if they have pain while breathing), check the victims arm and legs while checking for unusual conditions. As for the child; start from toe to head, so the child can become familiar with the process and see what is happening. 4. Identify victim conditions that indicate the need to summon emergency medical services personnel. Victim remains unconscious or disoriented, breathing problems, chest discomfort, no pulse, severe bleeding, Persistent abdominal pain or pressure, suspected head, neck or back injuries severe allergic reactions, stroke, seizures that last more than 5 minutes or cause injury repeated seizures, seizures involving a victim who is pregnant, diabetic or who does not regain consciousness, vomiting blood or passing blood, severe burns, suspected broken bones suspected poisoning, sudden severe headache 5.
