Cr. Allan Comrie is a bus driver with Bacchus Marsh Coaches and the local business announced last week a significant deal with the State government to improve the local bus services over the next two years. Photo Helen Tatchell By Kate Taylor In a coup for Bacchus Marsh, more local jobs and better bus services are set to be provided by Bacchus Marsh Coaches thanks to a deal with Public Transport Victoria. General Manager of the bus service Dave Nickels spoke at the launch of the Harvest Festival last week, for which Bacchus Marsh Coaches is providing services. He said that the deal will see an increase in local bus services over the next two years with an additional depot being open for 80 additional coaches which will need local drivers. We will have one bus going to meet every train, buses running every 30 minutes. The town needs a better bus service, he told the crowd. Mr Nickels said the company ew the Transport Minister over the region, adding that Bacchus Marsh and Warrnambool are the only two regional towns to gain bus service increases in the twoyear deal. Bacchus Marsh Coaches was established in 1989 as part of the Donric group of companies and provides local school bus, charter, and tour services as well as operating government contracts to meet V/Line train services. Moorabool Shire Council CEO Rob Croxford said the deal has been a while in the making. Councils been negotiating over many months with PTV (Public Transport Victoria) and the local service provider, and we have put forward a number of proposals to them (PTV) over that period with the aim to lobby for new and more direct bus routes with better coverage of the Bacchus Marsh population and integration with the rail network. When PTV have concluded their preparations and can formally announce the nal routes and schedule of service, were condent of a much better outcome overall for our local residents and businesses.

A legendary son of the scrays

HES BEEN called it a lot during his lifetime on and off the footy eld, but now Doug Hawkins is ofcially a legend. On March 12, Hawkins was elevated to Legend status at a Western Bulldogs Football Club function at Crown Casino, becoming only the fourth club player to reach this level along with EJ Whitten, Charlie Sutton and John Schultz. The Bacchus Marsh resident said he was very humbled and surprised to be put in that bracket. Theres a lot of great champions and a lot of outstanding individuals to come out of that club, Mr Hawkins said. As Bruce (McAvaney) would say, it was pretty special. Individually it is one of the highlights of my career, but footy is really about teams. Individually, to be named a legend is right up there with breaking Teddy Whittens record for most club games. He played 329 games for Footscray, was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 2004, was named vicecaptain and put on the wing of the Footscray-Western Bulldogs Team of the Century and was inducted into the Footscray-Western Bulldogs Hall of Fame in 2010. Mr Hawkins said the greatest moment of his football career happened at Bacchus Marsh and not at Footscray, when he coached the under-16 football team to a championship in the wake of the tragic death of their teammate Nathan Prince. To watch those boys go out two weeks later and win the grand nal after everything that happened was the greatest moment in my footy career, he said. He predicted that the bi-annual legend award would next go to a player from yesteryear such as Gary Dempsey, Norman Ware and Allan Hopkins, but said it could easily be awarded to other players from his time including Kelvin Templeton, Chris Grant, Brad Johnson or Scott West. I told my kids for years I was a legend and now they cant argue with me anymore.

CLINTON Rodda has been reappointed as managing director for Southern Rural Water for another ve years. Board of Southern Rural Water chairperson Terry Burgi said the board was delighted that Mr Rodda agreed to lead the rural water corporation for a further ve years. We believe his leadership has transformed Southern Rural Water into a modern, customer focused business, Mr Burgi said. Southern Rural Water is facing a number of challenges, including continuing to modernise its irrigation districts, making more water available for production across southern Victoria, and completing a

long-running program of dam safety upgrades. We believe that Clinton is the ideal person to lead Southern Rural Water during these challenges. Mr Rodda said he was excited about the future of Southern Rural Water and its customers. We have been looking hard at the long-term future of our customers, particularly around Asian markets, he said. We are keen to add value to their businesses and to regional economies, whilst sensibly protecting the environment and water sources. I believe that a well-managed, exible rural water supply is going to become critical to Victorias economy.

mand indigenous health equality. Rates of infant mortality, maternal health problems and smoking have dropped since the investment and partnership in these programs began. Ms Cooper said there would be a petition calling for indigenous health equality to sign on the day

The word on roads package

By Kate Taylor A package of roadworks for Bacchus Marsh proposed by the State Government could move forward plans to build public toilets at Rupert Moon Reserve. Works such as building on/ off ramps on the Western Highway at Halletts Way, and a major upgrade of Woolpack Road, are aimed at improving road safety and trafc ow in the town. But the proposed package does not include a previously considered road being built through Rupert Moon Reserve an option which until now, has delayed plans to build public toilets at the reserve. East Ward Councillor David Edwards recently passed a motion through council to have the public toilets project progressed, and said that these proposed trafc works could see that process speeded up again. Cr Edwards said he supports the proposed trafc package. Twelve months ago there was a real possibility that no works would be delivered. The Mayor and all of Council has worked relentlessly to achieve good outcomes for our community. I applaud the State Government for making a decision and believe the package of works provided will improve safety and ease trafc congestion at a number of key locations. It is now time for council to consider how we can take advantage of this package of works, what projects can we bring forward, such as the Halletts Way extension that will maximise the benets of this announcement. I look forward to continuing to work with both State and Federal governments to deliver works that will benet our community. Fellow East Ward Councillor Tonia Dudzik also supports the package. The package of works announced recently by Minister Mulder contains a range of improvements that are essential to improve road and pedestrian safety. All elements of this package are needed. I commend the Minister for listening to community

feedback. This package will not involve the destruction of ancient protected river red gums. It will not cause environmental destruction of our river and Moon Reserve. It also will not involve the removal of Avenue of Honour Trees. This is a compromise and a way forward for roads in Bacchus Marsh. I sincerely thank the State Government and Minister Mulder for this infrastructure package and taking into account community concerns. East Ward Councillor Allan Comrie also supports the proposed roadworks package, especially for the improvements it offers Halletts Way. I think its very good - itll be great to see Woolpack Road upgraded for the trucks because its a dangerous road anyway, so I think its a great initiative. I think the public have been screaming for it for a long time - its something we just need to get on and do. Cr Comrie also said that the package should allow for the public toilets at Rupert Moon Reserve to be built quickly. I hope as soon as possible we can get those done because weve got the money to do it in the budget, all we have to do is get water there and council ofcers are working on the planning for that now. A lot of people walk there and theres no toilets for them. East Ward Councillor John Spain said he also approves of the package and hopes that it will mean public toilets will soon be built at Rupert Moon Reserve but said there is still work to do.

I think its mainly a good thing, but we still do need to work out the timing of it and when it is going to start. Its a good solution to a big part of the problem, the ramps on Halletts Way will give that whole project a kick along as well as changing the dynamics of some of the transport issues around Bacchus Marsh. Itll be up to us councillors to work out how were going to tie in the rest of the Halletts Way project and get that cracking along as well. VicRoads taking over management of Woolpack Road I think thats a real plus for the ratepayers anyway because thats a burden, were talking tens of millions of dollars or an enduring cost in the future thats being taken over by VicRoads. We realise theres still a lot of work to do to plan and gure out the North-South route for the trucks because thats the bit thats left over, but well just keep plugging away at that. Local Bacchus Marsh CBD business owner Malcolm Trask said the package has positives, negatives and potential future positives. The upshot is its a good start, but the core issues concerning the trafc problems are not resolved by the announcements weve still got no truck bypass, weve got no trafc relief from the centre of town, and more importantly is we dont have any removal of the trucks from the Avenue of Honour which are causing massive damage to those trees. And with the upgrade of Woolpack Road, thats only set to worsen. But Mr Trask pointed out

that upgrading Woolpack Road now could leave the door open for the road to be extended to the Avenue in the future. We do believe it does open up the possibility of it being done later on, which is a good thing. Theres good things in this package, like the ramps for Halletts Way and the fact that theyve abandoned the alternative of building the permanent Eastern interchange which has saved the river redgums we save the oldest living things in the valley and that is really gratifying. But the issues certainly not resolved. And the fact is the doors are not closed on being able to extend across to the freeway later on. Belinda Delios, an Avenue business owner who helped lobby for years for improved trafc ow in Bacchus Marsh, said the roadworks package is a good start. I think what VicRoads have done is theyve tried to please everybody and for that I congratulate them. However she explained that now, council needs to look at solving the problem of truck trafc in the town with new ideas not by recycling the old ones. I think that what council needs to push is to get these trucks that dont belong in Bacchus Marsh completely out of the town. Ms Delios said that instead of focusing on removing the current truck trafc from the town, council should be following the lead of Footscray, Yarraville and Newport in diverting trucks away from the town before they even reach it. She said that some trucks do belong in Bacchus Marsh, for transport for local farmers etc, however additional truck trafc from surrounding areas should be kept out in the rst place, before they add to trafc in Bacchus Marsh. Why would we continue to push for a solution for trucks in our town and not just keep them out of our town? Footscray, Yarraville and Newport are trying to get trucks out, why would Bacchus Marsh be inviting them into our town? Why are we creating truck bypasses in our town?

Just maintaining what we have is not enough, we also need to be constructing new assets. Moorabool Shire Council CEO - Rob Croxford With the attention at a federal level turning towards the 2014/15 budget and statements by Prime Minister Abbot that the nancial state of Australia needs to be addressed now to provide for a sustainable future, I thought it timely to start a conversation at your local council level. The Victorian Auditor General rates Moorabool Shire Council as sustainable with a yellow trafc light score. Whilst this is comforting on a state wide level it does not address the longer term risks locally as we head to 2014. It is essential that we as a council and broader community focus on renewing the assets we already have

tight, so we also need to look internally and the levels of rating we impose on households, the level of debt and risk we are comfortable with and also what services we will provide to communities in the future. This aspect is called the core business review. Core business is about checking the service levels provided, the net costs to council and checking if other providers in the marketplace are better able to deliver the service. We welcome feedback from the community on services you value and whether we are doing a good job in delivery. The Council also uses a continuous improvement process called business excellence that ensures we are constantly checking our performance and seeking better ways to do things. So, lets keep the conversation going, your comments on what services council should or shouldnt provide, levels of service and your views of the future are greatly appreciated. Talk to your local councillor, visit our website www. haveyoursay.vic.gov.au or write or email us.

The world of comic heroes in art

BALLAN Caravan Park caretaker Dean Dingo Northey (pictured) will show another side of himself at the Ballan Autumn Festival this Sunday. The talented artist will hold his rst ever exhibition of action heroes and comicbook worthy characters. The 40-year-old said he had drawn all his life and could draw anything except horses and faces. Movies and books inspire me, Mr Northey said. Ive always collected comics, but now I only get the good collectors editions. He said his favourite character was Spawn and his idols were Spawn creator Tod McFarlane and famous Australian painter Tom Roberts. I also like Stan Lee who came up with the idea of Spiderman, Captain America and other Marvel superheroes, he said. It takes me anywhere between 24 to 38 hours to do a piece. I use pencils, textas, artliners and pretty much whatever I have. Mr Northey will have up to nine pieces in his rst exhibition and theyll all be for sale. He said he was asked to display his work by local artist Lou Callow. The exhibition will be on display at the Ballan Mechanics Hall during the Ballan Autumn Festival on Sunday, March 23.

Noise testing group forms

A NEW group has formed to lobby for independent noise testing at the Lal Lal Wind Energy Facility. Spokesperson for the Lal Lal Environment Protection Association, John McMahon, said although there were high numbers of noise complaints for existing wind facilities for some years, no independent body had been tasked with monitoring noise levels around such projects. The Victorian Environment Protection Authority routinely monitors noise levels near factories and night clubs, yet has not been authorised to monitor noise around wind facilities, Mr McMahon said. If I was running a small factory with regular noise level breeches, the EPA would be all over me. I would be quickly shut down if I couldnt x my problem. Yet large wind projects covering thousands of hectares operate in more or less a voluntary regulation framework. This is why we have called ourselves the Lal Lal Environment Protection Association. Premier Napthine and Minister Guy were proactive earlier in establishing setbacks for wind turbines from homes in new wind projects. However, they should now follow this up with action to empower the Victorian EPA to control wind facility noise. Anything less would be grossly irresponsible neighbours. for

near

He said the planned Lal Lal Wind Energy Facility planning permit allowed for the construction of 64 turbines near Yendon and Elaine, just east of Ballarat. The Lal Lal Environment Protection Association has mapped proposed turbine locations versus neighbouring homes, and has estimated that 210 people live within 2kms and 2,005 people within 5 kms of turbines, Mr McMahon said. Should this project go ahead as planned, with so many turbines so close to so many homes and no independent noise police, the outcry will be enormous.

Arboretum plans to branch out

Ballans newest community group will host a stall at the Ballan Autumn Festival to seek support for a novel idea a proposal that Ballan become Australias rst town-wide arboretum. Arboretums, literally areas planted with trees for popular interest or research purposes, are normally found in botanic gardens or national parks. Two of Australias better known examples are the RJ Hamer Arboretum in Olinda with its forests-in-miniature and the National Arboretum in Canberra, which is planted with trees that are on the UN red list. The advocates of the proposed Ballan Arboretum believe the concept will give the community a real opportunity to inuence new tree plantings. Were looking ahead, which is vital really if we want to approach our towns future landscape with care and love. Some wonderful work has been done in the past. Just look at the original plantings that brought us Ballans magnicent deciduous trees. And look at all the work that went into designing and installing Ballans autumnthemed entrance signage. We need to build on that, said Stephie Day, an Arboretum member. The arboretum concept is visionary, practical and

inclusive. On a pragmatic level, the group believes the arboretum framework will attract money to support planting new trees. In terms of the visionary and inclusive nature of the idea, a town-wide arboretum could have broad community benets. Tor Roxburgh, also an Arboretum member, said as a community they could revitalise particular streetscapes. The beauty of Ballan becoming an arboretum is that the idea is big enough

to support diverse tastes and passions, but sufciently contained to allow us to pay attention to key plantings. The group is keen to develop the arboretum concept in partnership with the community and Council. During the Ballan Autumn Festival, the Ballan Arboretum stall will be hosted within the Omnibus Art Gallery site. For further information, please email Stephie Day stephanieday@bigppond. com

Need to change current model for reserves

AN ADVERTISEMENT which claimed the Moorabool Shire Council wanted to sack committees of management at four East Moorabool Ward reserves has been labelled misleading. The advertisement (page 5, March 4, Moorabool News) called for anyone involved with Darley Park, Masons Lane, Maddingley Park and the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse Recreational Reserve to come to a community meeting at Darley Park and have their say on how their reserves should be managed. Moorabool Shire mayor Paul Tatchell attended the meeting on March 12 and said it was misleading that councillors were working against committees of management in the East Moorabool Ward. We are working with you. Nobody runs these reserves better than the people in it. However, we have three grounds that dont have a chairperson and therefore we cant get government funding for your reserves under a dysfunctional Section 86, Cr Tatchell said. He said reserve committees needed to nd a way of communicating with council ofcers. You need to take control of your own destiny. Its not working at the moment because you dont have a chair. Meeting organiser Anne Wilson said she placed the ad because she was notied that council was proposing a resolution to abolish the Section 86 committees of management and it alerted her that something was broken. Regional general manager for AFL Goldelds Rod Ward said he also felt the advertisement was horribly misleading. I deal with reserves across 14 different councils and I can see what works well and what doesnt, Mr Ward said, stating these were his personal views and not those of the AFL Goldelds. The current Moorabool Shire model of one-size-ts-all Section 86 doesnt meet the needs of the Bacchus Marsh community today and, as it continues to grow, wont meet their needs in the future. Sporting grounds around Bacchus Marsh are experiencing double or triple the use that they did ve years ago. He proposed that Moorabool Shire Council consider a hybrid model including Section 86. Section 86 works well in smaller places like Ballan, Gor-

don and Bungaree. The hybrid model works in Hepburn, Melton and Ballarat, he said. This is about maintenance. Our volunteers arent experts in this. Let volunteers do what they do best. The population has exploded and we are not keeping up with it and not keeping up with the infrastructure. I speak in favour of an advisory committee who could work with council to plan for the needs of the future. At the moment Moorabool Shire is well behind and our recreational facilities are well behind where they need to be to cater for future needs. I coach a junior cricket side and we have to have our home games at Ballarat and Korweinguboora. The AFL recommends a maximum of seven football teams playing on one oval. Darley and Bacchus Marsh each have 12, plus Darley has Auskick. Theres an immediate need for additional ovals, Mr Ward said. Theres so much evidence the current model is not working and I think Moorabool Shire Council needs to come up with a new and improved structure to do with strategic planning and maintenance of existing facilities.

Sonia Smith believes the west of Moorabool has been waiting for a secondary school option since 1971. Ms Smith made the announcement last Monday with Mayor Paul Tatchell for a Technical/TAFE school. Photo Helen Tatchell

Lets get technical

THE WESTERN HALF OF MOORABOOL could be about to get a Technical/TAFE school and its been waiting since 1971. The school would create 50 ongoing jobs in Ballan, plus further jobs during construction and nearby road upgrades. Candidate for the new State seat of Buninyong Sonia Smith made the exclusive announcement last Monday with Moorabool Mayor Paul Tatchell. Ms Smith will formally launch the Nationals commitment to an operational Technical school by 2020 at the Ballan Autumn Festival on Sunday March 23. It is incredible that this growing area has no secondary type school and that locals have been waiting for action for more than 40 years, the Navigators-based lawyer said. I salute the generations of local families who have spent countless hours on buses to get to school. Now its time to do something for our children and grandchildren. Cr Tatchell said education is a strong performer in terms of economic growth in the region. The gures are saying that too many of our young people are falling through the cracks for want of an alternative to mainstream education. A secondary school with a technological genre would ll the gap and provide a path towards solving our youth unemployment issues in the region, he said.

She correctly describes how this early evolutionary part protects us from danger/fear by preparing us for ght, ee or freeze actions. Unfortunately, she continues to use this facility of our mind to argue scientic evidence for global warming fears. She should have engaged her more recently evolved Sapiens part (Cerebral Cortex) of her brain after all we have developed to become known as HOMO SAPIENS species [Wisest of all the wise creatures]. This gives us the ability to plan, count, read, evaluate data and use objectively derived evidence to determine our decisions and actions, and many other skills. I opine that if this was the case she would hesitate before making her most fearful conclusions, because; 1. The world has stopped warming for over 17 years now (RSS satellite measurements) despite climate models telling us that we should have been warming at 0.2C/decade in this period. 2. Environmental Opinion
tries to explain the various graphs on things economical, I subside into a passive state and only snap out of this state when the weather comes on. Impetus - In a recent edition of Eureka Street (Vol 24 No 4) David James, a business journalist who edits Personal Super Investor had this to say: When the Government refused to spend $25 million on SPC Ardmona or help Qantas with debt guarantees, this was presented as a disciplined refusal to distort the price mechanism. Yet negatively geared properties last year cost the Australian taxpayer over $13 billion. Surely that amounts to a pretty decent interference in the price mechanism. Housing construction is a major part of our industry base. Australia has one of the most inated property markets in the world, precisely because of those distortions in the price mechanism. And as 80% of Queensland is in serious drought and parts of WA have had little if any rain over the past few months and here in Tasmania they are talking of the driest months on record, the Federal Government talks economy. Why? The link is well explained by the response to this article of David James by Len Puglisi also on the same Eureka Street where Len has this to say. Response - Rupert Murdoch argued in speeches here last year that the market is not only the most efcient but the most moral of systems. Thats the Governments economic driver - one branch of its condent ethos. There will be stops and starts in implementing this Murdoch dictum as compromises even within its own Cabinet will occur, but they cant ignore him - and it seems now, dont want to - because his media outlets are backing the Government strongly. But allied to this awed moral position is another, articulated by Cardinal Pell a few years back. It is that environmentalists preference nature against humans. So once again, with stops and starts, the Government is winding back on nature protections. These two seri-

The economy and the environment

I am aware I have no right to speak on the economy, as this opinion piece is all to do with environmental concerns, and to step from this and deviate a little into the sacrosanct area of the economy could get me in trouble. However, as I have not had any critical Letters to the Editor for a long time; not at least since I last wrote on the need to support wind farms; I will do the unthinkable and link the economy with the environment and then add a little from the United Nations. However, as an impetus to my thinking I will rely on someone who has a little more expertise in the economy than I have. I am not sure about you, but when the ABC 7.00pm news ous errors - pro-market and anti-nature - are the moral/ spiritual positions behind the Governments selfjusticatory agendas, and need to be exposed before they do much more damage to all life on Earth. I dont wish to add to this comment as I think it stands on its own and well links into the short paragraph on things economical. I look forward to seeing some letters to the editor. **** Last week at the launch of the International Year of Small Island Developing States, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stated: In 2011, I travelled to Kiribati, where I met a boy who told me he fears being ooded by seawater when he falls asleep at night. Climate change represents a grave threat to the survival and viability of a number of low-lying nations. These countries... have responded with strong leadership and decisive action. I have brought their call for global environmental stewardship to ofcials at the United Nations and in capitals around the world. I will continue to do so. We need action and ambition to address the climate challenge. What is your opinion? Next MEG meeting: Tuesday 27 March - Ballan Community House 134 Inglis St Ballan. All Welcome

Investing in regional Victoria

December 2013, the median price of a one-bedroom unit in regional Victoria a property type favoured by many investors for buying to let showed an average annual capital growth of 4.1 per cent over this period. For two-bedroom units the gure was 3 per cent and 2.1 per cent for a threebedroom unit. The average annual capital growth since 2008 for a twobedroom house was 3.7 per cent. For a three-bedroom house it was 3.5 per cent and for a four-bedroom house it was 3.6 per cent. Our latest rental data was also good news for investors with the vacancy rate in regional Victoria tightening slightly to 2.6 per cent in February, down from 2.7 per cent in January. This reected vacancy falls in most regions, except for the Shepparton and Goulburn region which rose 0.8 per cent, and the Ballarat region. The vacancy rate across the Ballarat area rose 2.2 per cent in February, after being the tightest major rental market in regional Victoria over the previous two months. Median house rents across regional Victoria remained stable in February at $300 a week, while the median rent for units fell by 4.0 per cent over the month to $240 a week. While this data shows that house rents did not rise in comparison to the previous month, and unit rentals fell, a short term dip in rental medians also needs to be considered over a longer period. For instance, house rentals rose two per cent (or $6 a week) in the previous month alone. What matters most is a propertys longterm performance, both as an income stream and a source of capital gain. If you would like more rental data see www.reiv. com.au/en/Property-Research/Rental-Data and if you are looking for a house or unit to rent or buy see the link on our homepage at www.reiv.com.au

auctions, around 3,500 homes will have sold under the hammer so far this year. We have had a big rise in the number of homes being sold by auction this year which continued on from the strength in the second half of last year. Having said that, total transactions are tracking lower than this time last year with a notable decrease in private sales. This indicates that while the premium end of the market is doing well, the more affordable and more substantial private sale market is showing signs of a slowdown. Next weekend the REIV expects around 1,110 auctions. CEO - REIV Enzo Raimondo

Investing in property is often seen as a positive move, which can yield good returns. Generally, these returns are achieved over the midto-long term, with a range of factors causing property to vary in value. And while the local economy or changes in employment levels can cause prices to increase or moderate, over time these changes are smoothed by longer-term trends. This has been shown in new REIV data which has found that, across regional Victoria, both homes and units have shown solid capital growth over the past ve years. The data showed that, as at

CAR RV memory TRUCKisTYRES How much enough? The more RAM the better performance. It pays to have SPECIALIST BALANCING as much RAM as your computer can cope with. All computers ship with a specied amount of RAM, and most BATTERIES & ALIGNMENT mother boards have extra capacity to install additional
RAM. Even new computers can take extra RAM

Your computer uses Random Access Memory (RAM) to hold program code and process instructions that you give your software when computing. When you turn your computer off, RAM loses the data that was used during the computing session. When you restart your computer the data from the operating system and the programs you start is once again loaded into the computers RAM. (Although modern RAM still retains small portions of data as either dynamic DRAM or static SDRAM.)

Victorian State Team Representative

Pentland Calisthenics Young Jasmine is eight years old and a member of the Sub Junior team and has been attending classes since she was three. Last November she auditioned for a place on the 2014 Victorian State Sub Junior Team and was successful. Every Wednesday Jasmine attends classes locally with her 18 team mates before making the solo trip to Melbourne every Sunday with the State team. Jasmine is preparing for the National Titles in July and President of the Pentland Calisthenics College Gayle Stewart said everyone is extremely proud. Being a member of the Victorian State Team is a wonderful experience for all the girls who take part. They will perform in Hamer Hall in July and we wish all the team every success, she said.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

The club held their nal track & eld program on Saturday, prior to the Centre Championships to be held this Saturday at Masons Lane. William Lalor broke the Under 9 Shot Put record with a new distance of 8.30 metres. The Under 16s athletes enjoyed their muck-up day and entertained both athletes and parents in their nal meet at BMLAC. Athletes need to arrive for Championship Day on Saturday 22 March by 8.15am, and must be in full centre uniform which includes Club polo shirt, plain black shorts and name tag. Championship Day is a full day program with events to conclude at approximately 2.30pm followed by Centre presentations. Clubs will then disperse for their own Club presentations.

Avenue Bowling Club

After battling a long season, Avenue were ableto have two Divisions playing ingrand nals of the BDBD weekend competition with both teams playing at the same venue on Grand Final day. Division 5 were up against City Oval, which were on top of the ladder for the majority of the season and which beat Avenue by some 46 shots just two weeks ago in the rst nal. Notwithstanding the size of this defeat, Avenue went into the game condent it could do well against the premiership favourites. Kevin Kneebones rink was down by 10 shots after 10 ends, whilst Dave McKendricks rink was down by nine shots after 19 ends, yet both fought back in the latter part of the game to each go down by ve shots. Peter Thistlethwaites rink battled hard all day, just keeping ahead of their rivals. Despite losing two of the last three ends, they were able to score one shot on the last end to win by two shots in what was a pretty even contest all day. Unfortunately Lyn Robinsons rink, which has maintained a good win/loss record for the season, found the going particularly tough ultimately losing by 20 shots against a strong opposition. Final score - Avenue 81 lost City Oval 109 Division 9 faced Ballan in the other nal. With each side winning one game against the other for the season, and the fact that Avenue only lost by ve shots two weeks ago, it was reasonably expected that it would be a close game. Unfortunately for Avenue it didnt turn out that way. Despite Oscar Mauffs rink winning by 10 shots, Avenues other two rinks went down by a collective 34 shots to hand Ballan the ag. It must be recognised that Avenue had a number of members playing their rst year and/or grand nal and it was a great effort for the side to get as far as they did. These players will be better off for the game and to take nothing away from Ballan who performed well on the day, the experience will do wonders for the team. Final score - Avenue 54 lost Ballan 78 The club had three of their four divisions make the preliminary nals with two making the Grand Final.
