Library hosting Big Play Date event
By L. HABER
The Sun
For the first time, the M. Allan Vo-
gelson Regional Branch of the
Voorhees Library, located at 203 Lau-
rel Road, is hosting the Big Play Date
event. The event is set to take place
on March 29, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Its going to be amazing, Emily
Moore, head of Youth Services at the
library, said.
Moore listed two key goals of the
Big Play Date. The first is to show
people that a lot of fun can happen at
the library, even on a Saturday. The
second objective is for caretakers
and parents to leave with a plethora
of inexpensive ideas and ways to en-
courage fun and development, for
children ages 1 to 3.
You dont have to have all the lat-
est educational toys to encourage de-
velopment in your child. I cant think
of a better way to spend a morning,
having meaningful fun with your
child and connecting with your com-
munity at the library, Moore said.
The library will have five stations
set up with activities that appeal to
the different senses, where children
and caregivers can play. Activities
planned include smelling stations,
color sorting and tactile experiences,
such as texture balloons and pools of
shredded paper.
Moore mentioned being most ex-
cited to debut the shredded paper
station, which will be like a swim-
ming pool of paper for children to be,
crunching and throwing and hav-
ing fun.
Parents and other caregivers will
not only get to see children engaged
in different activities using simple,
inexpensive materials such as card-
board boxes, cereal boxes, cracker
boxes and paper rolls commonly
found at home; there will also be edu-
cational resources available for the
adults in attendance.
The Childrens Hospital of
Philadelphia is sending injury pre-
vention specialist Tracey Hewitt to
the play date to discuss how to keep
children active but safe during play-
time.
Hewitt will be bringing a range of
car seats, which will be used to
demonstrate proper car safety.
Shes prepared to be as helpful as
possible, Moore said.
ShopRite Market of Lawnside is
sending registered dietician Jessica
Molinaro to the play date. Molinaro
will offer advice on healthy snacking
and eating. ShopRite will provide
free, healthy snacks for kids at the
event.
Moore mentioned applesauce,
Sammie Jammies and other fun
snacks.
Its a play date, but there are
some real lessons to learn, Moore
said.
Moore and other staff members
will be handing out information
cards to each adult guest. The infor-
mation cards will act as detailed
event guides.
L. HABER/The Sun
Voorhees Library staff members Christen Orbanus and Emily Moore prepare props on March 12 for
one of the librarys biggest upcoming events. The library is staging its biggest play date ever, on
Saturday, March 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Big Play Date will have a myriad of play stations
for children, as well as multiple story and snack times. A Shoprite nutritionist and child safety
representative from the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia will be on staff to perform demonstra-
tions, and answer any and all questions from parents and caregivers.

The Sun
With the harsh weather and
other factors preoccupying the
minds of busy Voorhees residents
this winter, it was easy to forget
that the Animal Welfare Associa-
tion has been working hard to
plan a lot of fun events for spring.
The major upcoming event is
the Paws and Feet 5K Race and
Doggie Fun Day, scheduled for
May 17 at Cooper River Park. This
year will mark the events 17th
anniversary.
The major sponsors for the
event are the Shreiber Animal
Foundation Enterprise, and J and
J Snack Foods.
Its a collective effort we try
to do fun things for people and
their pets, Maria Clarke, the
AWA events and business rela-
tions manager, said.
The cost for individual racers
or walkers is a donation of at
least $40. Teams of at least four to
25 people are expected to raise no
less than $500.
With more than 1,000 partici-
pants last year, the AWA is hoping
for even more to attend this year,
all to raise money and awareness
for shelter animals.
We have challenged the com-
munity to help us raise over
$100,000 this year, Clarke said.
According to Clarke, she and
other AWA staff members and
volunteers are planning some
huge surprises!
Some popular events at the
race are already no secret, includ-
ing a super fetch area and ca-
nine Candyland.
An area flyball group will be
in attendance to expose dog own-
ers to the doggie team sport. Fly-
ball involves pooches racing,
jumping over hurdles, and catch-
ing and retrieving tennis balls.
Police dogs and a high-flying
disk-fetching group known as the
Jersey Disk Devils will perform
during the day.

April 1 will mark the end of an era in
Voorhees Town Hall as our municipal
clerk, Jeanette Schelberg, retires after
serving our community tirelessly and pas-
sionately for a quarter of a century.
Jeanettes service to Voorhees started in
1988 when she became the planning board
secretary. In 1994, she was promoted to
deputy clerk, and in 1996 she became our
municipal clerk.
Jeanettes organizational skills and
work ethic led our clerks office to operate
efficiently, professionally and compassion-
ately. Among her many accomplishments,
Jeanette implemented the DOC STAR sys-
tem, allowing valuable records to be man-
aged and permanently preserved.
Jeanette was persistent in pursuing ad-
ditional consumption liquor licenses for
Voorhees through the state, creating signif-
icant revenue for our community. More re-
cently, she helped in the creation and de-
sign of the townships updated website and
Facebook page.
Jeanette has al-
ways been willing
to share her vast
knowledge and ex-
perience with
other departments
within town hall, to
help our local gov-
ernment better
serve our resi-
dents.
While most peo-
ple know Jeanette
Schelberg the
clerk, few people
know Jeanette
Schelberg the
woman. She grew
up in Somerdale
where she attend-
ed Sacred Heart School, and then the
Cathedral Academy. Upon graduation from
high school, she spent time in Cuero,
Texas, before joining the Navy at the age of
18.
She attended basic training at Bain-
bridge, Md., followed by data processing
school in California. Jeanette first served
our country as a data processor for the Bu-
reau of Naval Personnel in Washington
D.C. She was then transferred to the Naval
Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida, and
was honorably discharged from the Navy
in 1971.
While stationed in Jacksonville,
Jeanette met the love of her life, Rick, to
whom she has been married for 42 years.
She attended Miami Dade Community Col-
lege and attained an associate in arts de-
gree in 1977.
Jeanette then attended Florida Interna-
tional University before moving back to
New Jersey, where she attended nursing
school in Camden. Fortunately for
Voorhees, it was during nursing school
that Jeanette decided her calling was work-
Longtime municipal clerk Schelberg to retire

T
hursday. It cant come soon
enough. Officially, thats the
start of spring. Whether Moth-
er Nature agrees, though, is anyones
guess at this point. Early forecasts
show that she will be good to us, but
how much can we actually rely on
forecasts?
Spring is what we all need. We need
a nice stroll downtown, in the park or
on the beach to reinvigorate us, to get
us out of the doldrum into which win-
ter plunged us. Winter this year has
not just affected all of our moods, it
has affected our bottom lines, too.
Well all most likely be paying more
in taxes, in some way, at some level, for
the extensive snow removal, pothole
repairs and salt purchases.
Snow has affected local businesses
as well, especially retail shops. Bad
weather kept patrons inside from what
seemed like October through now. The
arrival of spring will hopefully turn
that around, and quickly.
Snow kept our schoolchildren at
home which, at the time, they loved
but it will also keep them in school
much longer into the summer. Who
knows how that will affect summer
travel plans? It looks like June 2014
might be scratched off from summer
altogether.
Snow and biting cold has kept peo-
ple in the mindset of no end in sight,
and has prevented many from taking
day trips to our states wonderful good-
weather spots, or from planning future
trips, as well.
In a little more than 60 days, the offi-
cial start of the summer beach season
will be here. Does that even sound
right?
New Jersey relies heavily on
tourism, especially at the Shore dur-
ing the summer. Last summer was
hurt by the aftermath of Hurricane
Sandy. Will this summer be hurt by
more bad weather?
Lets hope not.
in our opinion
Hello, spring, are you here yet?
Our moods, our businesses, our livelihoods depend on your arrival
Your thoughts
What are you most looking forward to this
spring? While you are out and about
enjoying what hopefully will be beautiful
weather, send us the photos you take
along the way, and well be happy to share
them with the rest of the town.

The Camden
County Board of
Freeholders is pre-
senting its 2014 Par-
enting Conference:
Raising The Next
Generation, on Sat-
urday, April 12, from 9
a.m. to 2 p.m. at
Pennsauken High
School, 800 Hylton
Road, Pennsauken.
This is an important event, created
by the Camden County Board of Free-
holders and organized by the Depart-
ment of Health & Human Services, to
help support children, youth and fami-
lies with an informative, interactive to-
tally free educational and fun-filled day
of workshops, exhibitors, on-site child-
care, an all-day brunch, face painting,
balloon animals, entertainment, door
prizes, giveaway bags and more.
You need to register online now at:
www.camdencounty.com/parent-
ing2014 to ensure your spot and make
sure you get into the workshops you
want. Space is limited.
The conference is designed to help
families grow together, set positive
goals and achieve them. Our reason for
presenting this conference is that there
is nothing more important as a build-
ing block of society than the role of the
family in childrens lives. That is why,
several years ago, the Board of Free-
holders created a Covenant for Chil-
dren, Youth and Families. Through the
Covenant, the Freeholder Board has
dedicated itself to proactively helping
families achieve their potential by pro-
viding them with programs and infor-
mation they can use in their daily lives.
We want to thank all our sponsors, in-
cluding the newspapers in which the
freeholder columns appear weekly, for
their support
The day is a mix of interactive work-
shops for adults and children. There
are two sessions of 30 workshops, on
topics ranging from
girls and body image to
science in the kitchen,
martial arts, early
childhood development
and more. The keynote
speaker will be June
Grushka Rosen, a Life
Coach and family
counselor from Had-
donfield, speaking on
coaching your family to greatness.
Many of our County agencies and
departments are participating in work-
shops or as exhibitors, from Camden
County College to the Camden County
Library System, with workshops on
early reading and using the library, to
Rutgers Cooperative Extension and 4-
H presenting workshops on enjoying
the outdoors, science, and robotics.
Camden County Technical Schools will
be on hand displaying their programs,
ranging from law enforcement to child-
care, cooking and catering to agricul-
ture and gardening.
The County Sheriffs Department
will be there with its K-9 unit and the
Camden County Police Department
Metro Division will also be there, with
officers and equipment. The Countys
Row OfficersCounty Clerk Joe Ripa,
Surrogate Patricia Egan Jones and
Sheriff Chuck Billinghamwill be on
hand to present awards for their
county poster contest on why Camden
County is a great place to live.
Please come and join us for an unfor-
gettable day. If you want to be an ex-
hibitor, please contact Ester Falcone at:

Jeanette and Rick had triplets
in July 1973, and have now been
blessed with a grandson, Aidan,
who is 4 years old.
In addition to her passion for
her family and Voorhees,
Jeanette has also been a tireless
advocate for our veterans and vet-
eran affairs. Her service to our
country has given Jeanette a
unique perspective in making
sure those who have served are
treated honorably and fairly.
For 25 years, Jeanette Schel-
berg has been the foundation and
cornerstone of our Town Hall. In
my 12 years of service on town-
ship committee, and my 10 years
as mayor, whether in a work ses-
sion or a public meeting, I simply
have to look to my left to see
Jeanette to know that all is right.
While most people know of
Jeanettes efficiency, courtesy and
professionalism, only a select few
are aware of her compassion, loy-
alty and love for her colleagues.
As Jeanettes reign ends, a new
era begins, with the promotion of
deputy clerk Dee Ober to the posi-
tion of clerk. Dee has been fortu-
nate to work alongside Jeanette
for many years. A seamless tran-
sition is expected by all.
On behalf of the Voorhees
community and the other mem-
bers of the committee, we are
thankful to Jeanette Schelberg for
her many years of service, and
wish her a long and healthy re-
tirement!

The students, ages 18 months
to 5 years, have created artwork
based upon the masters of art his-
tory, including Picasso, Calder,
Manet, Mondrian, O'Keefe and

Dogs of all sizes are encour-
aged to take part in the annual
costume contest. This years cos-
tume theme is fairy tales, and
Clarke reminds dog owners to be
creative.
As dogs up for adoption are set
to be the real stars of the Paws
event, the AWA will not be the
only organization showing dogs.
Though no details can be given at
this time, other area organiza-
tions will be in attendance, with
adoptable pets in tow.
There is a lot of work that
goes into this event, Clarke
said.
Still, Clarke stressed that the
event is always worth having, es-
pecially when she receives posi-
tive feedback from Voorhees com-
munity participants.
Paws and Feet 5K Doggie Fun
Day is a great time. I enjoy how
family-oriented and pet friendly
the event is. There are lots of fun
activities and opportunities for
people of all ages to engage in
and have fun, former Paws event
participant Navonne Owen said.
You can walk, run or just come
out and enjoy the day. I am happy
to support such a great cause, and
assist the Animal Welfare Associ-
ation with its mission of helping
pets and people.
If Paws and Feet 5K seems too
far away, the AWA is hosting a se-
ries of Yappy Hour events until
then. The first-ever Yappy Hour is
set for April 25, from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
The event will take place at the
shelter, at 509 Centennial Blvd.
It will be, The only place
where pooches can enjoy barkti-
nis, Clarke said.
Besides specialty drinks and
treats for dogs, there will be food
and brews available for adults. All
adults partaking in the event
must be 21 and over.
Other activities at Yappy Hour
will include doggie swimming
pool stations and tanks where
dogs will be able to bob for hot
dogs.
Its a nice social time weve
been talking about it for a year
now, Clarke said.
After the first Yappy Hour, fu-
ture event dates will be posted on
the AWA website.
To learn more about the AWA
or any activities happening with
the shelter, please call 424-2288, or
visit www.awanj.org.

Other staff members on hand
will be from the Merchantville Li-
brary, the Rutgers-Camden Li-
brary and more.
Librarians and other profes-
sionals will be available to show
parents and other caregivers in-
expensive and feasible ways to
play with their children that en-
hance a childs development,
Freeholder Ian Leonard, Camden
County Freeholder Board liaison
to the county library system,
said.
Its a team effort, Moore elab-
orated.
The two Voorhees staff mem-
bers who helped Moore through
the process of planning the event
are Christen Orbanus and Wendy
Ensor.
Moore first saw a similar play
date discussed in a recent edi-
tion of the School Library Jour-
nal. First held in a library in
Brooklyn, the description of the
event and positive feedback con-
vinced Moore that Voorhees
could host a similar event, with
just as much success.
It sounded really cool, and
like something we could definite-
ly do here, Moore said.
In addition to the previously
mentioned play date activities,
the fun-filled day will also include
three brief story times hosted by
librarians.
Stroller parking and a family
break room will be available on
the first floor.
Regarding strolling parking
among other aspects of the Big
Play Date, were prepared for a
lot of people, Moore said.
The event is free and open to
any parents and caregivers in the
area, but registration is required.
If the event is considered a suc-
cess, the Voorhees Library staff
will be willing to help other Cam-
den County branches have play
dates, too, and Voorhees residents
would be able to attend any such
events.
Another library event will
occur on Saturday, March 22. The
library is offering something new
with Doonya, a fun fitness pro-
gram driven by the pounding
beats and rhythms of Bollywood
music. The Doonya workshop
will take place at noon. Doonya of-
fers an easy-to-follow cardio,
strength-building fitness pro-
gram, choreographed by instruc-
tor Ritu Pandya.
Doonya dancing is not only
fun, but it gives a total-body work-
out as well, according to
Shyamoli De, the adult services li-
brarian who scheduled the pro-
gram.
Another special library event
planned for this spring is a self-
defense for women workshop.
Karate master Tom Fitzgerald
will help women ages 16 and up
learn the most basic yet effective
self-defense techniques. The
event will take place on May 3, at
1 p.m.
Registration for all of the men-
tioned library events is free, and
available online at www.camden-
countylibrary.org, or by calling
the branch at 772-1636.
