Floridas January Employment Figures Released

www.employflorida.com

NOTE TO EDITORS: Every March, the U.S. Department of Labors Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Florida Department of
Economic Opportunity release January employment and unemployment estimates as well as revised historical data.
Todays report is the result of that annual process, which is known as benchmarking. These benchmark revisions are a
standard part of the estimation process and take place this same time every year in each state nationwide. As a result of
this annual benchmarking process, the release of January and February 2014 employment data is scheduled for March 17
and March 28, respectively.

TALLAHASSEE Floridas seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.1 percent in January 2014, down 0.2
percentage point over the month, and down 1.9 percentage points from 8.0 percent a year ago. The states
January rate was the lowest since June 2008 when it was 6.0 percent. There were 581,000 jobless Floridians
out of a labor force of 9,454,000. The U.S. unemployment rate was 6.6 percent in January. Floridas
unemployment rate was 0.5 percentage point lower than the U.S. rate and was below the national rate for the
sixth consecutive month.
Floridas seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 7,678,000 in January 2014, a decrease of
2,600 jobs (less than 0.1 percent) over the month. Compared to January a year ago, the number of jobs in the
state was up by 192,800, an increase of 2.6 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs was up 1.7 percent over
the year. Floridas annual job growth rate has exceeded or been equal to the nations rate since March 2012.

Floridas Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted)

The number of jobs in Florida was 7,678,000 in January 2014, up 192,800 jobs compared to a year ago. January
2014 was the 42nd consecutive month with positive annual job growth after the state lost jobs for over three years.
The industry gaining the most jobs was trade, transportation, and utilities (+47,500 jobs, +3.1 percent).

Other industries gaining jobs included professional and business services (+46,200 jobs, +4.2 percent); leisure and
hospitality (+34,900 jobs, +3.4 percent); construction (+32,700 jobs, +9.2 percent); private education and health
services (+12,900 jobs, +1.2 percent); manufacturing (+10,100 jobs, +3.2 percent); financial activities (+9,200 jobs,
+1.8 percent); and other services (+4,300 jobs, +1.4 percent).

These industry job gains were partially due to increases in food and beverage stores; services to buildings and
dwellings; food services and drinking places; specialty trade contractors; ambulatory health care services; fabricated
metal product manufacturing; insurance carriers and related activities; and repair and maintenance.

Information (-500 jobs, -0.4 percent) and total government (-4,500 jobs, -0.4 percent) lost jobs over the year. These
losses were partially due to internet service providers and data processing and federal and state government.
Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

In January 2014, Monroe County had the states lowest unemployment rate (3.8 percent), followed by Walton
County (4.2 percent); Alachua and Okaloosa counties (5.0 percent each); and St. Johns County (5.1 percent). Many
of the counties with the lowest unemployment rates were those with relatively high proportions of government
employment.

Hendry County had the highest unemployment rate (9.8 percent) in Florida in January 2014, followed by Flagler
County (9.3 percent); Hamilton County (9.1 percent); and Madison and Putnam counties (8.5 percent each).
Hendrys high rate was mainly due to long-term job losses in government employment. There were no counties
with double-digit unemployment rates for January or December.
Area Nonagricultural Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

All of the 22 metro areas in the state had over-the-year job gains in January 2014. The areas with the largest gains
were Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford (+36,400 jobs, +3.5 percent), Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall (+30,500 jobs, +2.9
percent), and Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (+29,400 jobs, +2.6 percent).

Note: The unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis. In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based on actual counts from Florida's
Reemployment Assistance tax records and other data.
Procedures mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics may result in more variable month-to-month changes. For further information, go to:
http://www.bls.gov/sae/cesprocs.htm

The mission of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity is to promote economic prosperity for all Floridians and
businesses through successful workforce, community, and economic development strategies.

The next Florida Employment and Unemployment release will be March 28, 2014, at 10:00 A.M.
