Your Four Letters Personality Theory: ISTP

What Your Four Letters mean Your personality type is based on the work of C. G. Jung (pronounced "young"), a Swiss psychoanalyst who published a book called Psychological Types that changed the way people saw themselves. When people understand their personality preferences, they often experience a surprised "ah-ha" feeling of enlightenment. Choices and events that used to be puzzling now make sense. Jung proposed that people have personality preferences similar to being right or left handed. There are four pairs of type factors; one's personality type is the combination of the four type factor preferences and is expressed as four letters: e.g. ISTP.

E OR I
First Preference: Extraversion or Introversion (E or I) The first type factor answers the question, "What captures people's attention?". People with a preference for Extraversion focus their attention outwards and so are drawn to the external world of action. Because their focus is outwards, they tend to become more talkative and their interests more varied. Extraverts tend to talk - sometimes without thinking. People with a preference for Introversion focus their attention inwards and so are drawn to the inner world of understanding. Because their focus is inwards, they tend to become more thoughtful and their interests are deeper. Introverts tend to think - sometimes without talking. In your case, you prefer Introversion, so your first letter is an I.

S OR N
Second Preference: Sensing or iNtuition (S or N) iNtuition is spelled this way because the capital letter I has already been used for Introversion. The second type factor answers the question, "How do people find out about their world?". People with a preference for Sensing learn about their world through experience. Because they focus on what they have seen or heard or touched, they develop a practical and realistic outlook on the world.

People with a preference for intuition go beyond their direct experience and focus on the meaning of the information. This gives them a "big picture" outlook on life and they tend to become creative and innovative. In your case, you prefer Sensing so your second letter is an S.

T OR F
Third Preference: Thinking or Feeling (T or F) The third type factor answers the question, "How do people make decisions?". People with a preference for Thinking make decisions based on impersonal criteria like principles and logic. Because they apply the same rules to everyone, they tend to become fair and businesslike. Thinking-types ask: "Is this decision logical? Can I support the decision with facts?" People with a preference for feeling make decisions based on their own personal values. This often means taking into account the impact that decision will have on someone's life. Because they treat everyone individually, they tend to become empathetic and compassionate. Feeling-types ask: "How do I feel about this decision? What will be the consequences for those involved?" In your case, you prefer Thinking, so your third letter is a T.

J OR P
Fourth Preference: Judging or Perceiving (J or P) The fourth type factor was added by Katherine Briggs and Isabelle Myers as an extension of Jung's model. This type factor answers the question, "How do people approach life?". The term judging does not mean judgmental (being critical or negative) - the emphasis is on making decisions. People with a preference for Judging want their lives to be predictable so they make decisions quickly. Judging-types tend to be organized. People with a preference for Perceiving want their lives to be open to new experiences so they postpone decisions. Perceiving-types tend to be spontaneous. In your case, you prefer Perceiving, so your fourth letter is a P.
