Birla Institute of Technology & Science - Pilani, K. K.

Birla, Goa Campus Instruction Division First Semester 2012-2013 Course Handout (Part II) 1-Aug-12 In addition to Part I (General Handout for all courses appended to the Time Table), this portion gives further specific details regarding the course. Course No : Course Title : Instructor In charge: DE G631 Materials Technology & Testing Vikas Chaudhari

1. Course Description: A Variety of materials continue to proliferate in the Industry according to the needs of developments and applications specific to the needs of the designers. The Processes keep improving with the advent of new technologies and new materials. Materials in applications are tending to be competitive. Material substitution has become very important and as a result designers need to know the implications the usage of the new materials and long-term characteristics. Designers are also faced with the challenges of the right material selection and production techniques to be cost effective for the application on hand. 2. Scope & Objective: The Course is for higher degree students, and intended to focus their attention to the nature of different classes of the engineering materials. Study includes characteristics of metals, polymers, composites, ceramics and other modern Engineering materials, and their applications. Methods of testing the materials (destructive and NDT), and selection of the material, for a given application are included. 3. Text Book: T1 William F. Smith, Javal Hashemi, Material Science & Engineering, In SI units Fourth edition, McGrawHill.
