PROJECT REPORT on SIKSHANA FOUNDATION

BY Ayush Agarwal Sunny Agarwal Varun Kothari Grisha Wadhawa Runa Das Adrito Sanyal Vaishnavi

Preface There is a famous saying education is to mind what exercise is to health. The child is weak, helpless and ignorant at birth. But he gradually grows and develops. He acquires knowledge and skills. He realizes thoughts into actions and satisfies his needs. He changes his behavior according to his environment. This is the result of his learning and maturation. Learning is the modification of behavior. Thus education is the process by which the knowledge, character and behavior of an individual are formed and modified. One's conduct and behavior are changed and refined according to the desired standard of the society. This is the result of education. As a part of the We Care program, a three week internship at Sikshana foundation was an extremely enriching experience. Sikshana Foundation is a social enterprise (NGO), started in the year 2002 with a vision to provide quality education for every child studying in government schools. The organization believes that education is an essential basis of good life. A man becomes a human being in the real sense when he is transformed from primarily an animal being into a human being. In short, education is an essential concomitant of all human societies. "What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the soul", says Addison. This dissertation tries to identify the effects of Sikshana programs and how their initiatives have helped children and society at large. Some initiatives which can give the NGO more visibility have also been discussed. There may be some scope for improvement but serious efforts have been put into to get the best results.

Executive Summary The project at Sikshana Foundation is mainly intended to come up with initiatives to increase the visibility of Sikshana foundation and designing of survey questionnaires to understand the effectiveness of Sikshana programs in schools. The surveys have been designed to understand the perceptions of teachers, headmasters, SDMC and Shala Hitaishis. The various initiatives planned to increase the vogue of Sikshana were as below. Social Media Platform: Increasing the visibility of Sikshana Foundation on social media by having more engaging activities on the social media page. Celebrating the International Mother-Tongue Day at various Sikshana schools and planning of a final event at Bangalore, for winners of various locations. Making of videos to emphasise the importance of education and highlighting the work Sikshana was doing in empowering the Government schools and association of the video to social media. The visit to schools gave an insight into the implementation of the Sikshana programs and the impact of those programs on school children, in a spectacular manner. The interactions with the mentors, Shala Hitaishis and few parents gave a clear view of the needs of children and how well Sikshana has been serving them. This report includes some outcomes of the interactions and the implementation of International Mother Tongue Day on 21st Feb at Hoskote schools. The report also includes few recommendations which can be implemented as Sikshana programs in the future for the betterment of students. Chapter 1 Introduction & Project Methodology 1.1 Problem Identification Fund utilization of SDMC Level of Kannada fluency is low Parents are not motivated to send students to school Career break and dropout rate is high Low visibility of Sikshana foundation 1.2 Project Objective To understand the effectiveness of Sikshana programme To understand the point of view of Parents, HM, Teachers , Mentors and SDMC To increase awareness of Sikshana foundation using social media platform To encourage Kannada language creating a road map for Language Day

1.3 Project Methodology

1.4 Primary Target Sikshana has been involved with various programs to improve the quality of learning: o Programs that improve and track learning levels: Reading program o Provide resources that improve learning levels: providing unlimited writing sheets, Diaries provided to every child to track their learning process, vocabulary building dictionaries. o Mentoring and monitoring. o Programs to encourage children to learn and perform better in academics: Star badges, Delhi trip. The surveys were designed to assess the effectiveness of Sikshanas program based on 5 factors namely Awareness, Impact, Feedback, Information, Performance.

The survey was targeted to Teachers, Headmasters, SDMC and Mentors to gauge this effectiveness based on their feedback. 1.5 Scope of the Project: Includes: Survey questions to understand the point of view of Parents, HM, Teachers , Mentors and SDMC Preparation of complete event plan for celebration of 21st February as International mother-tongue day in Sikshana schools Preparation of a road map for increasing visibility on social media - a marketing perspective Preparation of Career counseling day road map. Does not include: Actual execution of the survey Implementation of the event of 21st February as International mother-tongue day in Sikshana schools Actual implementation of Career counseling day Continuation of social media marketing after the completion of We-Care programme

1.6 Services Offered

Survey Forming a questionnaire to be circulated to the parents, teachers, headmasters, mentors and School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC). 21st event plan 21st February, being International Mother Tongue Day, an event was conducted across Sikshana schools to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity. Social media increasing visibility of the foundation through online portals and making people aware about the work Sikshana is doing. Creation of videos to involve more and more people and let them know about the organization. Campus visits to spread awareness about the various Sikshana programs.

1.7 Service Delivery Mechanism designed

Social media Facebook and YouTube School visits to understand the difference between Sikshana and non Sikshana schools and suggest further improvements required for effective implementation of programs

Interaction with mentors - to get their opinions on how effectively the Sikshana programs are implemented in the schools. Interaction with headmasters and teachers to get their opinions on the current scenario of education in the schools. Interaction with parents to know their awareness levels and the constraints they face in sending their children to school. Meeting with our guides in the organization to know about the functioning of the organization and a roadmap for the tasks to be done. 1.8 Challenges faced by Sikshana: One of the problems they face is the coordination amongst the village schools and the urban schools. The designed curriculum may be the same but they are not carried out in the same manner. As a result the performance of students gets affected. The parents are hardly aware of the necessity of education of their children. So often they withdraw their children from school after primary school. Another challenge faced by the organization is the communication gap between the mentors and the teachers of the schools. Due to this problem many a times it becomes quite difficult to maintain the curriculum.

Chapter 2 Surveys 2.1 What One of the most important tasks assigned to us in this internship was to design a survey to evaluate the effectiveness and awareness of the Sikshana programs. A questionnaire was formed, seeking responses from the respondents. Questionnaires have advantages over some other types of surveys in that they are cheap, do not require as much effort from the questioner as verbal or telephone surveys, and often have standardized answers that make it simple to compile data. The questionnaire had questions both open ended as well as close ended. 2.2 Target Audience: Parents Teachers Headmasters

2.3 How

Mentors SDMC Shala Hitaishis

The survey was drafted after going through the Dalbergs Report and the Annual Report of Sikshana. By going through these reports we got an idea about Sikshanas programs and also how the questionnaire needs to be framed using the necessary parameters. 2.4 Why The survey for parents, teachers, headmasters, mentors and SDMC was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Sikshana programs. The survey for Shala Hitaishis was designed to evaluate the awareness of the Sikshana programs. The main objective of the survey was to understand the gap between reality and expectations from the Sikshana programs and to take measures to improve upon the same. The survey designed by the marketing team was passed on to the analytics team for further analysis and interpretation so that they could test it on a sample data and after interpreting their results they could execute the surveys to target audience mentioned above.

Chapter 3 Media Social Media & Broadcast Media Social Media Current Scenario Sikshana has taken up several initiatives spanning across various schools and the programme is benefiting 1.8 lakh students. For any social change to be more successful in its mission and purpose it should involve and make the common man aware. It should inspire people to be a part of the bigger change. Currently the social presence for Sikshana is low so the requirement for the NGO is to increase its visibility which will help make people aware of various initiatives and also attract volunteers. Purpose

One of the emerging tools for effective promotions is the Social media marketing. Our team worked on a plan for promoting their Facebook page. For this we came up with various Stories, videos and updates that could help Sikshana connect with people over the internet. Target Audience Graduation and Post-graduation students Working professionals To increase the visibility of Sikshana foundation on Facebook we have phased out the entire activity as: Why: Awareness related to education Main purpose is to increase engagement on this page. Spreading the word related to education. This will help increase page traffic. Sources to be utilized Sikshana Blog Videos on You tube (Refer annexure for links)

What: Awareness around Sikshana Purpose is to showcase journey of Sikshana. Make people aware of the social change Sikshana has brought about. Sources to be utilized The journey of Sikshana can be showcased through video created by the team. Any Sikshana initiatives related to content at various district level needs to be sourced to be

How: Sikshana Initiatives Team has generated Articles which talk about Sikshana initiatives Existing resources available on YouTube channels can be posted

Volunteer Experience As volunteers we have written our experience and created video resources around it. Similarly for any volunteer activity a central team can source the data which can be posted online.

To increase the effectiveness Social Media Marketing

The following recommendation have been made by the team Building a common page where by closing all the other pages started up by volunteer and mentors Linking the Facebook page with the Website. Tagging the volunteers and mentors in each post will help increasing the reach Any external communication from team Sikshana should carry link to Facebook page. If required Sikshana can also go for Adverts that is Facebook paid advertisement in the short run so as to gain visibility. Forming a central content management team which will source from content (video, articles and pictures) for any events that happen across schools Media article should be published on Facebook pages. Note: The scope of the above material is limited but following a similar structure can help Sikshana sustain visibility. Broadcast Media We managed to tie up with Suvarna channel to cover the event on 21st February which was on the International Mother Tongue Day. The channel knows about Sikshana Foundation and what role they play in contributing towards a childs education and also improving the government schools with its programs. Sikshana has established a good connect with the channel and they could leverage on this contact to cover their future events or any special programs that take place be it in the city schools or rural schools.

Chapter 4 Videos for YouTube & Facebook A video was created for Sikshana foundation basically for the following 3 reasons: To bring awareness about Sikshanas initiatives and to sensitize the people regarding the agenda it strives for. Video also served the purpose of being used in corporate donor presentation by showcasing their work from a volunteers perspective. The video was an end-to-end demonstration of Sikshanas programs to be used for social media. The video aimed at bringing out the real picture of Sikshana. It is not only education of children that it seeks but the quality of education that will empower them to perform and excel when they are provided with all the facilities and motivation from their teachers and mentors. They are also striving to raise the bar continuously and reach much above the ASER levels in terms of Kannada reading, writing and Arithmetic skills which will help the children compete at par with children studying in normal private schools.

The video has highlighted most of Sikshanas programs namely: Reading program Writing sheet program Motivational program Mentoring Delhi trip Summer camps Teacher training Gurupuraskar Community engagement The link to the video is as below: http://youtu.be/5imkd_G2or0 The effort made was highly appreciated by the Sikshana board of directors. The video could be used by them in future during corporate donor presentation. Another video was made to capture the volunteer experiences during the school visit at Halsur. We saw three different medium schools at a single campus: Kannada, Urdu and Telugu medium. Chapter 5 - International Mother Tongue Day Celebration Why

After the analysis from various Dalberg reports and discussion with Sikshana team we found that major statistic that was concerning Sikshana was fluency in language Kannada despite of the schools being Kannada medium. As students come from diverse background so the Language was a key concern for the team as students were not reaching up to a mark. Sikshana is doing great initiatives in the sphere of education by empowering the government schools to improve the quality of education but the NGO and its work was not very well known.

The celebration of the International Mother Tongue Day was planned by our team and the NGO accepted the idea readily. A complete plan of programmes for the day with elements keeping the students engaged was expected from us. After a short discussion, our team came up with a plan to have a bundle of literary, art and music competitions. Certain events like quiz on Karnataka, recitation, pick and speak, were planned. Since the theme was to build on the interest of childrens mother tongue, events planned were such that they would have the students actively participating as well as test their knowledge on their mother tongue, Kannada. The event stretched for around four hours and was really an awesome experience for our intern team. This was the preliminary stage which was held in the different taluk levels and the final will be held in Bangalore towards the end of March.

What

In order to emphasize the importance of Language and also appreciate the cultural diversity schools maintain this day was planned

How The planning that we made for the event was as follows: 08:30 09:15 - Introduction Ceremony Introduction to the event State song (Naadageethe) Lighting of the lamp National Anthem 09:30 10:00 - Essay Competition (4-5 topics) -50 Entries 09:30 11:00 - Elocution -15 Entries 11:15 11:25 - Round 1 of quiz Written -25 teams 11.30 12.15 - Final round quiz 12:00 02:00 - Lunch 01:30 02:30 - Drawing competition -50 entries 01:30 02:30 - Group Song -10 entries 03:00 05:00 - Folk Dance - 15 entries 06:00 07:00 - Prize distribution. Results: The results of the celebration of this event are as below. First and foremost, we were amazed to see the wide pool of talent the village schools had. This experience of going to some of the schools in villages, near Hoskote, gave us an insight into the village schools and we were astonished to see some of the brightest kids of the state. The feedback obtained from the school teachers was, encouraging the kids to improvise on their mother tongue is very necessary and this event gave them the much needed opportunity to do the same. We, as interns, got an opportunity to interact with the students and teachers, which actually changed our perceptions about Government schools also. Coverage and display of the event celebration on the social media will help in increasing the visibility of Sikshana Foundation on the social media platform (one of the objectives of this project).

Recommendations Career Counseling Day During the school visit near Halsuru, the interaction with the kids made us feel that they need to be educated on the career opportunities available, other than the conventional engineering, medical fields. Another visit to the village schools, near Hoskote, changed the perception. And there were others with some other thoughts. But one thing was common in all lack of knowledge on how to get there. With a little brainstorming on all the above experiences, we have come up with this recommendation. Students need to have career counseling at right times. During the first week of the school, students need to be given career counseling sessions, (mainly for students in 7th grade). During the counseling, all students can be given information on the various career opportunities available to them apart from just the traditional Engineering and medical careers. Following points need to be focused: The different career opportunities available for the students.

Showcasing success in other fields by sharing videos of successful people in the field of arts, music, sports etc. (available on YouTube) Some students think that choosing a career is not an option to them since they might not be able to afford it. Hence making them aware of the monetary assistance available to them like scholarships from the government, other NGOs etc (some primary research to be done on the available scholarship programmes by different organizations, like Tata scholarships for higher education, etc) is much needed to encourage them to continue their education. Creating awareness on the differences in work life or personal life, with education and without education (obtaining respect in the society, getting the right way of living, etc) Getting professionals from various fields like doctors, artists, scientists, successful businessmen, engineers, defense, IAS, IPS etc will motivate the kids to perceive the things better and work to fulfilling their dreams. A goal setting session for the children, in the form of essay writing on what they want to be in future, how they think they can achieve their goals, what are the hurdles and what they need to overcome the hurdles, can be held in schools. These essays will actually give an idea of the students perceptions about their future. Based on these, there can be sessions held to give them proper guidance which will help the students to have a road map for the future.

Growing up Education for Girls In the current times there is a growing need for the girls to understand growing up and be well aware of the biological changes that their body undergoes when she reaches adolescence. Mainly, for them, to understand the why and what of growing up and help them to be more physically fit. Their growing up should not be inhibited by any myths surrounding it and along with it as she takes up womanhood she should grow as a confident strong female. With this thought in mind we made few recommendations to Sikshana team which can be taken up further Sikshana can start the programme in order to facilitate the same by: Female field mentors/School teachers should take up such sessions for the girls to help them understand the entire process We suggested that workshops can be arranged through various organizations which are in this sphere http://www.doctorsforseva.youthforseva.org/contact-us/ We found few online resources which can be used to demonstrate and facilitate easy learning for kids in the language they will be comfortable understanding. Scope of Session To include education on Biological aspects of changes in girls Sessions on personal hygiene Introduction to Sex education

Take session on image management and motivation The scope can also be included to add basic self Defense for girls
