Sunday 3rd September 1939

Dear Diary, Britain is at war with Germany. The war started today. Me and my brother, Bertie, are going to leave London. My baby sister, Lottie, will stay with Mum because she is only two years old. We are going to live in the countryside. We will be safe there. People say the Germans will drop bombs on London. My brother is angry because he says he will not see the war. I am sad because I will miss my Mum and Dad.

Friday 15th September 1939

Dear Diary, we walked into the fields today. I saw a sheep! I have never seen a sheep. There were lots of sheep in the field. Bertie and me were amazed. Then we saw some cows and later we saw some ducks.

Monday 18th September 1939

Dear Diary, today we started our new school. It is horrible. The children were not nice to us because we are different. A big girl called Molly hit me so I hit her back. But a teacher saw and I was in trouble. I want to go back to London.

Friday 22nd September 1939

Dear Diary, I made a new friend today. Her name is Amy. She helped me in the Maths lesson. I am bad at Maths. But I am good at drawing so I helped her in the art lesson. We played together at lunchtime. I am going to her house tomorrow. Things are much better.

Sunday 27th October 1939 Wednesday 13th September 1939

Dear Diary, I got on the train today. All I had was a small suitcase, my teddy and my gas mask. I wore a label with my name on. I said goodbye to Mum, Dad and Lottie. Mum was crying. There were lots of children on the train. They are evacuating thousands of children. We are going to a village in Wales. The train journey took a long time, but it was nice to look at the countryside. When we got to the village we went to a school. The men and women took all the children to their houses. Me and Bertie went with Mr and Mrs Williams. They are quite old but they are nice. Dear Diary, Some children went back to London. People say it is safe there. The Germans are not attacking Britain. Maybe there will not be a war.

Saturday 7th September 1940

Today the Germans dropped bombs on London. Many people were killed. I hope my friends are safe. Im glad Im here and not in London. Poor London. Today we picked potatoes.

Thursday 14th September 1939

Dear Diary, we had a lovely breakfast. Eggs, bacon, sausages, bread and tea. Then we walked around the village. It is very pretty. It is much nicer than London. But its not the same without Mum and Dad. Im very sad and scared. I cried in bed last night. I think Bertie is very sad too.
