ENGLISH FOR MEDICAL

STUDENTS
CLIVE BRASNETT
This book is intended to help the medical and pre-
medical student who is planning to study medicine
in English. It is assumed that he will have some knowledge
of general English, but little experience of studying
works in scientific English.
Passages have been selected from a variety of standard
medical textbooks and reproduced in their original form.
In the first part of the book simplified versions precede
the actual passages so that the reader proceeds from a
familiar kind of English to a less familiar kind. Notes
following the passages draw attention to characteristic
but unfamiliar features of the kind of scientific English
used in medical texts, and exercises provide opportunities
for the student to check his understanding of both
vocabulary and structure. There are also pronunciation
practice lists and a short dictionary is provided.
Whereas for some years books have been available
designed to help doctors from non-English speaking
countries develop their skills in spoken English in order
to be able to conduct their day-to-day clinical practice,
little attention has been paid to developing reading
skills in the field of medicine. Those running English
courses for medical students and practitioners from non-
English speaking countries will generally want to balance
the spoken component of their courses with a reading
component, such as is provided in this book.
The author has been involved in teaching English and in
developing English teaching programmes in North
Africa, the Middle East, India, Malaysia and Kenya.

Brings Music
to the ESL Class
Music is an excellent medium for language learning.
Consciously or unconsciously, listeners absorb vocabulary,
grammatical structures, and pronunciation from songs they
hear
Collier Macmillan s first recording of songs for Jearning
English was Hard to Learn That English as a Second
Language Blues by Laurie Wellman and Donald R.H. Byrd.
Now we have released our second album. ESL Express, by
the same authors. Each is available in record album or
cassette form featuring ten original songs sung and ar-
ranged by a talented, contemporary group of musicians.
The Brain Train. Each musical selection focuses on a
grammatical point. Many musical genres (folk, calypso,
blues, gospel, rock & roll) are represented. Each record or
cassette comes with an insert containing the words to all
the songs and suggested classroom activities.
Now you can use music to clarify and/or reinforce your
classroom lessons. Hard to Leam That English as a
Second Language Blues is for intermediate level students.
ESL Express for beginners. A demonstration cassette tape,
highlighting selections from both albums, is available upon
request.
