EMPLOYING SUCCESSFUL DELIVERY SKILLS

Your message may be great, but your audience might never hear it
if theyre too distracted by your delivery. Successful facilitators
have honed their delivery skillsboth verbal and nonverbal.
Verbal Delivery
Skills
One of the most important facilitator tools is the voice. To take full
advantage of your voice, incorporate the following vocal
characteristics.
CHARACTERISTIC EXPLANATION
Pleasant
A pleasant voice conveys a sense of warmth and is
easy to listen to over extended periods of time.
Natural
A voice that is natural reflects your true
personality and sincerity. It doesnt come across
to others as being practiced or constrained. In
addition, use a natural, even pacenot too fast,
not too slow.
Dynamic
A dynamic voice gives the impression of force and
strength, even when it isnt especially loud.
It commands attention at appropriate times. Its
helpful to develop a dynamic voice for speaking
in front of large groups.
Expressive
An expressive voice portrays subtle differences in
meaning. It never sounds monotonous or
emotionless.
Easily Heard
If your voice can be easily heard, it projects the
proper volume for the size of the group to whom
youre speaking. Also, making sure you are easily
heard is especially important when using AV
equipment or darkening the room.

To practice these techniques, tape-record yourself presenting your
training materials. This practice will help you incorporate the
characteristics of an effective speaking voice.

check for understanding.
2. Make comparisons: have participants compare the known with
the unknown to promote transfer of learning.
3. Probe for opinions: ask participants for their points of view to
discover and/ or correct misconceptions.
4. Propose a case to solve: ask participants to manipulate
information and arrive at a reasonable answer to practice
recently acquired knowledge or skills.
Your Turn
With the above techniques in mind, think about which questions
prove to be the most difficult for participants to answer in your
training classes. How can you best handle these situations?
