CRITICAL CA RE A ND EMERGENCIES MAST ERS PROGRA M

The 'Critical Care and Emergencies Master's Program' from Barcelona University is a higher education course intended to improve the knowledge, technical skills and attitudes necessary for managing the critical patient in any circumstance. It is an interdisciplinary program for healthcare professionals interested in intensive care, emergency medicine and pre-hospital emergencies. The course is adapted to the needs of both physicians and nursing professionals. The academic design is based on learning the core competences, acquiring skills and goal-oriented, practical approaches in order to help students achieve a high-quality and safer clinical practice. We believe in an educational model that is based on reflective learning and critical thinking. The course follows a 5 module structure.

Module I. BACKG ROUN D KNOWLEDG E IN CRITICAL CARE AND EMERGENCIES. 30 ECTS - On campus or on-line Module I aims to consolidate the theoretical foundation that will guide the student during the learning process. Taught in lectures and seminars focused on participatory problems (problem based learning) with class discussion/argumentation of clinical cases. The progression of the module follows the continuum of care process, starting with basic pre-hospital care procedures and ending with the complex multi-morbidity ICU inpatient. This module consists of 30 ECTS credits and requires a commitment of 8hours of class every week during 9 months and an estimate of 3h of weekly study. This module is offered both on campus and online. We have also created various resources to help our students acquire the required theoretical knowledge. Critical Care and Emergencies Book. Elsevier. Interactive Critical care and Emergencies. Available for iPad. Virtual Campus with interactive content & Online lectures. A selected bibliography of interest.

Module II. SKIL LS IN CRITICAL CARE AND EMERGENCIES. 30 ECTS - On campus The second step is the practical training of skills, which is developed through mandatory and optional workshops with mannequins and high-fidelity simulators (Clinical Simulation Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine UB) and prehospital drills in specialized facilities (Public Safety Institute of Catalonia) The progression of the module is based on the theoretical knowledge of module I and follows the continuum of care process from the emergency setting to the ICU.

This module consists of 30 ECTS credits and requires a commitment of 4 hours of workshops per week for 9 months. In addition to workshops, during this module students will also be required to participate in two multiple victims drills, in one civilian and one military setting, and also undergo Basic Life Support, BLS+AED and Advanced Life Support courses.

Module III. SIMULATION IN CRITICAL EMERG ENCIES. 10 ECTS - On campus -

CARE

AND

As a third step, the simulation intends to complete the training curriculum of the student, allowing implementation of the knowledge and skills in a realistic clinical situation in a secure environment, with a parallel focus on improving the students' teamwork and decision-making capacities. This module consists of lectures on patient safety, participatory seminars on leadership and communication, 40 computer-designed decision-making cases, and training with virtual biomedical simulators and simulation exercises in multidisciplinary teams based on Crisis Resource Management (CRM). Requires an average commitment of 3 hours per week.

Module IV. CLINICAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES IN CRITICAL CARE AND EMERGENCIES. 10 ECTS - On campus The objective of the fourth module is to transfer the learnt knowledge and skills to the real clinical setting. This takes place in real Intensive Care Units and Emergency Departments of various University Hospitals and during stays with the Pre-hospital Emergency Systems. Students will be tutored by specialised clinical mentors at all times. Consists of 10 ECTS and requires an average commitment of 20 hours per week for 8 weeks, over the period of four months.

Module V. RESEARCH PROJECT.10 ECTS - On campus or online The fifth module aims to stimulate critical scientific reading and familiarization with the process of biomedical research. The methodology, research tools and analysis are taught in this module through lectures and personalized tutoring. The module consists of 10 ECTS and requires an average commitment of 3h a week for 6 months including classes, mentoring and development of the research project. !
