APPROACH TO INSPECTION PLANNING

Implicit in the <ar/t= loo#up ta(les is a remaining life. /hen the damage factor rises to 10 or higher -ith 4 or more <highly= effecti)e inspections then the e!uipment is at or near the end of its life. In other -ords there ha)e (een enough inspections to ha)e relati)e certainty a(out the corrosion rate and additional inspections no longer impro)e the damage factor. 'he inspection planning method sol)es for the num(er of years at -hich this point occurs *roughly ar/t A 0.4 -ith corrections for pressure and corrosion allo-ance+. If this )alue is one year or less a <diagnostics= module is called to pro)ide a -arning that (ased on the entered corrosion rate age and num(er of inspections the e!uipment is already at or near its end of life. 3areful data chec#ing and/or confirmation of e!uipment condition are recommended. If the remaining life is greater than one year determine the num(er of inspections needed to achie)e a high confidence in the corrosion rate o)er the remaining life of the e!uipment. 'his is e1pressed as the num(er of inspections of -hate)er effecti)eness has (een performed in the past assuming that this is the <preferred= inspection type for this plant. 'he num(er of inspections can easily (e con)erted to an e!ui)alent num(er of inspections of a different effecti)eness (ased on the follo-ing relationships: One <highly effecti)e= is e!ui)alent to t-o <usually effecti)e = is e!ui)alent to four <fairly effecti)e.= If 3>I is applica(le in addition to internal thinning the target damage factor is set to : for each mechanism so that the com(ined mechanisms -ill not lead to a damage factor greater than 10.

Determine the current technical module su(factor. If this is less than 10 then use the 933 module <escalation= factor *years since last inspection+ of 1.1 to determine the num(er of years until a '295 of 10 -ill (e reached. .s a default perform a <5airly= effecti)e inspection at that time as a chec# on the 933 condition. If the current '295 is greater than 10 use the relationships in 'a(le 7$1: to determine the inspection le)el re!uired. It is recommended that the inspection (e performed -ithin three years of the last inspection or as soon as practical if more than three years has elapsed.
