The Kobe-based Refugee Assistance Headquarters (RHQ) provides a confidential counseling service for refugees, convention refugees, their family members, and asylum seekers in English and Japanese on every Thursday of the month (10:00 - 16:00) at the NIC 3F Info Counter. Want to help us to create a globally aware Nagoya? As part of its international understanding education program, NICs Classroom for Global Citizens program is looking for foreign instructors to visit schools and local organizations and introduce their home countries. We are looking for instructors who are able to communicate in Japanese, who are available during the day time. The overwhelming sight of countless weeping plum blossoms will carry your heart into the spring as you are mesmerized by the subtle yet striking features of shidareume trees. The Agricultural Center in Tempaku Ward Weeping Plum Blossoms at Nagoya Agricultural Center. Photo by J. Kiujian. is home to a large number of this variety, as well as a range of other agricultural attractions including exotic breeds of chicken. They even have cows (and use the fresh milk to make gelato onsite), pigs, guinea pigs etc. You will also find a fruit/vegetable grocery store there. A highly recommended spot for all age groups. This spring, come and see the beautiful cherry blossoms at Nagoya Castle. At night, they are elegantly lit up and will truly make your visit a memorable one. There will be live traditional music performances including the Koto, Shamisen and Wadaiko (Japanese drum). You can also join the Japanese tea ceremony held on March 30 and April 6 from 10:00 to 15:00. Manju (Japanese sweets) and green tea will be served for 800 Yen. Lowrider Car Show Japan Tour 2014 Kick Off In Nagoya

Since 1980, The Touring Theater has been giving the children of Nagoya, who might not otherwise have an easily accessible opportunity to experience the pleasure of a live stage performance, a chance to witness some impressive talent for themselves! Events are held at local, low-cost venues to make participation as easy as possible for everyone! See the Ningyo Gekidanpan (puppet theatre), Theatrical Bou-kensha Group, Pleasure Kikaku (comedy and mini-circus) and the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra at this event to be enjoyed by all. Nagoya International Orchid Show 2014

One of the events which marks the coming of Spring in the city, is the Nagoya International Orchid Show held at the Nagoya Orchid Gardens. This year will be the 24th since it first began at Fukiage Hall. See various contests in the various display, flower art and craft divisions. Experience transplanting orchids, get to ask experts for their advice; all while taking in the beauty of some of the most beautiful orchids in Japan. What does it mean to be mixed-race in Japan? Today, 1 in 49 babies are born between an international couple. Documentary film Hafu follows the lives of five half-Japanese individuals as they explore what it means to be multiracial and multicultural in a nation that once proudly proclaimed itself as homogenous. For some of these hafus Japan is the only home they know, for some living in Japan is an entirely new experience, and others are caught somewhere between two different worlds. Pedestrian Smoking Penalty: 2,000 Yen

A 2,000 Yen penalty will be imposed on pedestrian smokers in designated zones of the following areas; Nagoya Station, Sakae, Kanayama and Fujigaoka. Earthquakes occur frequently all over Japan. In addition, areas located close to the shore are exposed to the risk of tidal waves (tsunami). The Nagoya Fire Department will be sending out maps to residents by post which indicate hazard zones. Earthquake maps will be sent to all residences, and tsunami hazard maps will be sent to tsunami damage prone areas only. Upon receiving the map, please familiarize yourself with the contents and take the time to revise and practice your evacuation plan with friends and family so that you are as prepared as possible in the event of an emergency.

A well-known unique festival where villagers carry on their shoulders a portable shrine which bears a 2m-long phallus-shaped wooden sculpture. They offer this huge carving to the shrine praying for world peace, the growth of all things, and a good harvest. If you are in Japan only for a short time, this is a festival you should not miss. You may have heard of "hina ningyo", the dolls used in hinamatsuri celebrations who obediently seat themselves on tiers. Well, they have decided to jump off their seats and take - hachiman. See them it to the streets in the castle surrounds of an area in Gifu called Gujo shopping at the local supermarket, playing mahjong and even snowboarding in these carefully crafted miniature sets! A fun "little" event for the whole family to enjoy. Haru Miyawaki (1902-85) was a leading painter from Aichi in the modern age. Toyota Municipal Museum of Art's collection of his work is the largest possessed by any museum. This exhibition attempts to provide a complete picture of Miyawaki's works by supplementing works from the Museum's holdings with outstanding pieces on loan from other collections. The exhibit is divided into two parts; "Realism of Knowledge" and "Realism of Love" - respectively revealing the artist's inspirations, and love for his family. The Lucky Dolls of Gujhachiman Castle

Based on the theme of Divisionism, this exhibition examines Impressionist division of tones, Neo-Impressionist technique of pointillism led by Seurat, and how artists of following generations, beyond regional boundaries, opened their eyes to new possibilities of color through various interpretations of those techniques. Presenting approximately 90 works of art through the special partnership with Krller-Mller Museum, the Netherlands, renowned for its tremendous collection of Van Gogh paintings, as well as selections from major collections in Japan, this exhibition sheds new light on the power of color, the quintessence of painting. Inuyama Castle Spring Festival Thirteen traditional 3 tiered festival floats, which are designated as tangible cultural assets of Aichi Prefecture, are pulled through the citys cherry blossomed streets; between 18:00 and 21:30 these floats are illuminated. Combine a visit to the festival with a visit to Japans oldest castle - Inuyama Castle - located on the hill overlooking the festival. The Ieyasu Parade The seasonal marker of spring in Okazaki has to be "The Ieyasu Parade". Watch the valiant warriors of Mikawa make their way to battle. They are truly a piece of dazzling antiquity brought to life from the illustrated old scrolls of long ago. 700 participants who have been selected through public application will be led by Japan's most prominent historical figure, Okazaki-born Ieyasu TOKUGAWA. During the parade, watch the exciting mock martial arts battles consisting of gunmen and spearmen. The marching ends on the banks of Otogawa River. Toyota Automobile Museum The Toyota Automobile Museum is dedicated to keeping the history of the automobile alive and to continue enriching the future prospects of people and the automobile. With a collection of prominent cars from around the world which are maintained and showcased, the Museum highlights the historical transitions of various cultures and technologies. The wide array of vehicles will spur your imagination, give you the thrill of discovery, and leave you feeling excited about the future of people and the automobile. The current exhibition "Story of the Publica Sports Restoration" will introduce you to the development of this significant model which ultimately influenced the Toyota Sports 800. The "Publica Sports" was a car exhibited at the All-Japan Auto Show in 1962 and presented as an experimental prototype. Although only available in Japanese, some readers may also be interested in the lecture about the "Secret Story of Publica Sports Restoration" on Saturday, March 15 at 13:30 in the Annex Main Hall. ! There are a very large number of fossilised dinosaurs being discovered in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia. What makes them so unique, is the excellent condition in which many of them have been found. See the tarbosaurus, also known as the Asian tyrannosaurus; a primitive ceratopsian protoceratops, along with many other immaculately preserved specimens. Other associated finds and discoveries by Nagoya City Science Museum and Nagoya University Museum of Mongolia's geological features will also be presented.
