Revival for Tswelopele Farms?

Sekhukhune Development Agency (SDA) is spearheading efforts to revive the now largely dormant Tswelopele Cooperative Farms Project adjacent to Burgersfort and Praktiseer. A number of roleplayers attended a meeting yesterday on a piece of the land near Praktiseer, where the Chief Executive Officer of the SDA, Mr Sephaka Motswiane explained the role ahead with the farms. A few years back the land was ustilised for primarily potato farming and supplied the crop to potato chip companies. During the past few years, nothing is going on at the project, except for maize that is planted on a small piece of the farm. When everything went bust a few years ago Platinum Gazette investigated the issue, but nobody, including the Department of Agriculture in Praktiseer were prepared to go on record about the reasons for the apparent failure of the project. Mr Sephaka annouced at yesterdays meeting that 15 people were appointed to start repairing the fence of the land on the Ga-Matodi side of the Penge road. The reason for the meeting was to explain to possible future strategic partners the possible way forward, the role of the SDA, the role of the cooperative and the role of the strategic partners that will tender to render services with regards to the project. The tender procedures and what it is that is neede from strategic pasrttners were also explained to all present. Mr Sephaka said only the one piece of land on the Ga-Matodi side of the road will be focused on at this stage.

217 Dagga plants found

The Leboeng SAPS hosted an operation they called Operation Ntsha Lebake. This took place on 12 March and focussed on young people involved in substance abuse. Dagga is prevalent in the area the operation aimed to bring perpetrators before the law. A 65-year old man was arrested after he was found in possession of 217 dagga plants. The plants were in his garden at Makgalane Village. A 51-year old woman was also arrested for possession of dagga at Tswenyane Village. The two will appear in court soon. The SAPS is warning people to stay away from the cultivation, selling, buying and using of drugs such as dagga. * In another incident reported to the Leboeng SAPS, a 42-year old man was robbed of his car after he offered two hitch hikers a lift during the night. The two got into his vehicle and after approximately 1km pointed a fire arm at him and ordered him to stop and get out of the car. The incident was reported to the SAPS and they managed to recover the vehicle. No arrests have been made. We warn R36 road users to avoid picking up people next to the Leboeng market during night times. This gives robbers an opportunity to take advantage of innocent people said Const. M.A. Sibatana. 4 in court for electricity theft

Electricity thieves in Burgersfort had to face the law this week as they appeared in the Burgersfort Magistrates Court on 19 March 2014. Four suspects, including two Eskom contractors will make their second appearance in this court. The four were arrested and detained at the Burgersfort Police Station on 26 February for illegal electricity connections. The arrests were the result of a meter auditing sting operation conducted by Eskom in the Burgersfort area. The operation uncovered a high incidence of illegal connections, meter tampering and bypassing as well as ghost vending in the area. A large number of rented accommodation and local businesses were found to be either illegally connected, had tampered with their meters or were using ghost units. Various fines ammounting to more than R950 000 were issued to the culprits. Annother perpetrator nabbed in the sting is the landlord of 22 rented rooms who had illegally connected his premises. He was arrested on the spot and the electricity supply to his premises immediately disconnected. This formed part of Operation Khanyisa, the Eskom led campaign aimed at combating electricity theft. Eskom loses billions of rands in revenue each year as a result of electricity thef, including buying and selling of illegal prepaid electricity vouchers. The power utility is taking a tough stance against this practice and has intensified its efforts to identify customers who buy these illegal units. Customers found to have illegal units on their meters face disconnection, fines and possible criminal prosecution. On 17 March Marumo Marumo, the alleged leader of a syndicate that deals in the sale of illegal prepaid electricy vouchers faced charges of fraud, racketeering and money laundering related to electricity theft int eh Mankweng Magistrates Court. This court appearance came after a three-year-long investigation. The case was remanded and the suspect ordered to appear in court again on 31 July 2014. He was released on R100 000 bail until his next court appearance.

Infrastructure on the way

De Hoop Dam is currently 60% full after plenty of rain in the catchment area. It will however still be a while before everyone will be able to benefit from the new dam as pipelines are still under constructions. Heavy vehicles delivering massive pipes can regularly be seen on the R555.

Slate diggers inactive

A fledgling slate mining business is after years no further than when villagers in Makopung started to take out the resource for reselling. When Platinum Gazette visited the erea last week, it was soon clear that inacessability is one of the problems. The nearest a vehicle can come to the rock is the white vehicle in the bottom photograph. The slate is also dug from the mountain by hand and have to be carried to a vehicle or donkey cart for transport to the tarred road (R 36), a couple of kilometres away. Villagers say yes it is difficult, but we still try and sell some of the slate when people ask.

Dwarsrivier Mine
Dwarsrivier Mine donated 4 laptops to Teacher Ambassadors working in schools surrounding the mines operations. The donation is part of a 24-unit donation done by African Rainbow Minerals and Assore limited to ambassadors in Teach SAs programme. The hand-over took place at Amani Boutique Hotel and Conference Centre in Mashishing (Lydenburg). The gathering of stakeholders for the hand-over resulted in a convenient feedback session from the Teach SA ambassadors, principals and input from Dwarsrivier Mine, ARM and Teach SA. Hunadi Makalela and Promise Mashela are the ambassadors at Ngwaabe Combined School at Ga-Masha. Innocentia Lebelo and Mahori Tiyani are working at Mashishing Secondary School. Through the placement of the Teach SA ambassadors at these schools Dwarsrivier Mine aims to assist in the improvement of mathematics and science from grade 10 to 12. These subjects are essential for further studies, not only into a mining related field, but many other fields as well. The ambassadors related their challenges and achievements as well as the plans they have for 2014 during the event. The principals, Mr Mkhabela (Mashishing Secondary School) and Mr Motene (Ngwaabe Combined School) both thanked Dwarsrivier Mine for the assistance theyve received through the placement of the ambassadors. Mr Remember Mmbengwa from Dwarsrivier Mine encouraged the ambassadors to not only invest in the future of the children they are assisting, but to also further their own studies. He emphasised the importance of the subjects in which the ambassadors are providing assistance, so that minerals beneficiation and other industrial related process that grows the countrys economy can be done in South Africa. An example given was that of manufacturing stainless steel products (e.g. kitchen utensils) in South Africa using our own mined

chrome products and not always export chrome ore to China and other countries and buy kitchen utensils labelled Made in China while the raw material was mined in South Africa. Ms Princess Twala from ARM added that it is important to unlock the potential hidden in each and every human being. She also encouraged the ambassadors to start small, but start with empowerment projects such as art exhibitions and organising clubs such as athletics and cycling which can integrate into existing structures such as the Dwarsrivier Marathon Club. The laptops donated will assist the ambassadors to do their work and to help unlock their own potential as they develop themselves further.

Bow tie on the grille, the Chevrolet Cruze is a smart car. This offering in the market from General Motors South Africa now comes with the same ecotec 1.4 turbo petrol engine as the Opel Astra we drove a few weeks ago. And there the similarities end, but not in a bad way. The Opel we drove came with an automatic gearbox, but in the 1400 Cruze it is married to a six speed manual box driving stick as the Americans say. The manual gearbox proved to be no problem , but it will help if you know stick if you want to get the best of the smooth and lag free engine. And smooth is the word. The cruise we had with the Cruze was smooth, very smooth. The car is superbly comfortable to drive and at low speed can feel a bit wallowy due to the soft suspension (not too fast over the speed bumps), but firms up nicely as you go faster.. And it is quiet, road noise (even at 170 km/h on a bad surface) is not intrusive at all and the suspension weighs up nicely in curves, although it is not a sports car. As a family offering the car is large enough, with a big boot and all the gizmos to keep everybody happy, entertained and safe. One practical example is the USB and MP3 connections in the CD compartment in the centre console, keeping stuff like phones and music players neatly tucked away from the dash. Dirt roads (even bad ones) proved to be no problem to the vehicle as long as you take care not to let the suspension bottom out and the ride is almost serene. A car you can live in with comfort on a long trip. O yes, it also has the new start stop thing to save the planet, but it only kicks in intermittently (not a fault, that is how it works apparently, a number of variables must first agree with each other). The Cruze is an attractive car and we like it very much. Little things that can become big issues in our area such as a full size spare wheel means kudos to the Cruze. Says the

female part of the team at least it has the vanity mirror on the drivers side you always moan about and as a woman I am surprised at the comfort and space. Women tend to only think of marques your dad or brother is in favour of when looking at a new vehicle. The Cruze is a very capable offering in the market. One gripe when you drive stick with six gears and your hand are on the biggish side, you tend to knock the aircon controls deurmekaar. Guess it only needs a bit of practice. The car is available in both the hatchback and sedan models. The 1,4 turbo unit pushes out 103 kW at 4 900 r/min and 200 Nm of torque between 1 850 and 4 900 r/min. Price: R249 600 for the 1.4T LS at Westvaal Steelpoort. Should the cars rivals be worried? Definitely so!

Wind and storm damage

On Monday evening a storm hit Burgersfort and left a path of destruction behind. A strong wind accompanied the heavy downpour of rain. The wind pulled off roofs and flattened hawker stands around Ext. 10 and Ext. 5. The flats in the Khadima Centre (next to the taxi rank) had half its roof blown off and the next morning, water was still ankle deep in some of the hallways.

Some of the hawkers just sat down to try and get over the shock of what happened to their stalls during the night.

Tuesday morning had a slow start as hawkers tried to repair their stalls and residents of flats that had been damaged tried to dry out their homes. Corrugated shade structures had simply been crumpled in the heavy wind.

The Public Protectors Nkandla report release: your views

The Public Protector Thuli Madonsela on Wednesday afternoon released her report on the upgrades made to the private Nkandla home of President Jacob Zuma. The report estimates the cost of the upgrades at his home at R246 million after the initial cost was R27 million. She found that the President and his family unduly benefited from the upgrades and recommends that he pay for the non-security upgrades that include a visitors centre, an amphitheatre, a swimming pool, a cattle kraal, a culvert, a chicken run and extensive paving. The ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe on Thursday said that the party will not ignore or undermine the report. He added that they are relieved that it has been made public. Platinum Gazette asked readers what they think about the report.

Mr Ernest Chilwane and Ms Pamela Fabi said: He needs to pay back! Tax is not for him to pay his house. That is 100% crime if the taxpayers money was used to improve his house. He may be 100% my president but that would be 100% crime. They must make him pay back at least 50% of the money otherwise he is stealing from us.That money can fix all the potholes here in Burgersfort.

Left: Mr Tumedi Sekhukhune said: I welcome the release of the report. I think the President was wrong. He lied and he misled people. He should have taken better responsibility. He must repay and he must be impeached from parliament and as president. He must know what happens at his house. It was public money after all! Right: Mr Bafana Mkhawane and Mr Vincent Serage said: He must pay everything back! People feel cheated by their President. This is a free country, we need to know how our money is spent. We welcome the report.

Ms Sina Nare (left) said: I want to know what happened so it is good the report is out. He must pay back some money. If he used taxpayer money irregularly he must pay it back. I however think he did mislead everyone on purpose. Ms Suzan Mokoena said: I think Zuma must pay the money used back. The taxpayer should only pay for his security. The other improvements on his house he must pay himself. I think Ms Madonsela is right, he did not mislead parliament on purpose.

Mr Michael Mnisi said: I think the policy and procedures of government must lead what happens to Zuma. The State President of South Africa is untouchable. I think we dont have the power to discuss him or entertain any thoughts about what he does. The report is good, but people must respect procedure and the President.

Mr David Mafogo said: He must pay back at least a little bit. The report must be there because we are a country of justice. I think Zuma tried to hide how much he was benefiting.

Mr John Paile said: I want to know what the Public Protector found. Zuma must pay back some of the money for Nkandla. Too many people suffer - they can improve education or health services with that money. People are suffering. That mansion of his is not right.

The police officers spoke to the learners about the dangers of narcotics and also treated them to a display by Quintin, the narcotics dog. Tubatse Masters vs Mashishing United

On Sunday 16 March 2014 the Tubatse Masters visited Mashishing United and played two friendly games in Mashishing. The first game was an easy win for Tubatse Masters. Rellie Mmola and Lucky Lubisi each scored a goal and the final count was 2-0 in favour of Tubatse Masters. In the second game the two teams displayed more aggressive play and created many scoring opportunities. The hosts started the game by putting pressure on the Tubatse Masters team. They scored two goals early in the first half. Later in the first half Pitso Sehlabela, Lucky Lubisi and Mbesuma Mabaso each scored for Tubatse Masters. Half time came with Tubatse Masters still in the lead. In the second half the hosts started strong again and they increased their tally with two more goals. The men from Tubatse did not lose hope and their top goal scorer, Lucky Lubisi leveled the score line to 4-4. The game ended in a draw with both teams having scored 4 goals. Chrome golf course officially open
On Friday the 14th of March Andor Esbach, General Manager of Tubatse Chrome, officially open the Chrome golf course after the recent upgrade of greens and tee boxes. This was done with a round of golf and opening function after the game where all the stakeholders that were involved with the upgrade of the course were invited. Andor thanked everybody for the great effort they put into completing this historical upgrade and had a special word of thanks to Johann Swanepoel, the green keeper. He did all the major construction work. He also thanked Martin van Rooyen for assisting him. Club members were thanked for their patience and urged to make more use of the beautiful golf course. Andor mentioned that Chrome Golf club is one of the top ten 9hole golf courses in South Africa and said he expects it to reach the top position in the next year or two. Even though the greens and tee boxes are not up to the standard Johann Swanepoel would like it to be, the course is very playable and all members and visitors are welcome to come and enjoy the new greens. The rain of the past few days was very good for the course and the Club is very thankful for it. The winners of the day were Andre Botha and Johan Smit. The Grand opening of the course will take place on the 29th of March and all members are invited to come and join in the fun and play a round of golf. (Information: Willem Montgomery. Samancor runners going Om-Die-Dam

On Saturday last week the Samancor Marathon Club participated in the Om-Die-Dam Ultra Marathon. Fanie Matshipa came in at position 8 with a time of 3:05. Surprise Latudi Makofane took position 12 with a time of 3:13. The results for other athletes were: Gift Kelehe 3:17, Katlego Magabane 3:25, Johannes Mogoane 3:35.
