New businesses coming into the downtown area are going to be the rst faced with following the guidelines of the new Downtown Overlay District Bylaw. When a new business opens in the downtown area, the rst thing the owner should do is head to the town ofce and le an application for a development permit if they are planning to change the use of the property. They should also le for a signage permit. Before they do anything they should be coming in to talk. Thats not just the downtown, before youre doing anything construction-wise, or changing a use you should be coming in and talking to the town, said Deputy Chief Administrative Ofcer for the Town of Strathmore Linda Nelson. Most things require either a development permit, or a building permit. Some things dont but it is best to check ahead of time. The Downtown Overlay District Bylaw species that the town has architectural controls over the way buildings will look. The application (for a permit) would come forward and from there we would set up a meeting with the downtown design review committee, said Nelson. (We would) review the application and make sure that it meets all of the criteria and specications within the Downtown Overlay District Bylaw. It is not a strict bylaw, a lot of times people think that a bylaw is restrictive, but sometimes it can be the exact opposite, it can give you more options and it can help generate those ideas. The underlying zoning is still there, so you still have those requirements, but what the town has done is added additional things that a business owner or a developer can do. The design committee can make recommendations and suggestions but they cannot approve a permit, and they cannot attach conditions to a permit; that is up to the development ofcer. Winter Carnival all fun and games

Friday afternoon, March 14, saw the children from Brentwood School participating in outdoor activities for their Winter Carnival. Kids had to punch cards for the events that included things like fishing, tug of war and other team activities. It was a great way to get rid of some of the winter blues.

#1 Hoops returns for a 4th season

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter The #1 Hoops program is back and is currently accepting registration for its fourth season. Shantelle Gieck started the program. Basketball has given her a lot over the years. She has coached and played for almost 15 years, and so she wanted to give back to the community, and let the kids know that anyone can play the sport, no matter their skill level. There are ve coaches for each hour-and-a-half session and the program focuses a lot on one-on-one. All of my coaches have basketball backgrounds, I make sure to have that too. We have some unique things that other programs do not have, said Gieck. I think we not only teach the basic skills of basketball but also the etiquette, rules, and teamwork is a big thing. (We) strive to show that each child that loves the game is allowed to play without limitations. Theres lots of game scenarios, and we also do lots of drills but fun drills. The registration deadline for the program is April 15. Gieck said they are currently looking to ll another 16 spots for Grade 4-7 session, and 21 spots are still open in the Kindergarten-to-Grade 3 session. #1 Hoops begins on May 6, and will be held each Tuesday night at the Crowther Memorial Junior High School gym. All of the participants are given reversible jerseys, a basketball and a water bottle. To nd out more or to register, contact Shantelle Gieck at 403-6603896.

Some of the general purposes of the bylaw are: to encourage adaptive re-use of abandoned, vacant or underutilized buildings or structures where appropriate; to allow for a mix of new land use s that are appropriate to both the needs of the community and the scale of the surrounding neighbourhoods; to maintain a consistent high level of design quality though the district; and to build upon the historic development patterns in the existing downtown area to create an attractive, vibrant, walk-able and economically successful downtown. Cabin Fever tour starts in Strathmore

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Musicians Saskia and Darrel are returning to Strathmore this April in an attempt to help us lose the winter blues. Strathmore is the rst stop on the Cabin Fever Tour featuring Allen Christie and The Great Plains (Saskia and Darrel). Were going to call it the Cabin Fever Tour because people are sick of the snow, and we want to cheer them up a little bit with some good old folk music, said Saskia. Christie has been touted as a modern day troubadour. It has been said he has perfected his addictive blend of roots, country and folk music to create a sound that is unmistakably Albertan. Saskia and Darrel or the Great Plains, are known as the sweethearts of the prairies. They toured for a number of years with Gary Fjellgaard and Valdy. They are considered true Canadiana, offering songs rich with a bluegrass, folksy, Celtic avour. The duo love coming to Alberta and are excited to have Strathmore as the rst stop of the new tour. Love it, I love that southern Alberta attitude. I love the people there, theyre friendly theyre kind. We have always really enjoyed it, said Saskia. Weve got some new songs, some new Alberta songs. Were working on a new album that we wont have ready 1014 Westridge Road, Strathmore AB

If you have a child that swallowed something poisonous, call your local poison control centre right away. Have the poison container with you and listen carefully to the questions you will be asked: what was swallowed, how much, what the container label says and if the child has had anything to eat or drink since the event. Speed is of the essence so listen carefully and act as directed. There seems to be some mixed signals about drinking alcohol while pregnant. Some stories have said it was OK in moderation but the best advice on this one is to not drink any alcohol while pregnant. Many thousands of children in Canada are born yearly with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome which causes a range of problems from physical disabilities to brain damage. Pregnancy and alcohol do not mix. Heres a suggestion about alcohol and pregnancy: The decision to have a child is usually a mutuallyagreed decision between husband and wife. They both want the healthiest child possible. To this end, the husband can support his wife by also abstaining from alcohol for the term of the pregnancy. Giving blood
A successful blood drive was held on March 7 by a former Rockyford ringette team in honour of their former coach Dwayne Marshman. Marshman was instrumental in bringing ringette to Rockyford. In 2012 he lost his battle to Mantel Cell Lymphoma. Karen Koester, a member of the Rockyford Ringers ringette team, got her blood taken surrounded by her teammates. By the end of the evening the clinic had seen 139 donors walk through the doors out of the 178 who had booked appointments. The target was to collect 120 units of blood, and by the end of the night 117 units had been collected, falling just shy of the target. Back: Natalie Gregory (l-r) Nicole Robinson and Kim Salt. Speech from the Throne presents focus for 2014

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor The Alberta throne speech opened the legislature on March 3 with Retired Colonel Donald S. Ethell, the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, enthusiastically highlighting the accomplishments of current government, in spite of the many challenges faced in the past year. Since 2012, your government has made tremendous progress on all three fronts, despite the challenges our province faced from the worst ood in Canadian history, and the deep discount Alberta receives for its oil and gas, said Ethell. But neither natures wrath, nor economic fury stood in the way of your governments plan to build an even better quality of life for Albertans. He named a three-part program as the new phase of the Build Alberta Plan and the governments focus for 2014. He saw this phase as dealing with the increased challenges of population growth, which he directly correlated to a healthy economy. Today marks the beginning of the next phase of the Building Alberta Plan, focused on meeting Albertas enormous growth head-on, while having the courage to invest in innovation and in future generations, to set our province up for long-term success, said Ethell. He said government will expand the Results-Based Budgeting review process currently in use and hold spending below population and ination growth until 2016. They would be using savings, namely interest generated from the Heritage Trust fund, to create endowments for innovation in agriculture, social issue research and scholarships for trade and technology systems. They will fund the building of the Lougheed Leadership Institute and create the Alberta Institute for Research and Commercialization. Goals to support municipal governments were to complete the Municipal Government Act review, nalize the Edmonton and Calgary Charters, renew MSI and Green Trip long term funding, and continue ood mapping and community mitigation planning. They hope to aid farmers by ghting against unfair labelling rules in the US and getting better rail services for grain shipments. Promises under Health care included: development of aging in place programs, support for in-home care and improved seniors care, with consideration to allowing continuing care facilities to be built on provincial land. They would support the Alberta Wellness Strategy, newborn infant screening and child mental health programs. More Family Care Centres will be opened. Education will see student-centered curriculums with a focus on numeracy and basic literacy, replacement of provincial achievement tests with student learner assessments, and a long view in planning taken for higher education investments and trade skills development. They will support distance learning opportunities. Business and nonprot partnerships will be developed to mentor young workers. They promise to continue building 50 new schools and modernizing 70 more over the next three years keeping class sizes low with over 86,000 new spaces. A new dedicated pipeline training facility will be built, to train more heavy equipment operators, and those who work in pipeline construction and land reclamation. On the child welfare front, they have committed to changes in the child intervention system, based on roundtable recommendations of 2013, with support extended for children in care until they reach age 24. Justice system and policing commitments were to see more consolidated efforts like I-Trac, which brings together police, specialized court ofcers and counselling workers for Albertans facing domestic violence. They support immediate protection for victims and punishment for offenders in those situations. The development of diversied domestic energy and alternative and renewable energy frameworks, leading to a market-based electricity system, will be encouraged; as well as development of a northern forestry industry and pushing through pipelines like the Keystone XL will be focused on in the future. Ethell said the government will welcome foreign investment in 2014 and advocate for a Canada wide Free Trade zone. They support an open skies policy for airports, building on the work being done by both the Calgary and Edmonton airports. The province will encourage trade agreements like the energy agreements signed with China, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and the agriculture agreement signed with States of Meghalaya and Punjab in India this January. What makes all of this possible, indeed what your government has deemed job one, is an unrelenting focus on selling Alberta to the world, said Ethell. He concluded that the government would always rise above the fray and work together with Albertans to build a better province, focusing on what truly matters to Albertans.

Securing free trade with Korea

KEVIN SORENsON, M.P., CROWFOOT Parliamentary Report Again, many constituents are talking about the prospects of a new international trade agreement for Canada this time with Korea. Alberta stands to benet signicantly from preferred access to the South Korean market. South Korea is already Albertas fth-largest export destination, with exports from 2010 to 2012 worth an annual average of approximately $628.2 million. The Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement will provide Canadian businesses and workers with unprecedented access to Korea, which has an annual GDP of $1.1 trillion and a population of 50 million people. This is Canadas rst free trade agreement with an Asian market and it is forecast to create thousands of new jobs in Canada and provide Canadian businesses and workers with a gateway to Asia, enhancing our global competitiveness. It will also level the playing eld for Canadian companies competing with Koreas other trading partners, including the United States and the European Union, who already have free trade agreements with Korea. Our riding is strongly based in agriculture and we are one of the chief benefactors of free trade agreements, including the one with Europe that our Conservative government reached last November. The Canada-Korea FTA not only serves us in the short-term but like the European agreement, it will also help us attract and cultivate the next generation of farmers. Expanding Canadas trade in the modern global economy is about the biggest incentive we can offer future farmers and ranchers in our region since the years of the wheat boom. Upon coming into force, the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement will eliminate tariffs on almost all of Albertas key exports and provide access to new opportunities in the South Korean market. Exporters in these sectors will also benet from other Agreement provisions that will improve conditions for exportsprovisions, for example, that ease regulatory barriers, reinforce intellectual property rights and ensure more transparent rules for market access. Overall, Alberta has a lot to gain from the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement. Specically, the top benets for Alberta include: enhanced market access for many agricultural and agri-food products, including wheat, beef, pork and canola oil; duty-free access for industrial goods, including metals, aircraft parts and chemicals; improved access for professional services; predictable, non-discriminatory rules for Canadian investors; improved access to South Koreas government procurement market; and, strong provisions on non-tariff measures, backed up by fast and effective dispute settlement provisions. For example, South Korean tariffs will be eliminated on: wheat, from a current rate of up to three per cent; wheat our, from a current rate of 4.2 per cent; and certain bakery products, from a current rate of eight per cent; rened and crude canola oil, from a current rate of ve per cent; un-roasted barley malt, from a current rate of up to 269 per cent; beef and most processed beef products, from a current rate of up to 72 per cent; and, beef fats/ tallow, from a current rate of eight per cent. Martin Unrau, Past President, Canadian Cattlemens Association says, for the past few years, Canadas key beef competitor, the United States, has enjoyed an increasing tariff advantage owing from its FTA with South Korea, and Australia is poised to do likewise through its recent agreement with Korea. Their gain has been our loss. This announcement means Canadian beef will be able to once again compete for meaningful access in the South Korean market. In the March 14 edition of the Strathmore Times in the Fire Hall Purchases New Truck article Captain Jason McEwing is quoted as saying, ventilate a structure to power fans which clear out smoke, CO2. This quote is not accurate. When addressing council McEwing stated CO, which is carbon monoxide, not CO2. It is important to note the difference between CO2 and CO. Doubling Down on Debt: Budget 2014

JASON HALE Strathmore/Brooks MLA The numbers are in and theyre not pretty. The PCs have tabled their seventh straight decit budget with Budget 2014. Whats worse, theyre taking on debt at levels Albertans havent seen since the 1990s. By 2016, Alberta taxpayers will be on the hook for $22 billion. Servicing that debt will cost $820 million a year. Thats $820 million that wont be spent on building new schools, reducing health care wait times, or policing our cities and neighbourhoods. We all remember the dark days of the early 1990s. Crushing debt severely hampered our ability to deliver services, and it took years of painful cuts to eliminate the debt and get back on our feet. The PCs seem intent on taking us back down this path. The fact is, the PCs have long since abandoned the goal of a balanced budget. Rather than prioritize their spending on core services by eliminating waste, they continue to let the spending taps run without regard for future generations. The PCs also think Albertans can be tricked. They have craftily broke the budget into separate components to conceal the debt and try to sell their budgets to Albertans as balanced. Even the brightest minds have had trouble deciphering the real numbers. But they all agree on one thing: Budget 2014 means more debt, more burdensome interest payments and less funding for schools, hospitals, long-term care centres and roads in the long run. And without a sound scal plan for balancing the books, it also means the threat of more cuts to front line services like education and health care. Despite record revenues of $44.4 billion, the PCs plan to take on an additional $5.1 billion in debt this year. Thats $14 million per day, $585,000 every hour, and a staggering $160 each minute. In contrast, before Budget 2014 came down, Wildrose proposed 16 common sense solutions that would have put Alberta on the path to a real balanced budget, paid down debt, saved for the future and protected front line services. For instance, Wildrose would save $450 million by ending corporate welfare and $900 million within four years by nding efciencies in the bureaucracy. We would limit bonuses for senior public sector executives and managers to save $35 million each year and all future severance packages for

government executives and politically appointed staff to save $5 million annually. We could also save $6 million annually by eliminating the 10 under-performing associate ministers and by reducing the number of ministers to 16. Wildrose would never seek savings by gutting front line services like education, health care or supports for persons with developmental disabilities. By contrast, the PCs have only sought savings by gouging our front line workers and cutting the services our most vulnerable rely on. There are clearly savings to be found. If the PCs havent found any savings yet, its because they refuse to look. Albertans need new schools, hospitals and upgraded roads. Building needs to be a priority for the long-term prosperity of the province. This will be harder and harder to do as interest payments become more and more burdensome under the PC plan of more and more debt. We hope you will take the time to review the Wildrose 2014 Budget recommendations at wildrose.ca/feature/wildrose-releases-2014-budget-recommendations.

When the Mountain Boy becomes the prairie dog (thanks James)!
PAT FULE Fule for Thought By the time you read this (maybe thats wishful thinking!), St. Patricks Day will have come and gone. People will be having green coloured foods and treats, and some wearing their best green outts to avoid being pinched. A lot of people think that Im Irish because of my rst name, but if youve read earlier columns, you know my parents didnt even have a name for me when I was born. So I got named after the Irish doctor who delivered me! For your whole life to get called Patty or Paddy, and given extra pinches because kids think youre Irish loses its fun factor after a while! Even my 80 year old Slovenian uncle calls me every St. Patricks Day! Ive had to remind him, uh, you know Im Hungarian-Slovenian, right, Unc? Oh well, the calls always nice, even if Im not Irish. It did get me thinking of my background, how I got to where I am, and specically how I came to stay here in Strathmore. Not to get political, but Strathmore has denitely gotten prettier over the last 30 years. There are more trees, parks, and pathways than ever before. But in May of 1983 when I got interviewed for a teaching position at Samuel Crowther School, it was not the gem its becoming now! Now before you long time residents get too mad, I came from Canmore, and thats a lot different than here! In fact, on the interview day, I was a half hour early, so I thought Id drive around the town. I thought maybe I could refer to something I saw, if it came up in the interview, and I wanted to look around. Driving east down Main Street, I was absolutely shocked. Back in 1983, Main Street was not the most attractive street in town! I drove down it and up the next one, and wasnt quite sure what Id just seen. My parents were off work that day, so I actually called home from a pay phone (you remember those) to tell them about Strathmore. You wont believe this, Dad! The buildings are all old and kind of run down looking. They put the Main Street on a hill! Ive never seen anything like this! Yeah, Im still after the job, it might be a great starting point for me, I told him. Starting point indeed, its now 31 years later and Im still here! Deb and I had opportunities to go back and teach in Canmore, but we always talked ourselves out of it. Now, its way too early to campaign, but it was the amazing people who kept us here! Strathmores residents still have that old fashioned down to earth friendliness, that I dont think has even weakened over the last 30 years! Its denitely been a great place for us to live and raise our family! However, in 1983, I was still totally unsure. I was told 90 applied for the Jr./Sr. high job, ten of us were interviewed, and I got the position! I know, this is where some of you may be saying what happened to the other nine? Its too late, 30 years have gone by no backsies its kind of late to get rid of me now! So, the next night (Saturday) the superintendent called me in Canmore to offer the job. I think I cut him off with a yes even before the sentence got very far! I do remember my mom screaming when she realized her son was going to be a teacher. My family is all from Europe and I was the rst to ever get a University degree! Okay, sure, one of mine is a PE degree, but like I said, no backsies! So, my parents came out with me later the next week to look for accommodations. There werent many from which to choose! Back then, the old King Edward Hotel was still going strong, with a Chinese restaurant attached. Just next to that was an ancient butcher shop with a one bedroom apartment above. We went to look at it, and once again, I was stunned. My dad said, I think you take it, Pat. Not much in town. This one be good. Uh Dad I know youre from the old country, and you were a POW in WWII, and lived through a lot of bad stuff, but that doesnt mean your youngest kid has to! Youre not gonna make me live here, are you? Vy not you sometink special? (My dad had an accent and was pretty blunt!) No, but I think theres got to be something a little less Prison Campish, I replied. Luckily Mom was with me and began to discipline my dad, she got me out of that one! We nally found a bachelor apartment in a brand new Chinook III, and I was ready to start livin the dream! Yup, here I was, a Canmore mountain kid living on the Prairie. That rst pay cheque I cleared $1,300 and my rent was $400! Now 31 years later, Im still here and I really have no regrets Strathmore is a great town, but I still wonder why Main Streets on a hill!

MEMORIES OF CARSELAND BY DON VANDER VELDE
My memories of Carseland is going with my dad to the butcher shop to get meat from Bonitz`s Butcher Shop. Eldon`s dad ran the shop then with Eldon helping out. Henry [Harry as we knew him], Eldon`s dad would always give us kids a wiener as a treat. The hardware store was next door, run by Earl Briscoe, later by Harold Hvingelby Senior. Always a fascinating place with stuff stacked to the ceiling. If you wanted glass cut, it could be done there. At one time there were three machinery dealers in town. Wood Downey sold Cockshutt and Bill and Dale Cole sold Massey Harris. There was a two story brick building on the vacant lot south of the present mall. There was a coffee shop in it and I believe it had rooms up above. There was a barber shop and I believe a pool hall north of the brick building ran by Sid Brown. White table cloths always adorned the tables. There was also a ve and dime store, later run by Bill and Eva Adams. This was a place to go to at noon hour for a pop and chocolate bar. On the north corner was what was called the ``Red and White store run by Helen and Dale Cole. They had cold storage lockers which they rented out to the public to keep their frozen meat and vegetables. On main street on the East side there was a hip roof barn where the church now stands plus Bill McCormick`s service station. A Catholic Church was to the north. The old community hall stood where the new hall is. Many dances were attended with Ruby Fields playing or Gerry`s [my dad] Orchestra. Curling games in the old curling rink kept us kids wondering what went on in the snake pit`` up stairs. A row of grain elevators stood tall on the south side of the street. East of these, Bill and Dale Cole had an Esso bulk fuel business. Wayne Downey built a rodeo arena on the south side of the tracks where Moenchs and the Stickman presently are. The Downey, Christensen and Ostrom families as well as, Davey MacDonald, Lee Philips and Roy Groves being some of the contestants. The train coming through town and stopping at the station was always a big event for us kids to see. Crossing the track coming into town, Wood Downey ran a service station and mechanical service business. Wood could weld or x anything. On the west side, there was a smaller storage shed. A bucking barrel [representing a bucking bull] was put up, which we would ride during the noon hour. The Canadian passenger train seemed to always come through at this time. It was neat to be riding the barrel at this time so we could ``show off a bit. On the north west corner across from Wood Downey`s garage, Alice Downey had a small grocery store. Alice was my nurse at the Holy Cross Hospital when I was born in 1945. She was always available to offer advice and nursing care when needed. I`ll always be proud to be a part of Carseland. I know Carseland will grow in the future and I am honoured to represent Carseland to the best of my ability. Thank you.

Maximizing carbon credit prot

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Carbon Credit Solutions (CCSI) launched a new, pioneering Carbon Bank earlier this month. CCSI, a leader in the eld of carbon aggregation, is allowing their clients to bank their carbon credits for future sale. The Carbon Bank was created as a response to the increase in the price of carbon credits in Alberta. The initiative is the rst, and the only one, of its kind in Alberta. A carbon credit is a tradable certicate that represents the right to emit one tonne of carbon dioxide, or other greenhouse gasses with a carbon dioxide equivalent. Regulatory changes in Alberta have reduced our clients ability to prot from carbon credits and we want to give them the opportunity to maximize the return on their credits, said President of CCSI Alastair Handley in a press release. Once our clients credits are registered they can choose to sell their credits immediately or set them aside to be sold at a later date, and if all goes well a much higher price. The Carbon Bank is the next step in our mission to create value for our clients. The Carbon Bank is a non-interest trust account for carbon credits. The bank will hold the credits until the price goes up, at which point they will be sold, providing the off-setter with more money for their credits. The press release further stated that this is a tremendous advantage for farmers, renewable energy producers, and companies committed to reducing their energy efciency as carbon prices are set to rise in the next 12- 24 months following the Government of Albertas 40/40 proposal. The 40/40 proposal requires major carbon emitters to reduce per-barrel emissions by 40 per cent and a $40-per-tonne payment should they exceed the limit. Currently, large nal emitters that purchase carbon credits are holding on to them in anticipation of the price increase. Through the Carbon Bank CCSI aims to give clients that supply credits the same opportunity to benet from this market. CCSI produces credits for clients who have taken steps at reducing greenhouse gases, either by decreasing emissions, or by removing them from the atmosphere. The credits are created in accordance to methodologies approved by Alberta Environment, and must meet stringent standards of the Alberta government. The Carbon Bank is available to all CCSI clients. To learn more go to www. carboncreditsolutions.ca.

Strathmore High keeps up with 3D technology

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Technology is quickly evolving all around us, and it is up to the teachers in our schools to make sure our kids are keeping up with the changes. Strathmore High School (SHS) is trying to keep up with some of the advances in technology. At the end of the 2013 school year they purchased two Solidoodle 3 3D printing machines. Ed Eberts Design Studies class has been assigned one, and Art teacher Brandy Roberts also has one available to use, though both are currently in Eberts class. Over the years Eberts has become more of a multimedia teacher, taking on the design class last year. The reason why I really wanted one is I thought teaching this class with Design Studies about designing things, wouldnt it be cool if they could then print it? said Eberts. Only four students who were in Grade 10 design class last year have followed through into the Grade 11 class. This year they are getting the opportunity to actually work with the printers and create different designs. Matt Sandum, Logan Blakney, Jared Dougan and Braden Burton are the rst students at SHS to take the new course. The rst year of using Inventor we didnt have the 3D printers, it was cool just designing stuff, but now that you can design it and then make it, its a lot cooler, said Blakney. Its interesting, you can do it yourself and not rely on somebody else making it for you. The four boys are excited at the potential the 3D printing has in all aspects of life. They would all like to make working gears on the printer, and are currently working on making brackets so they can build their own Plexiglas box around the printer to help keep heat in. A lot of this stuff you can just download it off the Internet and then print it out. So there might be something you like, and if you nd someone else who made it, you can print it, said Eberts. The future is kind of cool, you might not have to buy a product, and you might just buy a le and print it yourself. Eberts explained that a 3D printer is sort of like a combination between a glue gun and a printer except your glue is plastic. The nozzle goes back and forth like a printer, sprays down a layer of plastic and then the table drops down and it goes again across what it has done, which is why there are some grooves in the nished product. You can make your own design, and when you are done you save it as a le, which can be sent to the printer. Then the computer program does the slicing, learns how many layers and the path it has to follow to spit out the plastic, and then the printer makes it into an actual

Strathmore High Schools 2013/2014 Grade 11 students are the first ones to use the new 3D printers the school purchased for the design class. Above: Logan Blakney (l-r), Matt Sandum, Ed Eberts, Braden Burton and Jared Dougan.

object. The program SHS uses is Autodesk, and the students are learning on Inventor, which is a digital prototyping program. There have been a few failures as they learn how to use that machine, and there have been some interesting tips learned through watching YouTube videos, like spraying hairspray on the glass to help the plastic stick. The rst thing they printed was a little blue bunny head. What we want to do is we want to start making our own iPhone cases with our schools logo and then give them away, said Eberts. Art teacher Brandy Roberts is excited about the potential the printer has with her art class. She would love to use it for casting one day but plans to mostly use it for jewelry for now. As soon as I saw the rst 3D printed thing I thought thats just another material we could work with. I think the fact that it can be 100 per cent original, it can be a component to something that they have already created in another medium, theres no end to what they (can create), said Roberts. I think almost every department can use it in some way if you have the time and the accessibility to it. The technology is changing fast, said Roberts. Now 3D scanners are being made, where you can put on object on the scanner, it scans and then will print that object on the 3D printer. Windows is even offering built-in 3D printing drivers in its computers now. Its funny because it is not really that new anymore, its just now becoming a more public, and more accessible, before you had to be a little bit more nerdy to know how to use that stuff, now its accessible to everyone, said Roberts. There are a lot of schools now considering buying one. Its not too farfetched to think that one day everyone will have a 3D printer in their home. There are a number of different 3D printing applications, and the possibilities seem endless. I hope that some of them think of it as a career or think about using it on

the farm or wherever. You could print out a tool that you need or if something breaks on the machine you dont have to run in to order one, said Eberts about his hopes for his design class.

I would like to see us offering the Autodesk certication so somebody in high school could get the certicate and be certied by Autodesk for their program.

Test Your Animals Protect Your Industry Help Maintain Confidence In Canadian Beef
You can support the Canadian beef and cattle industry by participating in the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) surveillance program. The program helps to maintain consumer confidence in Canadian beef. The BSE surveillance program14033CC1 targets animals that are most at risk for having BSE. This includes cattle over the age of 30 months that are dead, dying, diseased, down or cattle showing signs of BSE such as nervous or aggressive behavior. You can participate in the program by contacting your veterinarian, your local CFIA district office or by calling 1-866-400-4244. Your veterinarian or a CFIA inspector will come to your farm to assess the animal and, if appropriate, collect a brain tissue sample from the animal for testing. You will receive $75 to help cover carcass disposal costs and $100 for veterinary services. For more information call

JOHN GODSMAN Times Contributor The Blokland surname originated in Holland in the 1800s. Rocky was born in Holland on April 6,1951 and six months later his parents moved to Canada with their family, which included Rocky, his brother Emile and sister Winnie arriving here in Nov 1951. As a youngster he saw quite a bit of Canada, as his father who was a baker moved from town to town, looking for a bakery to acquire. They lived in Timmins, Brandon and Yellowknife, before reaching Stettler in 1965, where his father purchased the bakery. It was here that his given name of Rokus was changed to its current form of Rocky. During his travels he attended Elementary School in Brandon, Man., Junior High School in Ye l l o w k n i f e NWT, and Senior High School in Stettler, before going to NAIT for his Journeyman Bakers Certicate. As Rockys grandfather and father had both been bakers before him, it was only natural he would follow in their footsteps. Ellies (Conway) family originated in Belfast, Northern Ireland and came to Ontario in the early 1900s. She was born on Aug. 19, 1949 and

ally isnt much time left to get involved in community activities, but as you know Rocky is now in his second term as a town councillor, a position he thoroughly enjoys. Both Rocky and Ellie are pleased now that they made the decision to open and operate their bakery/cafe/catering business here. They love the town, the people, and the amenities, and really appreciate the tremendous support shown to their family business. They also enjoy its closeness to Calgary, the U.S., and B.C. Their long-term plans are to continue operating the business as long as health permits, then retire and stay in Strathmore. The biggest change theyve seen in the past 14 years is the population explosion. When they arrived, there were 6,800 people living here. Now it has almost doubled. Further changes are on the horizon, which will enhance Strathmores position as a place to live in the future.

She, too, moved around the country and was living in Bonnyville, Alta. when she met and married Rocky in 1983. They raised two sons, two daughters and have 11 grandchildren ranging in age from four to 14. Rocky and Ellie visited this part of the province in 1999, looking for a bakery to acquire, and they kept coming back to Strathmore, where the bakery was for sale. Both made the decision that this was the right place to live, so they bought the bakery, and opened Rockys Bakery on Feb. 1, 2000. As it is open six days per week, there re-

Explore unique cake flavor combinations

A wedding cake is the piece de resistance of the wedding ceremony. Guests anxiously await the unveiling of the cake near the end of the festivities. Modern cakes are showpieces grander in scale than in years past. As bakers and confectioners hone their skills with fondant, buttercream and gum paste even further, the results are often impressive, awe-inspiring cake designs. While the look of a wedding cake is certainly important, cakes should not only look good, but taste good as well. Vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream frosting was once the gold standard. But todays couples are being more adventurous with their wedding cakes and winning rave reviews from guests along the way. The vast scope of wedding cake flavor choices available to brides and grooms is astonishing. Options may range from the traditional to something adventurous and daring. Keeping in mind that couples will need to please the masses, finding a compromise between plain vanilla and a mocha-chilecoconut surprise is essential. Otherwise, they risk an unpopular flavor and a lot of wasted, expensive cake. Some couples shy away from more adventurous cakes because they fear something chocolately or not white in color will not be well suited to a wedding reception. Such couples should keep in mind that any flavor of cake can be hidden beneath layers of pearly white fondant or royal icing. Therefore, the sky is the limit with regard to flavor combinations. Those who might want to veer from tradition can consider these clever cake combinations. * Lemon cake with vanilla buttercream: Lemons are tart, juicy and refreshing, helping to cleanse the palate after a rich meal. Lemon cake, with its summery feel, is tailor-made for summer weddings. The flavor is popular enough to appeal to many, but just a little different to add an unexpected zip of flavor. * Chocolate cake with chocolate ganache and mocha filling: True chocoholics will be hard-pressed to resist such a decadent flavor profile. Chocolate can be sweet and satisfying and a welcome change from the vanilla cakes commonly served. For traditionalists, the cake can be covered with a white chocolate ganache. Or couples can ask that the cake be adorned with white sugar roses for an eye-appealing contrast. Chocolate cakes covered with autumn hued flowers go over well at fall weddings. * Red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting: Red velvet cake was once a regionally specific staple, but now has grown steadily in popularity across the country. Red velvet has quickly become the new classic, as its vibrant red coloring offers a shock of something different, while the flavor is mild for those who are not comfortable taking risks. The richness and creaminess of cream cheese is irresistible. * White cake with chocolate mousse: Couples who want a bit of chocolate but do not want to be overwhelmed can select a white cake that is filled with light and rich chocolate mousse. Its the perfect blend of vanilla and chocolate for guests who enjoy both. * Variety tiers: Those who cannot settle on just one flavor can have different flavors on each tier of their cakes. This gives guests some flavorful variety and enables them to pick their favorite flavor combination. Brides- and grooms-to-be who have specific flavors in mind can ask their bakers to include two cupcakes with the wedding cake. Then the couple can enjoy their own mini cakes while the rest of the guests enjoy a more classic cake. In addition, an assortment of cupcakes in lieu of one cake can give guests the opportunity to sample several different flavors. Cakes are a part of many special events, but few cakes are fawned over as much as wedding cakes. Couples can spice things up by choosing a nontraditional flavor combination.

How to calm those last-minute jitters

Brides- and grooms-to-be are often nervous when the day they will tie the knot finally arrives. The realization that months and months of planning and anticipation are finally about to come to a head often inspires some jitters in the days leading up to the wedding. But the following are a few ways couples can calm those nerves in the hours leading up to the moment they have devoted so much time and effort to planning since becoming engaged. * Get a good nights rest. Couples should prioritize a good nights sleep the night before they are set to walk down the aisle. Make your last night as an unmarried couple an early night so you will look your best and have plenty of energy on your big day, which will no doubt start early and end late. A good nights sleep can go a long way toward ensuring youre in a good mood as you handle a full slate of responsibilities on your wedding day. * Spend time with family and friends. Chances are your closest friends and family members are playing significant roles in your wedding, and spending time with them is a great way to keep your nerves in check while having a fun time before, during and after the ceremony. * Dont be afraid to delegate responsibilities. In spite of months of planning, couples will still have a to-do list come their wedding days. If such a list is overwhelming, brides- and grooms-to-be should not be afraid to delegate some of the tasks on their lists. Bridesmaids and groomsmen can no doubt handle any outstanding tasks that dont require any input from the bride or groom. * Relax as the ceremony draws nearer. As the start time for the ceremony approaches, couples about to tie the knot should take time to sit down and relax. Once their hair and makeup is finished, brides-to-be should sit down and exhale or arrange for the photographer to snap some fun prewedding photos with their bridesmaids. Grooms-to-be can do the same with their groomsmen, sharing a few lastminute jokes to ensure everyone is relaxed and ready to go before taking their places.

Did you know?

Symbolic gestures are commonplace during wedding ceremonies. The exchange of rings, stomping on a glass and lighting of candles are each among the various traditions associated with different faiths. Couples who would like to try something a bit different can opt for pouring sand. Choose two different colored sands and decorative vessels that can hold the sand until a special time in the ceremony. You also will need another large, clear container that will contain the sand once it is poured. A glass vase or heart-shaped vessel works well. To symbolize the joining of two lives together, both the bride and groom can take one of the colors of sand and begin pouring them together into the larger container. The ribbons of sand will join and meld together, much as the couples separate lives will now become one. The finished sand art can be kept on a mantle as a remembrance of the wedding day for years to come

How to stay energized throughout your wedding day

A couples wedding day is the culmination of months and months of planning. For most, it is one of the most memorable, magical days of their lives, filled with fond moments of time spent with close friends and family. As enjoyable as a wedding can be, most brides and grooms who have already tied the knot can attest that a wedding is a long, often tiring day. It is very easy for energy levels to wane. To ensure you have enough energy to last through to the final good-bye of the evening, follow these suggestions to remain energized. * Recognize your wedding day is a very long day. Its possible to rise quite early in the morning to begin prepping with makeup, hair styles, wardrobe and more. If the party is an evening reception, it could last until the wee hours of the morning. You may find yourself up for nearly 24 hours, when the cameras will be flashing and the video rolling throughout. Naturally, youll want to look your best throughout. * Get a good nights sleep the night before. Get to bed early the night before so you will get ample sleep and look rested. It is understandable that nerves and excitement may get the best of you and make it difficult to fall asleep. If you often grow anxious and struggle to fall asleep before big events, talk to your doctor prior to the wedding to ask if you can be prescribed a onetime-only sleeping pill that will ensure you get to sleep promptly. Do not take this medication with alcohol, and be sure to take it only if you can get a full 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Otherwise you may experience medicine hangover. * Enjoy a hearty breakfast. At breakfast on the morning of your wedding, consume a combination of carbohydrates and protein. The carbs will provide the initial burst of energy you need to get going, and the protein will keep you

feeling full. A combination of whole wheat toast, fresh fruit and Greek yogurt makes for a filling start to the day. * Stay hydrated. Although drinking a lot of water can result in more frequent trips to the bathroom -- which can be cumbersome for brides wearing their gowns -- it is essential to stay hydrated. Dehydration can result in headaches, weakness and dizziness and may make you feel cranky. Be sure to consume water throughout the day. * Pack some snacks. The time between breakfast and the cocktail hour of a wedding may be significant. In your wedding survival kit, be sure to pack some easy snacks to eat. Trail mix can be nibbled for a boost of energy, and a banana can take the edge off of hunger pangs. Avoid anything messy that can drip onto clothing or get stuck in your teeth. Arrange to have snacks stowed in the limousine or another mode of transportation so that you can refuel on the way to the ceremony or in transit to the reception. * Dont overdo it with caffeine. It may be tempting to lean on an energy drink or a super-size cup of coffee to give you the boost you need. But caffeine is only a temporary fix. After the effects of the caffeine wear off, you could find yourself more tired than before and crash at an inopportune time during the day. Instead, a brisk walk outdoors may recharge your batteries. Afterward, time spent on the dance floor enjoying the reception will likely stimulate some adrenaline to keep you going. * Eat dinner. When family is beckoning and the photographer needs to get yet another pose, it is easy to skip dinner. Be firm with your decision to enjoy your meal. After all, you paid for it and it should not go to waste. Besides, sitting down to dinner enables you to rest and absorb the atmosphere of the wedding. * Continue to drink plenty of water throughout the night. Alcoholic beverages may be flowing, but too many spirits can compromise your energy levels. Be sure to balance the booze with hydrating fluids, such as water or juice. Weddings take up the entire day, and it can be easy to succumb to a lack of energy as the day progresses. But by heeding a few tips, its possible to remain in top form throughout the entire wedding day.

calm your nerves. * Aim for a jovial toast. Wedding toasts are typically given at the wedding reception, when guests and the bridal party are ready to celebrate. Such an atmosphere lends itself to a jovial toast wherein best men and maids of honor focus on happy times with the bride and groom. Tell a funny anecdote that illustrates the special bond you have with the bride or groom. When choosing a story to tell, remember to keep things appropriate for guests of all ages, including young children. * Steer clear of alcohol before giving your toast. Many people overindulge in alcohol at wedding receptions, but best men and maids of honor should avoid consuming alcohol until after they have toasted the bride and groom. Horror stories about drunken, inappropriate wedding toasts may seem more like an urban legend than a legitimate possibility, but the tendency for alcohol to lower peoples inhibitions makes it dangerous for men and women to consume it before giving their toasts. * Give your best wishes to the bride and groom before raising your glass. Raising your glass to toast the bride and groom is often the last step before your toasting duties officially end. But before you raise your glass, remember to offer your best wishes to both the bride and groom. Once those sentiments have been expressed, ask the guests to raise their glasses and toast the newlyweds. Toasting happy couples at their wedding receptions can be stressful for best men and maids of honor who are unaccustomed to speaking in front of large groups of people. But following a certain formula and speaking from the heart will ensure such toasts go off without a hitch.

Tips when toasting the bride and groom

Toasting the bride and groom at a wedding reception is a responsibility that typically falls on the shoulders of the brides father as well as the best man and the maid of honor. Though it is an honor to give a wedding toast, it also can be nerve-wracking, as no one wants to give a toast thats memorable for all the wrong reasons. While the best toasts are often those that veer off the beaten path, coming from the heart rather than from a how-to guide found on the Internet, there is a certain formula men and women can follow to ensure their toasts cover all of the appropriate bases without offending the bridal party or fellow guests. * Acknowledge the guests. Families are more geographically diverse than ever before, so more and more weddings host guests who come from far and wide to celebrate with happy couples on their wedding days. Its customary for men and women making wedding toasts to acknowledge the guests, thanking them for being there. This is often a great way for best men and maids of honor to break the ice and calm their nerves, especially at larger weddings where they may only know a small percentage of the guests. When thanking the guests, be sure to thank the parents of the bride and groom as well. * Explain your relationship to the bride and/ or groom. Best men and maids of honor should devote a portion of their toasts to explaining their personal relationships with the bride and/ or groom. Introduce yourself and explain how you met the bride or groom. Oftentimes, such stories have a comical twist that can further

Music often plays an important role on festive occasions, and wedding days are no exception. The right music can make a wedding day that much more meaningful, while the wrong music can make a couples big event memorable for all the wrong reasons. Though music selection might seem like one of the easier decisions couples must make, those about to tie the knot typically must make a host of music-related decisions regarding their wedding day, including whether to choose a live band or a deejay to perform at their wedding receptions. While the reception is when music might be most on display, couples planning their weddings must think beyond the reception when setting the musical tones for their weddings. day and evening.

Strathmore Times ~ 20 ~

How to approach music on your wedding day

Reception Many couples prefer deejays to live bands for their wedding receptions. Deejays can play favorite songs as couples and their guests know them, while bands can only play their own renditions of those songs. Another thing to consider when choosing between a deejay or live band for the reception is the venue itself. Some venues are smaller and unable to accommodate a full band, while others may not have ideal acoustics, making it difficult for a live band to sound as good as they might in a more music-friendly environment. The formality of the event should also come into consideration when choosing between a live band or a deejay for the reception. Deejays spinning the latest top 40 hits may stick out like sore thumbs at especially formal weddings, while a classical orchestra likely wont fit into the laid back theme of a beach or destination wedding. Couples tying the knot outdoors may need to consider equipment when choosing bands or deejays to play their weddings. For example, some venues do not provide equipment, such as microphones and speaker systems, to couples for their ceremonies. Renting such equipment can be costly, but couples can often skirt such charges by hiring deejays or bands who lend couples their equipment during the ceremony. Deejays or bands who will loan and set up the necessary sound equipment for outdoor ceremonies merit extra consideration. When discussing music to be played during the reception, couples must consider their own musical tastes as well as those of their guests. A wide range of popular music tends to go best at wedding receptions, as guests are more likely to dance to songs they recognize. Avoid any music that has the potential to offend guests, opting for lighter, happier tunes instead. Whether hiring a band or deejay, couples should make a list of no-play songs or artists and make sure that such lists are included in their contracts. Music plays an important role on couples wedding days. Though choosing music for the ceremony and the reception is often fun, couples must take such decisions seriously.

Ceremony The ceremony itself often sets the tone for a couples wedding day. A beach wedding, for example, often creates a laid back atmosphere, while a ceremony held in a large church or temple often sets a more formal tone. Music played during the ceremony also goes a long way toward setting the tone couples hope to establish. When choosing music for the ceremony, couples should first consider the venue where they are tying the knot. Some, such as houses of worship, may have rules pertaining to what can and cannot be played inside the venue. Classical, hymnal or processional music often makes the best fit when weddings are taking place in more formal venues. Outdoor weddings tend to give couples more leeway. But in general couples dont want to choose any music thats too loud or over-the-top for their ceremonies. Keep in mind that while the music played during the ceremony can set the tone for the day, this music can vary significantly from the music played during the reception. A favorite performer may not be appropriate during the ceremony, but that doesnt mean the couple cant dance to that artists music during the reception. Live musicians can add a more elegant feel to the ceremony, but such performers also can be costly. Playing prerecorded music may not be as elegant as having a live performer, but it can cost a lot less and still make for an enjoyable

Careful timing makes weddings go off without a hitch

As any holiday host can attest, timing is crucial to getting a meal out hot and ensuring each course is ready for the table. Timing is equally important when planning a wedding. Various elements must come together in the right order to create a seamless day for couples and guests alike. In addition to organizing floral deliveries, ensuring the wedding party arrives on time, and getting hair and makeup done promptly, couples who will be having their ceremony in a different location from the reception will need to spend more time factoring timing into their wedding day equations. Factors like traveling to and from the site, as well as hunger pangs and potential weather-related complications, will need to be considered. Many couples choose to have their ceremonies and receptions at the same site, a decision that makes scheduling much easier. Once the ceremony is over, guests simply go inside or to another area of the grounds to begin the reception. Some traditionalists, though, prefer to have their ceremony in a place of worship and then travel to a separate reception location afterward. Both scenarios are acceptable, but the latter option requires a little more planning. Couples will need to know when the church or temple is available for the ceremony and when the reception hall will be open to guests. Some weddings are held after daily masses or other religious ceremonies. An afternoon wedding may end a few hours before the cocktail hour begins at the reception site, leaving guests with time to kill before the reception. Couples can try to remove as much time between the reception and ceremony as possible by coordinating with their catering managers. If finances allow, couples can request the wedding reception begin early. This way guests can arrive at the cocktail hour and comfortably mingle among themselves. These requests are common, and many catering managers will be happy to meet requests to keep a bride and grooms business. If this is not possible, couples have a few alternatives. If the reception site is a good distance away, the travel there may take up the idle time. Otherwise, the bride and groom may need to come up with another plan. In some instances, a family member opens his or her home up to some of the guests, who may enjoy light refreshments. It may be possible to use a cafeteria or gathering space at the ceremony site for a little while as well. If the photographer plans to take outdoor photos between the ceremony and reception, the couple can invite some guests along to witness the shots or be a part of the photo shoot. Thoughtful couples also can provide other accommodations, such as letting guests know about local restaurants where they can spend a little time and grab a small bite to eat before the reception begins. Hotels affiliated with the wedding party may be able to host guests during these in-between hours as well. The hotel bar or a conference room might be ideal spots for guests to kill some time. Couples also can arrange something with the reception hall. While the party room or cocktail area may not be ready until the designated time, the site may have an attached restaurant, salon or gardens, where guests can relax as they wait for the start of the festivities. Timing all of the elements of a wedding day properly can be challenging. Guests comfort and needs should always be a priority.

Did you know?

According to TheKnot.com, a Web site catering to couples planning their weddings, roses reign supreme among wedding flowers. Long considered a symbol of love, roses often play an integral role on wedding days as well as holidays like Valentines Day or special events like a couples wedding anniversary. Couples embrace roses on their wedding days not only to symbolize their love for one another, but also because roses are a versatile flower available in numerous solid colors and many bicolor varieties. Tulips are another popular wedding flower. Also grown in a wide range of colors, tulips are often less expensive than roses, though rare varieties of tulips will cost brides- and grooms-to-be a significant amount of money. Though less versatile than roses and tulips with regards to their color, calla lily flowers are another popular choice for weddings. Lily of the valley, hydrangeas, the peony, and ranunculus are also popular wedding flowers. Though each type of flower isbeautiful in its own way, costs can vary considerably depending on the type of flowers couples choose for their wedding, something cost-conscious couples should consider before visiting florists.

The Strathmore Ice U14 squad hosted Provincials from March 14-16, playing five games. Wins were hard to come by, as the girls finished in eighth place. On March 15, they lost a close game to Spruce Grove 3-1.

Wind-up weekend
With U14 teams competing in Provincials at the Family Centre, the U7, U9, and U10 girls traveled to Rockyford for exhibition games and their year-end wind-up bash from March 15-16. Over 300 players wrapped up their seasons, with the four Strathmore teams and a Rockyford teams.

Winning effort
ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Strathmore Minor Ringette hosted U14 Provincials at the Family Centre from March 14-16, with the hometown girls giving their best effort. They placed eighth at the tourna=ment, and gained much needed experience. We played hard, said Sonny Warrack, tournament chair and goalie coach for the U14 squad. Though the wins werent there, the effort was. The U14 Strathmore Ice lost to Red Deer on March 14 by a score of 7-1, and fell in overtime to Calgary East the next day, 5-4. That was a tough one to take. We were leading most of the game, Warrack said. Later that afternoon, ghting fatigue, the Ice took on Spruce Grove. They were the highlight for our team, Warrack said of Spruce Grove, who went on to win bronze. I thought there was a very good possibility we could have won that game. Though the score was 2-1 for the majority of the game, with Strathmore continuously pressing, Spruce Grove pulled away in the last few minutes, and won 3-1. The Ice then played two consolation games on March 16, losing to Medicine Hat and Calgary North. We had played that team several times in the season and almost beaten them before, Warrack said of Calgary North. We just had a bad game against them. The U7, U9, and U10 girls traveled to Rockyford for year-end wind-up bashes for exhibition games, while the 110 girls who played in the provincials tournament partook in a skills competition on March 14. It was a really positive atmosphere. The girls had a riot out there, Warrack said. Strathmore Minor Ringette has already received thank you letters from all over the province from teams for their experience. We did a very good job representing our town overall, as an association. Also, our head organization, Ringette Alberta, complimented us with most people indicating it was the best provincials theyve ever attended, Warrack said. So were really happy about that. Warrack especially wanted to thank all their sponsors and volunteers for their hardwork and dedication. Were thrilled about the involvement of our association members. We need over 100 shifts lled and we did it, he said. It was just a positive weekend for our association. We hope that businesses around the town felt positive effects from it as well.

Shredders wind down

The Strathmore Ice Shredders wrapped up their year by participating in the year-end bash, which was held in Rockyford on March15-16. The girls had a great year and had lots of ice time to improve and bond as a team. Half the team will be moving up to petite next year where they will start being tiered. Coaches Kim, Rhonda, Jan and Russ are very proud of the girls sports ethics and improvement over the year and hope to be able to have the chance to coach them again in the future.

Hopping season!
The Strathmore Icicles U9 ringette team capped off their season by taking part in the Bunny Bash tournament in Rockyford over the weekend. It was a successful season for the girls, who won more than half of their 23 games this campaign.

The Strathmore Storm bantam B ladies battled against Fort Saskatchewan in a provincial round robin game on March 15, eventually breaking the tie in the third to win 3-2. Later that afternoon however, they lost 7-1 to the Red Deer Chiefs. Due to a tie in standings, and goal differential results, the Storm did not move on to the playoff round.

Three-way tie
ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The Strathmore Storm Bantam B ladies stepped up their game for the Provincial Championship in Brooks March 13-15. Unfortunately a tie-breaking procedure cost them a chance at moving on. Though the team had a 3-1 record through the round robin, they were tied three ways with Red Deer and Fort Saskatchewan for rst in the pool. Strathmores goal differential was not as tight in comparison to the other two teams, who were able to continue to playoffs. That was a tough one, Storm coach Doug Pagenkoph said. All three teams nished with the same record, and six points. Strathmore had 16 goals for and 10 against, while Red Deer had 18 for but four against, and Fort Saskatchewan had 10 for and three against. They couldnt have given any more. We just couldnt pull her through, Pagenkoph said. One standout was Haylea Crone for the Storm, who led the team with eight points in four games. Her play was outstanding. Shes been great all year, Pagenkoph said. Shes been one of our main leaders. Shes done really well. The rest of Crones teammates also made their shots count; the Storm had the highest team scoring efciency, with 19 per cent of their shots nding www.videogallery the back of the net. strathmore.formovies.com I guess the quality of shots were good ones. We tried to get good quality than forcing, Pagenkoph said. Their rst game of Provincials was a 4-0 win over the Calgary Avalanche on March 13. Brittney Sheller was named the Strathmore player of the game, also earning the shutout.

Jody Schneider Photo

Against the Lethbridge Hurricanes on March 14, the Storm dominated 8-1. Crone, player of the game, had two goals, as did Hanna Gallant. The squad put 36 shots on goal to Lethbridges 15. The next day, the girls won 3-2 over Fort Saskatchewan in the morning, with Yulisa Solda scoring the game winner at the beginning of the third, but lost in the afternoon 7-1 to the Red Deer Chiefs. Crone scored the lone unassisted goal. Strathmore only had four less shots than Red Deer, and eventually changed from Larissa Hiebert in net to Brittney Sheller, but it was too late. We lost our focus at the start of that game. By the time we had regained the focus in the third, wed dug ourselves deep, Pagenkoph said. They gave everything they had in that third period.

HELPING HAND! Have you ever noticed that God picks the most unlikely people to do the biggest jobs? I was thinking of King David in the Bible. His dad didnt even bring David out when Samuel asked to see his sons. All his other sons were big strong men, but God told Samuel not to look at the outward appearance. God was looking for the heart. There are many people who feel they are insignicant and of no value today. Take heart and be encouraged. Moses was chosen to lead over one million people out of Egypt, but he stuttered. We would never have chosen him for the task but God saw his heart and called him one of the most humble men that lived. When Jesus picked His disciples, they were a rough bunch. Especially Peter. But again, God didnt look at his rough exterior and impulsive behaviour, he saw a courageous heart for God. Even Mary, when she was told she would carry Gods Son, would probably not have been our rst pick. She was only around 14 years old. Yet her response shows her heart. She said, let it be to me according to your word. What an amazing response. I would probably have said, pick someone else. If anyone nds Im pregnant they might kill me. Ill be mocked and beaten and cast out by my family and city. Thats what God is looking for in us. Hes not looking to see how handsome and pretty we are, how physically strong we are, or how educated we are, He is looking for a heart that is willing to serve and love. The common thing about all these unlikely people that God chose is that they all gave glory to God for what He had done in their lives. And thats the key for us. We need to give God our hearts and trust that He will use us to bring Him glory. You are of great value to God and He has a denite plan for your life. I learned this poem a long time ago: What can I give Him as poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, Id give Him a lamb; If I were a wise man, Id do my part; But what can I give Him? I know! Ill give Him my heart! Will you give God your heart today and let Him use you to show love to others? Pastor Elizabeth Karp Harvest Healing Centre Church

Spartans conquer zones

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Coach Dion Galandy and the Strathmore High School (SHS) Spartans girls basketball team were seeded rst headed into zones from March 12-14; they proved their ranking to be accurate, winning gold against Bert Church High School by a score of 69-45. We probably played one of our best games all year, in that nal, Galandy said. I was condent that we could win. As soon as we play our game to our potential, I think we can compete with anybody in the province. Bert Church was seeded third in the tournament. They were down 44-20 at the half. It was close in the rst quarter. We kind of traded leads a little bit, Galandy said. Then our girls came to play. The three Spartan captains led the squad in the gold medal game Erin Warrack (25 points, 14 rebounds, four steals), Carter Jones (19 points, six steals, four assists), and Karly Larson (10 points, 12 assists, six steals). SHS played their rst zones game at home on March 12, defeating Olds 56-34. We beat them pretty good. We didnt play really well, but I think maybe the girls were a little bit nervous, Galandy said. The next day, SHS traveled to Olds to face Chestermere in the seminal, who were seeded fth. We still didnt play a great game, Galandy said. But wins are wins. The Spartans won 50-39 to earn a spot in the nal. For the three games in the zones tournament, starter Jessica Murphy returned to play, and though Galandy was thankful to see her on the court, it was a process to get used to having her back. For those rst two games, it was not as convincing wins as I would have liked, he said. To play when you dont have all of your regulars, and then they come back, its difcult to adjust at times. I think games one and two were our adjustment. Galandy has eight healthy girls on the roster right now, with one girl out for the season, and another out with a concussion. The latter may play in Provincials, beginning on March 20. Holy Rosary High School in Lloydminster will be hosting the tournament, where SHS is seeded sixth or seventh out of 12 teams. Peaking at this time is always what a coach wants. You try to plan for it, but it sometimes happens and sometimes it doesnt, Galandy said. Our goal is to medal. Itll be a tough road if that happens, but I think were ready for that challenge. Spartans battle to bitter end

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Having beat Bow Valley on March 11 to advance to zones, the Strathmore High School (SHS) Spartans boys basketball team knew that their next matchup would be a challenge. On March 12, they took on Chestermere High School in Olds, the top team in the province. The boys played really well. We ran with them for the rst quarter, said SHS coach Ken Smith. Theyre big and athletic. You cant take anything away from them. They can shoot well from the outside, and they have size on the inside kids standing at 67 or 68. We were outgunned. Chestermere more than doubled Strathmore High Schools points, 93-41, but as zones is double-elimination, the Spartans had one more chance to stay alive. The next day, they faced George McDougall, another top team in Alberta, and faltered once more, 93-63. We were running with them fairly well actually. But again, we just didnt execute on the little things footwork, boxing out, communication, and turning over the ball, Smith said. This was the rst time in three years that Strathmore has qualied for zones. They were pretty excited and pumped. From having a young and inexperienced team, to go from where they did at the start of the year until now, they improved astronomically, Smith said.

Strathmore Ice Warriors end season on a high

MEL BOSCHEE Strathmore Ice Warriors The Strathmore Ice Warriors capped of their season by taking part in the Provincial Championship in Airdrie on March 14-16. There were 11 other teams from around the province and the competition was great. The Ice Warriors started their gold medal Provincial run off on March 14 against the Spruce Grove Revenge. Spruce Grove came out looking for revenge from the Ice Warriors, as the Warriors had beaten them in our home town tournament in February to take the gold! That said, the competition was erce and it was back and forth both periods. When the nal buzzer sounded the score was 8-7 with the Spruce Gove Revenge coming out on top. The second game saw the Ice Warriors taking on the St. Albert Ringerz. Ice Warriors had never seen them play but heard they were a tough team. The Ice Warriors came out strong and after the rst period were up 3-0. St. Albert did not give up and in the second period, Ice Warriors were shut down, and the St. Albert Ringers scored three leaving the score tied. That took the team to ve minute sudden death overtime. Both teams were playing like they were on re but the St Albert Ringerz were able to put a tricky little shot past our goalie, Alex Mackey, giving the Ice Warriors their second loss. The St Albert Ringerz dashed the hopes of the Ice Warriors winning or playing for the gold medal. All was not lost, and the Ice Warriors decided they would leave the provincials on a high note with two more games to play. Ice Warriors game on Saturday was against Indus Lightening. Both teams were playing like they wanted to win and after the rst buzzer

sounded the score was a tight 3-1 in favour of the Ice Warriors. Fans were unaware of what the coaching staff discussed with the Ice Warriors, but they denitely turned it on. When the nal buzzer signalled the end of the game, the Ice Warriors stepped off the ice with a 9-2 victory. The nal game for the Ice Warriors came on Sunday which saw the Ice Warriors take on Sherwood Park Elite. Ice Warriors had played the Elite when they traveled up north for the Sherwood Park Tournament in November. The Ice Warriors were ready to show the Elite all the skills and moves they worked on since they last met. When the whistle sounded to signal the start of the game, you could see both teams wanted the nal win. It was tough competition and the rst goal of the game did not come until 5:34 in the rst period. This goal was scored by the Elite and the rst period ended with the Ice Warriors being shut out 1-0. The little breather between periods was just what the Warriors needed. They came out strong, and at 16:17 they scored their rst goal, followed up by another quick goal at 15:55. Halfway through the second, Elite answered back with a goal of their own and the fans saw a nail-bitter tie game with less than 10

minutes to go! The Ice Warriors scored at the 7:00 mark show them on top. Elite would not give up, and tried everything to get another one past our goalie, Alex Mackey, but defense was tough and offense was even better. In the nal seconds the Ice Warriors put in a nal goal into the empty net and that saw the Ice Warriors take the win off the board with a score of 4-2. Team members consist of Alex Mackey, Grace Praeker, Suzanne Sevcik, Jaylin MacLean, Payton Jenson, Laura Sader, Carly Krahenbil, Cayley Boschee, Meghan Munchrath, Joely Dahm, Olivia Wilson, Cosette Lacroix. A grand and exceptional effort was made by the whole team. The Ice Warriors lost as a team and won as a team. That nal win took away all the tricky little bounces, all the rings that just wouldnt go in, all the girls that got by, all the missed opportunities and reminded the Ice Warriors what a great season they had placing rst in their league play. The Ice Warriors were even coming out of the tournament. There will be a next time, so look out Alberta, Strathmore Ice will see you again!

Truly a lovely boy, Gerry is a very shy cat who does take awhile to warm up to new people. Once he trusts you he is so affectionate. Its hard to know his true nature if you happen to see him at the adoption centre, but with love and patience you would be very rewarded with a wonderful companion. Gerry will roll over for tummy rubs, cuddles and adores being groomed. He is excellent with other cats and would make an ideal cat buddy for a lonely feline.

Hawks snag bronze

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Though surprised by JC Charyk School from Hanna in the seminals, the Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) Hawks defeated Airdrie Koinonia Christian School for the junior varsity zones bronze medal at Strathcona Tweedsmuir on March 15. The junior boys basketball team won by roughly 25 points, with their entire bench touching the court. We were hoping we could win Zones, HCC coach Tony Irving said. Im kind of disappointing we just didnt know enough about Hanna. If we would have played them earlier in the season, we might have done better. Before earning their medal, earlier that day the Hawks lost 97-67 to JC Charyk. They had not played them in exhibition or league play this season. Hanna was a surprise because we watched them play on the Friday, they never ran. They walked up and down the oor, and they had no inside game. You kind of expect what to see when you go to play them, Irving said. They were the opposite when we went to play them. They were an incredibly good three-point shooting team. They did play an inside game, and they ran the whole game. Irving said the Hawks came back, and were down by many more points in the rst half. They were a very good team, and a tough team

to play against, he said. Its good when you go to zones to be able to play as many of those teams as you can before you go. Thats a lesson for another year. Looking forward to next year, the team will have no Grade 12s but will play at the senior level. Irvings second-string players received a lot of experience during their rst game at zones, against Acme on March 14, a 64-49 win. Acme usually has quite a strong program, but I think their team was quite young this year. We ended up being up by about 25 at the half, Irving said. That game against Hanna was a good learning experience and gives us more of an idea of what were going to have to do to succeed next year.

Warriors impress at Provincials

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter After going undefeated in the round robin portion of the Provincial Championship, the Wheatland Warriors faced a familiar foe in the seminals. Despite holding a lead after 40 minutes, the local double-A bantam team was edged-out 6-5 by the Okotoks Oilers on March 16 in Edmonton. The Oilers were the same team to defeat the Warriors earlier this season in league playoffs. Its tough, but at the end of the day Im pretty proud of the team. They accomplished a lot this weekend, Warriors coach Mark Laycock said. Our last round robin game against Calgary is a game Ill never forget. It was pretty exciting. Against the Calgary NWCAA Bronks, the Warriors had a 1-0 lead after the rst period on March 15. In the second, NWCAA scored four to take a commanding lead, even after Wheatland changed goalies from Matt Schafer to Ty Tarvyd. We just told the boys not to quit, and they stuck with it, Laycock said. It was pretty crazy. There was a little speech in the second intermission. Basically we told the boys, this is our last crack this might be our last chance to play together as a team. They took that, and kind of ran with it. The excitement was short-lived, however, as the next day in the semi-nal, Strathmore had a 4-0 lead in the second period. Okotoks suddenly scored three quickly before the end of 40 minutes. Both teams swapped their goalies. Matt was playing well, but it was maybe just a momentum shift. Once it was 4-3, you start to feel the pressure coming on, Laycock said. I know its frustrating. But it was kind of the same as the day before. You cant quit, because anything can happen. The Oilers tied the game and took the lead in a 20 second span with less than three minutes remaining. I thought we had some really good scoring opportunities. When it was 4-2, there were a couple shifts there where we had them penned in their zone, with three or four quality scoring chances. We just didnt put it in their goalie made some good saves, Laycock said. In other round robin games, Wheatland tied Fort McMurray 3-3 on March 13, defeated the MLAC Brickmen on March 14 by a score of 4-2, and dominated the Red Deer Steel Kings 7-1 on March 15. With two wins and two ties in round robin, the Warriors were in a three-way tie with Fort McMurray and Calgary NWCAA. All three teams had the same goal totals, and because Calgary had the most penalty minutes of the three, they were not chosen to advance. Chayse Hnatowich led Wheatland with seven points in ve tournament games, while Rylan Longmuir and Kyle Merkosky had four goals each. Overall it was a good season. Hopefully the boys learned a lot. When you nish rst in league, you want to be in the nals and play for the rings, but sometimes it doesnt work out that way, Laycock said. It was a great group of kids to coach. It was a lot of fun.

Raiders give Flames all they could handle

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The Okotoks-based Rocky Mountain Raiders, featuring four Strathmore players, concluded their season with a loss in the regional nals of the AMBHL playoffs. The triple-A bantam hockey team was up-ended by the Calgary NW Flames, the top south team, three games to one. The Flames are a very good team, they play a very aggressive style. We had some trouble establishing our powerplay, and getting anything set up. Our penalty kill was good, we limited their chances, Raiders assistant coach Paden Grant said. The amount of penalties in the series was a factor, and played a role in our demise. We were underdogs in the series, said Kaden Hanas, one of four Strathmore boys on the team. We proved ourselves in the rst game but then we just let off the gas pedal in the next three. Hanas assisted on the gamewinning goal on Feb. 26, as the Raiders had a 1-0 victory. Game 1 was probably our best game of the series. We probably caught them off guard. I dont think the Flames thought that we would take a game, and neither did anyone else, Grant said. After that, we still played well, but they rolled four lines and kept the pressure on us all the time. We fell a little short. Rocky Mountain lost 4-2 on March 1, 7-0 on March 5 (four Flames goals coming on the man advantage), and 8-5 on March 8 to lose the series. Despite the quick exit from the playoffs, Grant expressed pride when speaking of his Strathmore players, Hanas, Isaac Benoit, Tyler Strath, and Scott Desserre. They all played well and contributed. Kaden and Scott played very well, and executed their roles same with Tyler and Isaac, said Grant. Tyler and Isaac gained a lot of experience going into next season. According to Hanas, this season was very benecial to his development. It denitely gave me a lot of condence, said Hanas. We just did our thing I guess. We all play different roles. We did what we could throughout the year and the playoffs.

DID YOU KNOW? A little about everything.

I have been asked many times to list the parents family home. When I arrive the home usually has been completely emptied except for possibly a couple of boxes in the corner. Staging a home makes a home look so much nicer. So think about leaving a few pictures on the wall, a couch and a chair, the dining room table and chairs, etc. The buyers can then imagine what their furniture would look like in the home. Statistics have shown that a completely vacant home will sell on average about 10% less than a home with furniture in it. This is a statistic I can verify through my experience selling bank foreclosures. Also when looking at finding the age of a home there are usually several ways one can determine this, none of which are fool proof but it might just help.

BRAND NEW 3 BEDROOM CONDOS, 6 APPLIANCES PARKING STALL, DOWNTOWN AREA $177,900! BRAND NEW CONDOS WITH IN FLOOR HEAT GRANITE COUNTER TOPS AND 6 APPLIANCES!

First check the windows, there are usually dates in the window panes if the windows are sealed units. Another trick is to check the inside of the toilet tank lid. If the toilet is original you may solve the age mystery there. Another area to check is the electrical panel. Quite often there will be a dated inspectors stamp of the permit placed there. Finally if all else fails, head on over to the local municipality office as they may have the answer in their archives. Another tip, when purchasing an acreage or farm land, have your realtor get an aerial photo of the subject property, especially in winter. It not only shows the boundaries, it also shows low spots which indicate areas where water would collect or the quality of the land (alkalie, etc.).
