Section 1
Overview
1.1 Description
The RG-Ant ™ is an 18 dBi gain flat panel directional antenna with a built-in Orinoco Residential Gateway
RG-1000™. The equipment is 802.11b WiFi™ compliant, operates at up to 11 Mbps and is ideal for
providing maximum coverage over a focused area, like an 802.11b Hot Zone.
The RG-Ant can also be flashed through the Ethernet connection with YDI-Fi™ or TurboCell™ client
software. This makes it an ideal low-cost CPE solution. By installing the YDI-Fi or Turbo Cell suite you are
loading extra functionalities into your RG-Ant, such as Base and different flavors of Remote Outdoor
Router (OR) according to the license you bought. You can also load YDI’s AP+ or Super Ethernet
Client/Converter software.
With the wireless client adapter built right into the antenna, there are no complicated hardware
configurations or radio frequency (RF) cables. Because the RG-Ant has the radio built-in, professional
antenna installation is not required. Once the RG-Ant is connected, simply install the RG Setup Utility
from the CD-ROM included in the kit and configure the network settings.
Two variations of the RG-Ant are available: the standard series RG-Ant, and the RG-Ant –LR with the
addition of an integrated bi-directional fixed amplifier to boost range and improve reception. The antenna
housing is waterproof and intended to be a pole or wall-mounted outdoor installation.
The RG-Ant kit includes a 50 foot outdoor-rated Ethernet cable with a weatherproof connector (longer
cables are available as on option). By using RJ-45 in-line couplers, you can extend the cable up to 300
feet between the RG-Ant and the DC Power Injector (however the RG-Ant –LR can operate only with an
Ethernet cable up to a maximum length of 100 feet between the unit and the DC Power Injector). The
WLAN device located in the antenna gets its power from the DC Power Injector which puts DC power
onto the Ethernet cable.
Both the RG-Ant and the RG-Ant –LR version operate from a 15 VDC power supply. A 110 VAC adapter
is included with the RG-Ant package, and a 110/220 VAC “laptop-type” adapter can be purchased
separately as an option. The RG-Ant –LR version comes standard with the 110/220 VAC “laptop-type”
adapter.
• Easy-to-run outdoor-rated Ethernet cable provided (50 feet standard, can be optionally extended
up to 300 feet for standard series and up to 100 feet for –LR models)
• DC power for electronics in the antenna are carried up the Ethernet cable (Power Over Ethernet,
POE)
• Windows-based RG Setup Utility software fro configuration
• Ideal for use with YDI-Fi or TurboCell client software
• Operating range: -20 C to +50 C
• Ethernet interface – The RG-Ant is designed to connect directly to a hub or switch (a cross-over
cable or adapter is needed for a connection to a PC), so new driver installation is not required as
long as a compatible Ethernet port driver is loaded. Once the RG-Ant is connected, simply install
the RG Setup Utility from the CD-ROM and configure the network settings.
• 18 dBi Gain Antenna – This high-gain directional antenna provides long-range wireless
connectivity.
• Installation – Part 15 FCC Certification does not require professional installation. However,
someone who is experienced in installing devices outdoors should do the installation.
• 802.11b compliant – The RG-Ant is WiFi™ compatible and will work with any certified 802.11b
compatible device. This includes WLAN devices such as the YDI Diamond WLAN Card and YDI
USB Antenna.
• Flat panel 18 dBi gain directional antenna with built-in radio and RG-1000 (-LR models feature an
integrated bi-directional amplifier for increased transmit power and receive signal sensitivity for
longer range)
• Sturdy steel wall/mast tilt-bracket mount
• Outdoor Ethernet cable with weatherproof antenna connector (50 feet standard, can be optionally
extended up to 300 feet for standard series and up to 100 feet for –LR models)
• Cat 5 DC Power Injector
• DC Power Adapter for 110 VAC (220 VAC optional), output: 15 VDC (-LR model comes standard
with a 110/220 VAC “laptop-type” adapter, output: 15 VDC)
• CD-ROM with RG Setup Utility software and documentation

Installation
Safety Warning
NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you configure and test the unit prior to deploying it in the
field. Set up a “mini-network” that resembles your actual configuration as close as possible.
By using such a mock-up, troubleshooting potential problems will be much easier than if you
already installed the equipment in the field. Read through this entire Section 2 to understand
how to install the hardware. To configure the RG-Ant , read Section 3.
When installed outdoors, it is very important that the round connector plugged on the antenna be properly
waterproofed. Ensure that a high quality all-weather resistant electrical tape and/or other water sealant
method, such as Permagum or equivalent, is utilized. Silicon sealants are not recommended since
they are hard to work with, do not ensure a 100% waterproofing of the connectors and are difficult to
remove, if ever necessary.
CAUTION: Operating the RG-Ant -LR version with more than 15 VDC will damage it. Operating it with
less than 15 VDC will cause improper operation.
A test that can be performed involves using a laptop computer, a YDI Sapphire or Diamond WLAN card,
and the Wireless Client Manager program that comes with it. Insert the WLAN card in the laptop
computer, install the program and run it. The Advanced -> Link Test screen of the Wireless Client
Manager program shows signal strength levels. Walk around the desired coverage areas with the laptop
computer and record the signal levels. This way you can build a map of the areas that have good
coverage.
For details about how to set up, configure, and use the Wireless Client Manager program, please refer to
the User Manual of the product.
1. If you are going to install the antenna on a mast or pipe, use the brackets and screws to mount
the flat panel antenna to a pole with a maximum diameter of up to 1 3/4 inches.
2. Ensuring that there is no DC power applied to the DC Power Injector, plug the 6-pin N-male round
connector of the outdoor Ethernet cable provided into the rear jack of the flat panel antenna,
aligning the notch on the connector with the tab on the jack as shown on Figure 2.3. Then turn
the round locking nut clockwise as you push in until it securely fastens onto the jack. Please
verify that the round connector is properly plugged into the rear jack of the antenna prior
to connecting DC power because it is possible to push it in the wrong way if enough force is
used. If DC power is applied and the connector is not properly plugged, damage to the electronics
of the unit or the connector itself may occur which will not be covered by the factory warranty.
3. Attach the other end of the outdoor Ethernet cable provided to the Cat 5 DC Power Injector at
port RJ-45 labeled “To Ant.”
4. Connect the Ethernet cable labeled “To PC or ROUTER” from the Cat 5 DC Power Injector to
your router, switch or hub. If you connect to a computer or PC, a cross-over cable or adapter will
be needed.
5. Plug the AC Adapter into an AC outlet and connect it to the “DC Power” jack on the Cat 5 DC
Power Injector.
6. Check that the Power and Ethernet LEDs are lit. For –LR models, check that the RX / Power
amplifier LED (green) is also lit.
7. Configure the RG-Ant Client Adapter using the RG-Setup Utility software. (See Section 3 for
detailed information.)
Section 3
RG-Ant Management
3.1 Installation
The Windows-based RG Setup Utility software can be installed on a PC or workstation running Windows
98, ME, 2000, NT, or XP. This software has a GUI (Graphical User Interface), which makes it easy to
use. The program allows you to locally or remotely perform the following procedures:
Please note that the computer or workstation where the RG Setup will be
installed must be on the same subnet as your RG-Ant units in order to
properly configure them, and must have a wireless (NOT an Ethernet)
connection to the RG-Ant.
CAUTION
Windows Installation – To install the RG Setup Utility in Windows, perform the following steps:
1. Insert the YDI CD-ROM included in the RG-Ant kit into the appropriate drive of your computer. Using
your Windows Explorer open the contents of the CD-ROM drive and select the following directory:
\Management\RG\.
2. Run the Set Up program. Simply follow the instructions in the center of the screen, and they will
guide you through the entire process.
3. All detailed documentation about how to set up, configure, and use the RG Setup Utility can be found
on the CD-ROM in the directory \Manuals\ORINOCO.
The latest software and User’s Manuals can also be found at:
http://www.ydi.com/support/downloads.php, and
http://www.ydi.com/support/documents.php.
Note: To install YDI-Fi or Turbo Cell you are required to have a license key. There are three ways
you can get a key:
1
These programs can come pre-installed by YDI. If you install them yourself, you do so at your own risk.
1. Plug the Ethernet port of the device into your computer with a crossover cable, and power it on.
2. Place a magnet (not provided) over the Reset spot on the back of the RG-Ant, and then immediately
move it over the Load spot, and hold it there (see Figure 3.1). You should end up with an orange
power light, NOT red or green. Once this state has been achieved, remove the magnet.
3. From your YDI CD-ROM, select the directory \Management\YDI AP Manager. Run the Set Up
program ydi_ap.exe. Simply follow the instructions in the center of the screen, and they will guide
you through the entire process.
4. Open the directory where the manager program has been installed (the default is \Program
Files\YDI\AP Manager). Run the program AP Manager.exe.
7. The RG-Ant should show up with an IP address of 153.69.254.254 and display its MAC address
under Name. This step verifies that you have a good Ethernet connection to the device. You can
close these windows.
8. You must be able to establish an IP level connection to the device. Do this by statically assigning an
IP to your computer within the same IP subnet as the device. For example: IP: 153.69.254.253;
subnet mask: 255.255.0.0.
11. Open the drop down menu at the bottom, and select Kernel Files (*.bin).
12. Highlight the desired bin file in the large window above, then click the Open button.
13. In the new window click on the Import License Key button.
14. Navigate to the directory where your license key file is stored.
15. Open the drop down menu at the bottom labeled Files of Type, and select All License Key Files
(*.LKF).
16. In the large window, look for the file labeled KNxxxxx-V400-************.lkf where xxxxx matches the
bin type, and ************ matches the MAC Address of the RG-Ant. Highlight this file and click on the
Open button.
17. The license key information should now be filled in, verify that the MAC Address field contains the
correct MAC Address, then Click the OK button. You should get a popup window stating Opened
File: followed by the path to the file, click OK on this.
19. Both interfaces will say Not Configured. Highlight Interface 1, then in the drop down menu to the
right select Ethernet.
20. Highlight Interface 2, and in the dropdown menu to the right select WaveLAN (or Legacy
WaveLAN). Interface 1 must now say Ethernet, and Interface 2 must say WaveLAN (or Legacy
WaveLAN). If you have an Interface 3 this too must be set to WaveLAN (or Legacy WaveLAN).
Once you have verified this click OK.
22. You should get a window asking for an IP address and password. Ignore the password and make
sure the IP Address reads 153.69.254.254. Test your connection to it by pinging 153.69.254.254,
then click OK (you may need to uncheck the box labeled This device is on my Local Subnet).
23. You should get several confirmation pop-ups, simply click Yes or OK on these. When it is finished the
RG-Ant should reboot.
24. After the RG-Ant has rebooted, go to the File menu in the program and select Open Remote Config.
25. Click on the Scan button, the RG-Ant should now show up with an IP address of 198.17.74.254. This
is its default IP address.
26. At this point you can either change your computer's IP to match the subnet of the RG-Ant (ex: IP:
198.17.74.253; subnet mask: 255.255.255.0), or use the Change IP option on the UNIPOP. NOTE: if
the Change IP option is used, your computer must have an IP address assigned within the same IP
subnet that you are changing the device to.
27. Once this is done Click OK on both windows, and you should get a message stating that the
configuration has been read. At this point you can configure the device with the desired options in the
Setup menu.
