Competence Profile (MSc) A graduate from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has a research-based education at a high technological level that qualifies the graduate to take on specialized business functions and participate in scientific development. A masters degree in Engineering also gives access to further education within research (e.g. research positions or a PhD). The graduate has: basic understanding and knowledge of the natural sciences and technological principles. The graduate can use this knowledge for innovative purposes such as solving technological problems in business or societal contexts. extensive technological expertise within a specific area and knowledge of current trends and opportunities within this area. a clear professional profile which includes elements of current research at an international level. The graduate has the ability to use this knowledge in developing new ideas and solving new problems. a thorough understanding of how elements of a technological problem interact. The graduate is able to develop relevant models, systems and processes to solve the problem in question using creative analysis and modeling. the ability to assess and delimit complex issues, put them into a broad professional and societal context, and, on this basis, propose relevant courses of action. the ability to combine technological expertise with knowledge of economics, management, organization and project work. The graduate is able to examine technological solutions in a business and societal perspective.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE OBJECTIVES (MSc) The MSc program in Transport and Logistics
Transport and Logistics uses application-oriented mathematical models and computer-based tools to understand, solve, analyze and evaluate complex issues in transport, traffic and logistics. Graduates have also mastered software technology, data analysis and statistics, operations research, geo-informatics, economic disciplines and planning and management.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE OBJECTIVES (MSc) The MSc program in Transport and Logistics Traffic Planning and Traffic Engineering
Traffic planning underpins decision-making on new infrastructure construction and large-scale investments in public transport. It is also a basic ingredient in operating public and freight transport and road-networks. A graduate of this study-line has a thorough knowledge of traffic engineering (capacity and performance) an important component in overall planning and takes aspects of urban planning into account in traffic-infrastructure projection.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE OBJECTIVES (MSc) The MSc program in Transport and Logistics Railway Technology
The nature of the Railway Technology study-line is determined by railways inflexible infrastructure, which puts a premium on planning, analysis and evaluation in design and operation. Graduates of this study-line possess a thorough knowledge of railway capacity, traffic management, and the design and planning of railway operation and can evaluate infrastructure and operation options.
plan the operation and maintenance of railway infrastructure including the interaction between trains and infrastructure calculate and evaluate railway life-cycle costs evaluate RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety) for railways evaluate the need for and participate in the preparation of analyses and designs for use in railway infrastructure and general transport decisionmaking
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE OBJECTIVES (MSc) The MSc program in Transport and Logistics Traffic and Transport Modeling
Traffic and transport models are computer-based mathematical models used to determine the consequences of new infrastructure projects or policies. Such modeling is fundamental when planning and deciding large-scale traffic infrastructure investments and important to the daily work of operators and shipping firms. Graduates of this studyline have mastered the construction of traffic-infrastructure and mathematical models describing present and future traffic. They combine methodological expertise, statistics, operations research, and IT, with specific subjects regarding the modeling of demand for transport and of discrete choices (e.g. between means of transport and route choices). Individual focuses can include modeling issues in road or rail traffic or public transport. Since traffic models are normally case-specific, R&D is integral to traffic modeling. Graduates work as consulting engineers in the private or public sector or as researchers.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE OBJECTIVES (MSc) The MSc program in Transport and Logistics Transport and Business Logistics
Transport and Business Logistics seeks to optimize transport, flows of goods and storage within companies and between companies and their customers and suppliers. Graduates of this study-line can manage the construction of logistics systems and their ongoing planning and operation in many different types of companies, including large production and service companies. The thesis project is often prepared in collaboration with a company, and normally includes modeling, selection of solution method, implementation, testing and evaluation.
