PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE OBJECTIVES (MSc) The MSc program in Transport and Logistics Traffic and Transport Modeling
Traffic and transport models are computer-based mathematical models used to determine the consequences of new infrastructure projects or policies. Such modeling is fundamental when planning and deciding large-scale traffic infrastructure investments and important to the daily work of operators and shipping firms. Graduates of this studyline have mastered the construction of traffic-infrastructure and mathematical models describing present and future traffic. They combine methodological expertise, statistics, operations research, and IT, with specific subjects regarding the modeling of demand for transport and of discrete choices (e.g. between means of transport and route choices). Individual focuses can include modeling issues in road or rail traffic or public transport. Since traffic models are normally case-specific, R&D is integral to traffic modeling. Graduates work as consulting engineers in the private or public sector or as researchers.

The graduate can:

create new traffic and transport complexes, including specification, estimation, calibration, implementation and validation of models analyze and evaluate existing traffic and transport models based on 4-step, logit, probit and assignment models analyze the need for and undertake the management of the maintenance and improvement of existing traffic and transport models analyze a traffic-related problem and design the methods and models that can be used to describe it when preparing requirement specifications for new models use existing models for planning transport systems (public transport, road traffic, air/freight transport, etc.) assess results from traffic and transport models and communicate them to stakeholders/clients
