7 SKILLS FOR LEARNING PART 1. The following chapter explains in detail the 2 inportant skills of learning 1. Reading Comprehension 2. Analytical problem solving Reading for comprehension of course material has a few steps. First is to establish purpose before you read. Secondly, decide on the size of the reading. Thirdly, write down questions that you might have about the reading before you start. While reading for comprehension, one should never start without having a pencil and paper at hand for short note taking. Then one should try to focus on the readings and not the problems given as examples. Understanding concept is rewarding while understanding the method to do problems is unproductive. For technical reading one must not read fast and skim through material. One might be able to read through 20-60 pages of a novel in half an hour but expect to spend more time when dealing with technical reading. While reading one must write down what they dont understand and then try to find the answer by re- reading the text . It is also good practice to stop reading and refer back to what one has read. This helps one recollect what they have read. In order to reinforce the information read , review the information that has been read. This can also be done in a study group. After following these steps one should attempt problem solving. For Analysis problems following steps should be taken : Step 1. Understand the problem Step2 . Devise a plan Step 3. Carry out the plan Step 4. Look Back and recheck your calculations

PART II Section 1. I like the way the author split the problem solving part of technical comprehension with the technical reading part. I also like the fact that the author emphasizes on learning concepts and understanding theory before starting to apply analytical questions and numerical problems. This approach of learning and understanding technical material is definitely successful and should be used by every college student in the technical field. It is interesting how the anaylical problem solving is broken down into steps that are usually used in the field on Engineering and is good practice in design and build firms. For example. Step 1. Understand the problem - understanding the end users demand Step2 . Devise a plan blue printing/ prototyping Step 3. Carry out the plan build phase of prototype inclusive of test phase as well Step 4. Look Back and recheck your calculations calibration and quality control phase. All the material covered in this section is exceptionally relevant to me due to the same reasons. As it relates to the work procedures involved in engineering.

Part II Section 2 1. Could the author elaborate how the nature of problem affects the problem solving strategy in a practical application? 2. Why is general problem solving methodology different from analysis problem solving.?

Part II Section 3

I tend to skim through some of my technical material at work which leads to errors and conditions in the prototyping that are unexpected. When I sit and read the basis of the research again to understand the concept, the errors are clearly pointed out in the research provided. Such negligence costs me time and money and I need to stop skimming through technical research and spend more time understanding the concept before implementing it into the build phase. This week I will be attending again to my air purification research by reading through the basis of all the background research my experiment is based off. This will help me mitigate chances of failure at the prototype and build level.

Ans 3) It is important to know ones learning skills so that one can understand what one can prefer in terms of reading and analytics. If one understands how one learns they can surround themselves with the same kind of media. If on can learn through graphs and examples more than understanding the problems through concept then they would surround themselves with hands on work for successful learning. Some changes that I plan to implement for myself are 1. Spend more time going over technical reading rather than jumping into the experiment or prototype right away. 2. Make an effort to make graphical solutions from portrayed theoretical concepts given . ( like trajectory of a ball/ concept of gravity)
