Poetry
How is a poem made? Poets first establish a theme & a purpose Then s/he uses imagery, tone & mood. Poetry makes use of figurative language to help the reader see & feel what the writer does.

Theme
Definition:
the initial or primary idea throughout the story, poem, song, etc. the theme is the point a writer is trying to make about a subject. the theme of the poem tells what the whole poem is about.

Tone
Definition:
The implied attitude of a writer (or speaker) toward the subject and characters of a work. Do you like your topic, hate it, could care less, think it is the best thing ever, find it beautiful or ugly, what is going on in that brain of yours?

Mood
Definition:
the dominant feeling or atmosphere of a work. Dark, light, happy, sad, are simple moods.

Point of View
Definition:
the perspective from which a story/poem is told

Free Verse
Definition:
Poetry without a regular pattern of meter or rhyme.

Free Verse
Free verse is just what it says it is - poetry that is written without proper rules about form, rhyme, rhythm, meter, etc. In free verse the writer makes his/her own rules. The writer decides how the poem should look, feel, and sound. Free verse can be a great way to "get things off your chest" and express what you really feel.

Figurative Language
Definition:
A form of language in which writers or speakers mean something other than the literal meaning of their words. (E.g. hyperbole, metaphor, and simile)

Personification
Definition:
giving human qualities to a non-human thing or idea. Ex. The angry sky...

Personification
Examples:
"The ancient car groaned into third gear." "The cloud scattered rain throughout the city." "The tropical storm slept for two days."

Personification

The video camera observed the whole scene. 4. The strawberries seemed to sing, "Eat me first!" 5. The rain kissed my cheeks as it fell. 6. The daffodils nodded their yellow heads at the walkers. 7. The water beckoned invitingly to the hot swimmers. 8. The snow whispered as it fell to the ground during the early morning hours. 9. The china danced on the shelves during the earthquake. 10. The car engine coughed and sputtered when it started during the blizzard.
