The *ompany shall appoint, in writing, one or more suitably (ualified employees as !adiation +afety 3fficer. They will be responsible for the supervision of all aspects of work involving the control, storage, use and transport of radioactive sources and use of '"ray e(uipment. 1uties also include overseeing safe working practices, capability of dealing with emergencies, investigation and reporting of incidents. They shall be sub7ect to medical and monitoring re(uirements. 5ame$s%, location and telephone contact numbers shall be prominently displayed at base office and all sites where work involves the use of ioni/ing radiations.

-.3

.uthorised Persons
The *ompany shall appoint suitably (ualified employees as .uthorised Persons. +uch persons will be trained and approved in writing to internationally recogni/ed standards and shall be capable of demonstrating and undertaking the following specific duties2 " " " " " 8se and control of ioni/ing radiation#s, '"ray and&or gamma ray sources. establishing barriers for the protection of personnel where ioni/ing radiation#s are present. 8se of radiation monitoring e(uipment. *ontrol of sources, including safety operations involving !+3 as and when necessary. ,nvestigation and reporting of incidents.

They shall be sub7ect to medical and monitoring re(uirements.

*lassified Person
The *ompany shall appoint suitably trained employees whose work causes same to be within the pro'imity $controlled area% of ioni/ing radiation#s, normally assistants or trainees under guidance of .uthorised Person. +uch person9s duties re(uire knowledge of the operation for the safe termination of any operational e'posure of ioni/ing radiation and use of radiation monitoring e(uipment to observe barrier parameters. :e will be sub7ect to medical and monitoring re(uirements. :e is not permitted to undertake any other duties involving ioni/ing radiation#s unless so authorised in writing by the *ompany.

-.4

5on"classified Person
+uch persons not classified in accordance with above re(uirements i.e. general public, contract personnel, and&or others, are not permitted to be involved in work or passage where ioni/ing radiation#s are present, for this reason same are e'cluded from radiation areas where specific barriers and warning signs are erected for their protection and radiation dose rate e'ceeds 6.4 +v&hr $0.64mr&hr%.

-.;

0onitoring
.ll classified personnel shall be provided with a monitoring film badge&thermo luminescent dosimeter as supplied by an approved organi/ation $e.g. :P. 8<%. The badge must be worn on the body outside clothing and shall be replaced on a four weekly basis with the T=1&film being returned to the laboratory for assessment. The classified person is responsible for the proper use and safe keeping of his badge and film&T=1 plate and would be sub7ect to action by the *ompany for failure to return same to base office, or loss, or damage.

-.6

,ncident reporting
.ny incident involving ionising radiation where a dose rate in e'cess of that permitted is suspected must be reported immediately with full details to the !+3 who will investigate and decide upon action to be taken.

5 0 SEALED SOURCES 5.1 Equipment

The *ompany has only gamma ray e'posure e(uipment of the remote control type and each pro7ector has a uni(ue number to facilitate record keeping in respect of movement, location and for maintenance purposes. The sealed source also has a uni(ue number for record purposes.

5.2

Control of sealed sources

.n accurate accounting system shall be maintained for individual sources. >ach source record shall include the serial number, receipt date, decay chart, test report, pro7ector or transit container used, daily location and disposal date including method and documentation. 1aily movement of sealed sources shall be recorded in the store&site log book and shall be signed in and out by the responsible authorised person.

5.3

Loss of sealed source

The purpose of accurate record keeping for sealed sources is to prevent loss and to provide detailed information of last known whereabouts should loss occur. ,t is the e'press duty of all personnel to notify the !+3 immediately if there are any grounds for believing that a source has been lost or mislaid. The !+3 shall investigate circumstances and then initiate a search, keeping those with a need to know informed at all times.

6 0 OPERATIONS 6.1 Personnel

.ll operations carried out by authorised personnel involving ioni/ing radiations are strictly controlled in accordance with the re(uirements of this document and the *ompany9s +afety Policy.

6.2

Equipment
.ll e(uipment supplied by the *ompany is of modern technical specification and having a uni(ue number to facilitate accurate record keeping for location calibration and maintenance purposes.

6.3

Protection
!adiation survey meters are provided with current calibration certificates to ensure that the dose rate at the barrier of any radiation area does not e'ceed 6.4+v&hr $0.64m!&hr% and that when using gamma sources that the source is returned safely to it9s container after each e'posure. *ollimators are provided for use with gamma sources to reduce radiation levels. To prevent access to any radiation area, warning signs, barriers, flashing lights are posted to warn of the ha/ard.

6.4

Monitoring
Personnel are issued with monitoring film badge&thermo luminescent dosimeter, audible alarm and (uart/ fibre dosimeter, which gives reasonably accurate instant assessment of the cumulative dose received.

Emergenc procedures
!efer to !adiation >mergency Procedure

!afeguards
The techni(ues, e(uipment and personnel training have been developed over the years on worksites throughout the world and by e'perience the selection of both (ualified personnel and proven e(uipment together with the re(uirements of this document serve to afford the safest possible working environment for authorised&classified and non"classified personnel alike together with a sound, practical method of working with ioni/ing radiation#s.

7 0 SITE RADIOGRAPHY ".1 #eneral

8pon instruction to proceed to 7ob site for work involving the use of ioni/ing radiations, the authorised person will adopt the following procedures2
