The Digestive System/El Aparato Digestivo

Bilingual lesson (English/Spanish)

For one of my bilingual ed classes in grad school, my group created a bilingual lesson about the
digestive system aligned to CA 5th grade science standards. I teach high school Spanish now, but I wrote
this story and hope someone will find it useful! There is an English version and a Spanish version of the
story “Penelope Peanut’s Adventure.” It explains the sequence of digestion and the function of each
organ. You could also use the story to support personification and sequencing. When we taught the
lesson, we used a life size diagram of the digestive system to trace the action as I read the story aloud,
but you could have students trace it on their own bodies as you read (after front-loading the vocab and
pointing to the parts on a diagram.) It’s silly, so have fun! (We had previously softened the students up
by reading the book Everyone poops.)

Oh yeah, I also know that the term “cacahuate” in the Spanish version is strictly Mexican, so feel free to
change it to “maní” per your student population…you might just lose the alliteration.

Penelope Peanut’s Adventure!

Penelope was an unusual peanut. Although she had grown underground like other peanuts, she
was an only child, not like most peanuts who are twins and share a shell. She often felt ashamed and
embarrassed and wished she could be anything but a pathetic only-peanut. Until one day, a hungry
human saved her!
The girl cracked open Penelope’s humiliating shell, freeing her from her lonely home. The girl
put the happy peanut in her mouth, and Penelope’s adventure began! Inside the girl’s mouth, her teeth
mashed Penelope into tiny pieces, small enough to swallow.
Am I peanut butter yet? wondered Penelope as the girl’s tongue pushed her into the esophagus.
All of Penelope’s little pieces were squeezed through the esophagus like toothpaste through a tube. It
was only a few seconds before she was in the girl’s stomach!
Inside the stomach, Penelope was tossed and turned around as acids helped break her into even
smaller pieces. Maybe now I am peanut butter! she thought to herself as she squeezed through a tight
hole into the girl’s small intestine.
Through the small intestine Penelope traveled, round and round, turning corner after corner.
This was the longest part of her journey; the small intestine was over twenty feet long, but it was
wrapped up like a garden hose. She felt less and less like Penelope Peanut as the small intestine
absorbed most of her nutrients.
At last, Penelope exited the small intestine and entered the large intestine. I feel different, she
thought. I must be peanut butter by now! The large intestine was wide but not as long as the small
intestine. It absorbed water from Penelope as she moved slowly through the colon before stopping in
the rectum. In the rectum, she would wait until the girl used the bathroom…
Little did Penelope know that she would not leave the girl’s anus as Penelope Peanut Butter. She
was now Penelope Poo!
¡La aventura de Carolina Cacahuate!

Carolina era un cacahuate especial. Aunque había crecido bajo la tierra como los otros
cacahuates, era hija única, diferente de los demás cacahuates que son gemelos y comparten su cáscara.
Muchas veces se sentía avergonzada de su soledad y deseaba ser cualquier otra cosa que un triste
cacahuate solitario. ¡Hasta que un día una niña hambrienta la salvó!
La niña partió en dos la cáscara de Carolina, liberándola de su hogar solitario. La niña metió el
cacahuate en su boca y así comenzó la aventura de Carolina. Dentro de la boca de la niña, los dientes
machacaron a Carolina en pedacitos tan chiquitos que se podían tragar.
¿Ya seré crema de cacahuate? se preguntó Carolina mientras la lengua de la niña la empujó
hacia el esófago. Todos los trocitos de Carolina pasaron por el esófago apretados como la pasta de
dientes en su tubo. ¡Sólo pasaron unos pocos segundos para que llegara al estómago de la niña!
Dentro del estómago Carolina se revolcaba con el movimiento. Los ácidos del estómago
ayudaron a desintegrarla en trocitos aun más pequeños. ¡Quizás ahora se crema de cacahuate! pensó
emocionadamente al pasar apretada por una abertura estrecha al intestino delgado de la niña.
Por el intestino delgado viajó Carolina, dando vuelta tras vuelta. Esa fue la parte más larga de su
viaje. El intestino delgado medía siete metros pero estaba enroscada como una manguera de jardín.
Carolina se sentía cada vez menos como Carolina Cacahuate mientras el intestino delgado absorbía la
mayoría de sus nutrientes.
Por fin Carolina salió del intestino delgado y entró al intestino grueso. Me siento diferente
pensó. ¡Debo ser crema de cacahuate ya! El intestino grueso era ancho pero no tan largo como el
intestino delgado. Él exprimió el agua de Carolina cuando pasó por el colon antes de parar en el recto.
En el recto, ella iba a esperar hasta que la niña usara el baño.
Lo que Carolina no sabía era que cuando saliera por el ano de la niña no sería Carolina Crema de
Cacahuate. Ahora era…¡Carolina Caca!
