Evaluation Task 3: How does your media product represent a particular social group?

Overview In our opening sequence Survivor our main protagonist Tyler is a teenage male who is between the ages of 17/18 years old. In the opening scene Tyler is seen unconscious lying in dirt surrounded by wildlife and trees. Our protagonist is alone; he is in this forest surrounded by endlessly amounts of trees with no living people in sight. He then wakes up and stumbles to his feet he doesnt remember how he got there but is constantly being bombarded with memories of how and why he is there and what put him there. It is shown later on in the sequence that Tyler isnt alone and that he is being stalked by a unknown and unseen beast. We decided that Tyler was going to be dressed in ripped trousers and a dark hooded jacket, this emphasises his mysterious nature and also allows more young males to identify with him. We modelled our protagonist after the character Charlie Pace in the hit us TV show LOST. A television show about a plane crash that leaves a group of survivors stranded out on a deserted island. Pace is a mysterious character that among the group of survivors believes he should have died in the crash at the start of the series. Seclusion Both characters; Tyler and Pace are both secluded in their respected portrayals. Pace being secluded on an island surrounded by others. However, Tyler is alone, secluded from society. He is being hunted and he is alone with no one and nothing to protect him, people of the lower/ working class are the ones who usually have to fend for themselves while the upper class watch on and pry while they (lower class) build up their financial standings, until their ready to be oppressed back down into their starting class. This is shown in my sequence where Tyler is constantly being watched and toyed with by the beast, in this scenario Tyler represents the working class and the beast represents the upper class.

Costume We modelled Tylers appearance after Charlie paces as we thought his character was similar and also his appearance had a distinctive look to it, it allowed the audience to see the struggle and pain he has gone through. We tried our hardest to replicate his look while still trying to be original.

The choice of colour for Tylers costume was influenced by the stereotypes that are given to the youth in modern society as young people are shown to be dressed in dark to mid light colour clothes wearing hoodies and being disruptive to the public. Also, the colour grey is usually represented as dull and empty, it is also linked to the lower class as in many films and television programmes the poor are dressed in dull clothing with few differences in there appearances. I wanted to add this in with the sequences underlining view on status and class.
