2 22 October 2013 Tyranny Speech: Mass Media Today, fellow students, we live in a world of great complexity. Our world, our society is constantly changing, morphing, presenting us with diverse puzzles and colossal conundrums. These issues are going to be for us to solve. Our generation: we will be the leaders of countries, the scientists discovering cures for cancer, the vanquishers of global warming. We will hold the future of our planet and the human race in our hands. The world leaders of today know this; they see us as conduits for accomplishing what they never could in their day and age. They seek to use us, to control us, to have us achieve their goals years from now. Our freedom of choice, of expression, our will to do what we feel is right would be constrained by the whims of todays authorities. How do they hope to accomplish this? Through the overwhelming power of mass media. Im sure that many of you watch news programs; they are a great way to inform yourself about the issues of the world. The news is also useful for helping us establish our own opinions about these issues, but all forms of mass media such as the news are inundated with bias. Political, religious, economic, social, these forms of bias are present in every news report on television, every website on the internet, and every article in the newspapers. Each of these so-called impartial sources of information actually has their own motives, many of which are passed down from superior authority figures. The great news giants of America for instance, many of them have political affiliations that influence their reporting. These superiors who control the giants of reporting would attempt to

Hancock 2 overwhelm us with messages preaching that their respective methods for solving the worlds problems are best. They would each try to drown out their opponents with directives, but for us the end result is the same. We would get pulled in directions that we would have no control over. Manipulated into fulfilling the whims of our predecessors. Prevented from doing what we feel is right because all of our lives, weve been told to do otherwise. Enslaved by the power of mass media. This phenomena is the true purpose of mass media: to control us, the future world-movers. We cannot, will not, allow for this abominable restriction of rights to take place. We must stand up for ourselves; protest the restriction of our freedom of expression. If we as a generation can work together, we can end this tyranny. It would not be an easy task, for the jungle of manipulation is thick and tough and its branches encompass much ground and are embedded in many parts of our society. But we can do it. All it would take for us to unite under a common goal: to protest the power of mass media to influence how we think. We need a universal drive to not be sheep to the manipulating wolves of mass media, because we know what might happen if such a restriction of rights were to continue. The world would continue to groan on, propelled by outdated ideas and principles that no longer work in modern times. We would exhaust our reserves of creativity and knowledge, because we would only know what our predecessors thought was right, even if they were wrong. The world would run out of new ideas and innovations and we would be stuck in a rut as a race; unable to move forward. However, we can change this series of events. If we rise against the tyranny that is mass media, united as a generation of independent thinkers, we can shift this imbalance. Then the future would be a brighter one. We would become the worlds leaders, and armed with our own ideas and moral principles, we will change the world for the better. Our race will continue to progress fueled by our

Hancock 3 knowledge and creativity. From dying to thriving: this will be the future of our human race if we can enact the end of mass medias tyranny. And so I ask you fellow students, dont be sheep being subjugated by the wolves of mass media, be the wolves yourselves, ensuring that you have control of all of your feelings and ideas.
