TEACHERS RESOURCE DISK OF PRINTABLE EXTENSION ACTIVITIES FOR TOP NOTCH

Contents Overview
Purpose and Usage of the Teachers Resource Disk This disk contains printable extension activities for use with the Students Book and Teachers Edition. The purpose of the activities is to tailor the Students Book material to best fit your teaching style and beliefs and to best meet the needs of your students. The activities can be used in addition to the material in the Students Book or can provide an alternative type of presentation or practice opportunity. All the activities are optional and are not needed for the complete course. The disk icon ( ) in the Teacher's Edition and Lesson Planner signals where an extension activity worksheet is available. Open this disk on your computer. Download the worksheet and make enough copies of the worksheet for your students. You can choose to have students do these activities either as homework or in class, individually or in pairs. This disk contains the following printable extension activities: Grammar Self-Checks The Grammar Self-Checks encourage students to take a close look at the grammar structures taught in the Students Book lessons and discover the underlying grammar rules for themselves. They can be used in two ways. If you prefer an inductive grammar approach, use them as an alternative to presenting the grammar charts in the Students Book. If you prefer a more deductive approach, use them to confirm understanding of the grammar point after presenting the grammar charts in the Students Book. A Grammar Self-Check activity consists of two parts: (1) example sentences containing the target structure for students to study, and (2) a follow-up completion activity (Figure It Out) focusing on the relevant grammar rules. The grammar rules in Figure It Out are carefully worded so that students can complete them by studying the examples in the Grammar box. Vocabulary Cards The Vocabulary Cards are enlarged versions of the vocabulary presented in the Students Book. You can use these cards for the presentation of new words in a unit or for review in the form of competition and games. Make enough copies for your students and cut the cards individually before class. Afterwards, keep the cut cards so they may be reused in later units. Cumulative Vocabulary Activities The Cumulative Vocabulary Activities provide meaningful and cumulative practice of new words students learn in the Students Book. Many of them incorporate learning strategies, personalization, and critical thinking. You may wish to use these activities at the end of a unit to review words previously learned or even later as vocabulary refresher.

Extra Reading Comprehension Activities The additional reading activities are intended to supplement the activities that follow each reading in the Students Book. They consist of two sets of activities: (1) basic comprehension questions, and (2) critical-thinking questions. You may choose to use these extra reading activities in several ways: right after reading the article, right after doing the reading activities in the Students Book, or as an alternative to the reading activities in the Students Book. Learning Strategies There are several learning strategy activities for every unit, including a variety of reading strategies, listening strategies, vocabulary-building strategies, and speaking strategies. In addition to learning the strategies, students get practice in applying them. Each strategy corresponds to a Students Book activity and can be further applied to later activities as well. Pronunciation Activities These interactive pair work activities are designed to provide further practice of the pronunciation lessons in the Students Book. Pronunciation Supplements These complete pronunciation lessons provide opportunities to learn and practice additional key English pronunciation features including rhythm, stress, and intonation. Each corresponds to the language of the Students Book unit, including the Conversation Models. Top Notch Pop Song Activities Because the Top Notch Pop songs feature grammar and vocabulary from the units they accompany, the songs are an excellent opportunity to reinforce language. The activities provide listening comprehension practice, classification of vocabulary, and cloze activities that reinforce target grammar and vocabulary from the lyrics. Pair Work Cards The Pair Work Cards are designed to be used with the Conversation Pair Work that accompanies Lessons 1 and 2 of each unit of the Students Book. Each Conversation Model is divided into two cards, one with Student As part and one with Student Bs part, with blank spaces in which each student can personalize his or her part. In this way, students get guided practice and an opportunity to manipulate each model, inserting their own words and ideas, thus making key social language unforgettable. They are a great way to get students out of the book to more actively converse with each other. Writing Process Worksheets The Writing Process Worksheets are step-by-step guides that students can use to complete the writing tasks in the Students Book. Each includes a prewriting activity to generate ideas and a Feedback Checklist for peer feedback and editing. Graphic Organizers The Graphic Organizers in some units of the Teachers Edition have been enlarged for your convenience so you can distribute them to your students. Many of them incorporate learning strategies, personalization, and critical thinking.
