Isolated converters. Operation and design issues of the phase controlled converter: uncontrolled and controlled configurations. The nature of harmonic corruption and power factor problems. Commutation overlaps and their effects. Inversion in phase controlled converters. Phase control strategies. Control model of the converter DC- motor model, Speed control loop for separately exited DC motor drive The switch mode voltage source inverter (VSI): design and operational issues. Square wave and quasi-square wave inverter; PWM control strategies. Harmonic corruption and power factor problems. Precautionary measures for inverter operation. Current controlled VSIs; space vector modulation techniques; applications. The current source inverter (CSI): operational issues. Base drivers for BJTs and Darlingtons; gating circuits for thyristors; driving circuits for insulated gate devices. Snubber circuits for different devices. The AC power controller: modes of operation, power factor and harmonic problems, applications. The cycloconverter: operation and disadvantages.
