THE ROUND UP
Kim Rosen Named Woman of the Year Lismore Leading in Business Information
Member for Ballina, Don Page, recently announced that Kim Rosen from Brunswick Heads is the 2014 Ballina Electorate Woman of the Year. Kim is certainly a worthy recipient of this recognition. She has been a great champion of the Brunswick Heads Community since moving to the area in 1997, Mr Page said. Mrs Rosen has been instrumental in getting the family friendly events off the ground for which Brunswick Heads is now renowned. They include the Kites and Bikes Festival, Old & Gold Festival and the Mullum2Bruns Paddle. As the former Executive Ofcer of the Brunswick Heads Chamber of Commerce, Kim has been the driving force behind the revitalisation of Brunswick Heads over the last decade, Mr Page said. Kim was involved in the development of the Taking Care of Brunswick Tourism Management Plan in 2005 leading to the establishment of the Brunswick Heads Visitor Information Centre in 2006 which is fully self-funded and open 7 days a week. Mr Page said. On behalf of the Ballina Electorate I thank her for her dedication and energy in working for her community. I am pleased that she is receiving this recognition for her efforts, Mr Page said.
Lismore Chamber of Commerces key driving goal is to create a strong, united and thriving business community. As part of this commitment the Chamber has a number of business initiatives running including the 2014 Business Accelerator Tri-Series. The Tri-Series aims to provide fast paced, effective and inspired knowledge that business owners and managers can implement in their business straight away. The chamber has sourced a number of high calibre speakers including Workplace relations expert Alana Paterson, Customer Service Extraordinaire Bob Ansett and Norco's successful CEO Brett Kelly. Making the series a triple not to be missed event. Next instalments are on 2nd April and 7th May. We also have planned for 2014 our Workplace Updates. These are held on a biannual basis to give members and local businesses an update on matters relating to key areas in WHS and industrial relations. The rst half of 2014 will be mainly shaped by the legacy of past legislation. There are new provisions in awards, changes to the FW Act, and more positively, the legacy of the reform of NSW workers' compensation legislation has given rise to many changes at WorkCover particularly affecting small business. Bullying, managing sick leave and the new consultation provisions: all this and more will be presented in this must attend event. For more information go to: www.lismorechamber.com.au
Byron United is showcasing an impressive line-up of themed and education based events this year that offer something for everyone. Starting out with a Forum in February saw a packed room at the Byron Bay Community Centre. Simon Richardson spoke broadly of his vision for our future and Ken Gainger outlined some impressive nancial outcomes for the 18 months of the new council's term. Our rst luncheon on 6th March was a sell-out success in honour of International Women's Day at The Byron at Byron Resort and raised proceeds for NSW Cancer Council. The day united women and men to inspire change and celebrated the achievements of women in the Byron Shire featuring special guest panellists Belinda Jeffrey, Samantha Gowing, Trish Springsteen and
Jennifer St George. Byron Bay had 5 registered sites for Clean up Australia Day this year and championed the clean up in the centre of town from Jonson St to Middleton St, Bay Lane to Marvel St, Surf Alley and the Woolworths Car Park. We hauled away 14 bags of rubbish - great work team BU! The Chamber recently assisted Council with auditing black spots and advocating improved street lighting on behalf of businesses in the CBD precinct and has formally provided Council with a letter of support for a crime prevention grant application that will hopefully provide funding to carry out these infrastructure improvements. hatever industry you are in, an Australian Apprenticeship can provide your business with real benets and contribute to your bottom line. No two businesses are the same, which is why Australian Apprenticeships have been designed to be exible, while at the same time providing nationally recognised quality training developed by industry for industry. Australian Apprenticeships cover all apprenticeships and traineeships, combining time at work with training and can be fulltime, part-time or school-based. With over 500 occupations there will be an Australian Apprenticeship to suit your business. They are available in a variety of qualication levels in both traditional trades, as well as a diverse range of emerging careers in most sectors of business and industry. Your new apprentice could be a student or school-leaver, a person re-entering the workforce or an adult worker simply wishing to change careers. Each of these people brings with them a diverse set of skills, experience and energy to your workplace. Its up to you to tailor an apprenticeship to suit your business needs and that ts with your team. The relationship of taking on an apprentice is a 2-way thing; the apprentice receives training and experience whilst being paid and the business gains a new loyal employee keen to impress and learn the way you do business. You tailor the training around your business schedule and the areas where you need expertise. There
are also a number of nancial incentives and packages to support businesses with the nancial burden of taking on apprentices. Apprentices may be granted course credits for any skills they already have, as well as their prior experience in the workplace, potentially reducing their formal training time. As their qualications are competency based apprentices can complete their training sooner if they get to the required skills levels more quickly than usual. Group Training Organisations can organise for you to share an apprentice with another business if you dont have enough work for an ongoing or full-time position, or might not have the range of work available to ensure that your apprentice gains all the necessary skills for your industry. An Australian Apprenticeship can take from one to four years to complete, depending on the type of apprenticeship and the qualication undertaken. On completion, many apprentices are keen to stay on and work for the employer. This is an excellent opportunity for you to recruit the best staff for your business on a try before you buy basis. You get to see how they t with the other staff members and you also get to train them in the specic working practices of your business. At the same time the loyalty from the apprentice is extremely valuable and can have an immeasurable positive effect on your business. So if your business is looking for new talent consider an apprentice or trainee, to nd out more go to: www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au

inding Staff is consistently cited as one of the top problems facing business owners. At the same time Finding Work is consistently cited as one of the top problems facing young jobseekers in our region. The Organisers of the Northern Rivers Careers Expo see these problems as being solutions to each other and they aim to do something about it. Held at the Goonellabah Sports & Aquatic Centre on the 15th & 16th May, the annual Northern Rivers Careers Expo attracts around 2000 school leavers and young jobseekers. The event aims to help them make valid career choices that will lead to secure long-term employment in industries that will enable them to develop a job into a career. Exhibition Organiser, Ashley BurkeSmith comments, Its really tough heading into the real world after leaving school. I remember being asked what I wanted to do when I left school and I struggled to get past Rock Star, Astronaut or Fighter Pilot the pressure on school leavers is huge. Whats great however is that todays school leavers seem so much better informed of real opportunities, they ask great questions and there are some wonderful people in the careers sector working really hard to give them a fair go. This is demonstrated by the impressive list of exhibitors, which includes: major employers, universities, private training providers,
TAFE, apprenticeship groups and government organisations - all keen to assist people towards a genuine career path. Ashley Burke-Smith continues, Im continuously amazed at the positivity and attitude of young people. I had one student visit the Careers Expo and decide on a TAFE course. She completed the course and offered to volunteer at the Careers Expo for work experience and she was brilliant. Sadly she still hadnt found work a year later but shed enjoyed herself so much at the expo that she volunteered again! Naturally I wrote her a glowing reference based on her enthusiasm, honesty, quick thinking and bright personality. I was over the moon when I got a call from a business in Lismore checking her references and conrming they were going to give her a job. It was one of those days that made everything worthwhile! So if youre offering training or have a job vacancy then maybe you should consider the Careers Expo as an opportunity to meet the next generation of employees. Or, if youve ever heard yourself complaining that the youth of today isnt what it once was and that you wish you could nd the right staff then...All they are sayingis give youth a chance. COMMUNICATIONS
here are currently over 2000 telecommunications service providers (SPs) in Australia and most of them offer many different plans and packages. Finding the right provider and (just as importantly) the right plan to suit your needs is becoming an increasingly complex and confusing process. Lets look at landlines for example. Many SPs will offer multiple plans ranging from pay as you go style to bundled plans that include all your calls and an ADSL connection for one at fee each month. Most SPs wont take your call patterns into account when offering you a plan, they will try and sell you on the plan they want to sell, not the plan that best suits your needs. For example, I met a business owner the other day that had just signed up to a $149.99 per month plan for his main landline. The plan fee included line rental, unlimited local, national and calls to mobiles. He was very happy with that structure as it provided him with peace of mind knowing his costs wouldnt increase if the business was making more calls from one month to another. However, when I ran four of his previous bills through our comparison tool I found that he
wasnt making nearly enough calls to justify the plan fee. Had he put the line on a pay as you go style plan he would have saved around $45 a month. So it pays to be vigilant when looking at changing anything on your account, although a plan may sound great when being pitched to you, it doesnt necessarily mean it will save you money. Unfortunately the business owner is now stuck on a 24 month contract and will end up paying over $1,000.00 too much in that time. Some things to be mindful of when looking at a new plan are; the number of calls you make to different destinations (local, national, calls to mobiles, international etc), the duration of the calls to each destination and how much your call patterns uctuate from month to month. Barefoot Telecom offers obligation-free bill comparisons to ensure we nd the best plan to suit your call patterns and save you as much as we can. Plans are also exible so if your needs change in the future, you can change your plan to accommodate the change in call patterns. Call 1300 017 622 to nd out how you can save money on your telecommunications.

ust like the good old manual cashbook (cmon you remember those) desktop accounting software may soon have had its day due to the rise of Cloud Accounting Solutions. The rapid uptake of Cloud / Online Accounting solutions is partially due to the fact that so little of their Desktop Counterparts overall capabilities are actually being used. This makes it easier to transition to internet based systems that are still being built to the levels of functionality of current Desktop solutions and beyond. You could argue that currently Desktop Software is being used whilst Cloud Accounting software is built! Although early adopters have taken the leap, the masses are sitting on the sidelines, waiting for the market to validate who are the suppliers of choice. Like all adoption lifecycles there comes a Tipping Point when the product becomes mainstream (seemingly overnight to the uninitiated) and this is where Cloud Accounting is fast approaching. Although the future destination is clear there exists an uneasy Twilight Zone where both solutions exist and neither dominates. A race to complete the basic functions of Cloud Software to the level of existing Desktop software is well underway. Once complete the discussion will move from comparing features to philosophy and benets which is far more emotive and compelling. Its fascinating to watch how long standing software corporations are grappling with the process of continuing to enjoy the rewards
from their established Desktop software products whilst knowing that their future lies in providing Cloud solutions. Whilst this Twilight Zone exists I wouldnt expect any new ground breaking enhancements to your Desktop software, the developers interests and passion lies rmly in the development of cloud based solutions. So right now you have 2 choices: Continue to nish implementing efcient business systems using your current Desktop Accounting Software as the base (whilst devising your cloud transition strategy). Or, take a leap of faith. Be warned - if you approach the Cloud Solutions in the same incomplete ways as your Desktop days you wont get a different result. Incomplete systems fail to deliver the potential benets whether on your desktop or in the cloud. Worse, you could be taking a backwards step, particularly if you havent articulated what you wish to achieve by transitioning to the Cloud. This will often involve Re-learning a completely new program and paradigm in the way you work whilst hopefully tying down those efciency loose ends which remained in your Desktop software set up. So whilst the destination is set the course and duration of the journey is unknown - one thing for certain is that we all need to Prepare for and Embrace Change!

ow and then you come across a business that still runs like it's in the 1960s. It's usually a restaurant, small supermarket, petrol station or a little shop. There's a cat or a sleeping dog somewhere. The oorboard creaks. There is little sunlight. Somehow, this business survives, they may in fact be doing OK. The food is good. There remains a loyal customer base and little competition in the neighbourhood. The business is running on autopilot. But theyre making one big mistake: "Sorry, we don't accept credit cards." Or, "We only accept credit cards for purchases over $10." Do you ever hear this at Coffee Club, Just Jeans or Big W? No, and these companies will ruthlessly take business from the 1960s guy if they can. Here's a fact: people aren't carrying cash anymore. You will have to accept credit cards, and soon you will have to accept electronic payments. Don't try to pretend that your customers don't know the real reasons why you don't accept credit cards. You don't want to pay the extra fees, right? You don't want the taxman to know how much you're bringing in, right? Don't you think the ATO is smarter than that? Leo Senese, Morgans ne of the fastest growing sectors of the Australian share market is the Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). ETFs are investment vehicles that provide exposure to a basket of shares, listed property, commodities or currencies. ETFs are primarily passive investments that are similar to managed funds in that they are open-ended (i.e. they can create more units as demand requires) but have the advantage of greater transparency and liquidity through trading on the stock exchange. ETFs also have an advantage over Listed Investment Companies (LICs) in that they can be bought and sold for close to the value of the underlying asset (i.e. index) and do not suffer the discount/premium that sometimes occur in LIC share prices. If the ETFs underlying assets (i.e. a basket of shares) produce income regular income distributions are made to investors. Like managed funds, ETFs pass on this income untaxed and franking credits can also be passed through. Management Expense Ratios (MERs) are also very low ranging from as little as 0.09% to 1.1% for some actively managed offerings. Given the strong growth in ETFs, the range of funds on offer has now become very wide and the sector has + $10 billion in total asset value. A snapshot of the types of ETFs on offer includes:

IT
hat is a terminal server and are they still relevant in business today? Well lets rst start with a brief history lesson. Back in the early days of computing hard drives were the size of washing machines and an ofce was considered ahead of the game if they had a computer yes thats A computer (and a specially trained computer operator). In more modern times a common ofce design used to be, and still often is, a mainframe which centralised the computing resources and users had dumb terminals which had a minimal amount of computing power, just enough to connect to the mainframe. Fast forward a few decades and we may not have ying cars and hover boards, but we do have affordable and accessible computers which can do most of the work we require for business and pleasure. So is there still a need for centralisation of resources, programs and les? In my experience the answer is yes and here are a few reasons why it makes sense to not only have a Terminal server but have it located in the Cloud. In a nutshell, a Terminal server gives users a workspace with desktop, start menu, documents etc. There are many benets of a terminal server: Central point of access for all staff documents, programs etc. Ease of maintenance any changes to the IT setup only need to be done in one place not on each computer e.g. new printer, new program.
Consistent working environment. When logging in from home, in a meeting or in the ofce, you have access to the same working environment. Use the resources of the server doesnt rely on having powerful computers. In fact many use Thin Clients, a cut down ruggedized version of a PC that is low maintenance. Additionally, there are benets to having a terminal server as Cloud based: Server resources and user licences are completely scalable up and down on a month-to-month basis. The cost is an operational expense rather than a capital one. No disaster recovery issues or costs involved in hosting IT infrastructure in your own ofce. Multiple layers of redundancy which is not possible to achieve of a smaller scale e.g. cloud hosted servers are in a datacentre with multiple sources of power and internet. BIZ TIPS
1. Realistic time frames which suit your business life cycle, i.e., rescue, improve or grow and whether it is start up vs established. Think what your business will look like in 3 years and implement actions for the next 3 months that will take you toward that vision. It is also critical to have a personal vision to ensure congruence between it and the business vision. 2. Flexibility. Businesses today operate in a vibrant, fast, uid, ever changing environment. Disruptive technology is the new Holy Grail. The old set and forget of business plans is long gone. You need to ne tune and adjust the plan according to performance and market changes. The ability to switch business modes and models quickly is essential. 3. Accurate Data is critical in the preparation and monitoring phases of your business plan in order to test your assumptions and results. Many small businesses lack this critical element. Like my mother who traded her trusted Kingswood for a new Toyota and read the tacho instead of the speedo the results were disastrous. Many businesses, like my mother, are using the wrong measurement dial e.g., cash at bank, last 12 months P&L, thinking this is an accurate and sufcient performance tool. Unfortunately the results are equally disastrous and stressful as my mothers driving performance! A written business plan is an essential element for any business irrespective of size. Ive helped many businesses to develop a plan that is simple to read, actionable and delivers superior results. Its like a road map to business growth, enabling business owners to get their life back. Whats in a Name?
o whats in a name? Well quite often your business depends on the name youve built up, it becomes synonymous with your brand and the qualities your business is renowned for. Think Ferrari, the name conjures up images of fast, red, sleek bodied cars, Coke, young, happy people, ice cold drinks on a hot day. What if suddenly you had to change your name? Im not talking a planned rebrand, new artwork, a makeover, I mean completely change everything and not because you wanted to but because you had to. This is what can happen if you forget to renew your trade marks and domain names. Keeping tabs on when these are due can be critical to your business. What many people dont realise is that trade mark and domain name registrations are generally issued on a rst-to-apply basis. Registration provides exclusive use rights within the nominated categories and for a limited time. One would therefore think securing ownership of those assets and then holding on to them would be a high priority for all business owners and brand managers. Failing to secure registration or allowing it to lapse can severely hinder business operations and dilute the value of your brand. It can leave you exposed to a competitor (local or overseas), or held hostage to the demands of a mischievous
squatter or rogue distributor. You might be surprised just how frequently this happens. One such instance happened in the US in late January when New Jersey Transit failed to register seven trade marks including its logo and well-known slogan, NJ Transit the way to go. The error was costly, both from a nancial perspective and a reputational one. As the states public transport corporation, NJ Transit operates 230-plus bus routes and 11 rail lines, connecting New York and Philadelphia and providing 223 million passenger trips each year. According to reports, this is not the rst time NJ Transit has mismanaged its intellectual assets: the NJ Transit website was taken ofine three years ago because the agency allowed its domain name to expire. The important lesson to be learnt from that big operator is to audit your intellectual assets and make sure you know exactly who owns what and when renewals are due. Ongoing and effective management of your trade marks and domain names is vital if you seek to protect and leverage your intellectual property. Plus, the price is modest when compared to nancial and reputational cost you will incur if you take the NJ Transit route.

ENERGY
He said the resources were continually being updated. Upcoming additions include a safety video for people transporting high loads; a cotton harvest safety video; and information about electrical safety when excavating. Essential Energy can also provide electrical hazard awareness sessions to organisations free of charge. These can be arranged by telephoning 13 23 91 and asking to speak to a member of the Public Safety Team. Keep Safe at Work Always check for power lines whenever you use farm machinery like grain augers, harvesters and irrigation pipes. Water is a conductor of electricity so be careful when using water irrigation or water jets near power lines. Check all cords and connections of your machinery and workshop equipment and make sure they're in good condition. If you're crop dusting, identify where the power lines are located in the area. Underground power lines are often buried only 500mm below the surface so be careful when digging or excavating. Electrical equipment can be damaged during storms. Dont operate any equipment if theres any sign of damage. Never use tools or appliances with damaged power cords. Don't use power tools in wet or damp areas. Wear proper footwear at work, an electric shock is more likely to be fatal if you're working with bare feet.

to the Minister for Communications, to the region to meet with a number of companies and residents so he could hear rst-hand how mobile black spots are effecting businesses. Mr Fletcher told me he was impressed with the discussions and said it would assist him in developing the Governments $100 million program to improve mobile coverage. The package has two elements: the $80 million Mobile Network Expansion Program to improve coverage along major transport routes, in small communities and in areas prone to natural disasters, and $20 million to improve coverage in locations with unique problems. As you probably would have heard, the Government has also signed a Free Trade Agreement with Korea, which is a major win for our rural producers and food manufacturers, and we are hoping to soon sign similar deals with Japan and China. Lastly, I would like to plug my new website www.kevinhogan. com.au. Its very different from your traditional politician website. I have designed it to assist businesses and general community. It is still being rolled out but please take a look at the Business Hub which will tell you what Im doing for businesses in Page and also news from our local Chambers of Commerce. I am very interested in your feedback.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT
POLLIES POINTS
New official statistics show a significant positive turnaround for the New South Wales economy since the change of Government three years ago. Under Labor, New South Wales had the worst economic growth, jobs growth and business confidence of any State. We are now ranked second on those fronts, so the Government is on track to meet its commitment of making New South Wales number one again. That is not to say that business is easy, particularly in regional New South Wales. There is still too much red tape and unnecessary burdens like the carbon tax which makes energy more expensive than it needs to be. It is time the Federal Opposition accept last Septembers election result and the mandate which the Abbott Government was given to abolish the carbon tax. Nevertheless your State Government is working hard to cut Government waste and debt while maintaining front line services and investing more in infrastructure. As a result, and unlike Labor States, New South Wales has managed to maintain its AAA credit rating. This matters because it reduces the cost of servicing the enormous debt we inherited. The less we have to spend on debt, the more we can invest in the things that matter.
The recent falls in crime gures are not just good news for local families but also small business. Criminal activity, particularly so-called anti-social behaviour crime like grafti, vandalism and alcohol fuelled violence, is a major burden on business. It is costly; it pushes up insurance premiums and takes time away from running the business. This is one reason why your North Coast Nationals MPs led a successful campaign to secure an extra 90 police ofcers for local area commands in our region. The New South Wales Police Association conrms this is the biggest increase in over a decade. Another great Government law and order initiative from a small business perspective is our You Spray, You Pay laws which require juvenile grafti vandals to appear before the court for a grafti offence and can require offenders to clean up their mess. The Government also recalled Parliament early this year to pass much tougher laws against alcohol-fuelled violence and in particular so-called king-hit single punch attacks. I supported these tough new laws because it doesnt matter whether you are in Tweed Heads or Kings Cross: there is no place for drunken thugs on our streets. You and your customers deserve a safe neighbourhood.
