SHARE Email thismore IN TIMES LIKE THESE DRAW NEAR TO GOD NELSON PRICE JAMES 4:7-10 8/30/98 JESUS CHRIST said, "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid" (John 14:27). Memorize that. Put it on the screen saver of your mind and reflect on it often. Invest your life in it and it will pay eternal dividends. We need such a truth to which to anchor our soul in our societies tempestuous sea.

Jesus Christ also said there would come a day in which there would be "distress among the nations, with perplexity" and "men's hearts failing them for fear and expectation of those things which are coming on the earth" (Luke 21: 25, 26). Is this that day? The international money market crisis seems to be worsening by the day and our own economy beginning to quake as a consequence. There is a moral crisis in the White House that appears to be being condoned by a majority of Americans and youth confused as to what is right or wrong. Because of our tendency to assert there are no absolutes and all truth is relative we have lost our moral compass. Truth is now spoken of as being subjective. That is I alone, the subject, determine truth. There is no absolute objective truth in the marketplace. What influence is this having on our society? Extensive studies show that youth who refuse to accept objective standards that govern their lives are: 65% more likely to mistrust people. Why shouldn't they? 48% more likely to cheat on exams. Why not! 36% more likely to lie to their parents. Twice as likely to lack purpose in life. Twice as likely to be resentful. People without objective truth, that is, the Bible to guide them live by what is called "cultural ethics." That is whatever the ethic of the culture that is what is right. Whatever the culture approves is proper. In light of that America is headed toward a deeper abyss of immorality than ever imagined. By approving of the immorality made so public in Washington we are saying it is our new "cultural ethic." There is a problem with that. Many saw the movie "Schindler's List" which depicted the horror of the holocaust. Was there anything wrong with the atrocities of the holocaust? After the war when the Nazi officials were tried for war crimes in Nuremberg, Germany their defense was "how can you come from another culture and condemn what we did when our culture said it was acceptable?"

In condemning them the world court said there is something above culture that determines what is right or wrong. We say that something is the Scripture. The international threat of terrorism is causing us to barricade our monuments and cower ourselves. There is indeed "distress among the nations, with perplexity." In Times Like These

Revelation 13:11-14 (RealAudio Version available)

I would like for you to open your Bibles to 2nd Timothy, chapter 3 and Im going to read the first verse for our scripture this morning. We had read in our hearing, Revelation chapter 13, a few verses beginning with verse 11. Here the disciple John has envisioned a beast coming up out of the earth, but before that second beast he had seen a beast coming up out of the sea. And now, let us read 2nd Timothy chapter three, verse one in which Paul now sends a letter to his friend Timothy, and he says This know also that in the last days perilous times shall come. The message this morning Ive entitled, In Times Like These. Let us pray. Loving Father, which art in Heaven, in times like these we recognize that You are soon to come. And so, as we pause now in this service to invite Your presence to this particular desk, we ask that You would take Nathaniel Higgs and use him as Your mouthpiece for the next few moments. Well be careful to give You the praise, the honor and the glory. In Jesus name we pray, Amen. We live today in the very best of times. And yet, we live in the worst of times. We live in the best of times in that knowledge and technology facilitate life. And yet, we live in the very worst

of times in that the same knowledge and technology threaten our lives. With the knowledge and technology of these times, scientists were able to clone the worlds first mammal, Dolly, a sheep. And it was just a few years later that a religious sect known as the Rialians claimed to have cloned the worlds first human being, whom they named Eve. And with egotistical arrogance as though they were challenging the very intellect of the Almighty, they shake their fist into the face of God when they say we are standing at the threshold of eternal life. Dr. Stewart Newman, a biologist at the New York Medical College wants to patent his version of a modern day chimera. Now a chimera is a mythical creature that is half human and half animal. And Dr. Newman explains how he plans to do this. He says all you have to do is to take the embryonic stem cell of one species and implant it into the embryo of another species. And then insert that into the womb of either species and he says a chimera is on the way. Now he goes on to explain how this will be an advantage to us. He says it will have the strengths of both kingdoms, because it will have the higher intelligence of a human being. It can reason, it can think, but at the same time it will have the brute strength of an animal. And he says we can train these creatures to go out and perform tasks that we human beings find undesirable to perform and we wouldnt have to worry about human rights. Now the patent office refuses to issue the patent for this and so Dr. Newman has taken them to court. Thats the last Ive heard about it. But he goes on to say that later on we can develop these creatures to have hard shells on them, natural armor, such as a turtle or such as the armadillo and we can train them to go out and fight battles for their masters. Sound like science fiction. But so did walking on the moon 50 years ago. When the children of men were building the tower of Babel, God said nothing will be restrained from them that they have imagined to do. Let us go down. I believe that its time for Jesus to come down again and I want to be ready when he comes, what do you say? Theres a rock bottom decline in moral and corporate ethics. The Kenneth Lays and Martha Stewarts have breeched consumer confidence. The threat of terrorism has created the Department of Homeland Security. Nations cannot agree upon a peace plan. The gap between the affluent and the indigent is widening and the stress of just staying alive on this planet is overwhelming. Today more than ever we live in perilous times. The unrelenting, mercurial pace of life on this planet would make us want to cry out and say just stop the world, because I want to get off. And so, Paul in his letter to his friend Timothy reminds him that the coming days ahead before Jesus comes will be filled with peril and dripping with grief and with difficulty. There was a time when Adventist pastors could preach a message of health reform, such as proper rest and diet and exercise and this would give us longevity and life but its not necessarily true anymore because there are so many environmental challenges that are threatening our very existences on this planet today. Our fruits and our vegetables have been sprayed with pesticides that have later been discovered to be carcinogenic. And vegetarians can no longer eat lettuce and spinach and green onions that have been irrigated with water from a cow pond where livestock have been present because of the threat of E Coli. Second-hand tobacco smoke is as injurious to the bystander as it is to the smoker himself. And global warming is another threat that affects pulmonary processes in our bodies. And I heard just a week ago, that 2006 was the hottest year that they had on record

since theyve been keeping records back in the middle of the 1800s. And we blame El Nino when we really ought to blame El Diablo. New diseases are emerging faster in our society than were able to come up with a cure for them. We have the avian flu that is threatening to be a global pandemic. Before then we had SARS, a severe acute respiratory syndrome disease, and the amazing thing about it was no one knew how it started, no one knew how it was communicated, and no one knew how to cure it. But there was a Chinese physician by the name of Dr. Xie Yingjun according to the Washington Post that was studying the residents of the Guangdong province of China to determine if there was any relationship between SARS and their exotic diet that consisted of monkey brains, snake and cat soup and stir-fried rats. But what Dr. Yingjun was about to discover was what Seventh-day Adventists already know. And I will read it to you from Counsels On Diets And Foods. Disease never comes without cause. The way is prepared and the disease is invited by the disregard of the laws of health. They discovered new diseases that are being found in cattle that are loaded up on trucks going to the slaughter-house. Not while they are in the barnyard, but only when they load up on the truck going to the slaughterhouse that a mucous forms in their eyes and there noses, and the veterinarians have yet to discover what causes it. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, commonly referred to as mad cow disease has brought a halt to much of the beef market in England and Canada for awhile. And it was even scaring folk in the United States and many have joined the ranks of vegetarianism. And then ebola virus once thought to be confined to monkeys and apes on the continent of Africa is now killing thousands of human beings on that continent. The Newsweek magazine refers to these time as the new age of epidemics. But Jesus refers to them as signs of the times. It is in times like these dear friends, that we need an anchor of hope. We cannot expect a medical breakthrough that will bring us hope and good health. We cannot expect the United Nations to pass some resolution that will bring about world peace. We cannot expect the Congress of the United States to pass some law that will bring us prosperity. Our hope and our trust today must be in the Word of God. It is in times like these that we need an anchor, and the best anchor that we can find in times like these is the anchor upon Jesus Christ, that Solid Rock. The great controversy between the King of Kings and the prince of darkness is about to culminate. And it is centered around a day of worship. You see, the prince wants to be like the King. He wants to be the center of worship. He wants to have his particular day of worship. And he will do whatever he can to gain the allegiance of men. There is no wonder that Ellen White says that the great test of loyalty is going to be the Sabbath. Last Day Events, she says the Sabbath will be the great test of loyalty. So it is in times like these that we need an anchor and the very best anchor is the word of God. In our text this morning, John sees a beast coming up out of the sea. And then he sees another beast coming up out of the earth. Now the second beast that John sees that comes up out of the earth is different from the ferocious beast that John saw come up out of the sea. According to Revelations, chapter 17, verse 15, in prophecy, water represents people. So a beast coming up out of the sea would be an entity or a nation that would be formulated upon many people. But a beast coming up out of the earth then would be a nation or entity formulated upon the scarcity of people. Now there are many other descriptors that would identify what this second beast is. But

most Bible commentators will agree that this beast is the United States in prophecy. And Ill tell you what the author of The Great Controversy has to say about this beast. She sa ys, One nation, and only one meets the specification of this prophecy. It points unmistakably to the United States of America. Now this beast had two horns like a lamb. The icon of tranquility. But yet, in its schizophrenic personality it speaks with the voice of a dragon, the idiogram of ferocity. Two contrasting characteristics of this beast. It looked like a lamb in that its Declaration of Independence sets forth the truth that all men are created equal but yet it speaks with the voice of a dragon with its military power of shock and awe. It looks like a lamb in that it has become the global city of refuge, where the under-privileged and economically depressed can flock to its shores seeking prosperity and freedom. But yet it speaks with the voice of a dragon when its leadership declares, every nation of every region now has a decision to make. You are either with us or you are with the enemy, the terrorists. There is a striking difference between the appearance of the beast and the actions of the beast. It looks kind and humble and gentle, but in its actions it can be persecuting, it can be arrogant. It looks like a lamb when it walks softly, but it speaks with the voice of a dragon when it carries the big stick. Now I want you to notice in chapter 13 of Revelation, that the word worship is used time and time again, or some form of the verb worship, used time and time again. It lets us know that the final chapter of earths history is going to be centered around worship. And I submit that itll be a day of worship. And I want you to note that this second beast, the United States in prophecy, according to the Word of God, causes the earth and them that dwell therein to worship the first beast. Now we know that the power of the first beast was to make war with the saints and overcome them. Thats religious persecution. So we can conclude then that the power of the second beast, the United States in prophecy, is through persecution, that it will cause the inhabitants of the earth through persecution to worship this false religion. Now many people believe that in the United States, because about 83% of the people are Christians, then we ought to pass laws that will elevate their interpretation of Christianity. And back during the last century, about 1961 I believe it was, there was a case in the state of Maryland, McGowan vs. Maryland, in which Maryland had some Sunday blue laws and some Jews took them to court. And the United States supreme court ruled on behalf of the state of Maryland, saying that it is not the establishment of religion for the state to set aside one common day of rest that just may coincide with the common day of rest by the majority. And since that time, in the eight states that comprise the Southern Union, they have formulated 143 Sunday blue laws that are waiting on the books, for the prince to give the nod for their enforcement. Satan gains our cooperation on matters such as a common day of rest for mankind. And then he moves to the point where he wants us to compromise on matters of doctrine such as the Sabbath. Let me illustrate my point. Police entered an apartment in Houston, Texas about four or five years ago, and they encountered to adult males in a homosexual act. Since this was contrary to the sodomy laws of Texas, the two were arrested, John Lawrence and Tyrone Garner, and they were carried to jail and they were fined. But the story doesnt end there. You see, John Lawrence sued the state of Texas, and he argued that the state of Texas has no compelling interest as to what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home. And that is a compelling

argument. Really it is. Its probably the same argument that we will use when a national Sunday law is passed. What difference does it make to the state, what day I worship on? There is no compelling interest on the state as to whether I worship on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. But, they lost in the appellate court. Texas upheld their own laws. And so John Lawrence took it to the United States supreme court. And in it he went on to argue not only the compelling interest argument, but he said its a violation of the 14th amendment, equal protection under the law, because opposite sex couples are not fined and jailed so why should same sex couples be fined and jailed. And you know, the supreme court bought that argument, and ruled on behalf of John Lawrence in a landmark decision known as Lawrence vs. the State of Texas. Now in the wake of this revolutionary decision, gay couples came out of the closet. And they began to demand, we want to be married like anyone else. And they filed suits in a number of states, but perhaps the most pertinent one was the one in Massachusetts which was Goodrich vs. the health department of Massachusetts, in which the supreme court of that state ruled and ordered the health department to begin issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples. Now every bible-toting Christian ought to know that homosexuality is not approved in the word of God. It is the same sin that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for. And Satan has taken an institution that was ordained by God and perverted into an abomination unto God, so that what started off as the Massachusetts Bay Colony back in 1628 now has ended up as the Massachusetts gay colony in 2002. Now some who oppose this abomination say what we need to do is to come up with a constitutional amendment and stop this foolishness once and for all. We need to pass laws that will determine what marriage is, and well stop this once and for all. But is this the right direction for us to go? Lets look at it from a different angle. God created two institutions in the garden during creation week. On the sixth day of the week God created the institution of marriage. On the seventh day of the week God created the institution of the Sabbath. Now if congress can pass legislation to determine or to define the parameters of the first institution which is marriage or if we can pass a constitutional amendment that will determine what the first institution is, can you see that we have set in place that congress can come in and set the parameters for Gods second institution which is the Sabbath. And then the encyclical from the Vatican city can easily be accomplished. The last one from the late Pope, Pope John Paul II, says that we industrialized nations of the earth ought to pass laws that will elevate the sanctity of Sunday as a sacred day of rest. You can see now why Ellen says that the Sabbath will be the great test of loyalty. Satan takes those things that we agree upon in common such as morality and then he will move to gain our cooperation on matters of doctrine, such as the Sabbath. Let me give you another quick illustration. Michael Newdow who was an attorney and a physician, an avowed atheist. He is a practicing physician but hes a licensed attorney. And he disagreed with his daughter having to say the flag salute one nation under God and so he took the school district and the state of California and the United States congress to court, and he argued that this was the establishment of religion. And the ninth circuit court of appeals agreed with him. And heres what the court said. One nation under God is the same as one nation under Vishnu, one nation under Zeus or one nation under no god because none of these professions can

be neutral toward religion, hence it is impermissible government endorsement of religion. And friends, looking at it strictly from a legal standpoint, Im afraid the court is right. But such an unpopular decision brought an immediate response from the White House and from congress and from evangelicals. And so, they introduced in both houses, the senate and in the house of representatives in the last congress, they introduced bills that would remove from the jurisdiction of the federal court system anything that had to do with the pledge of allegiance. Now you know that the congress can set the jurisdiction for the federal court system. Now this may seem to be like something insignificant. But, if you had a matter that may be unconstitutional but yet at the same time would have wide spread public support, then all you have to do is to have congress remove it from the jurisdiction of the federal court system and you could have an unconstitutional law that could stand by public proclamation or by executive fiat. If this were a national Sunday blue law, all congress would have to do, and it would not be constitutional, but all congress would have to do would be to remove it from the jurisdiction of the federal court system and you could actually end up with a national Sunday blue law. Now thats a hypothetical situation but dear friends, its something to be concerned about. Satan gains our cooperation on matters that we have in common, such as patriotism, and then he will move for a compromise on issues of doctrine, such as the Sabbath. Conscience of minority beliefs, once thought to be protected by the Constitution of the United States is now under siege by judicial activism and by public proclamation. The president of the religious coalition a few months ago made this statement in one of her meetings in her introductory remarks. She says, We are here on a mission to save America. We need to bring the spiritual and the legislative together and to swell the Christian ranks of our government. And at the same meeting, judge Roy Moore, the former chief justice of the supreme court of Alabama was there and he had this to say. He said, The idea of a wall of separation between church and state is a fable. No phrase is more widely used or widely abused. And the mood of the meeting was something like this. America is on the decline, and we as Christians and Catholics are going to have to join hands together and do something about it. And while were going to have to pass some laws that will have an adverse effect upon some of the minority religions that are in the nation, were going to have to do so and were going to have to do it, and Im quoting now for the good of the nation. This statement in part fulfills the very words of the Great Controversy that says, and Im reading from page 443, In order for the United States to form an image of the beast, the religious power must so control the civil government that the authority of the state will be employed by the church to accomplish her own ends. You ought to know that there is another movement and I think it started right here in Tennessee. Its called the Christian Reconstruction. And Gary DeMar, the head-man of this describes a new order in which the government of the United States will be staffed with God-trusted servants. And he says its a society in which only the faithful are citizens and democracy is a distasteful memory of the past. And he says that the primary existence of any state government is to conquer this planet for God. Now he is not talking about the earth made new. And hes not talking about when we get to heaven, hes talking about right now. He is saying that the purpose of the government of the United States is to make Christians out of everybody in the world. Now that may be the purpose

of the church but not the purpose of the government. Now listen very closely to what he has to say here. He says, In winning a nation to the gospel, the sword, as well as the pen, must be used. If you read the article, hell tell you he will give folk about three years to join the church. And then if they dont join the church they need to be put to death. Thats a radical movement. But the movement is prophecy fulfilling, for Revelation predicts that it is America, that second beast, that will cause inhabitants of the earth to worship in a false religion. One of the most dangerous propositions today is this concept of a Christian nation. Because forced religion at its very best will only create hypocrites. And on its very worst will make martyrs. So what Revelation expresses through the apocalyptic beasts is a universal movement under the leadership of satan to try to obtain allegiance from the inhabitants of the earth for his cause. And in the final crisis, America is going to play a key part in the fulfillment of this prophecy. And so dear friends, our only hope in times like these is to be anchored upon the word of God. The church is going to experience a shaking time such as never seen before. Those who have been anchored to a tel-evangelist, those who are anchored to mamas religion, who are anchored to vegetarianism, who are anchored to their check-books, who are anchored to their education will be shaken away. If you want to survive the shaking time, you have to be anchored to the Rock, Christ Jesus. Jesus Himself talking about the shaking time says that there will arise false christs, theres going to arise false prophets that are going to show signs and wonders that if it were possible the very elect would be deceived. Paul in talking about these delusive times says let no man deceive you by any means, for that day shall not come except there come a falling away first of the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition. Paul says that before the second coming of Christ comes theres going to be a shaking time and some people are going to be shaken away. Some will fall away. Paul further says and no marvel for satan himself is transformed into an angel of light therefore it is no great thing that his ministers also be transformed as ministers of righteousness, whose end shall be according to their works. Our only deliverance in times like these is to be anchored to the Word of God. So if a beautiful angel were to appear before you and tell you that the law of God has been done away with, that the fourth commandment is no longer binding, I want you to just think about what God said in the Old Testament. He says I am the Lord, I change not. I want you to think about what Jesus said in the New Testament. He says, heaven and earth will pass away before one jot or title will be removed from His law. If you are awakened in the middle of the night by the apparition of your departed mother and she has come to advise you of your future, you advise her that the living know that they shall die, but the dead know not anything, neither is there anymore reward for the memory of them is forgotten. Ecclesiastes 9:5. If you want to be able to withstand the shaking times you have to be anchored in the word. If the message comes to you by the messenger that Christ has come and we need to go down to the mall or go down to the stadium where we can see Him, you send a message by the messenger that when my Lord comes behold He cometh in clouds and every shall see Him. Revelation 1:7 If you want to survive the shaking times dear friends, we have to study the word, we have to build a relationship with God. Ellen describes the shaking times. She says many a star we have admired for its brilliance will then go out in darkness. It is in times like these that those who are not anchored to the rock are going to leave the church and become some of the vilest opponents of the truth and of light.

Some will leave the church because of their employers requirement that they work on Sabbath and they lack the faith, the trust, that the God of heaven can provide for their needs. Others will leave the church because the church will not change its Biblical tenets to meet their personal standards and they will go out and join the ranks of societal mediocrity. Then others will leave the church because of what some member said and hurt his or her feelings and so they will leave the church. You see, they have spiritual myopia. They cannot see any further than their neighbors faults. Others will leave the church because of what the treasurer did or what the deacon did or what the elder did or what the pastor did. You see, their relationship is horizontal, it is not vertical. But it doesnt matter why you leave the church, the devil is exuberant whenever he can shake you away from the people of God. If you want to survive the shaking time you have to be anchored in the Word. And so it is in times like these dear friends, we need not be shaken away by unbiblical doctrine or the vain philosophy of some tel-evangelist. The other day I heard on the radio a commercial that said if you want to secure your future, then read the Wall Street Journal and read it every day. And I said to my wife how wrong he is. If you want to secure your eternity read the word of God, and read it every day. For it is the Word of God that will fortify your mind against error. Back during the dark days of world war II, Ruth K. Jones was reading our text that I read this morning. II Timothy 3:1 This know that in the last days, perilous times shall come. The Spirit of God impressed her so that she picked up a pen and began to write the words of our closing song. In times like these we need a Saviour. In times like these we need an Anchor. Be very sure, be very sure, your Anchor holds and grips the solid Rock. Where is your anchor this morning dear friends? Is it upon the Solid Rock? Or is it upon the times in which we live? When a ship comes in to harbor and drops an anchor, if that anchor drags the sludge of the river floor, when the tide comes in that ship will drift away. But if that anchor grips the bedrock of the river floor, a hundred ton freighter will not drift any farther than the tolerance of that anchor. Where is your anchor this morning, dear friends? Lets anchor upon the word of God. The word of God incarnate, Christ Jesus, the solid Rock.
