ORDERING INFORMATION US PATENT NO. 6,926,023 Stock No. 1030000 Model / Description PAAR-Potter Automatic Air Release

The Model PAAR, Potter Automatic Air Release, must be installed at the high point of the re sprinkler system. The PAAR provides automatic venting of trapped air in re sprinkler systems. As a re sprinkler system is lled with water, trapped air migrates to the air vent valve location and is released through the open vent. The air vent valve will automatically close when water reaches the vent. Discharge piping from the air vent valve is piped to a shutoff valve mounted in a water retention pan. The pan retains small amounts of water discharged from the air vent valve during normal operation. In case of failure of the air vent valve closing, the discharged water reaches a specied depth in the pan (approximately 1") and a water-soluble ber element in the shutoff valve dissolves and closes the valve preventing further water discharge. The shutoff valve has a visual indication of operation and a single set of NC contacts rated 24v AC/DC@2A for electronic supervision (Recommended). The shutoff valve is a single-use device and contains no user serviceable parts. Installation: (See Figures 1 - 4) 1. Install a ball valve and the supplied strainer before the air vent valve on the PAAR for servicing of the PAAR. 2. Install the PAAR in a level position at the highest point of the sprinkler system. Use 3/8" threaded rod hangers thru the (2) holes provided in the ange of the pan for additional support.

3. For supervision of the shutoff valve activation, remove and discard the fuse cover from the shutoff valve terminals. Connect the supplied 6'-0" wiring harness connectors to the shutoff valve terminals and make appropriate connections to the Fire Alarm Panel or local annunciator model PSTA (ordered separately) in an approved junction box. An "end of line resistor" (EOLR) must be installed according to the wiring diagram in Fig. 1. 4. Inspection of the PAAR should be performed after installation and lling of the sprinkler system and periodically thereafter in accordance with the applicable NFPA codes and standards and/or the authority having jurisdiction (manufacturer recommends quarterly or more frequently). Note: Inspection shall include checking for activation of the shutoff valve indicated by the red pop-up tab and checking for blockage in the strainer before the air vent and in the cap screen on the outlet pipe. Air Vent & Shutoff Valve Replacement (See Fig. 2 & 3) If inspection reveals activation of the shutoff valve, indicated by a red pop-up tab on the shutoff valve, the air vent valve has failed and must be replaced. The shutoff valve is a single-use device that can not be reset or repaired and must be replaced.

The PAAR Automatic Shut off valve should be supervised and connected to the building's re alarm or to the PSTA. After notication of operation the control valve should be closed and remain closed until replacement parts are installed.

POTTER AUTOMATIC AIR RELEASE
1. Close the ball valve installed before the air vent for servicing of the PAAR. 2. Disconnect the 1/2" union in the piping between the air vent valve and shutoff valve and remove the shutoff valve from the water retention pan. 3. Remove the drain plug from the bottom of water retention pan to drain any water that may have collected in the pan. Reinstall the plug with teon tape. 4. Disconnect the air vent valve and pan assembly from the ball Valve. 5. Remove the (2) 5/16-18 x 1 1/4" lg. hex hd. screws and (2) 1/16" thick spacer washers from the PAAR that attaches the pan to the air vent valve. Retain the screws and washers for the new air vent valve installation. 6. Remove the (2) 5/16-18 x 1" lg. hex hd. screws on the top right side of the new air vent valve. Be sure that the same screws are removed from the new air vent valve that was holding the pan on the old air vent valve. 7. Use the original and longer (2) 5/16-18 x 1 1/4" lg. hex hd. screws to attach the pan to the new air vent valve. Be sure to install the (2) 1/16" thick spacer washers between air vent valve and ange of the pan. Tighten the (2) screws to 18-20 Lbs. torque. 8. Reinstall the original 1/2" brass piping (close nipples, elbow and union) to the new air vent valve using teon tape on all connections. 9. Remove the 1/2" brass piping from the old activated shutoff valve and reinstall on the new shutoff valve using teon tape on all connections. Be sure to match up the piping from the inlet (2" lg. nipple, elbow, close nipple and union) and outlet (2" lg. nipple, elbow, close nipple and 4" lg. nipple) of the old shutoff valve to the inlet and outlet of the new shutoff valve. 10. Install the shutoff valve into the pan with the union connection. The shutoff valve must be installed straight in the pan with approximately 1/4" clearance from the bottom of the shutoff valve and the bottom of the pan. Adjust the piping connections as needed to obtain the required 1/4" clearance. 11. Reinstall the PAAR after the ball valve and in a level position. Use 3/8" threaded rod hanger thru the (2) holes provided in the ange of the pan for additional support. 12. For supervision of the shutoff valve activation, remove and discard the fuse cover from the shutoff valve terminals and reconnect the original wiring harness connectors to the shutoff valve. 13. Open the ball valve and check for proper operation of the air vent valve upon lling of re sprinkler system. 14. Inspection of the PAAR should be performed after installation and periodically thereafter in accordance with the applicable NFPA codes and standards and/or the authority having jurisdiction (manufacturer recommends quarterly or more frequently). Note: Inspection shall include checking for activation of the shutoff valve indicated by the red Pop-up tab and checking for blockage in the strainer before the air vent and in the cap screen on the outlet pipe.
