SIMATIC Controller

General characteristics

Design The S7-300 is made up of a number of compact modular components with small dimensions which can be put together in any combination. This means the controller can be designed to fit the application exactly. Apart from the modules, all you need is a DIN rail to which the modules are fitted and screwed on. This ensures a robust construction which is electromagnetically compatible. The backplane bus is integrated into the modules and is set up by inserting the bus connector. Up to 8 modules can be put together in a row (central controller / expansion unit). Range of CPUs There are various CPUs of different performance levels available for use in the controller. From extensive basic functions (command execution, I/O access, communication via MPI and CP modules) through integrated technology functions and I/O modules to comprehensive communications options - there is always a CPU available to suit your needs. Instruction set The instruction set of the S7-300 includes more than 350 instructions, including the usual STEP 5 and TISOFT operations. Additional functions save time and user memory, e.g. binary processing and 32 bit floating point arithmetic. All the instructions can be used in all blocks (FCs, FBs, OBs). Integrated system functions enable, for example, the processing of interrupts and diagnostics messages. They also save a lot of RAM space as they are integrated in the operating system. Examples Both examples show new, high-performance commands which make programming easier and more efficient.

Example 1: Edge evaluation The command sequence for edge evaluation has been combined into a single function for the purpose of simplicity (the example shows a positive edge). STEP 5 STEP 7 A I 4.0 A I 4.0 AN F 10.0 FP M 10.0 S F 10.0 = M 10.1 = F 10.1 AN I 4.0 R F 10.0

Example 2: indirect addressing A simple solution has also been found to indirect addressing: nearly every instruction can be addressed indirectly and integrated clearly into the program; e.g. opening a data block: STEP 5 STEP 7 DO FW 10 OPN DB [MW10] C DB 0 Two data blocks can be opened at the same time. All the operands within data blocks can be symbolically accessed.

Programming

The S7-300 is programmed using the basic STEP 7 or STEP 7 Lite software. This allows the full functionality of the S7-300 to be used simply and easily. Both versions incorporate functions for every phase of an automation project, from implementation to start-up, testing and servicing. STEP 7 Lite STEP 7 Lite is a cost-effective software solution for implementing stand-alone applications using SIMATIC S7-300. STEP 7 Lite is characterized by the speed at which you can start programming and by the simplicity of the project handling. It is not compatible with supplementary SIMATIC software packages, e.g. Engineering Tools. Programs written in STEP 7 Lite can also be processed using STEP 7. STEP 7 STEP 7 is used for the implementation of relatively large or complex applications, where, for example, higher level languages or graphical design languages (see Engineering Tools) are used for programming or function or communication modules are required. STEP 7 is compatible with additional SIMATIC software packages, e.g. Engineering Tools. Engineering Tools Engineering Tools provide additional options for programming automation solutions on a simple, function-oriented basis. The following tools are available for programming: S7-SCL (Structured Control Language), a higher-level language based on PASCAL for the programming of SIMATIC S7/C7 controllers S7-GRAPH for graphical configuration of sequential controls for SIMATIC S7/C7 S7-HiGraph for the graphical description of sequential or asynchronous processes with status diagrams for SIMATIC S7/C7

CFC (for the graphical description of sequential or asynchronous processes with status diagrams for SIMATIC S7/C7 The use of the Engineering Tools is especially beneficial for relatively large, complex applications. The CPU used in the S7-300 requires more Main memory in this case.

CPUs/Engineering Tools: All CPUs can be programmed in the basic languages STL, LAD and FBD. If the S7-SCL higher level language is to be used, we recommend using a CPU 314 or higher. If one of the graphical design languages (S7-GRAPH, S7-HiGraph or CFC) is used, we recommend using a CPU 315 or higher.

Communications

Totally Integrated Automation Totally Integrated Automation means you can use a single, completely integrated system for all your automation tasks! All the functions in a uniform environment. Shifting intelligence into I/O systemsdistributed intelligence - enables new designs in modular plant and machine construction with all the usual benefits, such as reusability of the software, faster start-up and increased availability. Communications networks are an important module within the system: Industrial Ethernet (IEEE 802-3 and 802.3u) the international standard for area and cell networking. PROFIBUS (IEC 61158/EN 50170) the international standard for cells and fields. AS-Interface (EN 50295) the international standard for communication with sensors and actuators. EIB (EN 50090, ANSI EIA 776) the global standard building installation system and basis for building automation. MPI Multi-Point-Interface for communication between CPUs, PG/PC and TD/OP. Point to point connection for communication between two nodes with special protocols. The point-topoint link represents the simplest form of communication. Various special protocols can be used (e.g. RK 512, 3964(R) and ASCII). Process or field communication Process or field communication serves to connect actors / sensors to a CPU. The connection can be via interfaces integrated on the CPU or via interface modules (IMs), function modules (FMs), communications modules (CPs). Process or field communication is supported by the AS-Interface and PROFIBUS-DP networks.

Data communication Data communication is used for data transfer between programmable controllers or between a programmable controller and intelligent devices (PCs, computers, etc.).

Data communication is handled via MPI, PROFIBUS or Industrial Ethernet.

CPUs - Characteristics

Integated interfaces Interfaces integrated directly into the CPUs enable the set-up of a high-performance communication environment using conventional bus technology. Multi-point interface MPI MPI is the affordable solution for communications with PG/PC, HMI systems and other SIMATIC S7/C7/WinAC automation systems. A maximum of 125 MPI nodes with 187.5 kbit/s can be connected: transfer of process data among various controllers, which means that, for example, a CPU can access the inputs/outputs of another controller Operator control and monitoring; HMI services are already integrated into the S7-300 operating system and transfer data to connected SIMATIC operator panels or operator stations without the need for any programming The MPI can also be used as a PROFIBUS-DP interface, which allows the use of two DP lines (for CPU 318-2DP only). PROFIBUS-DP The SIMATIC S7-300 can be connected to the open fieldbus PROFIBUS-DP (in accordance with EN 50170) to enable relatively large distributed structures to be set up on an economical basis. This opens up communication to a wide range of partners, from the SIMATIC controller to third-party field devices. Communication with existing SIMATIC S5 or SIMATIC 505 systems creates no problems. The distributed I/O modules are configured using STEP 7 in the same way as the centralized I/O modules, which saves engineering time and money. The S7-300 can therefore be used as a master or a slave.

Shared functions Operator control and monitoring functions and PG functions are possible through both interfaces (MPI, DP), e.g. programming using programming device/PC over relatively large distances. A programming device can also operate several CPUs or a number of programming devices can access a single CPU. There is also a routing function which enables a programming device connected to any point in the network to access all the nodes on this network. More complex functions can be implemented using communications modules. 2nd serial interface An additional serial port enables point to point (PtP) connection of all kinds of peripheral devices, e.g. scanners, weighing systems. This RS 422/485 interface enables a baud rate of up to 38.4 kbit/s and has ASCII, 3964(R) and RK 512 protocol drivers.

Integrated peripherals and technological functions Depending on their type, the CPUs incorporate digital or analog inputs and outputs and special inputs for counting and measurement with pulse generators or incremental transmitters. Some of the CPUs also have an integrated function for controlled positioning with special outputs. Memory functions The SIMATIC Memory Cards or Micro Memory Cards (MMC Flash EPROM) can be used to extend the load memory or as a simple way of installing a program update. In the modular CPUs, the data is buffered by means of a battery; in the new compact CPUs, the data is automatically buffered by the MMC, and no maintenance is required.

I/O modules - Special characteristics

Signal modules are the interface between the SIMATIC S7-300 and the process. A number of different digital and analog modules provide the exact inputs/outputs required for the function in question. Easy installation The sensors/actuators are connected using front connectors. If the module is replaced, the connector is simply plugged into the new module of the same type, the wiring remains unchanged. The mechanical coding of the front connector prevents confusion. SIMATIC TOPconnect simplifies the wiring process still further by providing pre-wired front connectors and terminal blocks. High packaging density The large number of channels on each module is one reason for the spacesaving design of the S7-300: Modules with 8 to 32 channels (digital) or 2 to 8 channels (analog) per module are available. Simple configuration The modules are configured and parameterized using STEP 7, there are no complicated switch settings. The data is stored centrally and, after a module is replaced, automatically transferred to the new module to avoid transfer errors. No software upgrades are required in order to use new modules. Any configurations which have been carried out once can be repeated identically any number of times, e.g. for series machines. Diagnostics, interrupts Many modules also monitor signal acquisition (diagnostics) and the signals from the process (process interrupts). This means the system can react quickly to any irregularities or process events. You can configure in STEP 7 whether the controller should react and what its reaction should be. Special modules The simulation module can be slotted into the S7-300 for testing and simulation purposes. This enables the simulation of encoder signals via switches and indicates output signals by means of LEDs. The module can be plugged in anywhere without worrying about slot rules.

The dummy module reserves a slot position for a signal module which is yet to be configured. When the module is slotted in at a later date, the mechanical configuration and the address allocation remain unchanged. The following pages detail criteria which can be used to select the appro-

priate signal module for a given application. Comprehensive technical information is always available in the latest version of the CA 01 catalog (Internet: www.siemens.de/automation/ca01).
