Submitted by: Lindsay McCann Grade Level: 2 Subject/Topic: Reading

Objectives:
TSW make inferences and draw conclusions before, during, and after reading a book.

Lesson Plan:
Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Motivation):
Say: What images come to your mind when I say the word bison? What do you know about them? (Explain that you will fill in a KWL chart, and fill in what they already know). Lets look at a picture of a bison together (show a printed picture of a bison). Is it big or small? What are some other characteristics that you think it has?

TEKS Achieved: 110.13. English Language Arts and Reading, Grade 2 (10) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Literary Nonfiction. Students understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the varied structural patterns and features of literary nonfiction and respond by providing evidence from text to support their understanding. Students are expected to distinguish between fiction and nonfiction.

Process:

Information Giving:

Say: What do you think you will learn about while reading this book? Lets look at the table of contents. What are some topics that we will read about? I want you to take a quick picture walk and find something that you would like to learn more about (fill in the W on the KWL chart about what the students want to learn)
Modeling:

Say: Read pages 2-5 and pay close attention to the characteristics of the bison and where they live (when finished talk about their findings). Now, read until page 11 and see what you can find out about how Native Americans may have used the bison. Have the students popcorn read the remainder of the book and discuss what happened to the bison.
Check for Understanding:

Blooms Taxonomy:
Knowledge/Remember Analysis Comprehension/Understand Application

Say: What do you think the authors purpose of this book was? What did you learn about bison? (Fill in the L on the KWL chart about what the students learned)
Guided Practice:

Differentiated Learning:
Auditory Visual/Spatial Verbal/Linguistic Intrapersonal Interpersonal

Say: Lets take a look at the information web. This will help you organize your thoughts either during or after reading a book. Lets think about all of the things that you learned while reading. (Help the students fill in a few boxes)
Independent Practice:

Students will complete the remaining boxes on the information web independently. Talk with the students about what they wrote in the other boxes.
Closure / Culminating Activity:

Classroom Strategies:
Cooperative Groups Hands-On Simulation Charts/Graphs/Maps Lecture

Have the students think about their favorite thing about the book. Explain that you want them to go home and tell their mom and/or their dad about their favorite part.

Accommodations:

Enrichment/Extension:
Curriculum Integration:
Reading Writing Have students write in their journal about their feelings on what happened to the bison.
