know? Who is your favorite sportsperson? Which
sport does he / she play? / Which team is he / she in?
Check understanding of these words: team, game,
fans, medal, international, league, train, warm up,
uniform, eld, coach.
Background
Soccer is often thought to be the most popular sport
in the world, with over 240 million players.
Soccer is called football in the U.K. It is the most
popular British sport, and many students play it at
school. Some of the most famous British football
clubs include Manchester United, Aston Villa, and
Liverpool, and the teams for these clubs often
include many international players.
In the U.S., basketball, baseball, American football
(called simply football in the U.S.), and ice hockey
are more popular sports. However, many people
enjoy playing soccer, and interest in the sport is
growing. The United States Womens soccer team
is one of the best in the world. More than 90,000
fans attended the 1999 FIFA Womens World Cup in
California.

Language check
Simple present
Some people watch soccer.
Boys and girls dont play on the same teams.
Adverbs of frequency
People sometimes go to football games.
Students usually play baseball or basketball.
Review the grammar points by asking the following
questions: Which sport does Marta play? Do boys
play on the Fair Lawn team? Remind students that
we use verb + s with the third person afrmative,
and that we use doesnt + verb in the negative form
(all persons). Ask students: How often do you watch
the school team play? Are they usually the winners?
Elicit answers with adverbs of frequency. Highlight
the fact that we put the adverb after the verb
be, but before other verbs. If necessary, write the
adverbs of frequency on the board, and ask students
to put them in order, from always to never (answers:
always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never).
6 Complete the sentences. Use the correct
afrmative or negative form of the simple
present.
Students read the sentences and complete them.

afrmative or the negative form of the simple

4 train 5 doesnt start 6 talks 7 watch

need to use information from the video to help
them to choose the correct adverb, and play the
video again if students need more help. Remind
them to look carefully at the verb and think
about whether the adverb needs to go before or
after it. Check answers with the class.
