Gazpron tried to get a majority stake in Russia's vast Sakhalin Island gas project. The Southeast Asian country Sakhalin Island belonged to Japan prior to its Russian confiscation.

The capital of The Republic of Cyprus is Nicosia and is the largest city. Nicosia is also the capital of The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (40% of the Island). The Republic of Cyprus President, Dimitris Christofias (AKEL, Communist party of Cyprus) served as the EU President in 2012. He served against the wishes of Turkey. In fact, Turkey refused to recognize his presidency unless a deal reunifying the island was reached. Turkey is the only country that recognizes The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. To the rest of the international community the northern part of the island is referred to as Turkish-occupied territory of The Republic of Cyprus.
