Magazine layout Terminology Explained.

Headline/Header. This creates Visual Hierarchy, It is the first thing you see when you start to read the magazine. Sub-Head. These are used to break up large chunks of text, a lead into what is to follow. Drop caps. Drop caps are used at the start of an article. These are larger letters and some times a different colour from body text. Body Text. This is the main text in a story, used to create flow and make articles readable. Layout rid. This is enables you to set your page into columns, and place pictures in the grid to make the layout isual better. !ull "uote. This is a section of the body text pulled out and made larger, maybe a different font style and colour from the body text. They in ite the reader into the story. utter. !utter"s or #lley Is the space between your column$s and can be set at any size that works well with the layout.

Bleed. This is when you place a photo or image o er the the crop marks so the photo or image goes right off the edge of the page. Sidebar. This will relate to the main body text and will usually be set on a coloured background. %ome instances they are set into a two column grid when body text is set in three column$s. Byline. This is the name of the person who has wrote the story, can be at the beginning or end of an article. #redit. #ll art work should be credited to the person who took took the photo or created the image. $rt. # photo, graphic or illustration, they are all called #rt to the magazine designer. #aption. This is text that relates to what is in the art. %olio. The magazines name, issue number & page number are all found in the 'olio. !aragrap& 'ndent. These show the start of a new paragraph. The first paragraph after a sub Head often wont ha e an Indent. Leading. The space between lines of text, greater leading can make a page open and in iting while leading is more newsy and serious.

These are usually in a larger point size and a different font style to body text. !oint Size. This is the size of your text and larger point size will create isual hierarchy, body text is usually set at )*pt but in news print or magazines you can get away with a point size of )+ or e en as low as ,. Seri*s/Sans Seri*s. Depending on what feel the article wants to portray, you can use either but in body text %erif font styles make the article more readable and create better flow. -%erif font styles ha e feet sans %erif ha e no feet.. Line Lengt&. This is the length of the line of text, if the line of text is to long the reader can easily get bored. /hile shorter line lengths keep the reader interested in the article. #olumn+s.
