Procedure Day 1: (50 minutes)

1. Start the lesson out with the Movie Ratings Activity. Ask the students to think about their favorite movie and write it down. Ask them to get specific about why they thought it was good. What did they look for? Have them discuss it with their neighbors. Have a couple students share. Explain to the students that we are always evaluating what we see and hear. Sometimes we forget to do this with online resources. 2. Ask the students to take out a piece of paper and come up with a list of factors that makes a website trustworthy. Give them about 5 minutes to do this. Have a couple students share with the class their answers and discuss their answers with them. a. Anyone can write things on the web. b. Although many things on the web may be interesting and correct, we cant always be sure everything is necessarily true. c. Not everyone is an expert on the subject they write. d. Since we dont always know who wrote the information or if they are qualified to write on the subject, we need to be alert and check the information before we can trust it. 3. Divide the students into 4 groups of 5 students in each group. Hand out the Digital Citizenship packet to each student. They will need this packet to navigate through all the centers. There will be 4 centers set up around the room. Assign each group to 1 center. The students will spend about 20 minutes in each center. For today, students will only get through 2 centers. They will finish tomorrow. 4. Once all the students have finished going through the centers, the teacher will assign each group to create a poster based on the center they are assigned. These posters will be hung up around the room as a reminder of what Good Digital Citizenship is. The poster is there to explain what each center teaches about digital citizenship. Center 1 This group will explore the Sophia platform designated for Digital Citizenship. They will watch a video about detecting lies on the internet. They will fill out the worksheet, While You Watch and write down the guidelines for evaluating and trusting online resources that are mentioned in the video. Students will also explore and evaluate, as a group, if the websites listed

are trustworthy or not. Using the WSQ on the Sophia platform, students will explain whether or not the websites listed are credible sources for information and why. http://www.sophia.org/tutorials/digital-citizenship-4

Center 2 In this center, students will be learning about website domains and copyrights. In their Digital Citizenship packet, there is a worksheet for this center to fill out for this center. Using the Source Comparison Tool worksheet, students will examine the contents of 3 websites. Since there is only 1 computer in the classroom, there are 5 handouts that are printouts of each websites main content. Students will evaluate the content on each handout as a group and fill out the worksheet. Center 3 In this center, students will be learning about The Rule of Three. They will be given the task of writing a scientific report about the subject, Could there be life on other planets? As part of their research, they will compare at least 3 websites. The handouts of printouts of the website are included in the Digital Citizenship packet. Center 4 In this center, students will be learning about cyberbullying. They will be given a worksheet on 2 case studies. The worksheet is in their packet. They will determine when teasing crosses the line into bullying. At the end of the lesson, students will be required to fill out a WSQ at home about their favorite lesson of the week and why and what they learned in each center.
