Optimizing Cloud Resources for Delivering IPTV Services through Virtualization.

Abstract
Virtualized cloud!based services can ta"e advantage of statistical multiple#ing across applications to $ield significant cost savings to the operator% &o'ever( achieving similar benefits 'ith real!time services can be a challenge% In this paper( 'e see" to lo'er a provider)s costs of real!time IPTV services through a virtualized IPTV architecture and through intelligent timeshifting of service deliver$% *e ta"e advantage of the differences in the deadlines associated 'ith +ive TV versus Video!on!Demand ,VoD- to effectivel$ multiple# these services% *e provide a generalized frame'or" for computing the amount of resources needed to support multiple services( 'ithout missing the deadline for an$ service% *e construct the problem as an optimization formulation that uses a generic cost function% *e consider multiple forms for the cost function ,e%g%( ma#imum( conve# and concave functions- to reflect the different pricing options% The solution to this formulation gives the number of servers needed at different time instants to support these services% *e implement a simple mechanism for time!shifting scheduled .obs in a simulator and stud$ the reduction in server load using real traces from an operational IPTV net'or"% Our results sho' that 'e are able to reduce the load b$ / 012 ,compared to a possible / 342-% *e also sho' that there are interesting open problems in designing mechanisms that allo' time!shifting of load in such environments% Modules: 4% AD5I6 0% 7S8R Modules Description ADMIN:

4.2. Performance Requirements

Performance is measured in terms of the output provided b$ the application% Re9uirement specifications pla$ an important part in the anal$sis of s$stem% Onl$ 'hen the re9uirement specifications are properl$ given( it is possible to design a s$stem( 'hich 'ill fit into re9uired environment % It rests largel$ 'ith the users of the e#isting s$stem to give the re9uirement specifications because the$ are the people 'ho finall$ use the s$stem% This is because the re9uirements have to be "no'n during the initial stages so that the s$stem can be designed according to those re9uirements% It is ver$ difficult to change the s$stem once it has been designed and on the other hand designed and on the other hand designing a s$stem( 'hich does not cater to the re9uirements of the user( is of no use% The re9uirement specification for an$ s$stem can be broadl$ stated as given belo' The s$stem should be accurate The s$stem should be better than the e#isting s$stem The e#isting s$stem is completel$ dependent on the user to perform all the duties%
