Resident of the Month - Lucille T.

Lucille Tischbirek was born and raised in Duelm, MN. She has spent 60 years of her life living nearby in Sauk Rapids, however! She grew up in a good Catholic family with five brothers and five sisters. She has one sister living over at St. Benedicts community here in St. Cloud, and two brothers who live down in the Twin Cities. She married George Tischbirek and had two sons. As if raising them wasnt enough, she was a waitress at a couple locations. She commented on her work as a waitres: I was pretty strong in my team! Lucille moved into Carefree this past year in midAugust. Since then, shes been eager to start a 500 card-playing group. Well officially start playing with Lucille and other 500 players every Thursday (starting 4/3) at 2:00 in the dining room. Congratulations, Lucille, for being our Resident of the Month for April!

day, lugging all those trays! Though she has lost both sons, she has three lovely grandkids and is looking forward to greatgrandkids someday. Lucille also used to participate in a bowling league with her sister and some friends. She said she wasnt a very good bowler, but we sure had fun on that

May 2012 Carefree Living started a Resident of the Month program. This program is in place to recognize our residents who put smiles on the faces of others and who help make Carefree Living a little brighter each day.

Spring Cleaning!
Spring is finally here! Its time to clean your room and get rid of anything you no longer wear or need. Anything you dont want or need will be donated to the Epilepsy Foundation in memory of Amanda Roos, a former resident and volunteer at Carefree Living. The Epilepsy Foundation is funded by donations and they get paid by the pound for clothing and small household items. Lets try to raise a ton (2,000 pounds) for the Epilepsy Foundation! Housekeeping will be happy to supply you with a bag for your donations and a donation box will be available in the lobby on 1st floor. Fire safety regulations require that all rooms are free from obstructions in the doorways and in front of the heaters. There must be an area large enough to use our lift in your room should you fall and need assistance getting up. Our safety committee will be inspecting your rooms and warning any residents that are not in compliance with the safety regulations.

History Corner with Ron

In colonial times the territory that became New York State was dominated by a powerful confederation of six Indian nations who called their combined territories Iroquoia. The leadership of this Iroquois League was in the hands of the Mohawk nation which, although the smallest in numbers, was recognized by the others as the eldest brother, first among equals. As Samuel de Champlain put it, The unwritten laws of Iroquoia gave them a special place of honor. They were also among the most successful fighters in North America, which helped not a little to preserve that place of honor for them. Another observer noted that As their Natural Genius inclines them to war, and they consider their happiness as depending on their Military skill, they use all Methods and all things to preserve that Spirit. Push the Fast Forward button and stop at 1886. In that year a steel bridge was being built across the St. Lawrence River, which forms part of the boundary between the state of New York and the province of Ontario, Canada. Somehow a group of Mohawks managed to get jobs working on the project, though the boss must have wondered how much use they were going to be. It didnt take him long to discover that they were very useful indeed. They were as agile as goats and had no fear of heights. That was the last that was heard about Mohawk steel workers for the time being. Then in 1900 construction began on the first steel-frame skyscraper in New York City, and suddenly there was a demand for steel workers. The Mohawks must have captured many of those jobs, because by 1931, when the construction of Rockefeller Center began, it was simply taken for granted that they would be called upon to put up the steel skeletons of its various buildings. They were paid $13.20 a day for eight hours of work, or $1.65 an hour. This may seem ridiculous for such dangerous work, but actually it was a princely wage. As late as 1948 the minimum wage was 40 an hour, and since the law creating the wage was passed only in 1938, ordinary workers on Rockefeller Center may have received as little as 20. A steel worker may therefore have received as much for one hour of work as an ordinary workman received for eight. The Mohawks were so well pleased that they decided to make steel working a tribal tradition by deliberately raising and training their sons to be steel workers. In doing this they abandoned the traditions of their ancestors of Iroquoiasomething most other tribes were unwilling to doand became the full-fledged American citizens it had always been possible for Native Americans to become.
