Observing competition night round Instructions 1. There are 2 questions, each worth 25 points. You have 80 minutes to solve them, of which : (a) 25 minutes for reading the question and preparing for the o servations, ( ) 30 minutes to perform all the o servations at the telescope (for oth questions), (c) 25 minutes for calculations and finishing !our wor". 2. #dditional time is allowed to move to and from the o serving site. $. #long with the questions !ou will receive a map of the s"!, for use with oth questions. %. #t the o serving site !ou will find read! : (a) a refracting telescope with a right&angle mirror and an e!epiece with an illuminated reticle, which can e rotated a out the optical a'is, ( ) a red torch, stopwatch, pencil, eraser and clip oard, (c) a chair. (ote: the telscope is alread! aligned ) do not change the position of the tripod* The rightness of the reticle can e ad+usted ! turning the on&off switch. 5. You are allowed to ta"e onl! the questions, answer sheet and lan" paper for additional wor" with !ou to the telescope. ,. -nl! the answer sheet will e assessed. The additional wor"sheets will not e assessed. .. /learl! mar" ever! page of the answer sheet with !our code num er. 0. 1f !ou have difficult! with the equipment (not related to the question) or distur the alignment of the telescope, call an assistant.

v2 Observing competition night round 1. The Little Dolphin #n asterism "nown as the 2ittle 3olphin lies near a line connecting the stars 4 5eg (6ar"a ) and 7 5eg (8cheat). 1t is mar"ed with a cicle on the large&scale map. The map also shows the constellation of 3elfinus, the 3olphin, with the rightest stars la elled with their 9a!er designations (4, 7, :, ; and <). The coordinates of 4 and 7 5eg and the 2ittle 3olphin (in right ascension order) are: =ight #scension 2ittle 3olphin 7 5eg 4 5eg 2$ h >2 m 2$ h >% m 2$ h >5 m 3eclination ?2$.> @ ?20.1 @ ?15.2 @

9ased on !our o servations, ma"e two drawings on the answer sheet : -n 3rawing 1 : 3raw the view of the constellation Delphinus (3el) as seen through the finder scope. 1nclude as man! stars as !ou can see in the field of view. Aith an arrow, mar" the apparent direction of motion of the stars across the field of view of the finder scope caused ! the rotation of the Barth. 2a el the stars with the 9a!er designations given on the map (4, 7, :, ; and <). #lso la el the rightest of these 5 stars Cmma'D. #lso la el the faintest of these 5 stars CmminD.

-n 3rawing 2 : 3raw the view of the Little Dolphin as seen through the larger telescope. 1nclude as man! stars as !ou can see in the field of view. Aith an arrow, mar" the apparent direction of motion of the stars across the field of view of the telescope caused ! the rotation of the Barth. 2a el the stars of the 2ittle 3olphin 4E, 7E, :E, ;E and <E such that the! match the la els of the stars in the constellation 3elphinus as given on the map. 2a el the rightest of these 5 stars Cmma'D.

v2 2. Determining declin tion The two pictures on the ne't page show a small asterism, as seen directl! on the s"! and as a mirror image. Three stars are la elled: 81, 82 and 8 x. The position of the asterism is also mar"ed with a rectangle on the larger&scale map of the s"!. Find this asterism and point !our telescope to it. Gsing the illuminated reticle as a fi'ed reference point, and the stopwatch, measure the time ta"en for the stars 81, 82 and Sx to move across the field. You ma! rotate the e!epiece so that the cross&hairs of the reticle are in the most convenient position for !our measurement. Gse !our measurements and the "nown declinations of stars 81 and 82 as given elow to determine the declination of star Sx. -n the answer sheet, give !our measurements and wor"ing, and estimate the random error in !our result. For each set of measurements !ou ma"e, draw the view through the e!epiece on the answer sheet. (Gse the lan" circular field on the answer sheet.) 6ar" the drawing with the compass directions ( and B. 3raw the reticle and the trac"s of the stars to show the motion which !ou timed using the stopwatch. 6ar" the ends of each timed trac" and show which time measurement refers to which trac" ) for e'ample, for measurement CT1D mar"ing the ends C8tart T1D and CBnd T1D. The angle of the reticle can e easil! ad+usted ! rotating the e!epiece around its optical a'is. 1f !ou change the angle of the reticle for a new measurement, draw a new diagram.

The declinations of the field stars 81 and 82 are : 81 :

= ?1H @ %0E 10I

82 :

= ?2> @ >,E 1>I

#ssume that: (82) J (8x) J (81).
