INDIAN INSURANCE: MODERN MARKETING APPROACH The Insurance sector plays a vital role in the economic development of our nation. It acts as a mobiliser of savings, financial intermediary, promoter of investment activities, stabiliser of financial markets and a risk manager. India is still an under-insured country in the world. It is at the 18th position among Life Insurance markets and 8th in !on-Life Insurance markets in the world. This indicates that there is a huge potential, yet to be e"plored. HISTORY OF INSURANCE IN INDIA The business of life insurance in India in its e"isting form started in India in the year 1818 with the establishment of the #riental Life Insurance $ompany in %olkatta. Some of the important milestones in the Life Insurance Business in India are: 1&1 ' The Indian (ssurance $ompanies (ct enacted as the first statue to regulate the Life Insurance business. 1& 8 ' The Indian $ompanies (ct enacted to enable the government to collect statistical information about Life Insurance. 1&)8 ' *arlier legislation consolidated and amended to by the Insurance (ct with the ob+ect of protecting the interest of the insuring public. 1&,-' ., Indian and /oreign Insurers and provident societies taken over by the $entral 0overnment and !ationalised. The 0eneral Insurance 4usiness in India, on the other hand, can trace its roots to the Triton Insurance $ompany Ltd., the first 0eneral Insurance $ompany established in the year 18,5 in

%olkatta by the 4ritish. Some of the important milestones in the General Insurance Business in India are: 1&56 ' The Indian 7ercantile Insurance Ltd., set up, the first company to transact all classes of general insurance business. 1&,6 ' 0eneral Insurance $ouncil, a wing of the Insurance (ssociation of India, frames a code of conduct for ensuring fair conduct and sound business practices. 1&-8 ' The Insurance (ct amended to regulate investments and set minimum solvency margins and the Tariff (dvisory $ommittee set up. 1&6 ' The 0eneral Insurance 4usiness 8!ationlisation9 (ct, 1&6 nationlaised the general insurance business in India with effect from 1st :anuary 1&6). 156 insurers amalgamated and grouped into four companies vi2. the !ational Insurance $ompany Ltd., the !ew India (ssurance $ompany Ltd., the #riental Insurance $ompany Ltd., and the ;nited India Insurance $ompany Ltd. 0I$ incorporated as a company. The funds generated by LI$ and 1ublic <ector 0eneral insurers are invested in the avenues that benefit the society.
