LESSON: -Create a Spreadsheet Lesson for The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Make an Excel Spread Sheet with characters from Twains Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The spreadsheet will include the characters from the novel, background information on each character and personality characteristics of each character. Teacher: Holly Morse Topic: English Grade: 7th Lesson Plan Length of Lesson: 45 minutes

PROBLEM STATEMENT: Imagine you are the author of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. You will need to brainstorm and develop
characters for your book. Each of the characters are complex individuals. In order to develop the characters thoroughly, you will need to develop background information, characteristics and personalities for each of your characters. To demonstrate this, please make a spreadsheet detailing each character, their background and characteristics. For example: Huck Finn, 13 years old, raised by his father, mischievous.

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVES/BIG IDEA: The main objective of this lesson is for the student to be able to identify main characters of
Mark Twains Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, describe the characters backgrounds, and describe the characters characteristics. The students
have read Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in class, so they should be familiar with the characters. This lesson analyzes how an author develops and builds characters in the work. Tenn. Common Core standards CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.7.6 English Composition & Knowledge 3013- Tenn.
Education Standards. It also analyzes how students make inferences and draw conclusions on the text. SP1080.1.5.9 It also analyzes how the author uses time and its impact on the plot, character and theme of the text. CU080.1.9

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Describe the background information on each character. (age, race, education, family, etc.) Describe the characteristics of each character. (Blooms Taxonomy Analyzing). 3. Given a computer and Excel, create an Excel spread sheet. Then, insert the name of the character, the background information and the characteristics of each character. (Blooms Taxonomy Applying). Student Participation

The goal of this lesson is for the student to demonstrate a clear understanding of main two characters from Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The students will use clip art to insert an image that in their opinion best describes the characters that they picked. They will then describe to me why they chose that image.

Technology Integration
Students will use Excel to form an Excel spread sheet. They will then insert information regarding background and characteristics that best describe their characters.

BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE


Student will demonstrate knowledge of the previous assigned reading material, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The lesson is a continuation of Tenn. Common Core standards CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.7.6 which analyzes how an author develops different characters in a text. The lesson is a continuation of Tenn. Common Core standards SP1080TLA-Literacy 5.9 which analyzes how students make inferences and draw their own conclusions in a text. Refer to the Spreadsheet Lesson as we continue to explore Mark Twains Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and its effects on literature. Be aware the lesson will be differenced for students that did not master the objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE


Introduction Begin by asking students to name some of the main characters of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn As the students name the characters, write them down on the board Ask the students to give brief descriptions of each character aloud Ask the students to give brief background descriptions of each character aloud Explain to the students that they will be responsible for picking the main characters of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and using Excel to create a spread sheet. Explain to the students the spread sheet will need to include; the character name, the background description of that character, the characteristics of that character Pass out a sheet youve created that states the assignment to each student

Prior to Computer Time (15 minutes) Teacher Procedures- The teacher will ask the students to name main characters from Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. She will then write these characters on the board. The teacher will ask the students to describe the background of each character. The teacher will also ask students to describe some of the characteristics of the characters aloud. Student Procedures- The students will name main characters from Adventures of Huckleberry Finn for the teacher to write on the board. The students will also describe aloud the background information and characteristics of the characters they have named. Making the Word Processing Project on the Computer (30 minutes) Teacher Procedures- The teacher will pass out an instruction sheet that has the assignment written down to each student. She will then show the students an example of an Excel Spread Sheet, explaining that students will create their own Excel Spread Sheet with characteristics and background information on each character. Student Procedures- The students will pick the main characters from Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. They will then use Excel to create their spread sheets. They will insert the characters name, background information and characteristics in the spread sheet.

Closure- Student volunteer to share their spread sheet with the class. The teacher polls the class for questions, then collects the assignments.

Main characters need to be chosen from Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Background information was given for each character. Characteristics were given for each character

BEGINNING (1-5 points)


Characters chosen were not main characters. Background information was not given for all of the characters. The student did not give adequate characteristics for each character.

ACCOMPLISHED(5-10 points)
Characters chosen were main characters from Adventures of Huckleberry Finn The background information adequately related to every character The student gave adequate characteristics for each character.

MODIFICATIONS
I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not a part of this particular lesson.
