ORMOC CITY
Once the playground of the rich and famous during the Marcos years, the Olot property in Tolosa, Leyte, already in decrepit state after years of neglect by the caretaker Philippine Commission on Good Government (PCGG), was given the final blow by Yolanda. Young journalists from national outlets who visited the property this week do not even know that once upon a time, it hosted a provincial leg of the Ms Universe contest in 1974, producing Spains first and only Ms Universe (left) Amparo Muoz. BIDALYMPICS champ is Tongonan Fire Brigade
THE TONGONAN Volunteer Fire Brigade of Brgy. Tongonan, this city, was declared champion of the newly concluded BIDALYMPICS or Barangay Integrated Defense Action Olympics that was held in Tacloban City last March 26. The contest is part of the Fire Prevention Month activity, it was learned from SF03 Virgilio Betancol, who was in Tacloban to lend support to the Tongonan Fire Brigade together with Ormoc Fire Marshall Charlie Gerzon. He happily reported that in one day, the Tongonan Volunteer Fire Brigade were able to show their expertise and readiness to combat fire situations and bested the Tacloban Chinese Fire Brigade which was declared second placer. Isagani Baez, barangay chairman of Tongonan, said he was very happy with the performance of their fire brigade. He also thanked the Energy Development Corporation and the Ormoc Bureau of Fire Protection for training them well. The Tongonan Fire Brigade is composed of barangay tanods, Baez said. They are tanods when there is no fire and change hats to become firefighters when there is need to. Meanwhile, it was also learned from SFO3 Roberto Ygoa, operation chief of the Ormoc BFP, that they received 6 fire alarms during the period March 1 26. Five were grassfires and one was for electrical wires that caught fire. By Paul Libres

PO3 Ruel Yanuario, investigator, said he found out that Garridos car was owned by a Mabaning Limbona, also a resident of Brgy. Tambulilid. Limbona is said to be related to one Simbad Limbona who was raided before for drugrelated charges. The same car
was previously owned by a Renato Mekitpekit, reportedly a cop at the Ormoc City Police Office here, who bought it from Bryan Anthony Zaldivar of Albuera, Leyte. The victim would later name a Rey Mekitpekit as one of the suspects in blotter entry 1523. On the other hand, the identities of the motorcycleriding suspects are now also known to the police. They are Elmer Sultan alias Moklo and Ariel Empasis alias Onyol,

the library to the second floor. In the past, the Ormoc Festival and Cultural Foundation has proposed that the city hall be converted into a museum cum library. The old city hall is an excellent example of the architecture during the times it was constructed. A similar, if bigger building, is the Asian Museum in Singapore. It is obviously sturdy, withstanding the wrath of Yolanda, with only its glass windows broken and blown off.
Councilor Vincent Rama, on the other hand, is proposing that the Police Station 1 occupy the whole building it is occupying as the DILG and City ENRO, which previously occupied the second floor, have transferred. Citing the citys growing needs, he said the police would be more comfortable with bigger space and could contribute to their efficiency. He said they will present the proposal to the executive. both former barangay tanods of Tambulilid. Yanuario, however, said the two have already fled and are nowhere to be found. The victim has also manifested to the police that he was not interested to file charges against the suspects. Meanwhile, the victim in the Albuera incident is Arturo Pulangcos, 53, a businessman who reportedly rents out his land near the public market to vendors. He is also reportedly an intelligence asset of the regional PNP. Sr. Insp. Edwin Oloan, Albuera chief of police, said the incident happened at broad daylight. Pulangcos was drinking with seven others in a despidida party for their friend Ponciano Bioc. They were drinking at Biocs compound at San Andres Street of the town proper when the crime happened. Witnesses said that at around 9:00 AM, two men riding a red XRM motorcycle suddenly stopped by Biocs compound and went inside. They immediately started shooting Pulangcos. Pulangcoss drinking buddies told police they could not give a good description of the killers because they were busy docking for cover when the shooting started. The driver reportedly had on a helmet but his companion did not. Nonetheless, nobody could give still give a good description, said police chief Oloan. The police recovered several empty shells and slugs from the crime scene. Unlike the victim in the Ormoc ambush, Pulangcos did not survive the shooting. By Paul Libres with LMJ

CFC, Ormoc LGU breaks ground for the Our Lady of Fatima Fran Farm CFC ANCOP Community
BY JHAY GASPAR
THE COUPLES for Christ and LGU-Ormoc broke ground for the Our Lady of Fatima Fran Farm CFC ANCOP Community in Purok 5, Sitio Fran Farm, Brgy. Matica-a on March 26, 2014. The groundbreaking ceremony was set by the CFC Answers for the Cry of the Poor (ANCOP) Tekton Inc. with project partner Chalice Foundation based in Canada. Present during the ceremony were LGU Representatives Ormoc City Mayor Edward Codilla, City Councilor Tommy Serafica and the Fran family, the donor of 2-hectare site for the project. These 2 hectares will be used to build over 100 homes in the community. These homes will be given to more than 100 families as part of the package that includes an educational component. The children of these families will also be sent to school under the Education component of Building the Church of the Poor (BCOP), said BCOP Head Jojo Sumalinog. He added that shelter is just a secondary priority because CFC focuses mainly on transformation of families. They call the recipients home partners instead of beneficiaries. To maximize the fund granted by the Couples for Christ of USA, UAE, Middle East, Europe, Canada and other countries with CFC communities, the CFC did not outsource contractors. The homes will be built by CFC community engineering and contractors together with the homeowners-to-be.
Ceremonial turnover of fishing repair kits. Dr. Andreas Lange of the GIZ (extreme right) turns over repair kits to (L-R) Tanauan Mayor Pel Tecson, Leyte governor Mic Petilla, Javier Mayor Sandy Javier and Palo Mayor Remedios Petilla. TACLOBAN CITY The mayors of Palo and Javier said that if there was one pressing need in the rebuilding of shelters for their constituents, it was the need for donors who are willing to buy lands or donate their properties for human resettlement projects. Palo Mayor Remedios Petilla, a former Leyte governor, and Javier Mayor Leonardo Sandy Javier Jr. of the Andoks Pambansang Manok chain said that there were many housing donors but there was no land to build the houses on. LGUs cannot afford to buy land, Javier said, adding it was the same problem all over, adding he was speaking in behalf of the mayors as the president of the League of Mayors of the Philippines Leyte chapter. He is also the national LMP president. Its a difficult task, he said, because donors come to his town and tell him their intention to donate houses. There was one who came who was willing to donate 400 houses but there was no land to put them in. In the end, he said, he had to give them the land he donated to the LGU in the past because he was afraid they would take the 400 houses elsewhere. Mayor Petilla, on the other hand, said that at most, she can come up with three to five hectares but it was not enough to resettle all the people who needed homes. If there was land to be had, it was for sale and at steep prices at that. We need more, she said, appealing to the foreign humanitarian agencies present. The two mayors bared this during a Donors Forum for Yolanda-affected areas in Leyte and Samar that is currently ongoing at the Leyte Park Hotel, from March 25 to 27, 2014. However, in an interview, she said Palo already has three sites which could accommodate at least 1,000 homes. Mayors and their representatives of at least 30 towns in Leyte and Samar attended the opening day, which was also attended by the United National Development Program (UNDP) and UN-Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (UN-OCHA), aside from other humanitarian organizations which are helping out in the relief and rehabilitation efforts. The Donors Forum was organized by the GIZ. The Office of the Presidential Assistant on Rehabilitation and Recovery (OPARR), however, was not represented so questions on the progress of the governments relief and rehab efforts were not addressed. Javier, who described the lack of land as terrible, appealed to the donors present to donate lands. There is no lack of housing donors. There is a lack of land donations, he said. The two mayors said that if they had enough land to develop into a large community, the delivery of livelihood assistance would be easy. Petilla said that a proposed resettlement in Brgy. Barayong, if realized, would include a livelihood component. It was important to bring the livelihood to them so that they will not leave their homes and get tempted to resettle in the danger zones, Petilla explained. For his part, Mayor Javier said that he already started a new livelihood venture for his town. After asking the people to replant immediately their rice lands after Yolanda which are now ready for harvest by April, he also started hollowblock making to give constituents employment. We now have 30 hollow block making machines which produces 30,000 hollow blocks a day, he announced, telling mayors they can get their requirements from his town. Mayor Javier also went home happy that day, getting a pledge of 2,500 armchairs for his town. He quipped that there were also many humanitarian groups that helped repair the damaged schools in his town but forgot the students also needed chairs. Now, the children are back in school but they have no chairs. By Lalaine M. Jimenea

Ricky Cuenca, CFC Provincial Director Jude Abenoja, Mrs. Fn and Louis Fran Sr., Mayor Edward Codilla and Ambros of Chalice Foundation. The construction will start as soon as the site development plan will be approved. After the houses are built, home partners will sign a contract that restricts them from selling or transferring ownership of the house. And once the Our Lady of Fatima Fran Farm CFC ANCOP Community is established, CFC will then provide a series of values formation, livelihood, and health and nutrition services for them. Likewise, they will also provide spiritual formation; Bagong bahay, bagong buhay as the CFC would say. The recipients of the house were selected through their poorest of the poor qualifications which include income level that must not exceed 10K per month, those families with breadwinners in prison,

It was also learned that on the following day, the CFC Area Governance team in charge for shelter-building was meeting Leyte Gov. Dominic Petilla to discuss the same matter. They want to know if the LGU can spare a site for same project for Palo, Tolosa, Tacloban, Tanauan and Dulag.

Sense of sin
IT IS inherent in our rational nature that we develop an idea of what is right and wrong. As soon as we are old enough to use our reason, aside from perceiving and knowing things, we start to distinguish what is good and evil. Obviously, our capacity to distinguish good from bad starts in a primitive stage, kind of shallow and very limited in scope, based solely what we see and feel, and not much more. But with time, experience and education, this capacity grows and hopefully matures. It is for this reason that we all have the need to base ourselves on the very foundation of reality, the very source of what is moral and immoral. This is none other than God, the author and creator of the universe. Grounding our capacity to distinguish between right and wrong on another basis would set us on the offside. Sadly, this is what is happening these days. There seems to be a systematic distancing from God and a growing dependence on our own ideas, ideologies, philosophies, and other methods that practically ignore or are even hostile to God. We need to remind ourselves strongly these days that we need God for us to know and judge properly. We just cannot depend entirely on our legal and technological systems, for example, no matter how sophisticated they have been developed. For this to happen, we need faith to give substance and direction to our reason. Reason cannot stand on its own. It is incomplete without faith. In practical terms, this means we need to overcome our tendency to make ourselves the standard, the ultimate lawgiver. It is God who is all of these, and we need to enter into an intimate relation with him to know and judge things properly. Thus, we need to pray, to talk to him and get to know and love him more and more. We need to study his teaching, now the doctrine of the Church. We need to develop virtues, have recourse to the sacraments. Only then can we be intimate with God, and live and work always with him. One big problem that the world today faces is the loss of the sense of sin. Many people do not anymore know what sin really is. Many think sin is only a matter of what is legally prohibited, socially tabooed, politically incorrect, or what is unpopular, what turns out to be a failure in some sense, etc. This loss of the sense of sin, greatly lamented by many saints and popes, is mainly due to our drifting away from God. Thus, we are now even legalizing what are actually outright sins like abortion, contraception, many forms of sensuality and corruption, etc. These developments reflect what St. Paul once said: For manyare enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things. (Phil 3,17) To have the proper sense of sin, we need to meditate on the passion, death and resurrection of Christ. There we can see both the ugliness of sin as well as the unending mercy of God, since as St. Paul also said, where sin has abounded, grace has abounded even more. (Rom 5,20) Yes, its our faith more than our reason alone

Collision Course?
COMMENTARIES THIS weekend will include the first-ever meeting between US President Barrack Obama and Pope Francis. This came against the backdrop of the Ukrainian crisis and the G8, now whittled down to a G7 meeting --- after Russia was shown the door. This years summit wont be in Russia but in Belgium. The G8 is an informal club, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov shrugged. No one hands out membership cards. And no one can be kicked out of it. There is, meanwhile, no sight of an early end to this standoff. Obama in 2009 called on Pope Benedict XVI, now retired. The last time a pontiff quit was in 1415 when Pope Gregory stepped down to avoid schism. At the Thursday meeting, both knew that even their postures signal worldwide audiences. So do their differences. Obama is locked into the legacy phase of his presidency. In contrast, Francis just marked his first anniversary on the chair of Peter. Pending in the pontiffs in-tray is an invitation, from the US Congress, to address a joint session. A Catholic and a Protestant, who disagree over flashpoints such as abortion... might seem like an odd couple, John Gehring wrote in USA Today. But Obama will find a warmer reception from Francis than he does from a minority of U.S. culture-warrior bishops and conservative political leaders who sometimes act as if God is a Republican. The pontiff shares common ground with a president who wants to raise the minimum wage, pass immigration reform and calls inequality the defining challenge of our time.....This pope is not a maverick. Pope Leo XIII recognized the right of workers to earn enough to provide for a family since 1891 .Todays federal minimum wage fails that basic moral test. . Obama seeks to reform an outdated U.S. immigration system. That resonates in Francis denunciation globalization of indifference at Lampedusa. An estimated 20,000 African migrants died attempting to cross the Mediterranean and reach the Italian island Vatican earlier praised Obamas efforts on nuclear deterrence and disarmament. There are differences of opinion over Syria. Obama wants President Bashar al-Assad to go. The Vatican is concerned over Syrias Christian minority, which fears that whatever follows Assad would be worse. Medias relentless deadlines can blur how, Francis took another unexpected decision, a week earlier on simmering issues of clerical sexual abuse and greater role for women in the church. He named initial members for a new commission to tackle these issues. The group includes an equal number of women and men, more laypeople than clergy plus an Irish activist Marie Collins who was abused as a 13 year old by a hospital chaplain, New York Times noted. Yet, again Francis had deliberately shaken up the usual way of doing things at the Vatican. The pope left the door ajar for future Asian and African members where the church is growing most rapidly and the issue of child sexual abuse is still taboo. Both the scope of its work and future members will be set by the commission itself, said Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi. Of the five lay people Francis picked, four are women. The result is that fully half the commissions members are female. Aside from Collins, these include: (1) Hanna Suchocka, who served as Polands Prime Minister between 1992 and 1993, and who served five different Polish governments as the countrys ambassador to the Vatican; (2) Catherine Bonnet, a well-regarded child psychologist from France who has written extensively on the trauma inflicted on children by sexual abuse and exploitation; and (3) Baroness Sheila Hollins, president of the British Medical Association and a widely consulted expert on child development issues. Clearly, these women arent windowdressing, the Boston Globe adds. Theyre accomplished experts, with deep experience of getting things done both in secular circles and in the church. Francis cant be blind to the fact that this also amounts to a down payment on his pledge to boost womens roles. Also named was cardinal Sean OMalley, one of eight Franciss key advisers and the archbishop of Boston, where the US scandal erupted in 2002. The other is Humberto Miguel Yez, who heads the moral theology faculty at Romes Jesuit-run Gregorian University . Add to that one of Franciss personal secretaries: Msgr. Alfred Xuereb of Malta. These

THE VIEW FROM ORMOC ... from P. 4
you work. as i have said, you are not in the worst place at this stage in your career. sometimes, having too many choices is not that healthy. i think sticking on to your job for a significant amount of time is a good idea. it will test your ability to cope with something you are not too happy doing. the sad reality is that we have to bear it because it is part of the learning process. If i encourage you to quit early, the next time you feel the same discomfort, you will not learn to cope but quit again. I know of quite a number of people who were as good as you or who were even better than you, but did not achieve their full potential because they always wanted to be happy with what they were doing. we need not go very far. Person A and Person B had to struggle with Company X because they did not have much choice. It is only now that they can do as they please because they have established themselves already. I do not think you should lose sight of what you want to do. If you do decide to quit, be responsible enough to find another job before quitting. It will not look good if you quit without any definite job waiting. i do not suggest that you immediately take the NGO

Tony Meloto worked in the private sector for a long time. Manny Pangilinan, etc. i will always support you in any way you want me to. while the job might not be for you, you might have to grin and bear it while you are looking for a new one (whether corporate or NGO). i have taken less fulfilling jobs in my career but i have looked at them as the dots that connected me to where i am now. the more you despair, the more you will be unhappy. many people would love to take your place, given the opportunity. just look at this stage as the difficult stepping stones in testing your character and patience. probably, later on, with the benefit of hindsight, you will conclude that it was all for the better that you were not too hasty in making the decisions on this matter. having said what i think, do not be afraid to make the decisions you think that best suit you. lagi lang naman kaming nandito. but as they say, do not make decisions when you are unhappy (or emotional). they tend to be the less logical ones. labs always, pops

THE PHILIPPINE Army recently marked its 117th Founding Anniversary. Here in Ormoc City, the 19th Infantry Battalion based in Aguiting, Kananga, Leyte led the commemoration of their anniversary with a Static Display at the city plaza here, featuring their tanks,
battle gears and armaments. People flocked to the display, especially families with small kids curious to touch the guns and take a ride in the fatigue-painted tanks. It was also a good opportunity for ordinary folks that the Philippine Army are approachable and friendly, too,
and except for their uniforms, were just flesh and blood just like anybody. Aside from the static display, the Army also held various civic-military operations activities like house to house visitations, radio plugging, dialogs with the civilians, bloodletting and even sympo-
sium for people to be aware of their purpose of Serving the People, Securing the Land. By LMJ

Lent is a special time of prayer, penance, sacrifice and good works in preparation of the celebration of Easter. In the desire to renew the liturgical practices of the Church, The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of Vatican Council II stated, The two elements which are especially characteristic of Lent -- the recalling of baptism or the preparation for it, and penance -- should be given greater emphasis in the liturgy and in liturgical catechesis. It is by means of them that the Church prepares the faithful for the celebration of Easter, while they hear Gods word more frequently and devote more time to prayer (no. 109). The word Lent itself is derived from the AngloSaxon words lencten, meaning Spring, and lenctentid, which literally means not only Springtide but also was the word for March, the month in which the majority of Lent falls. Since the earliest times of the Church, there is evidence of some kind of Lenten preparation for Easter. For instance, St. Irenaeus (d. 203) wrote to Pope St. Victor I, commenting on the celebration of Easter and the differences between practices in the East and the West: The dispute is not only about the day, but also about the actual character of the fast. Some think that they ought to fast for one day, some for two, others for still more; some make their day last 40 hours on end. Such variation in the observance did not originate in our own day, but very much earlier, in the time of our forefathers (Eusebius, History of the Church, V, 24). When Rufinus translated this passage from Greek into Latin, the punctuation made between 40 and hours made the meaning to appear to be 40 days, twenty-four hours a day. The importance of the passage, nevertheless, remains that since the time of our forefathers -- always an expression for the apostles -- a 40-day period of Lenten preparation existed. However, the actual practices and duration of Lent were still not homogenous throughout the Church. Lent becomes more regularized after the legalization of Christianity in A.D. 313. The Council of Nicea (325), in its disciplinary canons, noted that two provincial synods should be held each year, one before the 40 days of Lent. St. Athanasius (d. 373) in this Festal Letters implored his congregation to make a 40-day fast prior to the more intense fasting of Holy Week. St. Cyril of Jerusalem (d. 386) in his Catechectical Lectures, which are the paradigm for our current RCIA programs, had 18 pre-baptismal instructions given to the catechumens
during Lent. St. Cyril of Alexandria (d. 444) in his series of Festal Letters also noted the practices and duration of Lent, emphasizing the 40-day period of fasting. Finally, Pope St. Leo (d. 461) preached that the faithful must fulfill with their fasts the Apostolic institution of the 40 days, again noting the apostolic origins of Lent. One can safely conclude that by the end of the fourth century, the 40-day period of Easter preparation known as Lent existed, and that prayer and fasting constituted its primary spiritual exercises. Of course, the number 40 has always had special spiritual significance regarding preparation. On Mount Sinai, preparing to receive the Ten Commandments,
Nevertheless, I was always taught, If you gave something up for the Lord, tough it out. Dont act like a Pharisee looking for a loophole. Second, the general rule was for a person to have one meal a day, in the evening or at 3 p.m. These Lenten fasting rules also evolved. Eventually, a smaller repast was allowed during the day to keep up ones strength from manual labor. Eating fish was allowed, and later eating meat was also allowed through the week except on Ash Wednesday and Friday. Dispensations were given for eating dairy products if a pious work was performed, and eventually this rule was relaxed totally. (However, the abstinence from even dairy products led to the practice of blessing Easter eggs and eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday.) Over the years, modifications have been made to the Lenten observances, making our practices not only simple but also easy. Ash Wednesday still marks the beginning of Lent, which lasts for 40 days, not including Sundays. The present fasting and abstinence laws are very simple: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, the faithful fast (having only one full meal a day and smaller snacks to keep up ones strength) and abstain from meat; on the other Fridays of Lent, the faithful abstain from meat. People are still encouraged to give up something for Lent as a sacrifice. (An interesting note is that technically on Sundays and solemnities like St. Josephs Day (March 19) and the Annunciation (March 25), one is exempt and can partake of whatever has been offered up for Lent. Nevertheless, I was always taught, If you gave something up for the Lord, tough it out. Dont act like a Pharisee looking for a loophole. Moreover, an emphasis must be placed on performing spiritual works, like attending the Stations of the Cross, attending Mass, making a weekly holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament, taking time for personal prayer and spiritual reading and most especially making a good confession and receiving sacramental absolution. Although the practices may have evolved over the centuries, the focus remains the same: to repent of sin, to renew our faith and to prepare to celebrate joyfully the mysteries of our salvation. FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS What are the origins of Lent? Did the Church always have this time before Easter?
Moses stayed there with the Lord for 40 days and 40 nights, without eating any food or drinking any water (Ex 34:28). Elijah walked 40 days and 40 nights to the mountain of the Lord, Mount Horeb (another name for Sinai) (I Kgs 19:8). Most importantly, Jesus fasted and prayed for 40 days and 40 nights in the desert before He began His public ministry (Mt 4:2). Once the 40 days of Lent were established, the next development concerned how much fasting was to be done. In Jerusalem, for instance, people fasted for 40 days, Monday through Friday, but not on Saturday or Sunday, thereby making Lent last for eight weeks. In Rome and in the West, people fasted for six weeks, Monday through Saturday, thereby making Lent last for six weeks. Eventually, the practice prevailed of fasting for six days a week over the course of six weeks, and Ash Wednesday was instituted to bring the number of fast days before Easter to 40. The rules of fasting varied. First, some areas of the Church abstained from all forms of meat and animal products, while others made exceptions for food like fish. For example, Pope St. Gregory (d. 604), writing to St. Augustine of Canterbury, issued the following rule: We abstain from flesh, meat, and from all things that come from flesh, as milk, cheese and eggs.

Plaintiff is of legal age, married and a resident of Brgy. San Roque, Don Antonio Heights, Antipolo City, Philippines and for the purpose of this case plaintiff is represented by his brother Bonaven S. Amo by virtue of a Special Power of Attorney executed on February 18, 2012, while defendants are likewise all of legal age, and residents of Brgy. Punta, Ormoc City, Philippines, where they may served with summons and other court processes. Copy of the Special Power of Attorney attached hereto as ANNEX A; 2. Both parties have the capacity to sue and be sued; 3. Plaintiff is one of the children and heirs of the late spouses Basilio Amo and Estrella Salazar evidenced by her certificate of live birth hereto attached as ANNEX B; 4. During the lifetime of spouses Basilio Amo and Estrella Salazar, they owned a certain parcel of land particularly described as follows: A parcel of land (Lot 1 of the consolidation and subdivision plan, Pcs-08-000349 being a portion of the consolidation of Lot 153 and Lot 154 of the Cadastral Survey of Ormoc, L.R.C. Cad. Rec. No. 1456), situated in the Poblacion, city of Ormoc, Island of Leyte, containing an area of ONE HUNDRED TWENTY ONE (121) SQUARE METERS, covered by Transfer Certificate of Title No. 24626. Copy of the Transfer Certificate of Title No. 24626 hereto attached as ANNEX C; 5. Sometime in February 2012, plaintiff and her brother Bonaven Amo received a letter from defendants through their counsel Atty. Aleah Rafel Bataan- Tolibao informing the former that 9/11th portion of the above-described lot was sold to the defendants by the plaintiffs siblings and nephews and nieces. (who are representative of the deceased Elisa Polangcus) namely:- Elvira Amo, Benedicto Amo, Benjamin Amo, Elerita Amo, Basilio Amo Jr., Bernardo Amo, Editha Amo, Beethoven Amo, Marisol Polangcus, Joseph Polangcus, Jericho Polangcus, Caryl Ann Polangcus and Maria Theresa Polangcus. Copy of the letter hereto attached as ANNEX D; 6. Plaintiff obtained a certified true copy of the Transfer Certificate of Title No. 24626 from the Office of the Registry of Deeds of Ormoc City and she confirmed an affidavit of adverse claim entered at the back thereof executed by the defendants stating that they have purchased some portions of the subject property. Plaintiff also exerted effort to obtain a copy of the Deed of Absolute Sale executed by her co-heirs but she was only able to secure the one executed by Editha Amo. Copy of the Deed of Sale executed by Editha Amo hereto attached as ANNEX E while Entry No. 2298 at the back of TCT No. 24626 is marked as ANNEX C-1; 7. In the same letter, defendants also demanded partition of the subject property. In a letter-reply dated February 17, 2012 sent by the plaintiff through counsel, plaintiff express her desire to redeem the 9/11th share sold by her siblings to the defendants but as of the filing of this case, there is no response coming from the defendants. On March 20, 2012, another letter was also sent to the defendants again informing them of the proposed redemption price but plaintiff received no response too. Did you know that the global fight against Polio was started in the Philippines?
YESSIR, THE global fight against the debilitating polio started in the country in 1979. It was started by the Rotary Club International. Sergio Mulitsch di Palmenberg, an outstanding and forward-looking Rotarian, inspired the campaign and promoted what was dubbed as the PolioPlus massive vaccination activity. Mulitsch facilitated the shipment of the first 500,000 doses of anti-polio vaccine to the Philippines in 1980. The project would then catch on with the international organization and by 1985, Rotarians all over the world contributed over US 850-million dollars and hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours to help inoculate the worlds children. Rotarys commitment to the program then moved the World Health Organization (WHO) to pass a resolution in 1988 to eradicate polio by 2000. After that, Rotary has been recognized by the United Nations as the key private partner in the eradication effort. In 2008, Rotary received a $100 million challenge grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Rotary committed to raise a counterpart of $100 million. In January 2009, Bill Gates announced a second challenge grant of $255 million. Rotary again committed to raise another $100 million. At the time of the second challenge grant, Bill Gates said: We know that its a formidable challenge to eradicate a disease that has killed and crippled children since at least the time of the ancient Egyptians. We dont know exactly when the last child will be affected. But we do have the vaccines to wipe it out. Countries do have the will to deploy all the tools at their disposal. If we all have the fortitude to see this effort through to the end, then we will eradicate polio. Since then, 80 percent of the worlds population is polio-free. Thanks to Rotarian Sergio Mulitsch di Palmenberg who started it all. Regrettably, he passed away in 1987. Source: Wikipedia.
