"Something to Ponder From Pastor Jerry

Tired of Hobby Lobby? Youre tired of hearing about Hobby Lobby and the Supreme Court, tired of all the talk of fines and health-care plans and reproductive rights, tired of being bombarded with words spoken in anger from both sides of the aisle. You want to put your fingers in your ears, switch the channel, and wait for the ruling and the rest of it to just go away. But even though you are tired, even though youve grown weary of having the same discussions about the same points, Hobby Lobby and fines and health-care plans still matter. They matter because your country the United States of America was founded on the principle that you were born with certain rights: the rights to seek and follow truth, to live according to your beliefs, to worship freely. And no one, not even the government, gets to tell you how to do that. Today, our federal government threatens that right, consistently refusing to protect religious liberty as our Constitution and the laws of nature demand. In the dozens of cases against the Health and Human Services contraceptive mandate, the government has started dictating the boundaries of religious beliefs, and to pick and choose which beliefs and which individuals deserve religious liberty protection. The contraceptive mandate, part of the Affordable Care Act, requires employers to provide a full range of 20 FDA-approved contraceptive devices, drugs and services in their health-care plans. These include emergency contraceptives with the ability to prevent implantation of an embryo in other words, the ability to end a human life. Catholics, Lutherans, and many other Americans find these drugs morally reprehensible. Yet, though objections to the mandate are strong and numerous with over 90 lawsuits filed so far the government has simply swept them aside. The mandates provisions allow for very narrow exemptions for houses of worship. Exemptions do not extend even to affiliates of those houses of worship; for example, a Catholic order of nuns, operating homes for the elderly poor, is not exempt. Nor are Christian colleges, nor are thousands of other religious non-profit organizations, which serve the public good. In the case of the non-profits, the government has come up with an empty accommodation that would force organizations to sign HHS forms directing third -party administrators to provide the drugs that the organizations cannot. As one plaintiff, the Little Sisters of the
2

Poor, explained, these forms are nothing more than permission slips. The Little Sisters cannot direct someone else to act immorally, just as they cannot act immorally themselves. The government has branded this particular belief meaningless. Neither the exemption nor the false accommodation extends to individuals who run their own businesses, like David and Barbara Green, owners of Hobby Lobby. The Greens morally oppose providing drugs that can prevent implantation and have filed suit against HHS, represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. In the Greens case, the government claims that moral convictions must be abandoned at the door of the workplace. The Greens may not run their own companies according to their consciences. Or, in return for staying true to their convictions, they will be forced to pay crushing fines. The governments distinctions under the mandate dont make sense. The government does not get to reduce God and the way in which He works down to what happens only in church or worship. By its definition, religious liberty stipulates that a church not the government must be permitted to form its own definition and its own boundaries. Moreover, God uses each of us in our vocations to serve those around us. This call to serve others and live according to our beliefs extends beyond our houses of worship, into our homes, our communities, and our work. To prevent individuals from following the dictates of their consciences is an abuse of power and a gross infringement on human dignity. As the leader of a Christian church body, I strongly object to the governments approach of picking and choosing whose beliefs merit consideration. Now, according to the government, Catholic nuns must authorize others to give out free contraceptives, and evangelical Christians must abandon their most deeply held convictions in the operations of their own businesses. What group, and what belief, will next be under attack? Friends, we may be weary. We may be tired. But we must stand together to protect our God-given right to religious liberty. This mandate threatens not only those whose religions specifically compel them to oppose it, but all Americans. We cannot allow our government to define the content of our beliefs or the degree of their significance. The Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison is the current and 13th president of The Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod.

Daily Devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries

"This Hour" March 21, 2004 Todays Reading: John 12:20-50 & Psalm 22 Now My heart is troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save Me from this hour? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name! John 12:27-28 Jesus knew about the plot. He foresaw the crowd stomping through the garden. He could hear the voice of Pontius Pilate. The hill of Calvary loomed ahead of Him. Jesus knewnow was this hour that fingerprint of God in human history. Our Lord could look at this hour and not shrink from it, but rather see it for what it was. Clearly, this hour would result in His suffering and death, but also this hour would glorify God. Because of this hour, Saul ceased persecuting the church and became one of her greatest missionaries. Because of this hour, the earliest Christians confessed Christ boldly, even at the cost of their own earthly lives. Because of this hour, Martin Luther yielded himself as Gods instrument to call His people back to the centrality and authority of His Word. When we look at our Lords way of bringing glory to His Father, its clear how misguided and mistaken are our attempts at glory. Often glory gets equated with personal recognition. When Jesus prayed, Father, glorify Your name, He backed away from anything personal and accepted that His Father deserved to be adored, praised, and glorified for this hourthe salvation of the world. Shouldnt we, too, step away from ourselves, knowing that because of what Jesus Christ did in this hour, the Father approves of us. Lets think, speak, act as glorifiers adorers praisers of God in this hour! Prayer Heavenly Father, graciously help us when this hour brings pain, hardship, or sorrow so that we may glorify Your name with true purity of heart, as did our Lord and Savior, through whom we pray. Amen. Response What does in this hour say to those seemingly drab, dull, meaningless things you have to do during the course of a day?

Youth are collecting plastic eggs, wrapped candy and other treats/toys for the annual group home Easter Egg Hunt scheduled for Sunday, 4/13/13. We are hoping to do the hunt for two of the boys homes which house 16 foster youth ages 7-12. Please leave any items by the mailboxes or in the kitchen with a note that it is for youth. The boys have already been asking me if we are going to have the hunt again this year-it is something they really look forward to! Youth will also be providing Easter breakfast this year, and will be asking for free -will donations. Thanks so much for always supporting youth. Although they are a small group, they are a talented, caring, helpful and amazing group of kids. Also, Adam will be graduating from boot camp on Good Friday, but if anyone wants to drop him a note before then, his address is: AB Wakefield Adam J 322TRS/FLT255 (Dorm A-4) 1320 Truemper St. Unit 364071 Lackland AFB TX 78236-6432 Thanks, cw

Why Palm Sunday? Palm branches are mentioned in only one of the four Gospels (see John 12:12-15). So why do we call the first day of Holy Week Palm Sunday? Tradition plays an important part in church history. During Jesus time, Rome was the worlds leading power. Whenever the Romans were victorious in battle, citizens traditionally threw palm branches in the returning heroes path. This was the accepted custom of reception. So when Jesus rode into Jerusalem, it was appropriate that he receive a heros welcome. One week later, he would be victorious over death.

SGSE is complete and the church is paid off. There is a number of things we need to upgrade , flooring, windows and lighting in the sanctuary, resurfacing parking lot, possibly replacing A/C in Social hall to name a few. We will discuss this at the voters meeting in April. Thanks to all who helped with SGSE, I couldnt have had a better team or support. Thanks again Earl Holy Cross before renovation

Semi-Annual Church Clean Up Come and be apart of whats Happening. Saturday, April 5th 8:00 am See you there!
Maundy Thursday What is Maundy Thursday, the Thursday of Holy Week all about? The word Maundy is a shortened version of the Latin word mandatum, which means commandment. At the Last Supper, Jesus gave his friends a new commandment. He told the disciples, I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another (John 13:34, NRSV). As Christians gather to eat and share Holy Communion on Maundy Thursday, we should make a special effort to exhibit our love and respect for one another. Let us seek out people whom we dont naturally have affection for and express our wish that the living Christ may dwell in them and bless them.

Mission Grant Story

I CAN SERVING AT-RISK CHILDREN WITH LEARNING NEEDS $99,000

Lutheran Special Education Ministries (LSEM) has successfully served children with learning needs and their families in a Christ-centered educational setting since 1873 when it opened as a residential school for deaf children. In 1976 LSEM also began serving hearing children with learning needs as well and has since expanded programs and services to include a presence in nine states. Organizations professing their faith within the context of academic instruction are not eligible to receive financial support from federally funded programs. LSEM shares the Gospel message while serving children who have learning needs or are at -risk of failure. Student tuition for this three-hour after-school program prevents many from attending. Establishing a scholarship fund to cover program expense is a means of reaching out to neighborhood youth; serving them by providing supplemental instruction in reading, mathematics, study skills, and fine arts within a Christ-centered setting; and enabling them by promoting and encouraging spiritual growth and academic progress, as well as enrichment through fine arts programming. This $99,000 Scholarship Fund will provide tuition for a minimum of 55 students. During their time at the center, students rotate through and participate in each of the activity areas including literacy and/or mathematics instruction, study skill/homework completion, and fine arts. University students needing fieldwork experience hours are used as tutors for study skill (homework) sessions, along with volunteers from the church community. While this after-school/summer program is structured to address academic deficits and enhance brain development, it also provides an outreach opportunity for sharing Gods saving grace through Jesus Christ among community families in need of spiritual healing.

Daily Devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries By Pastor Ken Klaus, Speaker Emeritus of The Lutheran Hour "Stepping Up" March 5, 2014 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them .... Romans 12:4-6a A few weeks ago, military re-enactors in Charleston, South Carolina, revived the memory of the Confederate submarine Hunley. If youve never heard of the Hunley, let me share its story: during the War Between the States, the Union Navy had managed to hold a blockade on the South Carolina city of Charleston. Without the most basic of supplies being delivered, the citizens of that beautiful community had become desperate. As you know, desperate times call for desperate measures. That desperation lead to the building of the Confederate submarine called the Hunley. May I tell you the vessel, while brilliant in its conception, was a death trap? During its first training exercise, the Hunley sank and killed five members of the crew. Less than two months later, the vessel sank again. That time it took the lives of all eight crew members, including that of H. L. Hunley, the ships creator. You might think these catastrophes would mark the end of the ill -fated sub. Not so. Another crew, a crew composed completely of volunteers, came forward to pilot the sub and break the blockade. To that end, on the night of February 17, 1864, the Hunley went down in the history books as being the first submarine to ever sink another vessel. Yes, the Hunley went down in the history books, but in doing so the Hunley also took the lives of a third crew as it went down in Charleston Harbor. There the boat stayed until it was recovered more than 130 years later. Knowing that story, I have often wondered why did that third crew volunteer? While many reasons can be offered, I can only think of one that holds water: they believed in the cause. If that is the case, then consider two observations:
18

1 - Even though Jesus knew His life would end on Calvarys cross, He still became one of us. This He did so He could carry our sins, defeat our enemies, and rise on the third day. The cause of doing the Fathers will and saving us from damnation must have been a precious cause to Him. 2 - Why is it that many of our churches must plead for volunteers to come forward to teach Sunday school, be part of an evangelism team, or do the other things a vibrant congregation should do in thanks to the Savior? Is it because these causes are not important to us? I pray not. I pray that a paraphrase of the hymn-writers words may be in our grateful hearts. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord ... Let none hear us idly saying, "There is nothing I can do," while the souls of men are dying, and the Master calls for us. Take the task He gives us gladly. Let His work our pleasure be; answer quickly when He calls us, "Here am I, send me, send me!" In Jesus Name I ask it. Amen.

Why the cross? In Jesus day, the Roman army ruling Israel carried out capital punishment by using a wooden cross. Criminals, troublemakers and others who threatened society were crucified in public places for everyone to see. False charges were levied against Jesus. Caiaphas, the Jewish high priest, accused him of blasphemy against God and of being a threat to Roman rule. Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, had Jesus nailed to a cross on a Friday. Perhaps ironically to non-Christians, that day came to be called Good Friday. God reached down into our Lords grave and restored him to life. The cross that had been a symbol of horror became a symbol of joy. Thats why we sing with gusto: In the cross of Christ I glory, Towering oer the wrecks of time, All the light of sacred story, Gathers round its head sublime. Good Friday? At first glance, Good Friday appears to be a misnomer. It seems inconsistent that the day of Christs crucifixion should in any way be described as good. But that seeming inconsistency vanishes when we understand that the ancient meaning of good was holy. The word holy is entirely consistent with the suffering and cross that Christ endured for us. Hence, Good Friday is also known as Holy Friday.

A.A.A.D.D - KNOW THE SYMPTOMS! Thank goodness theres a name for this disorder. Age-Activated Attention Deficit Disorder. This is how it manifests: I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing. As I start toward the garage, I notice mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mail box earlier. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys on the table, Put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table, And notice that the can is full. So, I decide to put the bills back On the table and take out the garbage first But then I think, Since Im going to be near the mailbox When I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take my check book off the table, And see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, So I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Pepsi Id been drinking. Im going to look for my checks, But first I need to push the Pepsi aside So that I dont accidentally knock it over. The Pepsi is getting warm, And I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold. As I head toward the kitchen with the Pepsi, A vase of flowers on the counter catches my eyethey need water. I put the Pepsi on the counter and Discover my reading glasses that Ive been searching for all morning.
20

I decide I better put them back on my desk, But first Im going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter , Fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, Ill be looking for the remote, But I wont remember that its on the kitchen table, So I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, But first Ill water the flowers. I pour some water in the flowers, But quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back on the table, Get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, I head down the hall trying to Remember what I was planning to do. At the end of the day: The car isnt washed, The bills arent paid, There is a warm can of Pepsi sitting on the counter, The flowers dont have enough water, There is still only 1 check in my check book, I cant find the remote, I cant find my glasses, And I dont remember what I did with the car keys. Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, Im really baffled because I know I was busy all day, And Im really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, And Ill try to get some help for it, but first Ill check my e-mail. Do me a favor. Forward this message to everyone you know, Because I dont remember who Ive sent it to. Dont laugh if this isnt you yet, your day is coming! P.S. I dont remember who sent it to me, so if it was you, Im sorry
