We have proposed an idea that can stop the polluted water that escapes from the clutches of your

exhaust tip. There are more than 18 million cars on the road as of 2005 statistics. With our idea we hope to stop 50ml of this nasty run off a year per vehicle! We could potentially save 900,000L of run off from entering our water sheds. Our product, Liquid Gusts, could sky rocket! We live in an area where our water comes from the South Saskatchewan River. The water has been fed from, the Bow River and the Red Deer River. Only 4-10% of our water comes from glaciers. The water has been through Calgary and came here after passing through countless towns and cities. The water will run to Prince Albert where it will join the North Saskatchewan to form the Saskatchewan River which in time will run into Lake Winnipeg, but not before reaching Tobin Lake. The unusual problem we have identified has a negative impact on our watersheds. Chances are that you have seen this liquid dripping from the tailpipe of a running vehicle but just disregarded it or overlooked it. The liquid exhaust emissions can contain carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides or if the car in not in good repair pollutants like engine coolant and rust. In reality, this liquid is full of pollutants that can trickle into our watersheds. This liquid is not only escaping from exhaust pipesit is escaping most peoples attention and polluting the environment! When vehicles get cold the exhaust condenses and forms into a water-like material that slowly drips off the end of the exhaust tip. While this just looks like water, it is actually full of pollutants. Our idea is to create a product that will catch condensed exhaust pollutants so they dont run into the watershed surrounding our houses. Our design, which we have called Liquid Gusts, will catch the water with a piece of wire reinforced mesh cloth. The wire will also increase the amount of exhaust pressure the mesh cloth can withstand. When the polluted water hits the mesh it will drip down into a holding tank. This will work by the laws of gravity. A tray will then catch the liquid pollutants and store it until it is emptied in a place where it can safely be recycled. Through this design we will stop the harmful watery residue coming from the exhaust of motor vehicles from contaminating our local water streams. It will be possible to install this amazing product on any vehicle. Liquid Gusts will be simple to install; all that is needed is to assemble our product all we will need is a catch tray, a hose clamp, pliers, reinforced mesh and wire. We also recommend adding a clear coat paint (to prevent it from corroding). All of the components will be included in the Liquid Gusts kit and we will include clearly written instructions so that most vehicle owners could install our product without having to take it to automotive repair shop. Our product can be installed on virtually any vehicle. We realize this type of pollution is a problem on heavy machinery which has exhaust on the bottom of the vehicle, so we will continue to modify our design to fit onto these specialized types of exhaust tips. To assemble our product all we will need is a catch tray, a hose clamp, pliers, mesh and wire. We estimate the cost to make each Liquid Gust product to be $16.03. We will sell Liquid Gusts for $25.

We recognize that there is a problem with many modern day products that are designed with a limited life span. They are bought by consumers and then break and continually need to be replaced. By producing, purchasing, disposing of and replacing low quality products, more senseless damage in being done to our environment. Our product will be durable and long lasting and this will also be helping the environment. For a pilot project, we plan to sell Liquid Gusts for the cost of building it, to anyone in our school whose family is willing to try it and provide us with feedback so we can determine whether we need to enhance or change the design of our product. We are hoping to launch this product at the Draggins Rod and Custom Car Show on April 18-19, 2014 in Saskatoon. After unveiling our product there, we will start advertising on Kijiji and EBay. If we sell enough units we will present Liquid Gusts to a local department store to gain their support and enthusiasm for our product and hopefully they will be willing to advertise and sell it for us. We plan to have three models of Liquid Gusts: one for small cars, one for trucks and another for items such as work

equipment or farming or mining equipment. Once we have these designs in place we will approach several companies in Saskatoon including Canadian Tire, Saskatoon Transit, City of Saskatoon, First Student Canada and Saskatoon Schools with a proposal for them to try and potentially purchase our product to install on their vehicles. We are very optimistic about the interest that our product will create. We know we will eventually need funding in order to produce it in larger quantities and at a rate to keep up with the demand. Because our product is one that will help preserve our watersheds, we believe there are many private companies and Government agencies that would be interesting in funding Liquid Gusts. We hope that at some point in the future all vehicles will, by law, have to have a product like ours to prevent contamination of watersheds and help preserve and protect our environment. Exhaust runoff is an ever growing problem in Canada and Liquid Gusts will prevent that contaminating runoff from happening. It will save our neighbours downstream from the pollution this causes. It will provide a start to a cleaner future for our cars and us!
