Worksheet 1d Reading for Pleasure Passage 1 Labrador Retriever The Labrador Retriever (also Labrador, or Lab for short) is one of several kinds of Retriever, a type of hunting dog. The Labrador is a popular breed ; the dogs of this breed are loving, kind and compassionate and widely used by police and other officials for work. Typically, labradors are athletic and love to swim, play catch and retrieve objects and are good with young children. The modern labrador's ancestors originated on the island of Newfoundland, now part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The founding breed of the labrador was the St. Johns Water Dog, a breed that grew on the island in the 16th century. The ancestors of the St. John's Dog are not known, but were probably a mix of English, Irish and Portuguese working dogs. Fishermen in Newfoundland originally used the St. Johns dog to assist in carrying ropes between boats, towing and helping to retrieve fishnets in the water. The labradors loyalty and special skills were valuable assets for fishermen. A number of St. Johns Dogs were brought back to England in the early 19th century. They were prized as sporting and hunting dogs and many kennels breeding these dogs developed in England. The first written reference to the breed was in 1814 in a sports manual called Instructions to Young Sportsmen by Colonel Peter Hawker. By 1870 the name Labrador Retriever became common in England.

One day in June, the weather was cool and I studied the whole day. I was very tired. I went to my bed and fell asleep. Suddenly there came a friend to me and asked me to go with him. That friend left my town two years ago so it was strange to meet him. I went with my friend. We walked into a very dark hall and when there were steps, we went upstairs. There were a garden of flowers and I was in amazement because of the scene. Then an angry man beckoned me to come near. I was afraid but I had to go near because in my back there were two men holding a gun.
