Title: Electric Static Protection (ESD) Awareness Program Policy: It is the policy of Solid Systems to ensure all employees and subcontractors are educated, trained and adhere to ESD control protection Purpose: !o pro"ide understanding, awareness and training when necessary Scope: Applies to all warehouse, wor#shop technicians, $ield Engineers and subcontracted labor What is ESD? Static charge is an unbalanced electrical charge at rest !ypically, it is created by insulator surfaces rubbing together or pulling apart %ne surface gains electrons, while the other surface loses electrons !his results in an unbalanced electrical condition #nown as static charge &hen a static charge mo"es from one surface to another, it becomes ESD ESD is a miniature lightning bolt of charge that mo"es between two surfaces that ha"e different potentials It can occur only when the "oltage differential between the two surfaces is sufficiently high to brea# down the dielectric strength of the medium separating the two surfaces &hen a static charge mo"es, it becomes a current that damages or destroys gate o'ide, metalli(ation, and )unctions ESD can occur in any one of four ways: a charged body can touch a component, a charged component can touch a grounded surface, a charged machine can touch a component, or an electrostatic field can induce a "oltage across a dielectric sufficient to brea# it down Training and Certification ESD*awareness training is established to pro"ide a basic understanding of ESD problems It is open to all warehouse and technical wor#shop personnel, technicians, field ser"ice engineers, and management All personnel who come in close pro'imity with ESD*sensiti"e e+uipment must recei"e ESD training ,o ESD program can be successful unless people who handle ESD* sensiti"e e+uipment understand the need for ESD controls and are trained in local ESD control policies, procedures, and re+uirements -ompletion of ESD*awareness training is registered in the employee.s training record Basic Procedures Grounding /rounding is important when handling electronic components &hen you are grounded, you cannot build up static and damage electronic components /rounding means that you ha"e become electrically neutral &hen unprotected ESD*sensiti"e de"ices are handled, you should wor# at an ESD protected wor#station, an appro"ed static*safe station, with a grounded static dissipati"e wor# surface Each person within twel"e inches of unprotected ESD de"ices must be grounded (/rounding only neutrali(es conductors )

!here are 0 types of grounding: Resistive Ground A resisti"e ground is a connection to ground through a wire and has a current limiting resistor 1esistance in the conductor is a property that opposes the flow of electricity through it A resistor is used in a foot strap A resistor in a foot strap will eliminate all static in a person within a fraction of a second Co on Point Ground -ommon point ground is a terminal where people and ESD wor# surfaces can all be connected to ground !wo or more grounding conductors are connected to the same electrical potential !he person and wor# surface are connected to one common point ground, usually the building 2ou will typically find this type of grounding in manufacturing or assembly areas ESD !voidance 3ecause ESD can occur only when different potentials are in"ol"ed, the best way to a"oid ESD damage is to #eep the e+uipment at the same potential as their surroundings !he logical reference potential is ESD ground So, the first and most important rule in a"oiding ESD damage is to #eep ESD*sensiti"e e+uipment and e"erything that comes in close pro'imity to it at ESD ground potential $our supplementary rules support this first rule: 4 Any person handling ESD*sensiti"e e+uipment must be grounded with a wrist strap or ESD protecti"e footwear, used in con)unction with a conducti"e or static*dissipati"e floor or floor mat 0 !he wor# surface where de"ices are placed for handing, processing, testing, etc , must be made of static*dissipati"e material and be grounded to ESD ground 5 All insulator materials either must be remo"ed from the wor# area or they must be neutrali(ed with an ioni(er Static*generating clothes should be co"ered with an ESD* protecti"e coat 6 &hen e+uipment is being stored, transferred between operations or wor#stations, or shipped, they must be placed in Anti*Static pac#aging whose inside surface is static dissipati"e "ield Service Engineers $ield Ser"ice Engineers are supplied with a complete ESD field ser"ice #it 7andling of ESD* sensiti"e e+uipment should only be carried out on the ESD mat with the appropriate connection to ground ha"ing been made, effecti"ely creating an temporary ESD protected area ESD #andling Procedures Chec$list: %nly handle unpac#aged ESD sensiti"e items 8ESDS9 in the ESD protected area 8EPA9 when grounded %nly trained people in the EPA /round all conductors including people in the EPA !est wrist straps at least daily If ESD footwear is used, test at least daily ESD field ser"ice #its to be tested as often as is possible at SS-S wor#shop :isually chec# that grounding cords are connected ;eep wristband snug, foot grounder grounding tab in shoe, and ESD coats fastened closed ;eep wor# area clean and clear of all non essential insulators
