Alzheimers care

alzheimers care

utting a loved one into a managed care facility can be a difficult decision, especially for those who have a loved one suffering with Alzheimers or dementia. Fortunately, there are many options when it comes to Alzheimers and dementia care centers, though it can be difficult to determine one centers level of care over another. If you find yourself in the difficult situation of having to place a loved one in an Alzheimers center, look for these features to find the perfect program for your loved one and your family: First, look for a care facility that is dedicated solely to treating those patients with Alzheimers and dementia. These disorders are very complex and require staff that is both knowledgeable and dedicated to their patients. Look for a facility that employs staff that is very knowledgeable in the care and treatment of those with Alzheimers. Ask to see the centers policies regarding experience requirements of staff as well as ongoing or continuing education for the staff. An Alzheimers care facility should treat each patient as an individual. A patient should be evaluated to determine where he falls in the Alzheimers

alzheimers care

spectrum beginning, middle or end stages and care should be tailored to the patients personal needs. Be sure that your loved one is assessed on a regular basis as care requirements change with the level of Alzheimers or dementia he or she is experiencing. Someone in the beginning stages, for example, may need only minimal assistance while someone in end-stage dementia may need 24-hour care and attention. The best facilities understand this and require regular evaluations and adjust the level of care as needed. Check out the living environment at the center. Are there gardens for relaxing? Quiet sitting areas for meditating or reading? Are the rooms comfortable? Your loved one will be living at this center, and it is important that he or she feels at home. This will ensure your loved ones ease of transition into the care center. Living in a care center should not feel like boot camp, nor should it feel like a locked hospital ward. A perfect facility will ensure that their residents are just that: residents. Your loved one should be able to live in a way that he or she is comfortable and happy while having access to round-the-clock

medical care. Be sure that the facility has activities, outings and other services for the residents. A great center will give residents access to supervised picnics, fitness classes, craft classes, religious events and field trips to ensure that their residents remain as active as possible for as long as possible. If your loved one will be leaving a pet behind, look for a center with a pet therapy program. Before deciding on a residential facility, tour the center and get a feel for the environment. Ask to see a model resident room and, if permitted, ask to speak to some of the residents. If you can, tour the center on a weekend when residents are more likely to have visitors; doing so will allow you to speak to other family members who have had to make the decision you are making now. Those professionals who care for people with Alzheimers and dementia know that family support makes all the difference. The center should provide ample opportunity for family visits, activities and outings that the family can take part in. By following these guidelines, youll be assured of picking the best program available to you and your loved one.

auto repair shop

ll automobiles at some point require repairs or service. Having an existing relationship with an auto repair shop will save time and hassle when your car needs an immediate repair. If youre not sure how to build a good working relationship with a shop, try taking your car in for regular tune-ups and maintenance; a well-cared-for car will run longer and more smoothly. I also will have lower operating and service costs. Some things to keep in mind when searching for an auto repair shop: Under 40 percent of new auto shop customers are walk-ins. Most people are referred by friends, relatives or co-workers. If you havent received any recommendations, make sure you ask your prospective auto shop for references. The Better Business Bureau can help you determine whether the repair shops performance and reliability measure up to the industry standards for expertise and professionalism. If you travel often, look for an auto repair shop

that offers a national warranty. For instance, a warranty of 12,000 miles or 12 months is handy for issues that keep cropping up, which is especially likely with older cars. Check the shops range of services and whether the shop has the latest technologies to properly diagnose problems with newer cars. For example, can your prospective shop handle brake systems, electrical components and warranty repairs? Do they provide a loaner, rental car, or shuttle service while your car is being repaired? Look for a good customer satisfaction policy, equipment that is in good condition, good lighting, and cleanliness and organization. These factors all contribute to a level of professionalism, gaining customers trust, and to optimal service. Look for brand names and proper certification. Does the auto repair shop use brand-name parts? These parts are engineered to meet the manufacturers specifications and will likely come with a warranty. Are the auto technicians certified by a specific car

manufacturer, the National Institute for Automotive Services or Automotive Science Excellence? Is the shop approved by the American Automobile Association? If so, this indicates a customer approval rating of 90 percent or higher and the ability to adequately perform the services advertised. Whether you are considering a big name franchise or an independently owned shop, compare the usual services and fees of each shop to familiarize yourself with average price ranges. Dont choose a shop based purely on lower prices; shoddy service or poor quality parts can mean more repairs and higher costs in the long run. After youve found a shop you like, try to establish a good working relationship with the mechanic. Since your car needs preventive maintenance anyway, take it to your new mechanic for a trial run such as an oil change or air conditioning check. Some services may be offered free of charge; these can provide you with a good idea of the service you will get.

daycare

hoosing a daycare is not a task to be taken lightly. Your children will likely spend just as much time in daycare as you do at work, so its important to choose a place where youll feel comfortable leaving your child. Some daycares offer a better quality of care than others, so you should research each place you are considering. Before making your decision, visit all the places you are thinking about. Call the director to make an appointment, but also try to stop by unannounced at another time to see how things go when the daycare isnt expecting observers. Be sure to bring your children with you so you can get a feel for how well they will adapt to their new environment. Observe your child while you are there and gauge his or her comfort level. Here are some things to look out for when choosing a daycare. STAFF One thing that can make or break a daycare is the quality and quantity of its employees. First, find out the ratio of caregivers to children. Even the best caregiver cant provide good, thorough care to 30 children at once without help. Make sure they follow good hygiene habits so sicknesses arent spread around the daycare. Also try to observe how the employees interact with the children. Make sure they have a good rapport with their charges and seem to genuinely like kids. Look out for whether the employees play favorites. Good daycare employees will spend equal time with everyone and make each child feel special.

BUILDING Make sure the daycare is housed in a safe and welcoming environment. Look for signs that it was decorated with children in mind, such as bright colors and fun dcor. Be sure the lighting is adequate and ask to check out the bathroom, dining area, and the place where children take their naps. You should also spend some time evaluating any outdoor play areas. Every area of the daycare grounds should be set up with safety in mind. Look for locks on doors, sharp edges and dangerous objects that could be in reach of children. ENTERTAINMENT AND ACTIVITIES Your child will spend a lot of time at daycare and you dont want him or her to be bored. Ensure that plenty of activities are offered to keep your childs attention throughout the day. Ask the director what kids do there during the day. Free play is great for the imagination, but there should be structured activities as well such as crafts, music, stories and age-appropriate lessons. DISCIPLINE Ask the daycare providers how they discipline the children. You might want to inquire about how they deal with specific issues you feel they may run into with your child. For example, if your child has trouble sharing, ask how they deal with that. Make sure they take your questions seriously and give thoughtful answers. Also inquire about the rules of the daycare.

daycare

OTHER QUESTIONS Find out what the daycares sickness policy is. The best daycares will have a somewhat stringent policy when it comes to illness. This is ideal because it can protect your child from catching viruses frequently. You dont want to pay for a month of daycare and end up using all your sick days at work to stay home with your child because she keeps catching bugs from other kids. They should also ask for your childs vaccination records. Throughout your visit, make sure your child seems to genuinely like the place in question. See if your child interacts well with the other children. If your child is shy, use your best judgment and see if the teachers are good at getting timid kids to engage with others. Observe how your child interacts with the teachers and pay attention to how they address your child during the visit as well. Look out for toys and activities that your child enjoys. If your child is of speaking age, ask him directly for his opinion of the daycare. Choosing a daycare is an important decision, so dont rush into finding a place. Take your time and evaluate each option thoroughly before committing to one in particular. If things dont work out, dont hesitate to find another daycare that is more suitable for your child. It may seem overwhelming, but with a bit of observation and intuition, you should have no trouble finding a suitable daycare for your child.

Alzheimers care
IT MAY BE A GIFT TO THOSE YOU LOVE It was Ben Franklin who said nothing is certain but death and taxes. This article does not deal with taxes, but rather the other certainty in life. Everyone dies, so a discussion of funeral planning is never irrelevant. When someone we love dies, there are varying stages of anger, confusion and numbness. The funeral is one of the most significant means we have of dealing with grief. The funeral ritual helps us focus our emotions and brings a sense of meaning to death. It confirms the reality of death and provides a catalyst for mourners to talking about the deceased. Experts tell us being able to talk about the life of a deceased loved one is one of the first steps toward accepting death. PREARRANGING YOUR FUNERAL Prearranging your funeral is not much different than any other planning you have carried out during your lifetime. You buy insurance in case of fire, flood, theft or death. These coverages are purchased as an act of love and responsibility for those you love in case an unfortunate incident occurs. A pre-planned funeral accomplishes the same goals. A pre-planned funeral can prevent your family members from having to make a number of significant decisions at a time when they are confused and upset. They will have enough on their minds dealing with grief without having to make several important decisions in a very short period of time. Experts tell us that there are an average of 50 decisions to be made when arranging a funeral. Adding to the need for pre-planning is the fact that our lifestyle is more complex in todays world. Family members often live in different states, complicating rapid decision making. Further complications stem from frustrations that occur when dealing with government agencies in different states. A solid pre-planning session can prevent these complications which can loom very large during a time of pain and sorrow.

HOW TO PLAN A call to a funeral director is a good beginning in making sure you have covered all your bases in your planning. He or she can lead you through a process to ensure you dont forget vital information in your plan. Some funeral directors offer free booklets that provide a punch list of topics to think through and record your wishes. Topics in these guides include funeral details ranging from visitation to the memorial service and alternatives from burial, cremation or entombment. These are obvious decision, but other important topics include categories that will provide a helping hand to your family. Additional topics include organizations to be notified with phone numbers, persons to be notified, medical history, estate information, banking information, real estate holdings and insurance policies. Many include obituary information outlines, personal property inventories and special instruction and information pages. There may also be information regarding the importance of your will and how to go about ensuring it is accurate and updated. PRE-FUNDING YOUR FUNERAL Pre-funding your funeral also is an important consideration. Your funeral director can show you options which will waive your family from possible financial burden later. You may take out a life insurance policy which would cover funeral expenses, or invest in a funeral trust account or final expense insurance policy. Funds invested in a pre-funded funeral would cover the total cost of selected services and merchandise since interest earned by the funds will offset the effect of inflation. Government regulations safeguard your investment so funds will always be available for use. Another important part in your plan is to make sure your love ones know where your recorded wishes can be found. Millions of dollars in government and insurance death benefits go unclaimed

because family members do not know where to find information they need at the time of death. Some considerations that also need to remain in the forefront of the pre-planning agenda: Social Security: When a loved one dies, dependents and survivors may be eligible for certain benefits such as death payments, survivors benefits and Medicare. Qualifications depend on several factors such as age, marital status, number of dependent and whether employment was under Social Security. Your Social Security account should be verified periodically to ensure contributions are posted. All benefits must be applied for since payments are not automatic. Veterans benefits: Honorably-discharged veterans are entitled to benefits that may affect decisions about funeral arrangements. For example, veterans may qualify for a cemetery plot and burial allowances, a headstone and burial flag, as well as pension for survivors. Medicaid: There are provisions under Federal Title 19 that allow an individual to shelter funds to serve the family later by providing for funeral arrangements. Since qualifications vary for each of these options, it is best to discuss your situation with your funeral director.

leges at a particular facility. Doctors frequently send patients to certain hospitals simply because they are familiar with the site, have admitting privileges and are able to efficiently function there. Typically, insurance carriers pay the cost of services from a preferred provider, including hospitals. However, your out-ofpocket costs will be higher if you select a hospital that is outside of your insurers preferred provider network. The high price of surgical procedures and necessary nursing services can lead to a very substantial final bill. Therefore, whether or not your insurance will cover most of the expense will likely play a significant role in which hospital you choose. If your choice of hospital is not based on location or insurance coverage, consider other features a hospital may have to offer. Many hospitals offer accreditation with the Joint Commission, an organization that implements specific standards of care within medical facilities. If the Joint Commission accredits a hospital, you can feel confident that the facility maintains high levels of quality in areas ranging from nursing care practice to storage and organization. Hospitals that are accredited by the Joint Commission are subject to frequent performance evaluations, and applicable standards are continuously reviewed for possible improvement. Consider hospitals that have won awards or have received certification in areas of quality and consistency of care. The Magnet program offers recognition for excellence in nursing care and other aspects of hospital work. Such distinctions are a great thing to look for when searching for the best hospital for your needs. Not all hospitals are Magnet certified. The award is given to select few facilities across the country. If you have an option of choosing a hospital that has Magnet recognition, you can have confidence that it will provide you with truly excellent care. Depending on what procedure you need to have performed, choosing a hospital that specializes in particular areas of surgery or medical care may be necessary. Many hospitals care for every type of patient that comes through its doors but also have several areas in which they specialize. For example, two hospitals in the same city may offer care, but one

t is a good idea to select a hospital before you need one. When illness strikes or you suffer an unexpected injury, it is important to choose the hospital best suited to your specific needs. By checking in advance the services and facilities of the hospitals near you, you will be better able to make an informed decision if the time arrives. While it is certainly true that most hospitals follow similar practices and procedures in the care of patients, there are facilities that are better able to handle your situation than some of their counterparts. When it comes time to pick a hospital for treatment, it is necessary to weigh the pros and cons of each one. As you attempt to determine the best hospital for your needs, physical location is sure to play a large role in your choice. It is easy to see why this is the case, as you will be more inclined to select a facility that is convenient to your home or workplace. For some, there really is only one adequate hospital in their area, and choosing a different, more distant location would require additional travel time and effort that may simply be unnecessary. While it is common for people to choose hospitals that are physically close to home so that friends and family can easily visit, other factors may point to a different decision. If there are alternative facilities that are farther away but offer more specialized service, it may be wise to keep them in mind as you deliberate. Another common factor influencing hospital choice is whether your chosen physician has privi-

specializes in gastroenterology, while another has an advanced cardiac unit. The hospitals may even transfer patients between locations to ensure the highest level of care. Depending on the needs of the patient, and the particular illness or injury involved, the hospital with a relevant specialty unit may be the obvious choice. Choosing a high quality hospital is essential in order to achieve the best outcome during instances of illness or injury. Hospitals offer a wide range of care and service types, and it is important to analyze a series of considerations before you decide. Determining which types of care and treatment are offered at different facilities, and carefully balancing your personal priorities are the best ways to make a wise choice when selecting the hospital that is best for you.

a motorcycle shop
s a motorcycle rider, in todays economy, the first thing I think about is price vs. quality. After all, an oil change is still just an oil change. We love our scooters, and we want the absolute best for them; we want the best bang for our bucks! Short and simple, we refuse to settle for second best when our beloved machines care is in question. That is what keeps us alive when out on our two-wheeled adventures. Pulling up to a motorcycle dealer, we usually see a huge parking lot with a huge building. Sometimes we get greeted by a service manager and other times we dont. Someones got to pay for that building, the wall-to-wall accessories and that huge lot. When you get the bill for that $300 plus oil change, you find out real fast that YOU get to pay for all of that. Did they remember your name; did they remember that your front tire was a little low last time and double check it today? What I personally look for in a motorcycle shop is what else am I paying for? Am I helping someone to feed their family? Am I buying a politician so that they can rob me of more later? Am I making a payment on the service writers Maserati? Those huge beautiful buildings come out of OUR pockets, not the dealers pockets, trust me. I also look for what else I can get for my money? Do they have somewhere for me to sit and wait? Do I need a ride home? Can they get to it today? Its an oil change people, they should be able to do it right then and there. Sit down have a soda pop, and before you know it, they are bringing your baby back out for you!

Any scooter shop, and even more so the Mom and Pop shops, have to step up and be there for us like they have always been. They know my name, they know my bike and they know what I want usually before I walk in the door. I wont get a $300 oil change at a dealership when I can get it at an Indie (Independent) shop for far less using the same quality product the dealer uses. The mechanic, knows me, knows my bike and knows what problem areas my brand or model might have, so he checks those out as well. For my money, I like Mom and Pop! What else might they offer? Well lets see... The big dealers offer TV and free coffee... WOW! For a $300 oil change Id expect a beautiful young waitress to deliver a drink of my choosing in a nice lounge while listening to soothing mood music that might get me ready for the fleecing Im fixin to get at the cash register. At a Mom and Pop, Indie shop, I usually talk with the owner, while kicking back enjoying a cold one. I can wander back every now and then to enjoy a conversation with the mechanic while he meticulously checks over my ride to be sure there wont be any problems. I get to tell HIM of any problem I might have had and not try to explain to a service writer what happened, who tells a shop foreman, who tells a supervisor, who in turn tries to tell the service technician what I said. I like going straight to the man (or woman) who can do something about it and not beg and plead for the right answer! Mom and Pops have to earn a living so in turn they have to earn our business in ways that the

big conglomerate dealers cant. They know who we are, they answer to us and not a board of stock holders. They offer services, and products well beyond what we need so we will enjoy coming to visit with them and occasionally spend a few dollars. Where else can we sit and talk to the owner of a motorcycle shop mechanic, his wife and even his children, whiles drinking a cold one enjoying the company of many more bikers on an open stage? Mom and Pop offer what I enjoy as a rider, a biker and even as a person. They offer camaraderie, a sense of belonging to something beyond a business relationship. They offer much more than an oil change. There will be times when we need the dealerships, and a good Mom and Pop shop will even make that appointment for you. That is pride in service that no other can offer. How do I choose a motorcycle shop? I choose the one where I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, they stand behind what they do. They go the extra mile to earn my dollar and they know my bike and me like family.

When choosing natural health products insist on quality items made by reputable companies and sold by reliable merchants to be sure you are getting items with pure ingredients with a minimum of fillers and with no harmful petrochemicals. For twenty years, daughter Laura and I have been providing quality natural health items through the Learnn Tree Health Shoppe, 1510 SE First Street in Mineral Wells. All items have been selected for the needs and wants of local citizens. When I acquired the Shoppe, there were very few items on the shelves and even fewer customers. When a customer wanted an item, I ordered one for the customer and two for the shelves. This policy continues so that every item is because of local needs and wants. And we still order items for customers. We think personalized service is important in selecting products. We can offer several choices for the same issue, whether health or diet or household usage. And we help select the item best suited to that persons needs and lifestyle.

nursing home
f you and your aging loved one are considering full-time nursing care, be sure to, invest plenty of time to choose the right facility. A quality environment will help your parent, grandparent, sibling or other loved one live a happy and stable life. You benefit from having peace of mind as well. There are several factors to consider when choosing a high-quality care center for your loved ones. A good choice will mean a higher quality of life for people facing increasing physical frailty and less stress for their families. Visit the Facility The first step is taking a tour of the potential facility. You should get a good vibe from the center. A physical visit also provides clues about the general atmosphere and morale of the residents. Lots of natural light, a cheerful dcor, attractive wall art and hints of laughter from the staff and patients are good attributes. While on the tour, pay close attention to its cleanliness, staffing levels and the meeting of the residents needs. Is the air fresh and free from unpleasant odors such as urine, feces and stale food? Are there enough nurses and other atten-

dants on duty? Do the residents look happy, are they dressed appropriately and do they seem clean and freshly bathed? Bring the prospective resident along with you on the tour. The facility may become his or her home, and he or she deserves a voice in selecting or rejecting a facility. Feelings of safety and welcome are cues that this could be a positive living experience. Residents quality of life is enhanced by opportunities for socializing. Look for a facility that offers regular activity periods for music and crafts, an outdoor area for enjoying the sunshine. Most nursing home facilities will be happy to provide you with a tour of their homes. Once you have toured the building, request a consultation with a staff member. This will provide the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and address any special needs of the patient. Possible lines of questioning include the availability of different types of physical and occupational therapy, accommodation of patients doctors appointments outside the facility and access to barbers and hairdressers by the residents. Ask Other People It may be possible to strike up a conversation with a relative of a patient currently in the nursing home. Ask them for their honest opinions of the facility. Good questions include queries about the staff and the quality of care received by the residents. Solicit their input on whether to place your own loved one in the facility. Residents family members are usually eager to share their experiences and impressions with you. They know all too well the anxieties you are having as you make this important decision.

Ask the Doctor If youre still undecided about a placement in the facility you toured and the answers you received from patients families, talk with your loved ones primary care physician. He or she may be able to suggest good nursing facilities in the area or provide information on similar homes. The physician may recommend a couple of additional facilities that might not have appeared on your original list. If the patient has special needs, the doctor may be aware of a facility or center that can best meet these specific requirements. It is never easy making the decision to place a loved one in a nursing facility. Tour a few centers, decide which ones meet or exceed yours and your loved ones expectations and carefully weigh your impressions and the recommendations of others. You are making one of lifes most difficult choices. It takes time and diligence to research and tour even a narrowed list of nursing facilities. The effort will pay off in terms of better quality of life for your loved one and peace of mind for you.

ont overlook the importance of choosing the right pharmacist. This medical professional is your first stop for drug information. A good pharmacist will help you understand how a medication may affect you. He can also inform you if new medication will conflict with another prescription. Finding the right pharmacist is just as important as having the right doctor. So what factors should you consider in choosing a pharmacist? Location and Hours Look for a pharmacy in a convenient location, such as near your workplace or home. Is the pharmacy open 24-hours a day? Will it be easy for you to get to there during business hours? Finding a pharmacy with a handy location and hours is critical to helping you obtain both your medication and the answers to any questions you may have for the pharmacist. If you travel frequently, try a corporate pharmacy with stores throughout the country. Any branch you visit will have your medical information stored in their database. Also, if you become ill while away from home, your doctor will be able to send a pre-

pharmacist
scription to any branch pharmacy. If you have still have several pharmacies in mind, your family, friends and co-workers may have helpful suggestions. Ask for their advice. You could also check with your doctor for recommendations. Medications and Consultations In order to minimize confusion, its best to keep all of your prescriptions with one trusted pharmacy. Using different pharmacies means no one knows exactly what drugs youre taking; this situation is ripe for creating inadvertent drug interactions or overdoses. Keeping your information with one pharmacy means the pharmacist can monitor your drug regimen to avoid any adverse effects. Of course, trusting your pharmacist means you feel comfortable asking him/her questions about your medications and prescriptions. Look for someone who welcomes questions and answers you completely and patiently. Be aware that some pharmacies allow private, one-on-one consultations with the pharmacist while others do not. Decide whether privacy is a concern for you and choose accordingly. Training All pharmacists must keep their licenses and knowledge up to date. However, they have different levels of education. Pharmacists who trained prior to the 1990s may have a bachelors degree, while many recent graduates may have obtained a doctoral degree. If education is important to you, ask for the pharmacists background and training. Vaccinations Do you plan to get a seasonal flu shot at your pharmacy? Not all pharmacies offer such vaccinations. Of the ones that do, some pharmacies have the pharmacist give shots; others contain small medical clinics with physicians on staff to address basic medical needs. Some pharmacies charge for a flu shot. Others may give free flu shots. Inquire with the pharmacy staff to find out if they have a vaccination program. Selecting the right pharmacist is essential. After all, you are trusting this person for your prescription and medication needs. Given how much youll rely on and interact with the pharmacist, its at least as important as finding a good doctor.

harmacies have changed a lot over the years. In the past, they were usually small neighborhood stores where everyone knew your name. The selection might not have been the best, but the customer service they provided was always excellent. These days, many neighborhood pharmacies are large, corporate stores. The expansion in size has given them room to carry more products. No longer confined to selling only medicine or medical-related supplies, these pharmacies have turned into small retailers. Along with pharmaceutical goods, many stores also carry a variety of groceries and cosmetics. Unfortunately, not every pharmacy has kept its focus on its customers. As these stores have changed, it has become more important than ever to sift out the good from the bad. When deciding on which pharmacy you want servicing your prescription needs, there are several important factors to consider. Availability One factor to consider is the pharmacys hours of operation. Stores with limited business hours will not be very helpful if you or your loved ones get sick. Try finding a pharmacy with convenient business hours. You may even find a pharmacy in your city open 24 hours.

pharmacy
Usually, it is the large corporate chain stores that will be open late. Smaller, locally owned pharmacies may have be open for a shorter duration, but tend to provide more personalized service than the larger stores. Regardless of the pharmacy you choose, it is always a good idea to know where a 24-hour pharmacy is located in case of a late-night emergency. Location A pharmacys location is just as important as its hours of operation. Using a pharmacy close to your house is not only convenient, but it also makes purchasing medical products much easier. You may even find a store that is on your way home from work or school, allowing you to quickly and easily stop and pick up your medication. It is also useful to have a pharmacy that is minutes away, in case someone in your family becomes sick in the middle of the night. Drug Coverage Another factor to consider is whether the pharmacy accepts your prescription drug plan. Not every pharmacy accepts every kind of insurance. Call pharmacies to make sure they take your type of insurance. Convenient hours and location mean nothing if you are going to have to pay out of pocket. Anyone who has little to no prescription coverage should contact pharmacies and ask about prescription discounts. Many pharmacies are now offering lower prices on generic versions of medications, some of which may be medications that you take. By using a pharmacy that offers prescription drug discounts, you can save a good deal of money. Older patients who are on Medicare should be also take care when deciding on a pharmacy. Ask pharmacies in your area if they accept your Medicare Part D plan. As there are many options available on Medicare Part D plans, it is vital to make sure the pharmacy you select is willing to work with your plan in order to cover the medications you need. Service One last thing to consider is customer service. It is important to find a store where you feel at home. Do the pharmacists and staff remember your name? Does the pharmacist take time to answer questions about your medication? Finding a pharmacy staff that is knowledgeable, helpful and friendly can go a long way. While it may not be easy to find a pharmacy that meets each of these criteria, with a little research you should be able to find one that fits your needs.

private school
e all instinctively want what is best for our children. For this reason, many people choose to send their children to private schools. With the outcome so important, making just the right choice seems like a daunting task. It becomes less daunting if you give it some thought, do some research and break the process down into steps. The following tips may help you choose just the right school. Take some time to objectively evaluate your ultimate educational goals and the needs of your child. Does your child have any natural gifts that you are seeking to nurture? Does your child have any physical or learning disabilities or behavioral issues you want addressed? Are there any particular needs or requests your child has voiced a desire to address such as sports or music? With this in mind, ask for referrals from your childs current school, teachers, guidance counselors, family and friends. This should give you a good starting point. Next, make a general list of the things your ideal school would offer. Will your child attend a local day school or a boarding school? Do you have travel or budgetary restrictions? Do you want your child to have access to extracurricular activities such as sports, band, art or debate? You can do an Internet search for schools that meet your criteria. Most school sites have all the information you need as well as policy summaries. You can view photo galleries and even take video/virtual tours. This is a good start, but nothing replaces the experience of a real-life tour. Depending on how far away the school is, you will need to determine whether there are suitable transportation options available to and from the school. Once you have done the preliminary research, you are ready to make your short list of schools. These are the schools that fit

your initial criteria and you and your child think should be in the running. Once you have your list in hand, start filling in the details. This will help you further narrow the field. Dont forget to determine entrance requirements and ensure that your child meets them before moving forward with a particular school. Create a list of general questions along with a set of specific questions for each of the schools on your list. Start with a phone call to the schools. If you are still interested, make an appointment to go see the schools. While there, ask questions about the enrollment paperwork and any testing your child will have to complete. Use your time at the school to get a feel for the atmosphere. Is it relaxed and friendly or more structured and disciplined? Most importantly, is it what you expected and will your child feel comfortable there? Pay attention to how you are treated by the staff members. Are they friendly, helpful and respectful of your questions and concerns about your childs education? Remember, these will be the people you will be dealing with throughout your childs school career. Picture your family engaging in school activities, and particularly picture your child spending time there. Try to meet as many of the staff and teachers as are available. If your child attends the tours, make sure to ask her what she thinks about the schools. After your tours have been completed, start reviewing your notes. At this point you will have already begun to eliminate schools. Now you also have a better understanding of the total financial cost of each school. If you will need it, you should already have asked each school if they have any financial aid. If all has gone well, youll be able to apply to the school of your choice and have your child happily accepted.

RV dealer
or someone who has never owned a recreational vehicle, or an RV, shopping for one can be an overwhelming experience. Purchasing an RV is a more complicated than purchasing a car, leaving first time buyers with many questions. However, with some research and help from fellow RV owners, you can find an RV that is right for you. The first step in purchasing an RV is to ask yourself what you want out of a recreational vehicle. Do you plan to use it for travel? What styles and sizes appeal to you? Would you rather purchase a new RV as opposed to one that is used? There are resources available to help you answer these questions. The Internet is a good place to start, as you are sure to find examples of every brand and style available, along with their prices. As traversing the country in an RV is becoming increasingly popular, there are numerous message boards for RV owners that are sure to contain useful information. While the Internet is an excellent resource, the best way to learn about purchasing an RV is by asking RV owners themselves. If you have any friends or family who own an RV, ask if you can see their vehicle. Take your time inside the RV, examining the various options while getting a feel for what your money will buy you. Size is an important factor when it comes to choosing an RV. If you are only going to be using it for a few short vacations a year, then size may not be an issue. If you plan on living out of your vehicle for extended periods while traveling, or if you will have others traveling with you, then a larger RV will

prove to be more comfortable. It is important to note that some RV parks have restrictions on size, so find out what RV sizes are acceptable. Another thing to consider are the options you would like on your RV, such as a full-service kitchen or a plasma TV. Pick the options that will make traveling in your RV the comfortable experience

possible. Once you have become well-informed concerning RVs, the next step is to start visiting RV dealers. After thoroughly researching RVs, you and the salesperson will be on the same level; therefore, you will be able to converse confidently with the salesperson without any worries. While some dealers only sell new RVs, you can

also find them preowned from both dealers and private parties. If you plan to purchase a new RV, make sure your dealer offers a factory warranty. If you choose to buy a used RV from a dealer, make sure they provide you with both a factory warranty and a used vehicle report. Although used vehicle reports are common in the car industry, potential RV buyers usually dont think to ask for one. However, it is important to find out the history of a used RV before purchasing it, as it could have undergone extensive damage. Some dealers may offer you incentives in order to get your business, such as free upgrades or a good financing rate. While these bonuses seem appealing, you should always be skeptical about the deal that comes with them. If you can, bring an RV owner with you to the dealership. Most RV owners will be happy to share their opinions with you, while ensuring that you are getting a fair deal. Make sure that the dealer you choose has an on-site service department or a contract with a reputable RV repair shop. Since RV repairs are specialized and different from regular vehicles, you need a good service shop that will accept your warranty in case your RV is ever damaged. With a little bit of research, you can find a great deal on the RV best suited for your needs, while ensuring that your recreational vehicle will last for years to come.

ax codes are becoming more complex every year. As a result, more people are turning to professional tax preparation services when filing quarterly or yearly returns. Choose your tax preparer wisely. Employing one can save you a lot of time, but selecting a good one requires some detective work. The IRS is the first to urge caution when choosing a tax professional. Using a tax preparation service does not absolve you of responsibility for your tax return. Most professional tax preparers are honest and reliable, providing excellent services to their clients. Unfortunately, there are those who are less than

tax professional
scrupulous, causing their clients legal and financial difficulties. As of 2011, the IRS requires anyone who is paid to prepare taxes for others to register, pass a competency test and meet continuing education requirements. When conducting your search for a tax preparer, find out if they are able to represent you if you are audited by the IRS. This is also a good time to inquire about his or her preparers audit rate. Make certain the person youre hiring specializes in tax preparation. Even a certified public accountant might not be a tax specialist. Hiring a CPA is no guarantee against you getting an IRS audit notification. The federal tax code grows in complexity every year, making it hard for even tax professionals to stay current with the most recent changes. A CPA specializing in taxation should have documentation of any continuing education classes completed in the past year. Verify your preparers credentials or those of the firm he or she works for. The Better Business Bureau can tell you if the tax preparation service has a questionable reputation. If you are still in doubt, contact your states board of accountancy or your state bar associations tax lawyers to inquire into the preparers professional record.

A LEGITIMATE AND REPUTABLE PROFESSIONAL TAX PREPARER SHOULD HAVE:

An affiliation with an organization requiring continuing education A fee schedule based on the complexity of your return A willingness to answer all of your questions Availability extending beyond the preparation and filing of your tax return Familiarity with the tax laws of each state in which you file a return Familiarity with any special circumstances that may apply to you A willingness to include an itemized list of any judgment calls it has made and attach it to your copy of the return A willingness to provide an in-person review of any expected refunds with the preparer.

WARNING SIGNS OF A DISREPUTABLE TAX PREPARER MAY INCLUDE:

Claims that they can obtain larger refunds than their competitors Guarantees of a refund up front A request for your signature on a blank tax form An unwillingness to sign a return, known as ghost preparation. You need to discuss your financial situation thoroughly with your tax preparation professional because your financial and legal status is at stake. Hire only the one who best meets your needs and who has a proven track record of competence, a sterling reputation, and an attitude of respect toward his clients. The preparer should be ready to stand behind his work and beside you if you ever need to appear for an audit.

HOW MANY TIRES DO I NEED? All four tires should be identical. If your tires dont match, you could have handling problems. For instance, one end of your vehicle may not respond as quickly or completely as the other end, making the vehicle more difficult to control. If you just need to replace one tire that has been damaged, replace it with a tire of the same brand type, size and speed rating. A tire that doesnt match the other three tires on your vehicle could affect your driving safety. If you need to replace two tires and the remaining two have a lot of tread depth left, replace them with tires that match your existing set as closely as possible. Identical new tires are best but others of the same size and type can also provide good results. SHOULD I BUY A DIFFERENT TYPE OF TIRE? If you are replacing all four tires, you can explore another category of tires. If you want longer lasting tires, better traction or a smoother ride, there are tires that will help you accomplish this. WHAT SIZE TIRE DO I NEED? Tires must be able to carry the weight of your vehicle. If a tire is overworked just carrying the load, it will have little reserve capacity to help your vehicle respond quickly and safely. Do not buy undersized tires. Check your owners manual, vehicle door jam or glovebox, to find the size of tire recommended for your vehicle. The other size consideration is overall tire diameter. For cars and vans, stay within a +/-3 percent diameter change. Pick-ups and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) are usually engineered to handle up to a 15 percent oversize tire. WHAT WEATHER AND DRIVING CONDITIONS WILL THE TIRES FACE? Select a tire that suits the driving conditions you face most often: Snow or ice: snow tires. Heavy traffic: more responsive tires. Winding roads or in the mountains: a tire that handles well. Extensive highway driving: tires with a smooth, quiet ride.

he tires on your vehicle can affect your safety and driving enjoyment. Choose tires that match both your vehicle and the way you drive.

If you face very different driving conditions (heavy snow in the winter and lots of highway driving in the summer), consider selecting two sets of tires. Youll get better driving performance and longer total wear from your tires. WHAT KIND OF LOOK DO I WANT? Think about whether youre happy with standard tires or you want the added flair of custom wheels or plus sizing. HOW CAN I FIND THE BEST VALUE? Simple fact: In the long run, cheap tires wont save you money. They dont last as long as higher quality tires and may result in a rougher ride and inferior handling. Your goal in tire shopping should be to find the highest quality tire that meets your specific needs and your budget. A tire has several important functions: STEERS THE VEHICLE A tires ability to maintain its course affects the vehicles ability to drive in a straight path. The tire has to help the vehicle steer regardless of road and weather conditions. SUPPORT THE VEHICLE A car tire has to carry more than 50 times its own weight. ABSORBS BUMPS The flexibility of a tire helps it absorb bumps on uneven road surfaces and provides a stable ride for the driver and passengers while protecting the vehicle.

TRANSMITS FORCES Tires transmit the engines power to accelerate and the braking force to stop. How well the tire performs these functions depends in part on how well the tire is maintained. IMPORTANT POINTS P195/75R14 92H The P stands for passenger tire. Tires for light trucks may be marked with LT. P195/75R14 92H This is the width of an inflated tire (mm) at its widest point. P195/75R14 92H The aspect ratio is the relationship of the height to the width. P195/75R14 92H R stands for radial indicating the tire has radial construction. P195/75R14 92H The diameter of the wheel in inches. P195/75R14 92H The load index corresponds with the load-carrying capacity of the tire. Most passenger car tires range from 75-105. P195/75R14 92H H is the performance rating. A is the lowest and Z the highest.

urologist
rologists play a vital role in medical care. These specialists deal with the urinary tract and are experts in a wide range of issues, from kidney stones to urinary tract infections. If you need a urologist, here are some things to consider: ASK AROUND First, ask other physicians whom they recommend. Ask your primary care doctor whom he or she would see. Ask close friends or family members whom they have used. Often, people dont like to talk about medical problems involving the urinary tract, but such issues are actually quite common, so its likely someone you know has had issues similar to yours and will be glad to tell you whom they recommend. You can also search online reviews to see what other patients say. While this can give you good advice, be aware that anonymous reviews can be easily faked and rarely tell the whole story. CHECK CREDENTIALS You can also check with your states medical board to see what records they

have on urologists in your area. They should be able to tell you if a urologist has credentials and whether he or she has faced any past sanctions. You can also check with the American Board of Medical Specialities (ABMS) to see if the urologist is board certified. The ABMS has a website for patients who want to look up local specialists at http:// CertificationMatters.org. OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER Visit the office in person and take note of how the office staff treats you. Are they polite? Do they return calls promptly and make you feel comfortable as a potential patient? Convenience is another consideration. Will you be going back for follow-up visits? If so, youll likely want an office that is nearby. You should also be aware of the office hours to make sure they are convenient for your needs. Be sure your potential urologist can answer all your questions. Does he or she have a good bedside manner? A little research can give you peace of mind.

ou work hard for your money, so you dont want to pay more for a used car than necessary. And you dont want to be stuck with a clunker you cant return. The dealer is entitled to make a decent profit, but you dont want to overpay. Make sure you have a good idea of what the vehicle you want to buy should cost before you even set foot on the dealership. Follow these tips to choose a good used car dealer: CHOOSE YOUR VEHICLE Dont shop for a used vehicle without first knowing what you want. If you dont know the exact make and model, at least narrow it down to automobile type. Do you want a sports car, an SUV, a pickup truck or a van? Make up your mind early in the process so you dont waste time visiting dealerships that dont sell the type of used car you want. SEARCH THE BLUE BOOK Next, decide how much you want to spend. Search the Kelly Blue Book (http://kbb.com) or the NADA Guides (http://nada.com/) for a general idea of price range you are shooting for. Also search newspapers and the Internet to see the asking prices for cars that youre interested in. TALK TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY Your friends and family members who purchase used cars are a great source of information on reliable dealers. They have experience with who treated them right and who didnt

and are the best people to trust. If you get more than one positive review of a dealer during your research, make sure to check the dealer out. MAKE APPOINTMENTS Make a list of dealerships you want to visit. In addition to the ones youve gathered from family and friends, check out the phone book and online Iistings. Call and make appointments to visit and talk to a salesperson. Also ask about financing and any extended warranties they might offer. Try to make appointments with all the dealerships on your list. You should compare as many as possible so you can avoid making a hasty, uninformed decision. VISIT THE DEALERSHIPS Stop by each dealership. Look for cars that match the type you are looking for. Talk to the salesperson to ensure he or she is someone you are comfortable dealing with. Ask about financing, warranties, maintenance and past owner reports. Dont buy on the first visit. Take a business card and move on to the next dealership. After you have visited all the dealerships, research customer reviews of the ones you were most impressed with. Youll find the best dealership by narrowing it down to the one who will offer you the best deal and who has gotten the best customer reviews.
